How do I stop a new tab from opening when I click a link?

Whenever I click a link, it opens in a new tab. This just started almost a week ago, but I didn't change any settings or click anything--it just started doing it by itself. It is extremely irritating, because it just increases the number of tabs I have.

Okay, so I tried that, but it didn't work. Any other suggestions?

Check the links below for options to remove the Adware.

If you are comfortable doing manual file removals use the somewhat more difficult method:

  • A new tab is opening when I click anything on a page. Options that should open within the same window are opening in a new tab. How do I fix this?

I am currently using 16.0.2. I just did the update a day or two ago. Suddenly today, when I click anything on the page, it opens in a new tab. Just moving through the wizard options to get to this point in submitting this issue opened 7 tabs. How do I fix this? I only want new pages to open in new tabs. If I select 'Next Page' or perform a google search, I don't want a new tab to open. This is getting ridiculous. It's the third time this has happened.....always happens after an update from you guys.....and I can never find the fix in your support pages, and have to submit a question.

This issue can be caused by an extension that isn't working properly.
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.

  • Why can't I get a new tab to open when I click on new tab?

I have tried to click on a new tab and it won't open.
I have tried to press ctrl-T and a new tab won't open.
I have gone to File New Tab and it still will not open.
And nothing seems to be turned off anywhere that I can see on the surface.
A new tab will only come up if a link clicks to another site or if I move a new window into firefox.

Usually when I click the + button, a new tab would open up. But during the last couple of days it has not worked. I click it and nothing happens. I've searched for a solution, but I can not find one. What do I need to do to correct this problem?

  • How do i stop the new tabs from automatically redirecting any address i type in to ask seach?

After the latest patch, any address i put in just redirects me to ask search. How can i stop it?

hello WNxBrontus, this sounds like a problem possibly caused by adware on your pc. please go to firefox > addons > extensions & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc). also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all potentially unwanted software.
[[Remove a toolbar that has taken over your Firefox search or home page]]
afterwards you can either install the [https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/searchreset/ searchreset addon] to get rid of the problem or manually reset the page that opens on each new tab - enter '''about:config''' into the firefox location bar (confirm the info message in case it shows up), search for the preference named '''browser.newtab.url''' and right-click & reset it to its default value (about:newtab).

  • When I hit my home button, firefox opens a new tab window each time along with the homw page that it takes me to. How do I stop this extra tab from opening?

The above question says it all. I get an extra blank window opened every time I go to my home page using the Home button.

Do you have a '''|''' following the web address that you set for your Home Page in Options > General?
That vertical bar symbol is used to separate tabs URL's when multiple homepages are set as the "Home Page", and if only that vertical bar symbol is there, a blank tab will be opened.

  • How do I stop extra instances of my Firefox home page from opening when I click on links?

Frequently, when I click on a link in an email or on a web page, and Firefox is not yet running, not only does that linked web page open, but also an extra instance of my home page opens. I would like to prevent this from happening.

I asked the same question on Yahoo! Answers, and I was advised to reinstall Firefox, which I have just done (with version 3.6.8). The problem seems to be solved. Prior to doing this, I attempted to uninstall my previous version, but Control Panel wouldn't let me do this, nor would Windows Explorer allow me to send the whole Mozilla Firefox folder to the Recycle Bin. I went to Plan C, which was to delete all the subfolders in the main folder, followed by the leftover files, and finally empty the Recycle bin. Then I used Internet Explorer to download the newer version of Firefox, and installed it. No more extra home pages, so far.

  • Why does a new tab not open when I click on it? I have just suffered from searchqu and successfully removed it (fingers crossed) but now I have this issue. Please help?

Since I got infected with searchqu and (hopefully) removed this, when I try and click on the + to open a new tab, nothing happens. I have also tried clicking on file, scrolling to "New Tab" but again nothing happens. However, if I go to file then "New Window" then it will open a new window - but what a nightmare!!! Please can someone help?

  • Want to stop multiple spam windows from opening when I click on a link

All of a sudden when I click on a link all sorts of spam windows open up. I have "Pop-Up" windows set to off....but they still open...also all of a sudden pages on line will have tons of words highlighted as hough they are links.... and when I click on them thinking it is a link it is another annoying pop up window. I have checked my "plug ins" and "add ons" and there is nothing there that I can find. I am using Windows 7 and this problem just began this week. I ran a McAfee scan and found no virus......can you help???

Really? It's not there? Huh, that's odd...
Your System Details show that there is one. Is this the same Firefox installation that's having problems or did you post it from another computer with Firefox installed?

