How to: Connect a new MacMini to an iMac (internet)..

I have an iMac in one room and a MacMini in the next room. The iMac is already connected to the internet.
I want to connect the MacMini to the internet using an Apple Airport Express Base Station router. The connection from the MacMini will be WIRELESS. My iMac is WIRED to the internet...the imac has "Airport"...
I am hoping that the Apple Express router will be just "plug and play", but I know that life is more complicated than that, but I hope for the best. I understand that in purchasing the Apple Express base station that there's a 90 day telephone support which is inspiring!...
In the meanwhile, I sure could use some info as to how to set the Apple Express base router up to wirelessly get the macmini connected to the internet.
Grazia tutti.....

You do not need an Airport Express to connect your Mac mini to the internet. While your iMac is connected to the internet with an ethernet connection, you should be able to turn on the Airport card in the iMac and set up a local wifi network that your Mac mini can use to share your iMac's internet connection.
You would need to create an AirPort network in System Prefs>Network. If AirPort does not exist in the left hand pane click the + below and create one. Check the box to Show AirPort status in menu bar.
After you have created the AirPort network go to System Prefs>Sharing and highlight Internet Sharing. (Do not check the box.) Then to the right choose to Share your connection from Ethernet from the pulldown menu. Below share To computers using AirPort by checking the box for AirPort. Use the AirPort Options... button to name the network and setup wireless encryption. Click OK. Lastly, go back and check the box for Internet Sharing.
Then go to your Mac mini and configure it for a wireless network. Go to System Prefs>Network and enable an AirPort Network and turn on the AirPort card. Click the box to show Airport status in the menubar. From the menubar you should see the network that you set up on your iMac. Choose this network and in the dialog box fill in the information to connect to your network. You should now have internet access.

  • How to connect a Sony Bravia TV to the internet through your Airport network

Since it took me a lot of time to figure out how to connect my Sony Bravia TV to the internet through my Airport network, I better share how to do it. Hopefully saving others a lot of time.
My 32EX600 Sony Bravia TV is Ethernet connected to my Mac Mini, which is part of my Airport network, together with another Mac, an Airport Extreme Base Station and an ADSL modem/router. Moreover, the Mac Mini is connected to the TV by HDMI.
Whatever I tried in the TV’s Wired Network Set-up (Auto, or Manual with manual IP, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway and DNS IPs), I couldn’t get it right. Cable Connection and Local Access were mostly OK, Internet Access always Failed.
The solution lies in the Sharing panel of the System Preferences of the Mac Mini. In the Internet Sharing item of that panel, you should choose to “share your internet connection from WiFi to computers (the TV in this case) using Ethernet“, and NOT (as I had chosen before and seemed so obvious) “share your internet connection from Airport to computers using Ethernet“. After that change, the Bravia Network Set-up, using the Wired and Auto options, flawlessly connected to the internet. No expensive (Sony) WiFi USB dongle needed.

I have now had a detailed reply from Sony Europe and the way to do this is to:
    1.       Press Home on the TV Setup
    2.       Use the right and left arrow to select Setting.
    3.       Use the up and down to select Network, press Enter.
    4.       Select Network Setup.
    5.       Select Wireless setup.
    6.       Select Scan
    7.       Select your network
    8.       A new screen will appear asking for entering the security key.
    9.       Enter your WPA2 key.
    10.   Select Enter.
    11.   It will take you back to the same screen asking for entering the
    security key.
    12.   Press the right arrow.
    13.   Select Auto.
    14.   Press the right arrow.
    15.   Select Save and connect.
These instructions are not the same as shown on the TV but they worked fine for me so they may help others with a similar problem.

  • How to reformat the new MacMini Fusion Drive . . .

