How to Handle Connection Informatin in a Multi-User Environment

Hello,
I am trying to setup SQL Developer on a Terminal Services box where multiple users will have access to use this tool. However, I have noticed that conenction details are shown globally on a Terminal Services box to anyone who has access to use SQL Developer.
Is there a way to force these connection details to be stored in a user's Documents and Settings directory?
Thanks in advance...
Tom

After digging through the forum a bit, I have found that I can use the following switch in my shortcut to SQLDeveloper to achive this.
C:\oracle\sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper.exe -J-Dide.user.dir="%USERPROFILE%\.SQLdeveloper"
I tried to modify the SQLDeveloper.boot but that did not seem to work correctly. The above mentioned switch updates the "c:\documents and settings\%username%\.sqrdeveloper" with all password related information and SQL history that was important to meet our security requirements. We updated the shortcut in the AllUsers profile and this seems to work globally.
The only bad thing about this approach is that anyone can go into %AppData%\sqldeveloper.exe and run it without using the shortcuts. This would bypass the security precaution.
Is there a better way to approach this?
Regards,
Tom

    Hi. A JDBC connection pool is a set of identical, interchangeable, pre-made
    connections, and the controls to make sure only one user uses a particular
    connection at any one time. If you want to have different DBMS users, you can
    have a separate pool for each DBMS user, which may contain as many or few
    connections as you want. Some applications has a pool for the accounting
    applications, and another for the sales applications etc. Some do have a
    separate pool for john, jane, joe etc, each with one connection. Pools
    can be created and destroyed dynamically using the dynamic pool API.

    Dreamweaver had this capability many releases ago, but it has been dropped, so it's no longer available.

  • BC4J - Multi-User Environment

    Can someone explain, how to setup a BC4J project in a multi-user environment. In my case I want to create 50-100 Users in the database (I don't prefer creating a table and storing usernames and passwords in that table as in Auctions example). Do I need to create a connection.properties with 50-100 user connections? How does the connection pooling work in such a case. I am sure that someone might have went through this process. I need some input.
    Thank you in advance for your help.

  • UPK11 - multi-user environment - manage author permissions - help

    We are configuring our UPK 11 multi-user environment.
    As we have it set, the "everyone" group has modify access to all folders.
    I would like to have a few admins have modify access to the system folder and everyone else be read only.
    Here's my dilemma -
    My admin profile is also a part of the everyone group - so if I set the permissions on the everyone group to read only, that effects the admin login as well.
    The documentation says that if I set up an author with explicit folder permissions, that they are not included in the everyone group, but everytime I try, they are added (irrevocably) to the everyone group before I can even assign an explicit permission.
    I tried to set the everyone group to read only and nearly hobbled my admin account.
    Can someone who has managed authors in a UPK 11 multii-user environment send out some tips?
    I'm not understanding the documentation well enough to make headway.
    [email protected]

