how does another computer show up as "shared" in my file sidebar?

If you are seeing someone else's computer in your sidebar it is because they have 'shared' something on their computer and hence made it available to you. If you share something on your computer then your computer would become visible in their sidebar.
You can access their shared computer without them being able to access yours. They do not have to do anything on your computer to make theirs available to you. All they have to do is tell you what username and password to use to access their computer.

I take a .NEF file and a .JPG file with every click. When I transfer the files using a flash drive to another computer I never get all of the files to transfer. I get some of the .NEF and some of the .JPGs but not all. How come?

If you're exporting a project then you'll only get the images in that project. Also if any of the masters are referenced then you won't get those masters unless you check Consolidate masters into exported library
It might be best if you started from the beginning and explained what it is your are trying to do and how you're going about doing it. Also a description of you're hardware/software setup would be helpful.

  • Applications: How does OS X Know Which App to Reference a File to?

I just got my new Macbook and while installing applications, a question I've had for a while came up again.
How does OS X know to reference applications to certain file types?
For example. I have a .avi I downloaded to watch, and downloaded VLC to watch it. I open the .dmg and drag/drop VLC to my Applications folder. Instantly, VLC appears in the "Open With" list for my .avi. How does it know to list it?
    My theories are:
    1. When dragging/dropping VLC, it's not just copying files, it's also doing some background stuff, including VLC telling OS X that it should be referenced for .avi files
    2. When I "Open With" a file, OS X looks at apps in my Applications folder and detects applicable ones in some manner.
    3. It's Voodoo magic.
How does it work? I hope my question makes sense.
    Thanks!

From what I understand, the second the .dmg is opened and VLC is seen by OS X as an application, Launch Services asks VLC what filetypes to associate it with, and adds that to the database? Then when I try to "open with" a .avi, it sees that .avi is associated with QuickTime, and now VLC too.
that's right. inside the VLC application bundle there is a file called info.plist which contains among other things the info about which files VLC can handle. that file is consulted by the Launch services once it becomes aware of VLC being present in the system and that info is recorded in the launch services database. That's how it works with all applications. you can view this file if you want. control-click on VLC in finder and select "show package contents". in the new finder window that opens up go to Contens folder and quicklook the file info.plist.
    Is this correct?
    Thanks.

  • Mystery computer shows up under Shared list in Finder

I’m hoping someone can help me solve a mystery…I have 2 macs (a late 2008 MBP and the most recent white MB), both connected wirelessly to a Time Capsule. From time to time, I see a computer show up under the list of Shared devices that I cannot identify. It is listed just as a MAC address and looking at Get Info tells me it’s a PC server. I have no other computers or devices connected to my network. and I also have the network protected with a password. I even changed the network password this morning, and the mystery computer still appears and disappears at random. When it does appear, I can connect to it as a Guest, but there are no folders or other content available.
Can anyone suggest what might be going on? I’m concerned that my network is compromised and that someone else has access to my files. Should I be worried and how can I fix this?
    Thank you!

It's more likely that you are seeing someone elses computer that may have sharing enabled. If you are in an apartment building or have neighbors otherwise close-by, you may just be picking up their machine. Because you see theirs does not mean that they can access yours in anyway. HOWEVER... if you see a machine appear under your shares (or otherwise) that you are not familiar with, you should NOT attempt to connect to it. Doing so could potentially compromise your system. It's not very likely... even less likely on a Mac... but it is something to avoid.

  • How does an app show up without typing in a password for iTunes?

Is there a way that an an app can install or be downloaded without knowledge or approval?  Wifi? Bump? Accidental from Facebook?
The particular app in question provides quotes, photos, and cartoons that can be used on Facebook, backgrounds, etc. It also has a statement that the user must be 17 or older  to download, due to content.
App does not show up in purchase history. Why not? How can this be?
How does an app install without signing in with a password or tapping the install button?  Possible or not? Need legitimate and plausible response please.

Found a photo offered by the same app on a "friends"  Facebook site. By clicking that photo that had been uploaded by way of their mobile app to their facebook you are sent to a Facebook style slide show  that you scroll through additional photos/quotes from the site.  Is this considered a web app?  It views like any photo slide show on Facebook.
However it seems that at some point this app actually installed itself on the iPad.  How to prevent in future???

  • How does the Computer ID Change?

Yesterday I was using an activated copy of NI Vision AI 2010.  Today when I went to open vision builder on that same machine computer, it stated I did not have a full licsense.  When I was in the license manager, it said that this product was already licensed on another computer.  When I pulled up the computer description, it gave me a different computer ID then what was on my activation email.  What can change the Computer ID and how do I get it back to the other computer ID that it is supposed to be?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi innoshane,
It depends on the specific computer for how it determines its ID. It could either be based off of you MAC address or your Hard Drive's serial number. Is this computer a desktop or laptop computer? Have you made any hardware changes to the computer since it has worked correctly?
Let me know about those questions and we can see if it is possible to force the computer to reference one of these options to get it back to the working ID.

  • An unknown computer shows up under SHARED in Finder

An unknown computer (named "mac001b63aca152) that its info shows that it is PC Server shows up under SHARED in Finder. Is there a way I can be sure it doesn't have access to my files and also is it possible to remove it from the SHARED list?
    Thanks in advance,
    Behrang

I have seen a number like that "mac" followed by what looks like MAC address on my MacBook Pro in System Preferences > Network > Airport > Advanced Button > WINS tab at the Computer name.
It seemed to happen following an update where it seemed to have forgotten what I had named it and used the Airport Media Access Card (MAC) address instead.