BACKGROUND:  I am a long time Mac user.  Periodically I reformat the HD on my iMac and reinstall Mac OS X and application software.  This is time consuming but I am retired and have plenty of time to do this.  NOW:  I am planning on purchasing a new MacMini with the 1 TB Fusion Drive.  The drive has 128 GB of flash storage.  I will have an external HD connected to the MacMini.  The external HD will have a bootable partition where Mac OS X Mountain Lion will be installed so I will be able to reformat the 1TB Fusion Drive on the MacMini when I want to do so.
QUESTION:  How do I reformat the 1 TB Fusion Drive on the just released new MacMini with 128 GB of flash storage?  When I use the Disk Utility will it display the 128 GB flash storage as one partition, and the remainder of the 1 TB HD as the second partition?  What are the steps for reformatting the 128 GB of flash storage and the remainder of the 1 TB HD and then installing Mac OS X Mountain Lion on the 128 GB flash storage?
Please - no responses about why in the world would I want to reformat the fusion drive.  This something I simply want to periodically do.
Thank you in advance for your suggestions . . .
    Jim

Here is an article to read on making a fusion drive.
    http://blog.macsales.com/15617-creating-your-own-fusion-drive
There are a ton of them on the web now.  If you haven't reformatted your HD, don't.  Just follow the instructions and fuse the SSD to the HD partition, format it, then restore from your backup.
Keep this in mind, the recovery partition is normally on the HD and not the SSD.  If you wipe the entire HD during your fuse, you will lose it.

How can I connect my new MacBook Air to a LaCie hard disk with TIme Capsule backup from my old Imac? LaCie has USB 2.0, FireWire and eSata ports.

You can direct connect your MBA to the LaCie via USB 2 cable.  If you have an Apple Airport Router you can USB connect the LaCie drive to the router and then use Airport Utility to configure it.  Time Machine can access it either way.

  • How to connect a new 27" LED Cinema Display to an older Mac Mini?

I bought a 27" LED Cinema Display (no Thunderbolt) but don't know how to connect it to my wife's older Mac Mini. I presume the Atlona adaptor is the solution, but I haven't bougt one yet.

The cord attached to the display splits into a Mini DisplayPort, USB, and a MagSafe connector (for powering a laptop).
There is a separate connector on the back of the display for the AC power cord.

  • I18n JSTL / How to connect to new JAR holding new properties file?

    Hi there
This is concering i18n and how (on earth;) JSTL knows where to find the according properties files that hold all the textual information.
Okay. I have a piece of software that works fine and has the i18n mechanism running very nicely.
I found the properties files in WEB-INF/lib/i18n.jar in a folder 'resources/bundle/'. They all prefix 'i18n' so JSTL makes use of them like this:
         <fmt:bundle basename="resources/bundles/i18n">
              <fmt:message var="thumbnailText" key="thumbnail.label" />
So, we work on a new project right now based on this software. How can I add new project-related properties files?
    What I did:
    1) I created a new properties files having new textual information on new labels, etc.
    2) Put this in a folder of the new project JAR, which is in WEB-INF/lib now.
    3) Referenced the basename of fm:bundle according to this folder (including correct file prefix).
    -> Doesn't work.
Is it that by convention all i18n information will be searched for in a JAR that must be named 'i18n.jar'?
    I'd greatly appreciate any hints
    Cheers
    André

First, a sidenote to the SUN team: Before beeing able to reply, the forum denied me access unless I comitted to a screen name. Using my 'AndreKuhn' screen name got me 'Already in use'. Yes, of course. By me! So I had to pick AndreKuhn2 which is a little annoying. There seems to be something wrong with your system.
    Okay, back to the issue.
Thanks evnafets for your notions! I have 2 JARs having i18n information. One had already been in use (successfully) by the underlying system. It's the one mentioned above ('i18n.jar'). Now there is a second one. Actually used the same way (technically) with different folders and namings. It goes like this:
    <fmt:bundle basename="resources/i18n/bdficp">
              <fmt:message var="titleText" key="publishLink.config.title" />
With additional i18n information in 'WEB-INF/lib/<PROJECT-NAME>.jar'. Precisely in a file 'resources\i18n\bdficp_de.properties' having the line:
    publishLink.config.title=Just\ another\ title.
Which should be the one referenced in the snippet above. Still the app gives me: ???publishLink.config.title???
Any clue? I'd greatly praise your name across the rooms here!
    Cheers
    André

  • How to connect to a hard drive on a internet box (afp ?)

    hello everyone
I have a problem since I am on Lion with my internet box. I pluged a hard drive on it. On my others computers (on Windows, icluding my mac with bootcamp)
The Lion is unable to connect the HD. I can see it on my finder (but not everytime), but it can't connect with it.
I thaught I found the solution here (in french):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4700?viewlocale=fr_FR
    But it didn't work!
I think my probleme is a the step 3 where I have to make a AFP connection. What is it exactly?
    Is it the right solution?
    Thanks for help.

