How's my line? Inconsistent connections

Good evening,
I am emailing on behalf of a friend who isn't very technical but has a long standing issue with their broadband.
First I'd like to explain that my customer is around 3.5mi from the exchange and that the area he lives in is rural but on the fringe of town. There is a private lane to access his house which is a further 0.5mi from the main road. I used to rent a cottage from them on the same piece of land and I used to get a very consistent 2mb line about 7 years ago. They however, have terrible connection problems. The connection is less than 512kb and the line drops very frequently. There main house is 20 paces from my old cottage where the connection back then was excellent.
They have spoken to BT many times over the past couple of years but always seem to get nowhere as it either gets a little better (connectivity periods, not speed) or something isn't acted upon. However, they are now running three different companies from there and really need to get a faster connection and a far more stable one at that!
I have logged onto the home hub and checked the line status and thought I would post them on here to see what people think of the statistics:
Modulation: G.992.1 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down kbps): 96 / 416
Output Power (Up/Down dBm): 10.0 / 13.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down dB): 31.5 / 63.5
SN Margin (Uo/Down dB): 7.0 / 9.0
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / ALCB
Loss of Framing: 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local / Remote): 74 / 0
Loss of Power: 0 / 0
Loss of Link: 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 79 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 13,636
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 974
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 619
Line Profile: Interleaved
I'd appreciate it if someone could make some sense of this for me so that I can contact BT with the right suggestions to make to them as we seem to be getting nowhere with it.
Thanks in advance,
Paul Pitchford.

with an attenuation of 63.5 (as high as hub shows) you are line is at least 4.6km from the exchange and probably even more.
have you tried the quiet line test dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done witha corded phone
are you connected to the master or test socket or somewhere else?

• How do I get a dotted line to connect nodes in a JTree?

I am trying to recreate a Windows Explorer application, does anyone know how they get the dotted lines to connect the nodes in the JTree????

JTree uses a specific line style to represent the edges between nodes. The default is no edges, but we can set JTrees lineStyle client property so that each parent node appears connected to each of its child nodes by an angled line:
myJTree.putClientProperty("JTree.lineStyle", "Angled");
We can also set this property such that each tree cell is separated by a horizontal line:
myJTree.putClientProperty("JTree.lineStyle", "Horizontal");
To disable the line style:
myJTree.putClientProperty("JTree.lineStyle", "None");
As with any Swing component, we can also change the UI resource defaults used for all instances of the JTree class. For instance, to change the color of the lines used for rendering the edges between nodes as described above, we can modify the entry in the UI defaults table for this resource as follows:
UIManager.put("Tree.hash", new ColorUIResource(Color.lightGray))
Hope this serves your purpose.

• How can I tell if my phone line is connected to a ...

Hi, I have been trying to find out if my phone line is connected to the street cabinet or directly to the exchange as the checker says I am unable to get bt infinity. The house 2 doors away seems to be able to get it and having looked at the spreadsheet (google fusion table) it says that 42% of line on my postcode are enabled. Is there a way of finding if I am in that 42%. My postcode: tn104pb Hope someone can help Thanks

I vaguely remember being informed that something like 4% of telephone lines in the UK are EO - I'm afraid I don't have any references with which to back that up though
Having worked in that part of the network for many years, I don`t think I remember any personal customers on EO cables.
Office blocks, or old established businesses in city centres, were the only ones. That would account for the 4%.
The lack of flexibility was the main issue with EO cables, with the volume of "churn" of domestic customers, it would not have been practical.

• How do you implement a query that examines if a line is connected at both ends?

Hey all,
I want to write a query that examines if a line is connected at both ends (a very common rule in the area of topology) but I cannot seem to find an easy way to do so. (By connected I mean that there is another line that 'touches' the given line.)
The problem I have is that I cannot find any way to retrieve the start or end point of a line geometry. (I am using Oracle 8.1.7.)
If someone can give me any suggestions I would be very grateful.
Thanks in advance,
Johan Behrenfeldt

