Does anyone know how to apply a video effect across several clips in a sequence, as opposed to doing each clip individually?

Nest the sequence and apply the effect to the nested sequence.

Applying One effect to several clips (not tracks!)

i have one track with about 40 clips in it of different cut up audio. i want to apply one effect to several different clips at once. how do i do that?
i know how to apply the one effect to one clip, but if i try and shift click four different clips, and then go to add an effect to it, the effects are grayed out
and i really don't want to go into each clip, add an effect, adjust it and save it for every clip.
is there an easier way?

There are a few ways to do this. The simple way is to apply the filter to one clip. Open it into the viewer and change the parameters as you like. Select all the other clips and drag the filter name from the viewer onto the other clips. They all have the same setting.

How to apply multiple effects on one clip

Here's a simple question, so I guess there's got to be a simple solution. Is it possible to have more than just one effect on one clip? If yes, how can I do that? I've searched the iMovie help, but it didn't give me any answer.

No, you cannot apply more than one effect at a time in iMovie '09.
However, you can always adjust Video Levels, Exposure, Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, etc. in Inspector.

How move an entire mix or apply a mix on several clips?

First excuse my english...
I don't understand how to work in Audition. I export my Premiere Pro project in Audition CS6 to create and modify my sounds, insert them into my tracks and mix them. Then, sometimes I want to go back on some little things like add one second on a shot for example. Indeed, a movie seems different when the sound is added and sometimes I have to change my final cut AFTER the mix is done.
So I insert my sounds as clips into the multitrack panel, and mix them with the volume keyframes of each tracks. Indeed I can't adjust the clip volume individually because sometimes there are many shorts clips on a track and I have to adjust the volume on the entire sequence. For example: on a walk I put footsteps one by one on my track, then I want to fade in or out the footsteps sequence so I do my mix on the track.
The problem is if I want to move all my sequence forward or backward. I can move the clips but the track mix stay where it is. It's impossible to select the keyframes and move them with the clips. I made a feature request for that but I'm pretty sure that it will never added.
The solution would be to do the mix directly on the clips. But if it's possible on a single clip, you cannot do this on a group. If I group all my footsteps clips, I can only adjust the volume of each clips individually so I can't do my fade-in/out effect.
The only solution I found is to copy all my clips in a new session, export the mix in a new wav and import it on my first multitrack session. Very long and annoying!
How do you work? Do you first place and lock your sounds before doing the mix? So when the mix is finished you never change the length of it? How can I do when I realize once the mix is finished that I want to add or remove one second of my mix somewhere in the middle of it? It's imposible?
Or do you never use the mix directly on the tracks but only on the clips? So how you do when you want to adjust volume, or pan or other effect on several clips at a time?

One thing you could do is to Bounce to New Track in the Multitrack menu. You can select what you want to bounce either by time or by selected clips. Thus you can create a new combined audio file in sync on another track which you can then add fades to as required. Also you will be able to move or edit this new mixed clip as you want.

How to accomplish a motion keyframe move across several clips?

I'm very familiar with how you acheive motion moves within one clip in
the timeline.
However, I can't figure out how to make two of three consequtive clips
make one continous motion move.
For instance, lets say I have three still digital images, 5 second each, in the timeline, one after another. I want the first still to start at 50% size and want a continuous growth to 100% at the end of the third clip. I know how'd I'd do
this within one clip (a motion keyframe of 50% at the head of the clip and a 100% keyframe at the end of the clip.
But how do you make one smooth continuous move across several clips in a row? I realize I could take those three clips, export them out as a quicktime and bring them back in as one clip, but that seems a long way to go everytime you want to do this. And if I nest the three clips, when I go to doubleclick them back to the viewer to add the keyframes, the nest just opens up again into it's own sequence.
So how is this accomplished?
Any feedback would be appreciated.

How to apply an effect to multiple/all clips

I'm sure I'm missing something elementary here, but I can't find a way to apply an effect to multiple clips at once in PE7. Specifically I'd like to apply the Auto Levels adjustment effect across all clips in my project (makes sense because they were all recorded at the same time), but at best can onely copy the effect from one clip or section on the timeline to another; one at a time. When working with a project that has upward of 100 scenes, copy and pasting to each individual clip seems like a lot of tedious work that should be easier.
Does anyone have any suggestions or information that could point me in the right direction?

