How to configure Grub or enable dual boot Windows7 & Oracle Enterprise Linux6

Hi,
I had Windows 7 installed on my PC and later on I have installed Oracle Linux6 (Server).
While installation I didn't get any option to configure dual boot and now I am unable to boot Windows7.
If I do fsdik -l command on Linux prompt, I get the result:
# fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 1600041885696 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum.optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x9143f05b
Device           Boot     Start     End     Blocks          Id     System
/dev/sda1       *          1          1305    10482381     83     Linux
/dev/sda2                  1306     6405    40960000      7       HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda3                  6405     12779  51200000      7       HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda4                  12779    19458 53646336      7       HPFS/NTFS
I check the grub config file at /boot/grub/menu.lst but I do not see any entry for windows here.
Please advise how to configure grub or other way to make the dual boot options enable and use windows and linux.
Thanks in Advance.
Anand

Could you post your menu.lst file?
It's not clear which exact partition Windows 7 is on from fdisk -l, but you could try adding this to your menu.lst file:
title Microsoft Windows 7
root (hd0,1)
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader +1

  • Dual Boot Windows7 and OSX on an HP 2140

I thought this was a great blog from networkjew.com about creating a Dual Boot Windows7 and OSX on an HP 2140.
Now that you’ve got your sleek little HP 2140 netbook, its time to blow away Windows XP and put something a bit snazzier on there.  I’ve toyed with OSX86 previously, and knew that most of the netbooks out there support it in one way or another, and many of them quite well. I had also read that Windows 7 played very nicely on these tiny computers, and it’s free for a few months, so why not?
Here’s how I made it work – there may be better ways, but this worked for me, mostly:
HP Product Expert for the Officejet Pro X Series.
Was your question answered? Mark it as an Accepted Solution!
See a great post? Give it a Kudos!

Windows 7 runs great on the 2140. I actually haven't had a chance to test all hardware functionality, but its nice and snappy; and as far as I can tell, all the hardware was recognized right out of the box. I loaded several of the Vista drivers/software from the HP support website and a few of them failed, but many installed just fine. I forgot to note which ones, unfortunately.
    Great netbook.

  • How to re-enable Beats speakers and sub woofer after configured Windows 8/Ubuntu dual boot?

    HP ENvy DV7-7240us
Windows 8 / Linux Ubuntu Dual Boot
No Sound through two front Beats speakers or sub woofer both operating systems after installed Ubuntu 12.10 as dual boot.
Is there a way to at least re-enable the Beats speakers and sub woofer in Windows 8 when I boot on that OS?  I am using the UEFI as the boot manager by hitting ESC / F9,  and not GRUB2 (Linux).
I did update to "BIOS" (UEFI) F.22 concurrently with the dual boot...possibly this has something to do with it?
I would like to keep the dual boot,  but the loss of the Beats speakers is kind of a deal breaker,  and virtualization of Linux seems to be buggy in its own right.
I tried re-enabling the sound through right clicking on the speaker icon in the tray, and configuring Playback devices.  The  only option available is IDT High Definition Audio Codec.  Is there another device listing for the Beats speakers that I am missing?
Only other minor issue with the hardware I am aware of is only on the Linux side, that being no pinch to zoom on track pad, which I try not to use anyway.
    Thank you.

Have you tried resetting BIOS settings to default? Enter BIOS by tapping/holding F10 key immediately after powering on.Reset to Default settings, usually tap F9,check bottom of screen for correct key.Save & Exit.