Hey,
Thanks for both of the answers.
I eventually solved the problem using Java stored procedures. However, in the case that someone is looking for the answer to the same question I was asking I just wanted to point out a few things.
Jens' solution seems correct and it was my first approach as well. However, there is a case when it fails and that is if the lines connect in the shape of a triangle. You would find a line that has connected lines at both ends but the connected lines would have a non-empty intersection and would therefore be discarded incorrectly.
The second suggested solution works, but I have found it less than trivial to find the ordinate tuple that contains the start point of the line string. Many GIS applications insists on using the ordinate array as a storage place for data. They will use the sdo_etype 0 to hide the information from Spatial, but when manipulating the geometries manually they cause a great deal of trouble. (Try writing an sql query to retrieve the start point of a line.)
The latter is, however, what I ended up using in the end. With the help of Java stored procedures the task became fairly easy.
Thank you, in any case, for all your help, and I apologize if I come off as a smart-allick here. ;-)

• How to do a Generic Connectivity (ODBC) ?

Hello,
Generic Connectivity provide Oracle Database to connect another
database via ODBC. In my case, it is Oracle 8.1.6 which connects
to Sybase Enterprise 11 on Win NT. The Module "Generic
Connection" is installed. I view it by the Oracle Universal
Installer and I have configured the Windows ODBC Manager to
connect to Sybase.
This is what I've done step by step:
1. C:\Oracle\Ora81\hs\Admin\iniths_syb.ora
HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO = SPS_NACIONAL
HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL = ON
HS_FDS_TRACE_FILE_NAME = hs_syb.log
2. C:\Oracle\Ora81\Network\Admin\Listener.ora
LISTENER =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = nacional)(PORT = 1521))
SID_LIST_LISTENER =
(SID_LIST =
(SID_DESC =
(GLOBAL_DBNAME = oracle)
(ORACLE_HOME = c:\Oracle\Ora81)
(SID_NAME = oracle)
(SID_DESC =
(SID_NAME = hs_syb)
(ORACLE_HOME = c:\Oracle\Ora81)
(PROGRAM = hs_syb)
I reload the listener by the following command :
lsnrctl
stop
start
3. C:\Oracle\Ora81\Network\Admin\Tnsname.ora
ORACLE =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = host)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = oracle)
hs_syb =
(DESCRIPTION=
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = host)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SID=hs_syb)
(HS = OK)
I test the tnsname at the prompt command line :
tnsping hs_syb
(It's OK)
4. Database Link
CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK syb
USING 'hs_syb';
5. Test database link
select * from emp@syb;
And Errors occur :
ORA-28509: unable to establish a connection to non-Oracle system
ORA-02063: preceding line from SYB
6. I read again the documentation
http://technet.oracle.com/doc/oracle8i_816/server.816/a76960/hs_g
enco.htm
and I found some tables to be feed with data by the HS_ADMIN
packtage :
This is what I have added :
EXEC DBMS_HS.CREATE_FDS_CLASS ('hs_syb','Uses ODBC Driver')
EXEC DBMS_HS.CREATE_FDS_INST ('hs_syb','hs_syb','SYC Sybase
System 10/11')
EXEC DBMS_HS.CREATE_INST_INIT
('hs_syb','hs_syb','HS_DB_NAME','SYBDATA','F')
(Drop procedure :
EXEC DBMS_HS.DROP_INST_INIT
('hs_syb','hs_syb','HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO')
EXEC DBMS_HS.DROP_FDS_INST ('hs_syb','hs_syb')
EXEC DBMS_HS.DROP_FDS_CLASS ('hs_syb');
I test one more time the connection,
And I have the same error message as step 5.
7. I put in the initialization file (initoracle.ora) the
parameter
Hs_Autoregister = true (It is true by default and it doesn't
change errors. Is it another parameters for HS ?)
In fact, I don't really understand the notion of "AGENT" for HS
(Heterogeneous Services) in Oracle. Is it something to enable or
is it automatic because the iniths_syb.ora file is in the path
ORACLE_HOME\hs\admin ???
What is it missing for the Generic Connectivity ? Any
suggestion ? Say me what is the wrong step in this process or
what I have forgotten.
Thank you in advance.
Jobar Team