You have discovered one of the little "gottchas" with Copy/Paste Attributes - it does it for all.
I do not know of a way to eliminate Effects globally, i.e. multiple Clips in this case. Unless there's a neat workaround, or secret switch, I think it will be by hand. That is the way it is in PrPro. Don't know about PE, but In PrPro one can select some of the Effects to Copy/Paste Attributes (for many Effects, but not all).
Side note: Render your Clips and watch them closely with Auto Levels. I find that it "pulses" and that manually setting Levels (not the Auto one) is better.

Best way to apply same effect to multiple clips?

I have a bunch of short clips in the timeline. I want them all to end with a "fade to black" and I want the audio to fade to 0 db. I know how to do this by applying the "fade to black" and then applying 1/2 a crossfade 0db. Is there a way to apply these two effects to several clips at once? How do I apply the audio and video effects together to a single clip with one move?

create the effect using the opacity and volume overlays on one clip in the timeline, then right-click and copy. Select (ie highlight) the other clips you want, right-click any of them and choose 'paste attributes'. From the pop up you'll want to check the relevant options, opacity and audio levels, and that's it.

Applying video effects in Premiere at the track or media level?

I am trying to adjust to the Premiere workflow, coming from Vegas, and have a question regarding the application of video effects. Premiere seems to apply effects at the clip level - for example, if there is a cut in the clip, the effect is only applied to a portion of the clip. Vegas allows for the application of effects at the media level - no matter how many cuts have been made - or at the track level. Is there something comparable in Premiere? I have been trying to apply the Neat Video effect, and the only thing I can think of is to select multiple clips when applying it, but it seems to crash Premiere when I do that. Any advice on making this work would be much appreciated.
On a related topic, does Premiere apply effects in a chain, as they are added, or does it automatically perform an reffect first if it should be applied first? In other words, does it matter in what order the effects are applied, and if so, is there a rough order of how they should be applied?

I'm running Premiere Pro 5.5 and have been able to lasso and apply my effects to several of my clips all at once.
Once you apply the effect and fine-tune (if need be), you can right-click and create a User Preset to help save time (say if all of your clips needed to be color corrected). The User Presets are the first folder listed in the Effects bin.
As far as the effects order are concerned, you pretty much have to play around with those yourself. I use a Video Limiter effect with a ProcAmp and have noticed that if they aren't in a certain order (the first listed effect is the first applied...) it changes how it looks and not always for the best. Best bet is to play around and see what order of video effects works best for you.

Help! Trouble applying video effects

Hi. Hope someone can help me!
I can't seem to apply video filters to my clips in FCP. I've tried everything, including various methods for applying filters and trying different filter types. The only thing that seems to work is when I add an effect to the master clip (not ideal!), and even this method fails as soon as I drag the clip from the viewer into the timeline. Then, poof! No effects!
I don't understand why this is happening.
I'm using Mac OS 10.4.11 and FCP 5.0.4.

If the program was working fine, and now isn't, or just isn't working the way it should, the first things to do are:
1) Trash your FCP preferences. Download the appropriate version of FCP Rescue at http://www.fcprescue.com and run it.

2) Open the Disk Utility and Repair Permissions.
3) Shut down for 10 min. Go for a quick walk around the block and get SOME exercise today. Come back, turn on the computer and see how things are.

Applying video fx messes up clip

i've been editing this video on imovie, and every time i apply a video effect on a clip, the clip looks blank on the timeline. and when i hit play, it starts playing the middle part of the next clip. then it just messes up the whole timing and flow of the rest of the clips.
it can't be an "effect in - effect out" thing because i was also trying to use slow motion and it doesn't have that option. i don't know if it was because i recently installed some mac updates but the effects were working fine before the installation (unless it was just a coincidence).
help, i want to finish this video using imovie, otherwise i'd be forced to learn final cut (taking up precious time when i have a deadline). thanks!

Same happened to me (more or less) the other day. Timeline completely messed up and clips "confused" as how to appear and play.
Seems like there is some transition getting in the way and this kind of messes it all up.
I had to re-edit a clip, and I could finish my project. But the reason for all this is quite mesterious to me...