    Hi Paul,
    I recently performed an implementation of UPK 11 at a client and had to show one of their employees how to administer the security surrounding profiles and authors.
    The group "Everyone" is default, and each person will belong to that group. It seems that when a person is assigned to another group/with author-specific permissions, it will override that which is set to the "Everyone" group.
    What I normally suggest (and implement) is that you modularise your security (separate the authors into their respective departments), and then create those departments as groups, and then assign permissions as required. Lets use an example - it assumes you are logged in as an admin user:
    I create 3 folders (where 4 and 5 are defaults):
    1. HR
    2. FIN
    3. CS
    4. Administrators
    5. Everyone
    Each author is defaulted to number 5, and all administrators should be included in group 4.
    Now the goal is to prevent HR and FIN from modifying CS, and vice-versa for the other two groups.
    You will see in your library that the root is defined as "/". Firstly, ensure that the Administrators group has Modify access to this folder (Administration --> Manage Groups --> Permissions). I think you need to click on edit, then click on the "Add" button (under permissions), and choose the root folder "/" - ensure it has modify - by default this value should already exist. This now ensures that the security is filtered down to all sub-ordinate folders that exist under the root folder - you do not need to manually assign "modify" permissions to each folder for the Administrator group, as you have already done so at root level.
    You will also notice that there is a "Members/Users" tab (can't remember off the top of my head which), and this allows you to select the profiles/authors that have Administrator group priviledges - ensure the correct users are selected.
    I normally leave the "Everyone" group as it is - do this for now, ensure everyone is included in it, and only modify after you have implemented and tested your security structure if needs be - normally the other group permissions override the "Everyone" group permissions.
    Next step is to assign department specific permissions to the 3 folders we created. Navigate to Administration --> Manage Groups, and ensure that you begin by editing the first department group (HR) - create the group if not already done, then edit (little pencil logo). You would like all HR users to have full modify access to their folder only, but they must not be able to mess around with the other two departments or the "System", "Getting started with UPK" and "/" folders. Under permissions, click on the Add button, and ensure that the folder "HR" has modify priviledge. Add the remaining 4 folders (CS, FIN, System, Getting started with UPK), and assign either Read or Read/View permission - this will ensure all other folders cannot be modified by HR users. Add the relevant HR users to the group under the "Members/Users" tab.
    Apply the same for FIN and CS respectively.
    Now you could get to a point where you may need cross-departmental access for a few users (FIN may need to access some HR content). I recommed that you do this on the user level, and not the group level, as you will limit who can access other departments. Navigate to Administration --> Manage Authors. Click on the specific user that will require access to another department. Edit his profile and under the permissions tab, ensure that he has required access to the other department folder (or sub-folders only) by adding and assigning the priveledge. This should ovveride the group security set for that specific department - but only for this user!
    Test by attempting to create content in an un-authorised folder (when logged in as a normal user). Test admin account by creating content in each folder. If it works - you will no longer need to modify "Everyone", as your permissions are defined under the other groups. I hope this all makes sense?
    Thats it in a nutshell really.
    I hope that this helps, and feel free to get back to me if you are still unsure?

    Greig

  • Problem with mode switching/Volume Panel in multi-user environment?

    As above - using Windows 7 64-bit with an X-Fi Titanium Fatalty card.
    All works well as long as I'm the only person logged in, but if my wife logs into the computer (using Windows 7's built-in multi-user mode...'fast user switching', which is enabled by default), and then I log back in...well, the volume panel app doesn't seem to work. In fact, even using the control panel app, I can't regain control of the soundcard enough to switch modes.
    Logging her off doesn't resolve the issue, so it seems like something about her logging on (another user logging in, two volpanlu.exe running, something) is causing my instance to go haywire. [FWIW, I'm a 'standard' user on the PC, and her login is a 'limited' user]
    Note that 'killing' the task volpanlu.exe in task managed, then going to the Windows services control panel and stopping and re-starting the 'Windows Audio' service, and finally re-launching volpanlu.exe from the start menu DOES always work to resolve the problem (regardless of if she's logged in or not...this always fixes it).
    Still, that's a kinda annoyingly large set of steps to always have to go through whenever I want to change audio mode after she's logged in.
    Is there any way to fix this? Any setting I could be missing to optimize the X-Fi control panel for multi-user environments? Any of the X-Fi mod dri've packs handle fast user switching better? Any other ideas?

    GA little bit more tinkering around this, and I have some more information:
    - Once I "seize control" (the kill of volpanlu, restart 'Windows Audio' service, re-launch volpanlu), if my wife logs back in, now *she* can't change the audio mode

  • How to handle connection to db problems using toplink

    Hi,
    We need to handle loss of db connection in our application. We use glassfish and toplink essentials (0.22). I suspect that a java RuntimeException is thrown by toplink. This is the code we use to access the db (mysql). The MyServiceImpl class is where I have my EntityManager to access my persistence entities. Is this the place to catch the RuntimeException? How can I handle it. Is it a reconnect I shall add to the code?