Hello
You're right, step two needs to set (PROGRAM = hsodbc). I understand this when I saw hsodbc.exe in the path ORACLE_HOME\Bin (and at prompt I try agtctl.exe but without sucess, an utility for Heterogeneous Services).
Now when I test the connection I can hear Oracle running something.
This is what I've done step by step (following my previous message)I test with Sybase Entreprise and Sybase Anywhere :
8. C:\Oracle\Ora81\Database\initoracle.ora
I set a parameter in init file and I reload Oracle database :
global_names = false
OR in SQL+
alter session set global_names=false;
WITH SYBASE ENTREPRISE
9. C:\Oracle\Ora81\hs\Admin\iniths_syb.ora
At the beginning my iniths_syb.ora file was wrong then I correct parameters by viewing errors in C:\Oracle\Ora81\hs\trace :
#Using a dsn file generate by the Windows ODBC Manager
HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO="FILEDSN=C:\sybase.dsn"
HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL = ON
HS_FDS_TRACE_FILE_NAME = C:\hs_syb.log
set SYBASE=C:\\Sybase\\ASE
Contents of sybase.dsn
[ODBC]
DRIVER=Sybase System 11
UID=USERNAME
SRVR=SVRNAME
DB=master
10. Test Database link
CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK syb
CONNECT TO USERNAME IDENTIFIED BY SECRET
USING 'hs_syb';
select * from anytable@syb;
ORA-00942: table or view does not exist
[Transparent gateway for ODBC]393330(0,0,1[[]])
ORA-02063: preceding 2 lines from SYB
I try to set parameters in iniths_syb.ora without success :
HS_DB_DOMAIN=SVRNAME
HS_DB_NAME=master
HS_FDS_DEFAULT_OWNER=USERNAME
WITH SYBASE ANYWHERE
11. C:\Oracle\Ora81\hs\Admin\iniths_any.ora
#Using a dsn file generate by the Windows ODBC Manager
HS_FDS_CONNECT_INFO="FILEDSN=C:\anywhere.dsn"
HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL = ON
HS_FDS_TRACE_FILE_NAME = C:\hs_any.log
Contents of anywhere.dsn
[ODBC]
DRIVER=Adaptive Server Anywhere 6.0
UID=USERNAME
Integrated=No
AutoStop=Yes
EngineName=SERVICE
12. Test Database link
CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK anywhere
CONNECT TO USERNAME IDENTIFIED BY SECRET
USING 'hs_any';
select * from anytable@anywhere;
In SYBASE ANYWHERE I've got this data
select * from anytable
go
dateini col1 col2
2002-02-01 00:00:00.0000 1.5000 1.4000
In ORACLE I've got
SQL> select * from anytable@anywhere;
dateini col1 col2
01/02/02 1 1
There isn't the decimal.
The reason doesn't like to be 1.4 or 1,4 because in Anywhere and in Oracle It is the same insert "insert into anytable values ('02/02/01', 1.5, 1.4)".
13. Now I try a select of one column
select col1 from anytable@anywhere;
this error occur :
ORA-00904 invalid column name
I am sure that this column exist ! "select * from anytable@anywhere;" and "select count(*) from anytable@anywhere;" are OK.
14. And this doesn't work anymore :
insert into bx_surcharge@anywhere values ('01/02/02',1,2);
ORA-02047: cannot join the distributed transaction in progress
15. Step 6 and 7 doesn't mean to be necessary ? And Where are used parameters of the "ODBC Connectivity Requirements" in the documentation. http://technet.oracle.com/doc/oracle8i_816/server.816/a76960/hs_genco.htm (And How to use Datatype Mapping ?)
So How to successful a ODBC connection (Maybe I forget some parameters) ? For me, using a connection with ODBC is generic and have to work fine with any type of datasource, isn't it ?
Have you got any idea to deal ? Thanks a lot.

Has anyone got any idea? Please let me know
BTW, you need more clarification on the question, let me know please.

• How to associate lines in a text file as an elements of the Vector?

Hi!
I have used BufferedReader(new FileReader(c:/java/MyText.txt)) to read from MyText.txt file. Now I know how to load content of this file (every line in file describes each photo in my photo-set) into a Vector. But how to associate lines of MyText.txt as an elements of the Vector?
Thanks Felipe for his help.
DM.