Disable Effects across multiple Clips

Hello. I was wondering if there was a way to disable/enable effects across multiple clips. I have done all the color correction/grading and have decided to cut another version. Unfortunately the effects I have added all need to be rendered. I want to turn off the effects do the edit, and turn them back on after I am complete. Is this possible? Thanks, Jeremy

Here is a solution I use, but it has one weird step in it that I am not sure is just a quirk of my system . . .
Open the Sequence Settings.
Click on the Render Control Tab.
Uncheck the Render & Playback - Filters CheckBox
Click OK.
Now, on my system, in order to not display the CC filters I've applied I have to do these little extra steps:
Switch the RT playback control to Safe RT, then back to Unlimited RT.
Now the sequence plays without displaying the filters.
To restore the effect of the filters, you reverse the steps-
Open the Sequence Tab.
Click on the Render Tab.
Check the Render & Playback - Filters Checkbox, then click OK.
and again, don't know if this just my system but -
Switch the RT playback control to Safe RT, then back to Unlimited RT.
You'll see your Color Correction again, and it will need to be rendered.

How Do You Apply Process Effects To Multiple Clips In A Multi-Track?

A multi-track sequence brought over from Premiere, I have over a dozen clips from a funeral service video that need noise reduction.
But, because it's a process effect, I can only work on one clip at a time. Furthermore, I may need to apply several passes of the NR effect to eliminate the noise without sounding weird.
How then do I apply that effect (and its parameters) to the rest of the clips in the sequence?
In Premiere, you can copy and paste effects (and their parameters) from one clip to another. There is no such thing in Audition that I can see.

It seems you want to do some broadband de-noise processing. While one can do a noisefloor sampling from one clip and apply it to others (great for when you have multiple takes from the same setup), it may be best to noise sample each individually if the mic has moved position enough to cause the tonal characteristics to change.
An example would be if on-screen talent is walking in an outdoor location. In one part of the location, a particular section of the clip has a lot of BG traffic noise. Another recording has a fountain in the BG - while it still may have some of the traffic in it, the predominant BG noisefloor is "strong fountain/weak traffic", so like others have mentioned, it makes more sense to make a new BG sampling to match the characteristics of this clip.
All that being said, here is how you BATCH PROCESS / broadband de-noise a bunch of clips, it's a 4-tiered / 21-step process when starting from scratch.
                              NOTE: there is a manual cheat after the Batch Processing lesson - skip to that if you wish
(WARNING - this type of processing is most successful if the file has been EQ'd or gain boosted (if needed) before processing. This is also true for the noisefloor sample. It should be taken from the pre-adjusted clip so that it all matches level)
1) find / open a source clip that best represents the BG noisefloor you wish to sample as your broadband source for processing,
then in the WAVEFORM editor window press alt-shift-C to save this selection as a new file - give it a unique name that represents its function
     a. ideally, this selection will be more than 5000 samples
     b. should be free of non-BG noise sounds (Dx, footsteps, mouth sounds, it should sound like a very short ambiance loop)
2) with your new sample saved and your source clip still open in the UI:
     a. load your noise print file
     b. adjust the Noise Reduction and Reduce by sliders (I suggest you start with a noise reduction value of 100% with a reduce value of 3 to 6 dB)
     c. under Advanced Settings, set Spectral to 0%, Smoothing to 20, Precision to 7, and Transition width to 2dB - these settings
         are like painting not with a wide brush but with a thinner brush, which means less cancellation of frequencies you want to keep and less artifacting
     d. toggle on/off the Output Noise Only function to see just what you are subtracting in your process - a great way to make adjustments until your
         noisefloor-only sound is free of Dx and other Production sounds
     e. optional advanced step - in the process UI Frequency window, you can draw a curve to select the frequency ranges that will be processed - this is another
         way of "thinning the brush" so that you are NOT processing where it's not needed in the broadband range - i.e. hiss from a low-quality mic,
         open the FA window [alt-Z] to see realtime Freq. Analysis on playback of your clip with the processing;
         adjust your settings and the curve in the window to counter the frequency range of the noisefloor - this process is like alchemy, wicked awesome
     f. once you're happy with your settings, click the Save Effects Preset button (down-arrow on hard-drive) next to the Presets pulldown button.
               do NOT apply your process yet - that's the next step
3) now, you're going to create the Favorite that the Batch Process will use to process your clips
     a. select Favorites / Start Recording Favorite (every user function of the software is now being recorded into a macro)
     b. in the Noise Reduction UI, click the Load Noise Print button and select your saved file
     c. now, select your preset from the pulldown menu
     d. click the Select Entire File button below the UI Freq. window
     e. click Apply
     f. click Favorites / Stop Recording Favorite
4) now, under EDIT, select Batch Process
     a. select your new Favorite from the pulldown tab
     b. drag and drop the files into the Batch window or load them from the Load button in the upper left of the Batch window
     c. click the Export Settings button in the bottom left
     d. set any pre/postfix labeling additions (this works a lot like Adobe Bridge's Batch Rename tool - amending the original filename to differentiate
     e. set a NEW save location to isolate the files
     f. set the format / type / bitrate (best to keep the original format or a higher quality); when finished, click OK
     g. in the lower right corner, click the RUN button and watch the magic right before your eyes
[HERE IS THE CHEAT]
Now that you're learned the magic of batch processing (FYI a new favorite can contain / execute multiple existing effect processes), here is what I recently did in a doc with interview footage - guys in front of a green screen with a less than perfect sound environment.
1) in Multitrack mode, double-click your clip to process
2) in Waveform mode, select the noisefloor area to sample and type shift-P
3) type ctrl-shift-P to open the UI - adjust your De-noise settings for ALL of your processing
4) type ctrl-A to select the entire file
5) click Apply; type ctrl-shift-S to save this processed file (I add "_PROC") as an alternate to the original which still exists should you want to go back to it easily - the ALT file will be in the multitrack timeline
6) type G (de-select I/O area) then type F12 key - returns to Multitrack mode
7) double-click your next clip to process and repeat steps 3-7 until finished (you won't need to tweak the settings in 3 after the initial step 3)
In 3-5 minutes, you're Done!
I discovered another layer of coolness within Audition regarding CLIP Effects Racks where one can setup a stack of effects, save as a User Preset, and apply them to either an individual clip, a set of clips, or to a track. This is great when you want to apply, for example, a Parametric EQ for filtering an outdoor location or boosting a lav mic's High Freq. Shelf for addition sibilance PLUS a Tube-modeled Compressor to handle dynamics...you spend a lot of time tweaking the settings "just right", and now you want to apply to more than one clip on a track.
In a short film I'm working on, I use this technique to apply EQ and Room Ambiance (reverb) to camera perspective changes on a single track of ADR for off-camera Dx. I place the Dx in a track. Splice on the camera edits to make unique clips, select the Audio Perspective preset I made for each camera angle, and Voila!