You should always pay attention when installing software because often, a software installer includes optional installs, such as this adware. Be very careful what you agree to install.<br>
Adware gets on your computer after you have installed a freeware software (video recording/streaming, download-managers or PDF creators) that had bundled into their installation this browser hijacker.
You can use the below steps to revert back to adware-less Firefox.
    1) <u>Reset Prefs</u>
*Navigate to '''about:config''' in your Address Bar
*Press the "I'll be careful, I promise!" button to proceed
*Search for <b>trovi</b> and reset all prefs that pull up by right clicking > Reset
*Also search for <b>conduit</b> and reset all prefs to be sure it's gone.
    2) Remove any programs that you don't recognize or remember installing from your Control Panel (Start > Control Panel > Uninstall a Program)
    3) Remove any extensions that you don't recognize or remember installing from Firefox.
    *<b>Firefox 29 and above:</b>(Press the menu button ([[Image:new fx menu]] > Add-ons > Extensions)
    *<b>Firefox 28 and below:</b>(Go to the orange Firefox button > Add-ons > Extensions)
    4) Download ADW Cleaner to wipe out any remnants of the adware.

  • How do I stop a new tab from appearing that tells me to update to the latest verson of a video player.

This tab comes up every time I start Firefox, and often several times in a row.

This can be caused by a bad add-on or other malware. Here's my suggested procedure for tracking down and cleaning out bad add-ons. Sorry for the length -- it's not as bad as it looks:
    (1) Open the Windows '''Control Panel''', Uninstall a Program. After the list loads, click the "Installed on" column heading to group the infections, I mean, additions, by date. This can help in smoking out undisclosed bundle items that snuck in with some software you agreed to install. Take out as much trash as possible here.
    (2) Open Firefox's '''Add-ons page''' using either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
In the left column, click '''Plugins'''. Set nonessential and unrecognized plugins to "Never Activate".
In the left column, click '''Extensions'''. Then, if in doubt, disable (or Remove, if possible) unrecognized and unwanted extensions.
Often a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
    Any improvement?
    (3) You can search for remaining issues with the '''scanning/cleaning tools''' listed in our support article: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]]. These on-demand scanners are free and take considerable time to run. If they finish quickly and especially if they require payment, you may have a serious infection. I suggest the specialized forums listed in the article in that case.
    Success?

  • How do I stop one extra tab from opening every time I start Firefox?

Every time I open Firefox, my Yahoo homepage opens, but an additional page also opens which has a variety of website thumbnails and nothing else on that page.
In my Options, I have ONLY www.yahoo.com selected as my homepage, so only ONE page should be opening every time I start Firefox.
However, no matter what I do, this second page continues to open every time. It's very irritating, as half the time I've already begun to enter data into my homepage, then the second page pops up and switches to that and I'm typing on that page.
    Please advise.

    @jscher2000
Thank you!! That fixed the problem. The only add-ons I have are for my anti-virus software WebRoot, but somehow I must have installed Speed Dial without realizing it.
That fixed the problem. Greatly appreciated!!

  • How do we stop an extra window from opening when we use openDoc in 3.1?

We have migrated content from XI r2 to 3.1 and when we use the opendoc/openDocument.jsp, it works but is also opening a blank browser window.  Any idea how to prevent this?  We've tested on 3 different versions of IE (6, 7 and 8).  It doesn't appear to be affected by user preference settings in InfoView and doesn't seem to matter if the new parameter is part of the URL.  Here's a sample URL:
    http://[server name]:[port]/OpenDocument/opendoc/openDocument.jsp?sPath=[ReportsByRole],[Shared]&sDocName=TrendedSupplyIndex+Report
We get the same result if we're using Crystal, Webi or Xcelsius and we get the same result if we use the wizard and build the connection on a Webi report so it's using the opendocument.jsp file that's in AnalyticalReporting\opendoc

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply.  We did try adding the window.close to the Tomcat55\webapps\OpenDocument\opendoc\isApplication.jsp file and that resolved the issue.  However, we eventually figured out that we could get by without the customization by using different parameters in the report links.
This example works for Xcelsius (to Xcelsius, Webi)- it has to have the appKind and isApplication parameter:
    /AnalyticalReporting/opendoc/openDocument.jsp?appKind=InfoView&isApplication=true&sPath=[ReportsByRole],[SHARED]&sDocName=DailyProductivityTool&lsSAU=406000&lsSFacility=Fa&lsSCompany=No
This example works for Crystal (to Crystal):
    "../OpenDocument/opendoc/openDocument.jsp?sType=rpt&sPath=[Communications],[ReportLibrary]&sDocName=ReportProfile&sWindow=New&lsSReportID=" & {@ReportID}
This example works for Webi (to Webi):
    ="<a href=../../opendoc/openDocument.jsp?iDocID=Ac20j.bpit1IrTJ5MYi6dvw&sIDType=CUID&sType=wid&sRefresh=Y&sWindow=New&NAII=Y&lsSPleaseentervalueforFiscalYear(YYYY)="[var_Year]"&lsSPleaseentervalueforStartFiscalMonth(MM)="[var_Start Month]"&lsSPleaseentervalueforStopFiscalMonth(MM)="[var_Stop Month]"&lsMSelectoneormoreAccountingUnit(s)="[var_CoEntAcctUnit]" title=\"Departmental Responsibility Summary\" href=\"#\" style=\"text-decoration:none; color:blue;\">"[var_Co]"-"[Account Unit]+"</a>"
