How do I silence an already playing notification on the iPhone 6 plus

I have the iPhone 6 plus. When my phone is on ring and I get a call or text and the ringtone starts playing, sometimes I want to silence the notification rather then listen to the whole song play. How do I silence it? If I happen to be somewhere such is in a public place like a library and forgot to put my phone on ring there is no way or button that I know of to interrupt the already playing notification song. can anyone help me or is anyone else having this issue? I have tried the power button and the home button, both volume buttons I've even tried pressing and holding the power button as well as the volume buttons and home button. for instance my grandmother was forced to listen to one of my ring tones titled Yayo... Awkward.....

Simply pressing the lock (power) button once should silence the ringtone instantly.  At least it has in all prior iOS versions.
If your phone is in a case, make sure that you are pressing the lock button sufficiently hard.  Sometimes certain cases don't fit as well as they should and don't make good contact with the physical controls.
