How long to learn

Our shop is looking into moving towards Java and Web Deployed applications. We have several programmers who are experienced with linear programming. I am looking for realistic advice on how much time it would take to get our existing programmers proficient in the new technology.
Proficiency is defined as:
1) Able to identify and fix bugs in a current application.
2) Able to modify and enhance current applications.
3) Able to create new subsystems following standard set by current application.
Technologies that will be used:
1) HTML
2) XML
3) Cascading Style Sheets
4) Java Scripts
5) Java Server Pages
6) Java
7) Struts
8) Object Oriented Design
9) Eclipse - or similar development tool
10) IReports - or similar report generation tool
11) SSH Protocol
12) CVS Version Control
If it is helpful you could address the amount of time for each technology individually or all of them grouped together. Maybe this could be broken into two groups.
1) How much experience to be considered a entry level programmer?
2) How much experience to be considered a senior level programmer?

3) Able to create new subsystems following standard set by current application.ksherry, I would assume that you would expect the above 3 of any developer who knows the technologies so I wouldn't assume any training is really needed for those areas, ie.. tell them what to do and they'll do it.
As for how much training for the technologies, well you can't expect anyone to answer that because that would really depend on what experierience in each area your current staff has and what exactly you want them to do as individuals.
For example - when your hiring staff your web developers should be familiar with 1-5 and your java programmers should be familiar with 6-9 for example and you considier having anything else as a bonus.
What you are asking is not really a java question and nobody can answer it without knowing your staff, I assume that whatever company you work for have people to assess the skills of your staff and if it's you and this is how your going to find out then you really have no hope.
Your obviously going to have set jobs for everyone rather than everyone doing the same big job so first figure out what perticular jobs would need to be done (by breaking up the overall workload) then figure out which staff is capable of doing which perticular job.
Now maybe you can see why nobody but you can give you a definite answer.

Hi. First of all, sorry if this is in the wrong forum.
I am new to web-design (as in brand-new xD) and wish to learn Dreamweaver. With Dreamweaver being such a big application, with so many different tools etc I decided it would be best if I learned the languages I wish to use first, so as I know what Dreamwever is creating and I can 'fine-tune' my websites.
The languages I wish to learn are:
HTML
PHP
Javascript
MySQL (I am aware that this isn't a 'language', but would still like to learn how it works and use it effectively)
CSS
My questions are:
In which order should I learn these languages?
Which version of each language should I learn?
For example should I learn HTML5, with it being relatively new and not widely supported, but with the support growing so fast would it be worth just learning HTML5 straight away?
Can you reccomend any books etc for me to learn with? I am a full time college student, so will be teaching myself after college hours.
How long should I expect it to take to learn each language? (If you want to give the answer in days/months assume I will be spending 2hours per day average learning each language)
I do not want to learn every single detail about each language, but I do want to learn to a high enouhg level that I am comfortable with reading, understanding and editing my own code.
To help me understand your answers more clearly it would be great if you can just copy and paste this below (although feel free not to ):

How long does it take to get approval from iTunes Connect and how do I find out if they are even working on it? I'm not really sure if my application was even delivered - from the links in IBA. Any suggestions how one might push the right buttons at Apple?
Also went around in a big circle trying to get beyond the confusion of not having the right Apple ID when I've had it a long time. Confusion abounds and learning this forum also takes a new degree of patience. Humbling to say the least :-)

HT4623 how long does io 7 take to update from io6 on a 4S?

I'm wondering how long it takes for an upgrade of the software to occur?
To upgrade from ios 6 to ios 7, my phone has been hanging for over an hour on the start up screen with a timeline below the apple indicating it is about 33% of the way complate.
The upgrade now has taken about 4 and half hours so far.
As this is the first time I've upgraded the SW, since the 4S was my first iPhone, can anyone give me an indication of what to expect?

How can I learn to use my new Mac Air?

How can I learn to use my new Mac (I am a long time user of Windows), without having to go to Apple Store. Ours is 50 mi. away. Is there such a remote service? (Apple's or otherwise)

How long is Oracle Forms/Developer Suite to be supported?

I'm just curious how long Oracle are committed to supporting or creating new versions of Oracle Forms Developer / Developer Suite. I've heard, from one or two sources, that the intention is to abandon forms, and move the focus completely to Jdeveloper some time soon...
Is this true? does anyone know anything different?

