How I spent my Fall vacation getting ITUNES to run again

I have been having intermittent problems with ITUNES downloading to my client. Once every few weeks a download gets interrupted and fails to restart. Or more correctly it restarts on the client but never finishes. The counter just keeps incrementing more hours and the download does not respond to any command to pause or delete it on the client. In the past, I generated a problem report in my ITUNES account and eventually the guys behind the magic curtin get around to restarting the download on their end and it completes eventually.
Well, it did this again this weekend only this time, ITUNES became non-responsive. It would continue to do the non-download but it would no longer stream or sync with any of my ATVs. If I attempted to do anything with ITUNES it locked up and became non-responsive on the host box. And to make it even a more enjoyable experience, the client refused to react to any inputs. So I had to force a shut down and restart. Several times.
So now the wife is telling me she wants to watch her TV shows and ITUNES is dead.
So I generate a problem report in ITUNES Store which is the only way that Apple chooses to support its customer base . .. totally unacceptable to me. But clearly I dont matter.
I then went into my email and found the last set of emails from Apple support when I had this recurring problem before. I generated an email request for help and fired it off.
Feeling totally helpless due to the lack of even near time support from Apple for the Store, I started experimenting with different approaches and doing research.
I found a link about fixing a problem similar to mine by repurchasing the offending file. I attempted to get to the Istore but of course ITUNES and the client computer both locked up and forced multiple restarts to get back to the non-op condition.
Then, while I had the ITUNES and client running on the host XP box, I went to a second computer, opened up ITUNES, migrated to my account and bought the offending ITUNES file on the second instance of ITUNES. The download immediately initiated and was running normally. So I shut down Itunes on the second computer and restarted it on the host computer. When I opened ITUNES on the hose computer, it automatically went out to the Store and started the new download! Hazzahh! So I let that run to conclusion. Great, now I can make the wife happy after only 2 freaking days.
So I then went to my local ATV and fired it up to test watching a show. It gave me the standard error message that says it is not communicating with the host ITUNES instance. Since ITUNES and the host were now running more or less normally, I did a restart of ITUNES and it saw the ATVs as normal but it would not commuincate with them. It said that the ATV was busy and not communicating. Which I knew was not true.
So I restarted everything, reassociated the ATVs etc. Nothing worked.
So at the behest of Apple Support I deinstalled ITUNES and reinstalled it.
The good news is that when I reassociated the ATVs with the new ITUNES instance, I could again stream and sync.
But . . .
Now none of the ATVs would play any of the ITUNES content that has DRM on it. So the wife could STILL not watch her shows.
I generated more emails to Apple support and got no responses of course, so I did considerable research.
I stumbled across an article that said under my observed conditions, I should rebuild the ITUNES library. The issue was that the ATVs were not authrizing with the ITUNES client. I deauthorized and reauthorized several times first but no joy.
So finally I bit the bullet and initiated a rebuild of the ITUNES library . . .
This took from Sunday afternoon to Tuesday evening to complete!
But finally after all the above I managed to get ITUNES back to the same condition it was in when it failed 4 days earlier.
My wife gets to watch her shows, but both of us have to wonder if Apple is really serious about selling shows from ITUNES as long as they make every problem a computer science project. If grandma ran into any of these problems, ITUNES and ATV would be out the door in a heart beat.
Too bad, because when it runs its a great application and system

  • I got an iPad (3) and set it up on my laptop (Windows 7) with my iPhone (4). The iTunes upgrade (before 6) crashed iTunes. I couldn't get iTunes to run again until upgraded to 6. Now nothing will sync. I have a small fraction of my apps. Help, please.

    Just a bit more.
According to my laptop, when I hook up my iPhone, either I hit an error of "user defined breakpoint" or it's having issues recognizing the iPad (when the iPhone is hooked up).
I've also tried installing iTunes on my work computer, but it won't recognize the phone unless I update iTunes. When I try to update, I get errors and iTunes crashes.
I'm worried because I haven't backed up my phone or pad in over 2 months and nothing I'm trying works.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

In technical support, sometimes you have to make educated guesses. I'm sorry that you were offended.
iTunes does prompt when it is going to erase a device, and the message is clear.
She said in her message that she was able to successfully sync the old ipad. This indicated to me that itunes wiping the data was not an issue, because either it had been setup at the apple store (in which case it doesn't actually wipe the ipad despite saying it will*) (*based on a single case I saw), or because the itunes media folder was migrated.
Furthermore, my solution was to tell her how to backup her ipad (by either doing it manually, or as a last resort, by deleting the corrupt backup -- that she couldn't access anyway.)
I got that last part of the instructions from the "Taking Control of your iphone" book which I found samples of when I did a google search for "corrupted backup itunes".
She marked this as a solution, so it worked for her.

iPod Nano 2nd Generation is requesting 4 digit code. I have never set a lock code. What is this and how can I get my Nano running again?