  • The firefox icon shows on my desk top and in my task bar, but why does it NOT show in my list of Program files?

My Firefox icons are showing and usable from the desktop and from the task bar; however, the Mozilla Firefox does not show in my list of program files. Why doesn't it show?

    Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems?esab=a&s=troubleshooting&r=3&as=s#w_5-reinstall-firefox here].
<b>WARNING:</b> Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u>
Please report back to see if this helped you!
    Thank you.

  • Do image files adjusted in Lightroom transfer to another computer if you need to reload the files?

I'm used to making adjustments in Camera RAW and copying the image files for use on multiple workstations.  In this case, my adjustments go with the image file.  If I make my adjustments using Lightroom and move the image files to another computer will I lose those adjustments?  I wonder if I invest all my adjustment time using Lightroom and my computer crashes will I lose those adjustments even though I am backing up my files to an external drive.

You wrote: " If I make my adjustments using Lightroom and move the image files to another computer will I lose those adjustments?"
Yes, you will loose them unless you save to xmp. You save to xmp by either pressing Ctrl / Cmd + letter "S"  or
    a) in the Library Module you go >Metadata >Save Metadata to File, or
    b) in the Develop Module you go >Photo >Save metadata to file.
Without <Saving metadata to file> Lr writes the edits into the catalog only. And, if you transfer images without the catalog to another computer your edits will be lost on the second computer.
By <Saving metadata to file> a xmp sidecar file will be created that stores the edits. In case of a DNG the edits are not written into Xmp but into the file header - same effect.
Note though that not everything can be stored in xmp-files. For instance collections, stacking are stored in the catalog only.
This is presumably so because the save to xmp was created in order that Lr adjustment can be viewed in other Adobe products (for instance in Bridge). Naturally, only those "features" need to be written into xmp that the other program can display.

  • How does my application save the raw data to binary file?

    Hi all,
At first, please look at my attachment. There is the part of my code (it is inside of a while loop) which saves a raw data from my firewire camera. I am thinking how does this saving process work? How does it save the data in each while loop's iteration time (pixels, rows and columns)? For example if I use 100x1000 8-bit image. There is also Set File Position.vi which makes next line after iteration (at least I think so?). It is important to know when I'm processing the data later with Matlab.
    My second question:
If I set height = 100 and width = 1000 as parameters, image indicator from IMAQdx Grab's image out says that the image is "only" 1000x96 8-bit image. Where are "missing" 4 bits?

    Hi again,
Here is my whole CameraSoftware. It is a part of the bigger measurement program.
I hope you can find the solution of "lost 4 bits"

  • There is another computer listed in my "Shared" who or what is it?

It looks like there is a third system that is shared on my sidebar. I have an airport extreme and an express for wireless music.
In my finder sidebar it lists my Airpot extreme, which gets me to the external hardrive that I have connected. Then it lists the other Mac book we have in the house.
Then there is another, it is listed as "mac002332be716e". It won't let me log in and when I click "get info" it says that it is a PC Server. What or who is this?
    Thanks for the help!

It may just be the Express showing up for some reason. The "MAC002332be716e" sounds like it is the MAC address for the device. I would check Airport Utility and if the Express shows up, click on it to see it's mac address and see if it matches. If it is the address, it should look like MAC 00:23:32:be:71:6e. If it does not match, try clicking on the Airport Extreme and goint to the Logs and summaries page to see the MAC addresses for any DHCP or wireless clients, it may give more information about what it is.

  • Drive Recovery Using DRA on another Computer Shows No Protectors

We are rolling out a new series of laptop using MBAM 2.5 next week. We are encrypting the OS drive with 256bit encryption using MBAM GPOs and use TPM+PIN. We have also setup DRAs via GPO, which was done on our previous generation of laptops, but
without MBAM. We are able to recover a drive using the recovery password. Manage-bde -protectors -get c: on the laptop shows all the correct protectors. When I remove the disk drive and put it in a USB carrier and plug it into a similarly configured laptop
to decrypt the drive via DRA, the drive shows as unformatted and a showing of protectors for the drive lists no protectors. I don't understand. We have done this same process for several years with our previous generation of laptops. I am stumped.

You may want to check the settings configured for the policy “Choose how BitLocker-protected operating system drives can be recovered”
From Planning for MBAM 2.5 Group Policy Requirements
    Suggested configuration: Not Configured
Configure this policy to enable the BitLocker data recovery agent or to save BitLocker recovery information to Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS).
When this policy is not configured, the data recovery agent is allowed, and recovery information is not backed up to AD DS.
MBAM operation does not require recovery information to be backed up to AD DS.

  • HT201516 can iphoto just disappear? Why does my computer show no photos?

I Was trying to look at photos and iPhoto had just disappeared from my computer and seemingly so had my 30,0000 photos stored on my external hardrive.  I am running MacKeeper and seem to have started to recover them.  I tried to download iPhoto again and it said It couldn't run on less than OSX 10.10 whereas I have 10.9.5.  When I have recovered my pictures I will update the OS.  Can I update it now while the recovery is happening? And can I download iPhoto while recovering the photos?  Has anyone experience of this?

The first thing to do is get rid of MacKeeper.

Is the iPhoto application in your Applications folder and does it open? If not, do you have a backup you can restore the application from? iLife disks?

Can you see the iPhoto Library on the external drive?  How are you recovering the photos?
Before upgrading, I suggest you try to get iPhoto straightened out.