  • Inconsistent grub error 17, dual booting issues

    Hello,
I've recently installed Arch as a second OS on my computer, but I'm having a bit of trouble when it comes to booting it. I'm a bit new to Linux in general, but I've tried to research the problem, and seem to have run into a wall. Any comments, insight, suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Preemptive apologies for being windy, I'm trying to give as much relevant info as possible here
    ****************Here are the details:******************
-1st hard drive (sda): Windows 7
    -2nd hard drive (sdb): Arch
    Partitioning scheme:
    sdb1 = boot, about 100Mb, ext2
    sdb2 = swap, ~2gig
    sdb3 = root, ~20gig, ext3
sdb4 = home, the rest (HD is 500gb total), ext3
-grub is installed on the MBR of sdb
-windows has no problems booting independently (when i disconnect my second hard drive), so sda hasn't been touched at all
    in grub's menu.lst:
arch has root set to (hd1,0)
windows 7 has rootnoverify set to (hd0,0), with chainloader +1 after.
    **************The issue:********************
when choosing to boot arch from grub, (this is booting off of the second hard drive), i get an error 17, saying the filesystem is unrecognized and the partition type is 0x7.
if i then enter into the command line mode for grub, and try
    find /grub/stage1
it spits out (hd0,0), which is incorrect. it should be (hd1,0) since my boot partition is the first partition on the second hard drive, and (hd0,0) is an entirely different hard drive with nothing but windows on it.
    An interesting complication:
If I boot the USB iso image of arch I used to originally install it, and I highlight the option "boot existing OS", press tab to change hd0 0 to hd1 0, it loads up Grub, and from there on Grub boots perfectly fine to Arch - implying that at the very least Arch installed on the hard drive properly. Also, Grub run in this fashion seems to realize that (hd1,0) is ext2.
After booting arch as in the previous paragraph^ (note, this is arch as installed on the hard drive, not the liveCD version), i run:
    grub
    grub> find /grub/stage1
and it replies that stage1 is in hd(1,0), which is where it should be.
Googling suggests my partitions are somehow messed up, but I'm not completely sure of that. Booting from the USB image and running
    fdisk -l
seems to give the right partition order and sizes.
However, there could be a problem stemming from how I partitioned the second hard drive in the first place: it's an Advanced Format drive, and using Western Digital's guidelines - http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5655 - i ran:
    parted -a optimal /dev/sdb
and created my partitions, then used the Arch installer to establish their file systems and do the rest.
I don't have any concrete ideas about what's going on, except that Grub is somehow having trouble mounting/recognizing the file system when I try to run it from the MBR directly.
Once again, sorry for such a long post, and any help at all is greatly appreciated.

Ok, so I've tried to reconfigure my grub/menu.lst as described in https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pe … t_managers .
When I try to boot after that, it claims that the device /dev/disk/by-uuid/*the uuid i got for my boot partition* cannot be found.
This next paragraph might be a bit of a facepalm moment; in retrospect, it seems like it should be obvious that this would happen (like lifeafter2am is saying, my drives are getting switched at boot up):
After booting up grub in a bunch of different configurations, I've managed to determine that what my computer does is this:
    - In the bios, I changed the boot order to be USB -> 2nd hard drive (the one with arch on it) -> first hard drive (since I use a USB for a liveCD, and the 2nd hard drive's MBR has grub on it, which i want to use to dual boot both arch and windows, windows being on the first hard drive).
So every time I insert the usb, it changes what grub perceives to be hd0 and hd1. When I insert the usb, the usb becomes hd0, and the other drives are renumbered. When I try to boot without the USB, having the BIOS boot from my second hard drive makes the second hard drive become hd0.
What with ^ going on, I simply went in to the grub/menu.lst and changed arch's (hd1,0) to (hd0,0), and now it recognizes that (hd0,0) is indeed an ext2 fs, partition type 0x83, etc.
The problem now is: no matter what I try to set the root in menu.lst to be, whether it's sdb1, sda1, some uuid label, grub starts booting and then says error: unable to mount the real root device, and dumps me into a shell with a good luck message.
Is there a way to figure out what i should set grub's root in menu.lst to be, from the arch iso on my USB, keeping in mind the fact that inserting the USB renumbers the hard drives?
I don't wanna make the analogy to quantum mechanics, but this almost seems like an observer disturbing the results type of thing >_<

  • How do i set up a dual boot with windows

I am trying to set up a dual boot system with both the snow leapard and win 7,  I have partioned the drive and have windows booting up.  How do I get the drivers for the machine that windows will recognize.  I am researching this for my dad his I mac is one of the new 21 inch models.