There is no other way to bypass the combintation lock other than to connect the nano to iTunes and restore it to factory settings, erasing all content and settings from the iPod.

  • Is Adobe Photoshop cs3/10 still being supported?  Mac crashed and need to get up and running again.

Is Adobe Photoshop cs3/10 still being supported?  Mac crashed and need to get up and running again.  Thank you for any info on cs3. mayord

I believe if you were to ask Adobe Support they would tell you that CS3 is no longer supported by their services, if that is what you are refering to when you say "being supported".  That means they are not likely to offer assistance with you re-establishing it.
But you can probably re-establish it yourself.  If you need to download it there is a place for that available:
You can download the trial version of the software thru the page linked below and then use your current serial number to activate it.
Be sure to follow the steps outlined in the Note: Very Important Instructions section on the download pages at this site and have cookies enabled in your browser or else the download will not work properly.

  • I've changed my "My Music" folder and now I cant get iTunes to run!

Ok, Maybe some has a fix for this - I am running Vista and I have moved my "My Music" folder from its original location to its own dedicated hard drive (F:). Now when I install and try to run any iTunes version I get the error "The folder iTunes cannot be found or created and is required. The Default location for this folder is inside the "Music" Folder." I have even gone so far as to create a Music folder under Users\"current user"\ . Does anyone have a workaround or fix to this - I will have to take this computer back if I cant get Itunes to work on it.

IF you are able to get iTunes open you need to go into preferences and change the location of your music directory (Under Advanced) If you are unable to access iTunes you need to recreate the iTunes folder under my music... open up the directory on your F drive and copy the XML document. Place it into the iTunes directory under my music. Open that file up in an HTML editor and change the location of your files in the line that looks like this...
    file://localhost/C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/*You're Name*/My%20Documents/My%20Music/iTunes/iTunes%20Music/
Change the C: to the F: and update the rest of the path to point to the right directory. I hope this helps!

  • I am unable to get itunes to run on my powerbook g4. Please help!

My sister gave me her old powerbook g4. She erased the hard drive and relaoded the software. I cant get itunes to open or run. It said i needed quicktime so I downlaoded it from the apple site but it still will not run. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a different download that I need? Please help. I am new to apple computers so please be paitcent with me.

Your computer may need a series of updates to bring it up to speed with the last versions of software supported by 10.4  Note that these will themselves be several years old since Apple hasn't supported Tiger for several years.  In particular you cannot upgrade to the newest iTunes or use any brand new i-devices on a computer running 10.4
One way to do updates is to run Software Update.  Do the updates one by one since trying to do many at one time often results in problems.  Use Disk Utility to repair permissions before and after.
For general Tiger update questions I suggest you post on the Tiger 10.4 forum.  As for iTunes, the newest version you can run is 9.2.1 available at
iTunes 9.2.1 (the newest that will run under Tiger) - http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1056

  • I accidentally deleted a trash account in Mail.  Restore is greyed out.  How can I rebuild it or get it to function again?.

I accidentally deleted the trash mailbox instead of deleting the messages.  Rebuild is greyed out.  Use Super Duper to back up User folder.  Can I get this box tofunction again or how can I ever delete mail for this account?

I did delete all mail apps and library.  Got Pacifist and began the process all over again.  Then downloaded updates and it did recreate the mail mail boxes.  No trash at all, but it would allow me to delete items.  Finally explored and went to "mailbox" in the toolbar and went to "go to" and it had trash listed and I clicked on it and it put trash baskets for both of us!!!!  Now I wonder if I could have gone ther to begin with? I guess not.  The new version is 4.5 also.  Not sure why the messages about not working with Snow L. Thanks for all the input.

  • Cannot get itunes to run on xp.  Every time i download, it finishes installation then can't open because files are missing

I can't get itunes to download and actually work on my PC.  I have quicktime downloaded and functioning, have updated everything several times, uninstalled and reinstalled from different links...when it completes the installation phase,  I get a congrats screen, then it refuses to load because files are missing.
Sometimes, on startup, Itunes suddenly opens, although the shortcut still wont work.  It sees my Ipod (new, latest generation) sees my songs, attempts to sync then I get a 1450 error and the whole thing closes, not to be opened again until the next time I reboot and it occurs.
Anyone help?  I've turned off my firewall, filters, pop up blockers, everything I can think of.  Been at this a month now....