  • How to handle Connection in a SLSB

    I am reading EJB in j2ee tutorial 1.4 and in the Bank example I saw that for each private method, first a connection is obtained then work is completed and then the connection is closed.
        private void updateChecking(double amount) throws SQLException {
            makeConnection();
            releaseConnection();
        private void updateSaving(double amount) throws SQLException {
            makeConnection();
            releaseConnection();
        public void transferToSaving(double amount)
            throws InsufficientBalanceException {
            checkingBalance -= amount;
            savingBalance += amount;
            try {
                updateChecking(checkingBalance);
                if (checkingBalance < 0.00) {
                    context.setRollbackOnly();
                    throw new InsufficientBalanceException();
                updateSaving(savingBalance);
            } catch (SQLException ex) {
                throw new EJBException("Transaction failed due to SQLException: " +
                    ex.getMessage());
        }Is this the recommended approach? I find it problemetic that one Logical Unit of Work "the transferToSaving() method" is opening and closing Connection twice.
    I am thinking that a better approach would be to get Connection in transferToSaving() method then pass Connection as an argument to both updateChecking() and updateSaving() methods.
        private void updateChecking(Connection conn, double amount) throws SQLException {
        private void updateSaving(Connection conn, double amount) throws SQLException {
        public void transferToSaving(double amount)
            throws InsufficientBalanceException {

            savingBalance += amount;
            try {
                makeConnection();
                updateChecking(checkingBalance);
                if (checkingBalance < 0.00) {
                    context.setRollbackOnly();
                    throw new InsufficientBalanceException();
                updateSaving(savingBalance);
            } catch (SQLException ex) {
                throw new EJBException("Transaction failed due to SQLException: " +
                    ex.getMessage());
            } finally {
            releaseConnection();
        }Am i right? If yes then how come the guys at Sun are recommending a wrong approach?
    Thanks

    What is your question really about? You seem to be
    going in circles.
    Ok. Here is my question refined:
    I am reading SLSB EJB in j2ee tutorial 1.4 and in the Bank example I saw that for each business private method, first a connection is obtained then work is completed and then the connection is closed. For example:
    public class BankBean implements SessionBean, SessionSynchronization {
        private Connection con;
        public void transferToSaving(double amount) throws InsufficientBalanceException {
            checkingBalance -= amount;
            savingBalance += amount;
            try {
                updateChecking(checkingBalance);
                if (checkingBalance < 0.00) {
                    context.setRollbackOnly();
                    throw new InsufficientBalanceException();
                updateSaving(savingBalance);
            } catch (SQLException ex) {
                throw new EJBException("Transaction failed due to SQLException: " +
                    ex.getMessage());
        private void updateChecking(double amount) throws SQLException {
            makeConnection();
            String updateStatement =
                "update checking set balance =  ? " + "where id = ?";
            PreparedStatement prepStmt = con.prepareStatement(updateStatement);
            prepStmt.setDouble(1, amount);
            prepStmt.setString(2, customerId);
            prepStmt.executeUpdate();
            prepStmt.close();
            releaseConnection();
        private void updateSaving(double amount) throws SQLException {
            makeConnection();
            String updateStatement =
                "update saving set balance =  ? " + "where id = ?";
            PreparedStatement prepStmt = con.prepareStatement(updateStatement);
            prepStmt.setDouble(1, amount);
            prepStmt.setString(2, customerId);
            prepStmt.executeUpdate();
            prepStmt.close();
            releaseConnection();
        private void makeConnection() {
            try {
                InitialContext ic = new InitialContext();
                DataSource ds = (DataSource) ic.lookup(dbName);
                con = ds.getConnection();
            } catch (Exception ex) {
                throw new EJBException("Unable to connect to database. " +
                    ex.getMessage());
        private void releaseConnection() {
            try {
                con.close();
            } catch (SQLException ex) {
                throw new EJBException("releaseConnection: " + ex.getMessage());
    }Is this the recommended approach? I find it problemetic that one Logical Unit of Work "the transferToSaving() method" is opening and closing Connection twice.
    I am thinking that a better approach would be to first get Connection in transferToSaving() method then call both updateChecking() and updateSaving() methods and then close Connection in transferToSaving() method.
    So I would make following changes in the above code:
    public void transferToSaving(double amount) throws InsufficientBalanceException {
            checkingBalance -= amount;
            savingBalance += amount;
            try {
                makeConnection();
                updateChecking(checkingBalance);
                if (checkingBalance < 0.00) {
                    context.setRollbackOnly();
                    throw new InsufficientBalanceException();
                updateSaving(savingBalance);
            } catch (SQLException ex) {
                throw new EJBException("Transaction failed due to SQLException: " +
                    ex.getMessage());
            } finally {
                releaseConnection();
        private void updateChecking(double amount) throws SQLException {
            String updateStatement =
                "update checking set balance =  ? " + "where id = ?";
            PreparedStatement prepStmt = con.prepareStatement(updateStatement);
            prepStmt.setDouble(1, amount);
            prepStmt.setString(2, customerId);
            prepStmt.executeUpdate();
            prepStmt.close();
        private void updateSaving(double amount) throws SQLException {
            String updateStatement =
                "update saving set balance =  ? " + "where id = ?";
            PreparedStatement prepStmt = con.prepareStatement(updateStatement);
            prepStmt.setDouble(1, amount);
            prepStmt.setString(2, customerId);
            prepStmt.executeUpdate();
            prepStmt.close();
        }Am i right? If yes then how come the guys at Sun are recommending a wrong approach?