If you want dual boot you would use Boot Camp which is built into Snow Leopard. You will need a license of WIndows 7. You can install it by using Boot Camp Assistant however prior to doing so you probably should look at how it's correctly done, here is a You Tube Boot Camp instructions video I would recommend you watch first.
If your dad wants to run Windows 7 & OS X simultaneously then he will need either Parallels or VMWare Fusion. Both are virtualization applications that allow one to run Windows and OS X side by side. This is a great solution unless he is a gamer or needs to run graphics intensive applications like CAD/CAM or 3D Games or anything that is 3D intensive. For all other types of applications virtualization is an excellent solution.
If you choose the Boot Camp solution there is a forum specifically for that which is where I'd recommend posting questions.

  • Help - How to install Win XP in dual boot with Win 7 (first installed)?

    Hi everybody!
I'm having some difficult in install a win xp in dual boot with win 7 (which came with the G550 notebook).
I modified the D: (Lenovo) partition to a primary partition to install the XP.  Also I installed the EasyBCD to manange the boots and both S.O. load fine.
The problem is that Win XP is seeing a partition (the first partition on disk) with 200MB that is hidden for Win 7 !   So this partition takes the C: letter in XP and mess all the configuration once that many programs uses the C: as a default letter.
The disk is divided in (aprox):
200 MB hidden partition (from factory)
    160GB with Win 7 installed
    40GB with Win XP installed
19GB hidden partition (Recovery - from factory)
Is anyone has some idea who to solve this problem or make install XP from the beginning without problems?
    Thank a lot!

At the left of it is your Win 8.1 partition. Yes ?
If yes, right click at Win 8.1 partition > click Extend Volume > click Next > at Select the amount of space in MB, type in the maximum available space shown for the unallocated space in MB > Next >  Finish

How to create an OS X Lion installation disc
OS X Lion Install to Different Drive
Your system (OS) selection of where has to be done BEFORE any restart.
And you want to backup and retain a copy of the installer ".ESD" package first.
On restart it will self destruct the package.
A clean install on another drive or another partition.
I prefer to go with pulling the old drive.
Always retain backup boot ability and dual drive dual boot is just... safer.
If you're looking for an OSX installation disc, and, like me, you upgraded to Lion through the app store, you will have to go through a back-door process in order to create this disc. Here's an article on this. http://www.macworld.com/article/161069/2011/07/make_a_bootable_lion_installer.ht ml (I can't guarantee it works. I made a disc like this because I thought I needed it to reload from a Time Machine backup, but it turns out that Lion doesn't require the disc for this, so I never used it.)
When I installed Boot Camp and Windows, I didn't need the OSX installation disc. I'm not sure why you would, in this process. It should only ask for your Windows disc.
If for some reason you downloaded Windows from Microsoft instead of buying a package with a disc, you need to download the ISO version and burn it to a DVD. See this article on downloading the ISO: http://www.mydigitallife.info/windows-7-iso-x86-and-x64-official-direct-download -links-ultimate-professional-and-home-premium/ (Make sure you choose the ISO that matches the version you bought).
Here's instructions on burning an ISO with Disk Utility: http://lifehacker.com/251758/mac-tip--how-to-burn-an-iso-or-dmg-file-to-disc And this thread on burning a Windows DVD in OSX: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2039118?start=0&tstart=0 (Summary: you can use Disk Utility to burn the ISO, but choose a slow burn speed)

I know GParted .... it had f****d my entire drive earlier. I only trust my paid Acronis Disk Director, but it dosnt handle my ext4 correctly, so it is no option for moving my Arch partition.
Grub2 is on my System the Bootloader, so i know there must be sometething been edited in the grub.cfg after partitioning for proper boot.
When i delete the Win7 Partitons under Windows and move the Arch in front, are the SD*-Numbers in Arch changing??
So, when i delete tbothz win7 partitions Grub2 shouls still be working as ive installed into MBR. I think then i only have to change the sda1... for a succesful boot?
Dumb thing ia: Win7 are primary partitions (both), then all others come in a big logical one.
Best advice I can give you: BACKUP your entire Arch64 partition to another drive.  Do the same w/ your data partition.  Nuke the ENTIRE notebook HDD, repartition it to your liking and copy back.  DON'T mess with expanding/shrinking partitions.
Having no Backup possibility due to the 2.5'' hdd in the notebook!