Thank you telism,
Let me tell you the whole story.
I'm trying to write an application which has to show my image files (set of photos) with a text description. The list of image files placed into the JList. So, when I select a file from the JList it shows me an image (everything is OK).
But, every image has it's text description in MyText.text file. It's a file with each text line for every image. Actually, I am trying to connect two actions - showing my image and setting it's specified text line description (from MyText.txt) in a JTextArea. I thought that the best way to do this with my text it is like I did it with my images through Vector. But No Success.
Can You help me on that? If You will show me how to do it on my example I will really appreciate it.
Thank You DM.
Here is my application:

• How draw a line between two buttons?

Hi.
I want to make two movable buttons connected with a line. When changing position of any button you'll change look of the line of course. I know how to draw a line but after MOUSE_DOWN, and I don't know how to remove an old one line, and how make this line to be shown all the time?
My code
btn2.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN,
mouseDownHandler3);
btn2.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, mouseUpHandler3);
btn3.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, mouseDownHandler3);
btn3.addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, mouseUpHandler3);
// Define a mouse down handler (user is dragging)
function mouseDownHandler3(evt:MouseEvent):void {
var object = evt.target;
// we should limit dragging to the area inside the canvas
object.startDrag();
function mouseUpHandler3(evt:MouseEvent):void {
var obj = evt.target;
obj.stopDrag();
//spisujemy x,y
var x2Pos:Number = btn2.x;
var y2Pos:Number = btn2.y;
var x3Pos:Number = btn3.x;
var y3Pos:Number = btn3.y;
trace (x3Pos);
trace (y3Pos);
var roundObject:Shape = new Shape();
roundObject.graphics.lineStyle(2, 0x990000, .75);
roundObject.graphics.moveTo(x2Pos, y2Pos);
roundObject.graphics.lineTo(x3Pos, y3Pos);
this.addChild(roundObject);
//this.removeChild(this.getChildAt(this.numChildren -1));
Source .FLA: http://www.mediafire.com/?y2tyzz4zxun

Here's a solution that you can adapt for two or more buttons....
var btns:Array = [btn2, btn3]; //instances on stage
//set btn handlers
function setBtns():void {
for(var i=0; i<btns.length; i++) {
btns[i].buttonMode = true;
btns[i].addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_DOWN, grab);
btns[i].addEventListener(MouseEvent.MOUSE_UP, drop);
setBtns();
//draws lines btween all btns while a drag is occurring
function drawLines(e:Event=null):void {
graphics.clear();
graphics.lineStyle(2, 0xFF0000);
graphics.moveTo(btns[0].x+(btns[0].width/2), btns[0].y+(btns[0].height/2));
for(var j=btns.length-1; j>=1; j--) {
graphics.lineTo(btns[j].x+(btns[j].width/2), btns[j].y+(btns[j].height/2));
//handlers
function grab(event:MouseEvent):void {
event.target.startDrag();
addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, drawLines);
function drop(event:MouseEvent):void {
event.target.stopDrag();
removeEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, drawLines);
drawLines();

• How many Story Lines may I have ?

Hello everyone!!!
So, I'm a musician and I wanna make music videos to youtube (just like thousands of other people do)...
Wanna make my videos with FCP X...
I saw some videos (tutorials) on youtube about tips and tricks on FCPX... Problem is that at any video (tutorial) I watch there's only a main story line...
On some videos I may see the main story line and a secondary track above...
Once I saw a tutorial that I can transform the secondary line into a story line - and then it will act just like my main story line.
What I want to point out is that as a musician and making a music video, I would need maybe 6~9 story lines (for all instruments and stuff)... Because spliting the videos and sycing them over and over again would be annoying... It would be a lot easier if I could just have how many story lines I want, have them all sync and then just split the videos...
(Hope I was clear enough, english is not my main language, sorry for that)
So, to simplify, my question is: How many story lines can I have in FCPX ? (at least 2 I know I can have 'cuz I've already seen this on tutorials, wanna know if it is possible to have more than 2 or if 2 is the limit)
Thanks already everbody!!

Salivan, you can have as many storylines as you like.
What you need to do is place your first or main instrument I the primary storyline. Add your second instrument as a connected clip, and turn that into a storyline by selecting it, right click & select create storyline.
Now there is no reason why you can't add another connected clip above the secondary storyline, and place that clip or clips into another storyline.... and so on

• How to configure OracleXEClient to connect to OracleXE?