  • How to configure connection to AD from a hosted environment

    Hi there,
    I am in the process of planning a migration from our current SP 2010 environment to SP 2013 that is being hosted outside of our network.
    I was hoping somebody could point me in the right direction of how I go about setting up a connection to our AD server inside our network to this SP environment that will be outside our network?
    Thanks

    Or you could talk to them about setting up ADFS. This won't require a forest trust (which hosting providers normally don't do). ADFS is based on certificates, and allows SharePoint to use credentials from your organizations AD. It will require work on
    their end as well as on your end. See this article for more information:

  • How to handle session-timeout in producer-consumer(wsrp) environment.

    Hi
    We are using weblogic portal 9.2 in federated environment (wsrp) .
    We have one consumer Ear and some producer Ear .
    we want if session is time out ,then user should direct to some default page .
    For that we are firing event in Base Exception handler where we caught all exceptions.
    that event is listen by consumer side ,(when session time out producer raise event).
    event is fired , every thing looks fine but we are not able to redirect page from producer to consumer (which should not be happen )
    I think we are doing something wrong .
    Any suggestion/ guidance will help us lot
    thanks in advance

    Hello,
    Probably the easiest way for you to get the behaviour you want would be to put a event handler on a .portlet file (on the consumer) that lives on the page you want to activate if the producer session has timed out. For example:
    <netuix:handleCustomEvent event="eventNameComingFromProducer" eventLabel="sessionTimeoutPageActivation">
    <netuix:activatePage/>
    </netuix:handleCustomEvent>
    When your producer portlet sends an event "eventNameComingFromProducer" the portlet on the page you want to activate will pick it up and automatically activate the page.

  • How to secure firewire drive data for multi user mac ?

    I have a couple of external firewire hard drives attached to my mac which contain all my work files.
    My 6 yr son has started using my mac so I have set him up his own account and set up the parental controls etc.
    BUT - is there any way I can set things up so the firewire drives dont appear to him or so he cant delete anything ?
    It seems fairly straightforward to protect files files on the main hard drive but these firewire drives mount every time a user logs on and he seems to have full access to them.
    Thanks in advance if you can help.

    Log in under your account, and highlight the drive on the Desktop. Click cmd-i to Get Info. Make sure that, under Ownership and Permissions, you do not have "Ignore Ownership on this Drive" ticked. Now, again using Get Info, make sure that all top-level folders are owned by you, and that other users do not have access. (You might want to reduce the number of top-level folders to make this easier.)
    Now log in as your son and make sure you don't have access to those folders.