  • Hey new to Macs need help getting one(s) running again...

    Hey all,
So I acquired some old Macs from a local schools surplus sale. I have managed to get one operational (a G3 tower) but am now trying to get a MacBook running and have had a few issues. I have gotten it to the flashing folder screen but have been unable to get it to boot from the HDD. The HDD drive works I have installed OSX 10.3 on the drive via firewire but it seems that the Mac wont recognize that the drive is there. When I get into the Startup Manager screen nothing shows up except the mouse (which I can move around). The MacBook is an a1181 with 1GB of Ram installed. Being new to Macs I have no clue on how to continue. I know Macs do not have a BIOS but is there something similar that can be accessed? What about Firmware updating? I would prefer not to have to take it (and others) to the local Apple store. Any and all help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks.

I have the same MacBook (a1181) and had the same problem. My solution was to simply re-install snow leopard. Just buy a snow leopard CD from the apple store. Don't buy a mountian lion CD because it is not compatible with your MacBook. One you have the SL CD, insert it into the optical drive (CD drive) and boot the computer. When you hear the chime, press and hold down "C" on the keyboard and it should boot. If this fails, reboot and brews and hold option/alt when you hearths chime, then select the CD as it appears. Then simply install snow leopard, and enjoy your Mac! Hope this helps, and I will be happy to help with any problems or questions :)

  • Need some help getting my system running again.

So the other day I decided to do a full system upgrade with pacman -Syu. It then asked me to exit X and reload the Nvidia drivers.  Now, somehow switching to consoles got broken on my system (the ctrl+alt+F? key combination does nothing) so instead of exiting X I had to reboot. Something must have gone wrong with the kernel install because when I booted up I got a segmentation fault when trying to mount the local file system. Utilizing the fallback kernel didn't work, probably because I tried to install the kernel twice as the first time pacman gave me some errors. So then I booted up with the install CD and did a chroot back to my hard drive's root directory and tried to reinstall the kernel. What I ended up getting were a bunch of errors regarding line 60 of /lib/initcpio/functions. There was another line mentioned as well, line 132 or something like that, I can't remember exactly. After that I tried to reinstall mkinitcpio but I kept getting the same errors. Finally I just started removing every package I could find references to to reinstall later (which I'll admit was a rather irrational decision) and I apparently ended up removing something that pacman depends on so now I can't remove or install any packages (I really wish I actually knew what I was doing sometimes). Anyway I was wondering if any of you had any bright ideas as to how I can get my system up and running again without doing a clean install. I have a lot of stuff on there that I don't want to lose but I'm not sure where it all is so I'd have a tough time trying to back it up.

All I can say is "WOW".
You're probably as old as me.
Actually I'm 19. I just found it out in the garage one day while I was collecting parts for my system build.
EDIT: OK yeah, now I'm sure it's my keyboard that's the problem. I unplugged it and plugged it back in and the combinations worked for 3-4 minutes then stopped again.
EDIT 2: I just did some more experimentation and it turns out my alt keys don't work at all. Why it's only my alt keys and why it's both of them, I have no idea.

  • How to enable Bonjour Services to get iTunes videos to play?

I have been having trouble downloading videos from MIT OCW which , before ,I could download to iTunes or Real . Before, I was using IE9 and more recently Firefox for this purpose .
I began experiencing problems downloading these videos in iTunes so I uninstalled it , then had problems trying to install it (I have Vista 64-bit Home Premium) , the system would'nt download it until I tried it under Google Chrome , and it did install iTunes......
But the problems persisted when trying to download individual videos from a given course . I went through Mozilla and found out it needed an important update (downloaded on Jan. 1,2012)
and I also installed the free trial app TuneUp Utilities , which seems to have done well all of its functions . In its second module , it gave me the choice of disabling several programs to reduce the load....one of them was "Bonjour services" (or close),
and later , i found out it is needed to share iTunes files, etc. Another disabled file was a complement to QuickTime....I suspect5 that is why the video files will not open under Mozilla or IE . I have yet to try Google Chrome .

There is a free browser called Dolphin and it plays m.youtube site just fine and it's free at the IStore, safari is just getting left behind right now it seems ...