That would depend on how your internet box shares out the hard drive. If it doesn't support AFP, then using AFP to connect to it won't work at all. If it does support afp, then go to the Finder and select Connect to Server from the Go menu. For the address, use afp://ip.address.of.router.
You Also might want to check your router help files for how to connect to shared drives.
Apple had to drop Samba, the old SMB/CIFS implementation of Windows File sharing. They wrote their own implementation, but it might not be completely compatible with how your router is sharing out the hard drive.

  • How to connect my new Time Capsule and new Apple TV to my Airport Extreme?

Hello, I just moved into a new apartment with one DSL outlet for internet from the kitchen. I set up an Airport Extreme in the kitchen without a problem. But I don't know how to set up the TIme Capsule in my home office and the Apple TV in my living room? Can someone help me? Thank you very much!
    Ray

I would try to connect the Extreme and the TC by ethernet for a more reliable and faster network. The secondary router must be in bridge mode, use Airport Utility "manual" to set that up.
Once your network is tested by yourself and reliable then power up ATV and use the remote to go to setting. Assuming you have a main computer with your itunes library setup and launched without sleeping then go to ATV settings/computers and point to your computer which has your library. ATV should give you a 5 digit code. Enter this in your itunes column on lefthand side, its self explanatory assuming in itunes preferences you have checked under ATV "look for ATV."

  • How to connect to an other computer through the internet

Please who can help me with Desktop Remote control and connecting through the internet. I know a lot is written about it, but it is still confusing.
So try to explain my situation:
I have an MacBook pro with Desktop Remote Control 3
    The other computer:
Apple PowerBook which is connected through and Thomson Speedtouch (wireless 716)
    External IP address xx.xx.xx.xx
    Internal IP address 192.168.1.66
    No firewalls
    My questions:
How do I check if my Thomson Speedtouch the ports 5900 and 32?? are open?
How can I open the ports on the router? Do I have to open the port on the router?
Then on the MacBook Pro, I start up ARD3
How do I scan for the computer on Internet? Do I use the external IP address?
How can I then connect to the Apple PowerBook? I cannot fill in the second internal IP address or do I?
I hope someone can help me.
If more info is needed, please ask me.
    Thank you....
    Hans

Neil thank you for your answer.
I opened Network Utility. Went to the last Tab "Port Scan"
I typed in: external IP address (i got this through the Widget SysStat which shows external IP)
Than I gave up scan between the ports 5890 - 5910 to check if those ports are open or not. I had to way for a moment, and then the result was: "Port Scan has completed....."
Ok, what do I know know? The ports are open or not?
So please can someone help me with the following:
    1) What should the result show me from Network utility?
    2) Opening the port, this has to be done on the Router or is it something the Internet Service Provider needs to do?
    3) I still have the question: how can I open the port, so with what application.
    4) What are the exact ports which needs to be open?
    5) About bridging in the router, does that have a special name. I didn't see in the router configuration program an option like that? When searching --> this is configured: A. Router-modem (NAT/PAT) - is there something special with NAT/PAT?
Hope someone can help me with a few of my questions.
    Thanks

  • How to connect one Nano to 2 different iMacs on a network

I have 2 separate iMacs (up & downstairs) & want to put songs I've downloaded onto the downstairs iTunes onto my Nano -- which I "registered" with the upstairs iMac, (that's where I recharge/update my iPod from). But the downstairs iTunes has all the great songs! How can I get them onto my Nano, has anyone else encountered this problem? I can share the libraries, but can't seem to get the downstairs files onto my iPod, and can't plug in my Nano downstairs: get an error message telling me it can only be associated/updated from one computer.?

If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer or with more than one iTunes library you need to connect your iPod to your first computer and change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply.
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
    Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. You should then be able to change your settings: iTunes Keyboard Shortcuts for OSX
