How to compress large files

Can anyone tell me whether os x has any good built in compression utilities? Or where to download some free ones?? I've got some rather large DV project folders that i want to compress onto one DVD and then delete them off my hard drive.
Also how do you compress file to .mpkg? That's the extension of a compressed file from an apple utility that i found. once it was opened turned out to be 1.8 gig from 456k.

OSX can create a .zip archive.
Select the folder in the Finder, and goto the File menu and select Create Archive.
But I'm not sure how high compression rate you can gain for your DV project.

    Hi guys,
    Does anybody know how to upload large file (>100 MB) use applet to servlet with http via post method? Thanks in advance.

    Hi SuckRatE
    Thanks for your reply. Could you give me some client side code to upload a large file. I use URL to connect to server. It throws out of memory exception. The part of client code is below:
    // connect to the servlet
    URL theServlet = new URL(servletLocation);
    URLConnection servletConnection = theServlet.openConnection();
    // inform the connection that we will send output and accept input
    servletConnection.setDoInput(true);
    servletConnection.setDoOutput(true);
    // Don't used a cached version of URL connection.
    servletConnection.setUseCaches (false);
    servletConnection.setDefaultUseCaches(false);
    // Specify the content type that we will send text data
    servletConnection.setRequestProperty("Content-Type",
    +"application/octet-stream");
    // send the user string to the servlet.
    OutputStream outStream = servletConnection.getOutputStream();
    FileInputStream filein = new FileInputStream(largeFile);
    //BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader
    +(servletConnection.getInputStream()));
    //System.out.println("tempCurrent = "+in.readLine());
    byte abyte[] = new byte[2048];
    int cnt = 0;
    while((cnt = filein.read(abyte)) > 0)
    outStream.write(abyte, 0, cnt);
    filein.close();
    outStream.flush();
    outStream.close();

    How to transfer large files(1GB) to pc

    Or possibly alternatively, and if really desperate, upload it to file distribution service like Fileserve or Rapidshare and then download it from the other machine (and then delete the upload).  Many of these services have a free mode although they may have size limitations and they certainly throttle the download speed down (Rapidshare may be one of the worse, Fileserve one of the best).  Personally I never tried something the size of 3GB.  What I do see is that stuff that large is generally broken up into multiple files to get around the size limitations and to be glued together when all the parts are downloaded.
    Just throwing this "out there" as an alternative but as I said, you probably would need to really be desparate to go this route

    Hi,
    After Converting list to Pdf try the below code.
    DATA :  GD_BUFFER TYPE STRING.
      LOOP AT IT_PDF_OUTPUT.
        TRANSLATE IT_PDF_OUTPUT USING ' ~'.
        CONCATENATE GD_BUFFER IT_PDF_OUTPUT INTO GD_BUFFER.
      ENDLOOP.
      TRANSLATE GD_BUFFER USING '~ '.
      DO.
        IT_MESS_ATT = GD_BUFFER.
        APPEND IT_MESS_ATT.
        SHIFT GD_BUFFER LEFT BY 255 PLACES.
        IF GD_BUFFER IS INITIAL.
          EXIT.
        ENDIF.
      ENDDO.
    Then mail it. <removed by moderator>

  • Compressor won't compress large files from QT X Screen cap

    all of my large screen capture files give a "Quicktime error: -36" when I try to transcode them in Compressor. Small ones work fine. Trimming one large file into two smaller ones makes no difference; the second of the two still fails. Ideas please..?

    Need more info:
    What compression settings are you using?
    File size of original file?
    Hard drive space remaining?
    How much ram?
    How many cores?
    etc
    Pretty much every little detail.

  • How to compress PDF files

    I have a 72MB PDF file that I want to email. How do I compress this file.

    A curious observation confounded me. I was using OS X to create PDF files from the Print dialog box of  an application, and I found the file size that OS X was creating to be rather large. I used Adobe Acrobat Pro to reduce the file size by using the product's capability to do so. A rather time consuming task, but necessary since the original file sizes were too large to email.
    Completely by accident one day i used Preview within OS X to view a newly created file (4.9 Mb in size), and then "saved" the file to disk. For some reason in doing so, Preview had automatically reduced the file size from 4.9 Mb to less than 200 Kb (coincidentally the same size reduction that Acrobat Pro was doing manually).
    I don't know why, but simply opening in Preview and then saving the file was initiating a massive reduction. To this day, I find that the two step proces of creating a PDF, then doing the Preview reduction is necessary to make the files smaller for email.

  • How to Expire Large Files using File Server Resource Manager

    Is there a way to expire Large Files over 2GB that have not been accessed in 2 years.
    I see under the File expiration options that I can expire files that have not been Created, Modified, or Accessed for a certain amount of time.
    Thanks,
    Eddie

    Hi Eddie,
    FSRM can help report large files and also can help move old files to a folder, but I did not found a way to combine them in a single process.
    Instead how about using Robocopy?
    You can run robocopy /min:xxx /minlad:xxx <source> <target>.
    /MIN:n :: MINimum file size - exclude files smaller than n bytes.
    /MINLAD:n :: MINimum Last Access Date - exclude files used since n.
    (If n < 1900 then n = n days, else n = YYYYMMDD date).