I'm a senior forms developer (and to make a little humour i've just recently learned designer...)
I think the confusion comes also from "J2EE Application Development for Forms and Designer Developers" which can make us thinking oracle is pushing up to J2EE and prepare us for the Dead of Forms RIP ...
And also that forms developer like me are a little bit afraid because they probably have no skills in J2EE.
But for me it is clear now.
There is no reason to migrate Forms to J2EE with whatelse tool can be sell to you.
I tried some demos in the past with such tools and it makes me laugh, converting a simple master detail forms dept/emp.
What can such tools make with very complex forms and logic ?
But the question is if I had to create a new application will i still do it with Forms ?
And the answer (for me) is no, especially when I see what the next Jdeveloper 11g will be able to do (I tried the fusion order demo and i was really impressed)

And so did I but I bought the book "Oracle JDeveloper 10g for Forms and PL/SQL Developers" and I study it page after page to enter the ADF world and upgrade my knowledge.

but we, forms developers, we must not only focus on forms and its death, but also go ahead and invest so much time we did to learn forms in learning J2EE, BPEL and etc etc.

How long does a restore take?

Hello,
I am currently doing my first restore on my two week old iPhone.
I am now on the screen that says "restoring from backup".
Can anyone please tell me how long I can expect this stage to take?
It seems like the progress is very slow... About one green bar every 15 minutes....

After the restore from backup, the next screen put me back to the original restore page.
I ended up restoring it as new, and it didn't seem to take much time at all.
I have an 8G, not too much media.
At first, the sync wasn't showing up on the phone screen,
So I unplugged, restarted Itunes, plugged back in and re-synced.
I think it is ok now, but I learned my lesson about downloading apps directly from the phone.
I am glad for all those who take the time to respond here, it can be really helpful.

How long does it take for the IP Profile to update

Because the Home Hub kept disconnecting and re-booting I swapped it out in favour of my Netgear DG834G on the 23rd September and it sync'd in at 8728 down and 1022 up, but despite a solid connection since the change BT speedtester is still reporting that the IP profile has not changed from 6000.
How long will it take to come up to 7150 or should BTw intervene ?

I get 1750 as max I ever get. Sometimes go a little higher to 2000 but not often. Its generaly 1500, and loeer if Ive had a good storm. When there is a storm the hub usully resets multiple times and syncs at somethign stupid like 265Down 448K up so I always reset after a storm, usully within 5 days its back at 1500 and with good weather goes up higher. If not I ring up!
I am no expert. Correct me when I am wrong. Learning is good!

How long redo logs keep the transactions?

I learn Oracle and decide to do an experiment. There was a table in the test database. I deleted the file that contained this table via OS. And then I added transactions to this table.
I did 'insert' several times, then 'commit', then 'alter system switch logfile' several times, 'alter system flush buffer_cache', 'alter system flush shared_pool' and nothing happened. I could add and take data from this table successfully. Alert log showed the error only when I shutdown the database.
SQL> shutdown immediate

I understand that transactions are put in the redo logs at first, and then are transferred to the datafile on disk. I thought that command 'ALTER SYSTEM CHECKPOINT' writes transactions from redo logs to datafile on disk, but I was wrong. How long redo logs keep transactions? Is there the way to push data from redo logs to datafile?
I use Oracle 10.2.0.1.0.

i believe this time you will see the error message during your SQLsWRONG!probably you did not read the complete post of mine before saying WRONG. You tell me, if data file containing a table is deleted at OS level (in *nix), and then you try to insert data in this table and want to retrieve the data from the table (If data is not in db cache or cache has been flushed), from where data will come? Or if you want to insert some data into this table for which new extent are required to be allocated, where it will be allocated? Will your SQLs succeed or will return some error? Either SQL should return you data (which is not possible as data file is no there to fetch the data), or SQL should fail with some error message.
I mimicked the situation on IBM AIX, following is the outcome.

Activated new phone. How long to load OTA software upgrade?