Can I apply a transition across two clips in different video tracks?

In reading the manual, I see that I can butt two video clips up against each other in a single video track, overlap them and apply a transition.
However, I'm accustomed to (in audio editing software) making transitions across two clips that are in two separate video tracks.
I would like to be able to fade in and out, back and forth across two video tracks. Is that possible?
Please direct me to resources already documented and I will go read further. Maybe there are online resources, other posts, etc.

Most transitions will work if the clip is overlapped on another track. Just apply the transition to the edit point. Some, like the 3D simulation transitions, will not work properly like this.
It would really be better if you learned how to use this application the way it was designed to be used rather than the way you used some other application.

How to "hold" a title across several seconds of video?

Hi -- I'm using Imovie '08 (ver. 7.1.4) on my MacBook pro. And I'm having a problem with titles. I'd be grateful for any insights.
1a) I was able to edit a short video (30 seconds) that I made, but am
unable to have a title (1/3 down the page) that "stays" on each frame for the last 5 seconds. The title only appears as a quick blip and then disappears.
I can't see anyway in Imovie to keep the title across each frame.
1b) Perhaps if I were able to replicate a still with the title (since it's going to be the last thing in the video) for 5 seconds, that would also be useful. I want to take the last image of a section of video of imovie and extend it. Can this be done? If so, how?

Just to experiment, I tried inserting a title card with the text I wanted at the end of the short video.
Therein, I experienced the same problem I originally had: which is the title on the title card would "fade out" so the screen text would "dissolve" just as the title I added earlier would dissolve at the end.
See, what I'd like to do is leave the view with a screen that has a website and other textual info. But it seems to disappear no matter what I tried to do.
I was able, however, to get the title to appear across the clip by manipulating the bar as you suggested. It's just that last split second that I can't get.