    Currently we are not using OAS but a portal server and Apache
    Intermedia Web Agent and Clip Board are working fine.
    The questions are
    1. if there are multiple users (content managers) who would be adding /modifying content in the database, the how can I go about with Clip board.
    2.The requirement is these people should be able to search documents on the basis of keywords. So how do we integrate Intermedia query capabilities on this clip board interface.
    3. For production level how do we go about implementing.
    Should we continue to have the ctxsys user and use that itself.

    a) User 1 is looking at a af:selectOneChoice on a web (ADF Faces) page showing some data
    b) User 2 inserts a new row in the table (from different jsf page) whose data is shown on that af:selectOneChoice, and commits that new row
    I need I way for the User 1 to see newly inserted row as a choice in the af:selectOneChoice.
    So, here is relevant part of code:
                                <af:selectOneChoice value="#{bindings.LokacijaId.inputValue}"
                                                    label="#{bindings.LokacijaId.label}"
                                                    binding="#{tradingTicketBacking.selectOneChoice15}"
                                                    id="selectOneChoice15"
                                                    showRequired="true">
                                  <f:selectItems value="#{bindings.LokacijaId.items}"
                                                 binding="#{tradingTicketBacking.selectItems16}"
                                                 id="selectItems16"/>
                                </af:selectOneChoice>- and here is relevant part of pageDef :
        <list IterBinding="TeeTradingTicketVOIterator" Uses="LOV_LokacijaId"
              id="LokacijaId">
          <AttrNames>
            <Item Value="LokacijaId"/>
          </AttrNames>
        </list>So, how to refresh values in the af:selectOneChoice, in order to see changes made by another user ?
    I have the same question for data displayed in a af:table - how to make changes made by another user to be automatically visible for the first user ? What is the best way to achieve this ?
    I am using ADF BC, and when I say "automatically", I mean "after User 1 made form submit in any way (partial or not)"

    After user 1 submits the page, it might not even be committed, so there is no way to have the pending data from user1 seen by user2.
    However, we do have a new feature in ADF 11g TP4 that I plan to blog more about called Auto-Refresh view objects. This feature allows a view object instance in a shared application module to refresh its data when it receives the Oracle 11g database change notification that a row that would affect the results of the query has been changed.
    The minimum requirements in 11g TP4 to experiment with this feature which I just tested are the following:
    1. Must use Database 11g
    2. Database must have its COMPATIBLE parameter set to '11.0.0.0.0' at least
    3. Set the "AutoRefresh" property of the VO to true (on the Tuning panel)
    4. Add an instance of that VO to an application module (e.g. LOVModule)
    5. Configure that LOVModule as an application-level shared AM in the project properties
    6. Define an LOV based on a view accessor that references the shared AM's VO instance
    7. DBA must have performed a 'GRANT CHANGE NOTIFICATION TO YOURUSER'
    8. Build an ADF Form for the VO that defined the LOV above and run the web page
    9. In SQLPlus, go modify a row of the table on which the shared AM VO is based and commit
    When the Database delivers the change notification, the shared AM VO instance will requery itself.
    However that notification does not arrive all the way out to the web page, so you won't see the change until the next time you repaint the list.
    Perhaps there is some way to take it even farther with the active data feature PaKo mentions, but I'm not familiar enough with that myself to say whether it would work for you hear.

  • Cisco TSP in a Citrix/WTS Multi user environment ?

    Does someone know if it works with any version of the Call Manager.
    I just read something about the Cisco TSP- driver that can use any application that supports TAPI like Outlook and Navision do.
    But I didn?t find anything about the compatibility with citrix or wts...
    But when I think about I can imagine that it does not work because it's just one Outlook per server in multiple instances...hm.
    Maybe you know an alternative way to initiate calls from the desktop.
    thanks in advance
    EDIT: SORRY- saw there are already some posts relating this issue.

    I had tried this exact thing on a Citrix server. Problem was, there is only one logon instance for the TSP and it pulled up the same extension for all Citrix user on that server. After this, I did try it further. Hopefully you will have better luck than I.