I activated a brand new phone this morning that I purchased on E-bay (Verizon, Boulder C-711, made by Casio). I followed the steps on the Verizonwireless web site and dialed *228. I was told that Phone was successfully activated. However, I was advised that the phone was going to receive a OTA software update. The phone immediately went into some type of download mode and the screen on the phone shows the VerizonWireless logo.
I have been waiting over an hour for the phone to do something. The screen still shows the VerizonWireless logo and all keys (including the "END") do not respond. This is to say that I tried to depress the "END" key to shut the phone off and it would not shut off. I did this thinking the phone may have locked-up and I was trying to turn it off in an attempt to re-boot it.
Question 1 - How long shoud it take for the OTA software upgrade to load into my phone (1 hour, 2 hours, more, less)?
Question 2 - If phone is in fact locked up, where do I go from here?
Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

Please disregard my question. My son, who is very impatient, came home and learned that I had been waiting over hour and a half for phone to do something. He called VerizonWireless support and got a very helpful service Rep. on the line. She told hime to remove the battery then re-install the battery and turn the phone back on. The phone re-booted and the necessary software downloaded (it only took one minute for the software to download). The phone then re-booted again and everything seems fine. I have been able to make and receive calls now.
Hope this helps anyone else with similar problem.

How long while this remain in "Initing" state?

I have 3 RAID 5 arrays initializing right now through the same primary controller.
Each RAID 5 is comprised of 10 disks, and each disk looks like the following in sccli:
2 0 372.61GB 200MB NONE FRMT BSUN
Is there any way to estimate how long these initializations should require? I found a web page about 3511 hardware suggesting that an "ATA" array would take forever to initialize (over a day) with 8 disk RAID arrays.

As long as you like. It is a smart playlist so you can set the time to be whatever you want. To see the sttings and edit them slect the playlist and choose: File>Edit Smart Playlist.
However, there are better ways of creating a playlist. I suggest you spend a while learning about playlists and how to create them.

Up to date program! How long? (manually checking way)

I submitted all my information expecting the download code within the next 24 hours like they said. But it has been three days and I don't mean to be impatient, but how long should it take? I hear most people getting their first email really soon after they submit their info, but I have not gotten any word. I also did the longer way, where you send a proof of purchase picture... should that make it take any longer?
Should I just try resending all the information through the apple online store? (faster method I believe) Or would I just get in trouble for using my serial number twice?

it took me 5 business days, as well as a sat & sun to receive mine. you'll get 2 emails. one with a zip file for you to get the code, and another with a password to open the zip. it was beyond frustrating having to wait for this to come in.
hang in there. you'll need your patience to learn all the new hand gestures. my main gripe so far is i prefer using google chrome as my browser. the gestures for chrome were eliminated and only work in safari, of which i don't care for.
other than that, it is what it is.

How long should a ProRes 422 HQ render take?

I am trying to get a good guage on a time estimate for a ProRes 422 HQ export. Here are the specs...
FCPX 10.0.8
MacBook Pro 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB RAM 1333 MHz DDR3
Running on Osx 10.7.5
My project is 71 minutes long... some titles, not graphics heavy.. Mainly RED RAW footage with some 5D mixed in.
SHARE option says a full 4K 422 PR HQ file would be about 381 GB.
About how long would you imagine the export taking? I am in the midst of rendering all right now in prep for final VIDEO ONLY export.
Final destination is to be BluRay via Compressor.
Secondary question.. with the above specified... Do I need to export in full 4K, or should I just go with 1080p, which it will ultiamtely be in... I want highest quaslity possible, of course... but if it is ultimately to be shown on 2K projection, is exporting the ProRes in 4K necessary?

Can you explain what you mean by don't Compress twice?
If my original stuff is RED RAW 4K (for the most part), should I do the Master File export as ProRes 422 HQ at the maximum file size? And then open the saved file in Compressor? Or are you saying just send it to Compressor from FCPX without exporting?
This is my first time using Compressor, so learning curve in play here. Thanks.

I can't remember, but I thought when I setup my email accounts under GB there was an option to select how long emails were kept on the phone. After upgrading to ICS, I can't find this option. How do you adjust how long email is retained with ICS?

How do I customize my personal email settings?
If you would like to change account name, how long email is kept on the handset, account passwords, or server/port/security settings, follow steps below:
Open Applications tray
Tap Accounts
Tap the email account your wish to edit
Select General settings to change account name, reply name or email address
Select Incoming / Outgoing server to adjust Server name, port #, username & password, and security settings