Oracle Database 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.1) Express Edition for Microsoft Windows
http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/database/xe/htdocs/102xewinsoft.html
I download OracleXE.exe (157MB) and OracleXEClient.exe (29.5MB)
I installed OracleXE and it works well.
After I installed OracleXEClient, click on [Start], Programs, Oracle Client 10g Express Edition, Run SQL Command Line
I wish to connect to sys by typing (my password for sys is ora10g_manager):
connect sys/ora10g_manager@xe as sysdba
and the error is as follows:
ERROR:
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
Since I have also installed Oracle Develioper Suite 10g R2 on a separate ORACLE_HOME. I add XE by setting the tnsmaes.ora in ORACLE_HOME\NETWORK\ADMIN\tnsnames.ora
XE =
(DESCRIPTION =
(ADDRESS_LIST =
(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 127.0.0.1)(PORT = 1521))
(CONNECT_DATA =
(SERVICE_NAME = XE)
I click on [Start], Programs, Oracle Client 10g Express Edition, Run SQL Command Line, enter
connect sys/ora10g_manager@xe as sysdba
and it connects suffessfully.
My question is if a user installed Oracle XE and Oracle XE Client but no other Oracle products in other ORACLE_HOME, how can one configure Oracle XE Client to connect to Oracle XE Database?

1. Create a new user Variable called “TNS_ADMIN”
Assume ORACLE_HOME of XE is in C:\oracle\product\oraclexe
Since when you install Oracle 10g Express Edition, a tnsnames.ora file has already been created for you in C:\oracle\product\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\NETWORK\ADMIN\tnsnames.ora
•Either set TNS_ADMIN in DOS prompt or in a New User Variable
You can set TNS_ADMIN to your local path of Oracle Express Database
set TNS_ADMIN= C:\oracle\product\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\NETWORK\ADMIN\tnsnames.ora
or you can copy tnsnames.ora from C:\oracle\product\oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\NETWORK\ADMIN\tnsnames.ora to C:\oracle\product\XEClient, and set TNS_ADMIN in the User Variable
Click on [Start], Programs, Oracle Client 10g Express Edition, Run SQL Command Line
SQL> connect sys/ora10g_manager@xe as sysdba
Other ways to connect to Oracle Express in DOS prompt
Method 1: Set TNS_ADMIN in DOS prompt
In DOS prompt,
C:\> set TNS_ADMIN=C:\oracle\product\XEClient
C:\> C:\oracle\product\XEClient\bin\sqlplus.exe /nolog
SQL> connect sys/ora10g_manager@XE as sysdba
Method 2: No need to set TNS_ADMIN in DOS prompt but enter the full connection string in one line of DOS command
Set NLS_LANG in DOS Prompt
C:\>set NLS_LANG=English
Enter the following DOS command all in ONE line
C:\>sqlplus "sys/ora10g_manager@(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=127.0.0.1)(PORT=1521))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=XE))) as sysdba"

• How to determine who is connected via AFP in WORKGROUP

I am running a WORKGROUP configuration leopard server on a MP early 2008. Using the server widget I can tell if there are users connected but I have not figured out how to determine Who is connected and how to contact them if I want to reboot the server. Moreover, how do I determine what users are doing? The AFP log is turned off in this config and I can't get it to come on. From the command line I could use serveradmin to find out who is connected but in the workgroup config it is not clear if it is OK to run serveradmin since the GUI counterpart "Server Aministrator" is forbidden unless you upgrade to the advanced config. Does anybody know if the CLI serveradmin is OK to use in the WORKGROUP config or know any other way to determine who connected via AFP and SMB and what files they have open? This semms like a terrible security risk without knowing who is doing what.
Thanks
-Chris

Just in case others have the same question, I have determined that the CLI tools can be used to query the file services without any apparent detrimental effects while using our leopard server 10.5.3 in a workgroup configuration. Hence the names of AFP users can be determined from the command line by:
sudo serveradmin command afp:command = getConnectedUsers | grep name
and the smb users can be found with:
sudo serveradmin command smb:command = getConnectedUsers | grep name
Hope that helps

that's what I am doing... after viewing the report, I call the close method on the window closing event of the container window. but the connection is still open. I had a lot of other issues with my jdbc driver but after downgrading to an older version those issues are resolved.Only this one is still there! Is there any other way to close the connection (like using dbcontroller or etc.)?