  • How to compress my files and folders, How to compress my files and folders

    Good morning,
    My name is Jai Bhandari and I am from London, UK.
    I am sending this out to everyone that can help me to compress my files and folders, as I believe my macbook pro is starting to freeze and caused by having a slow machine, is there anyone that can suggest to me how and what do I use to compress these files into one folder.
    Thank you for reading this and hope to hear from you soon.
    Many regards
    Jai

    You can 'compress' files and folders from the Finder by selecting the items and choosing File>Compress "selected file or folder". This will create a zip archive and will save you some space. (I just tried it on a 16GB folder and it compressed it to an 11GB zip file). After you zip the file/folder the original can be deleted )until you need to access it again, then you can just double-click the zip file).
    If you're trying to free up disk space on your hard drive, this is not the best method... but you didn't ask about that...

  • Need your suggestions - how to display large file in ASCII and HEX

    Hello,
    I want to create an application which can read in a large file and switch between displaying ASCII and HEX (formatted a particular way). There are two problems here that I'm not quite sure how to solve.
    1. How to switch dynamically between ASCII and HEX. Should the HEX formatter be in the document of the JTextArea(or equivalent), or somewhere in the view? If it's in the view then where? I'd rather not read in the file more than once.
    2. How to do some kind of paging scheme for huge files. I'd like to read in part of the file and display it, then when the user scrolls to another area, read in that part of the file.
    Thanks!

  • Compressing large file into several small files

    what can i use to compress a 5gb file in several smaller files, and that will easy rejoined at a later date?
    thanks

    Hi, Simon.
    Actually, what it sounds like you want to do is take a large file and break it up into several compressed files that can later be rejoined.
    Two ideas for you:
    1. Put a copy of the file in a folder of its own, then create a disk image of that folder. You can then create a segmented disk image using the segment verb of the hditutil command in Terminal. Disk Utility provides a graphical user interface (GUI) to some of the functions in hdiutil, but unfortunately not the segment verb, so you have to use hditutil in Terminal to segment a disk image.
    2. If you have StuffIt Deluxe, you can create a segmented archive. This takes one large StuffIt archive and breaks it into smaller segments of a size you define.2.1. You first make a StuffIt archive of the large file, then use StuffIt's Segment function to break this into segments.
    2.2. Copying all the segments back to your hard drive and Unstuffing the first segment (which is readily identifiable) will unpack all the segments and recreate the original, large file.I'm not sure if StufIt Standard Edition supports creating segmented archives, but I know StuffIt Deluxe does as I have that product.
    Good luck!

  • How to compress my file

    Hi,
    I am working on a wedding video that I shot with two cameras. I have edited it down and the final project was about 2 hours and 10 minutes. I used compressor and converted it to a mpeg2 which reduced the file to 1.9 gigs. However, I have come to discover that IDVD does not accept that file type.
    Next I re compressed it into a .mov, but that only reduced it to 10 gigs - which won't fit on a standard size dvd...
    I re-edited the film to 1 hour and 30 minutes, but still the file size is just over 7 gigs as a .mov.
    Does anyone have any suggestions on how to compress it without having to whittle it down to under an hour?
    Thanks for your help.

    When I initially finished the project, I exported as a Quicktime movie and it was 49+ gigs! (Yikes!)
    Still learning the Final Cut Suite and opened up Compressor for the first time realizing that it was the tool I needed. I compressed it down to 1.91 gigs, but did so as a .mpg - which I learned was not compatible with either iDVD or Studio Pro.
    That's when I scrolled down the list of "settings" and realized I could make it a .mov, which only got it down to 10 gigs. Which is where I was when I posted for help.
    I think I finally got it now, thank you so much for the help and advice...

    Hi ALL,
    As the titel says, AVI file size is now 36Mb.
    How to compress the AVI file so that I can sent it by Mail.

    The only way is to reduce the length or the size or the quality with a video editor. Probably all three. Usually, video files are too big for email. You should find a different method of transferring it.

  • Along the lines of How To Lead Large Files

    I have some mainframe extract files loaded onto a Solaris drive that are between 1 and 4 GB to be used in an initial load of a data warehouse. I can't even open a file with file sizes that large. (We're running JDK 1.2.2 - not sure if that matters.) I'm using this statement -
    bufReader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(new FileInputStream(fileName)));
    This is the error I get on that statement -
    java.io.FileNotFoundException: /wrhs_data/export.13.aug02 (Value too larg)
    at java.io.FileInputStream.open(Native Method)
    at java.io.FileInputStream.<init>(FileInputStream.java:68)
    at com.cofinity.importer.MyFileReader.open(MyFileReader.java:40)
    at com.cofinity.importer.MyFileReader.main(Compiled Code)
    The statement works fine on files less than 220 MB. It breaks somewhere between 220 and 804 MB.
    From the error message it seems that the underlying Native call can't handle opening such a large file. I've searched for the "value to larg" sub-message and found nothing. I tried eliminating the BufferedReader and just using the InputStreamReader, but I received the same error.
    Does anyone know how Java can read large files in the 1 to 4 GB range? (I suppose I could use something like Informatica to split the files up, but our disk space is at a premium.) Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Steve

    Well it appears to fail in open(). I tried your code on a binary file of size 25739135241 bytes (23.9+ gibibytes) on AIX and it did just fine, so it may be something in the runtime, try upgrading to a newer JDK/SDK, failing that, use the OS to stream in your data:
    BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(
            new InputStreamReader(System.in)
    );And just pipe/redirect your file to your Java processes' standard in.
