How do you connect an iPad to a USB stick?

Hi. I know an Ipad can read and display pdf files. If I have these files on a memory stick, how would I connect and downlaod the pdf files from the memory stck to the Ipad? I have been looking and cannot find a cable that would enable me to do this.
The files are too big to e mail.
It has bben suggested that the only way to do this is to download the files to a Mac first. Then place them onto the Ibooks app. Then from there to itunes. Then to sync the ipad with itunes.
There has to be a better way.
Any help would be appreciated.

The only other option beyond online tranfer is to look into Documents to Go or ReaddleDocs. Both are paid apps. Docs to Go is a word processing app that also has a desktop program that you can use to wirelessly transfer and sync documents between computers and devices. ReaddleDocs has a browser and can do online transfers although I've never used that part of it.
Your cheapest and fastest way would be something like Dropbox and then if you have to do this regularly you can look into something else.
