How do I 'Find & Replace' with control characters - paragraph, carriage return, tab

In Pages 4.3 (Pages '09) I could insert special characters into the Find & Replace fields. It was great. Excellent way to clean up & recover text from a pdf or html.
In Pages 5.2 that capability seems to be gone. When I turn on the special characters [Show Invisibles - shift-cmd-I], I can highlight said invisible, copy it, then paste it into the Find&Replace field. Nope. It goes in as a space, and the Find command only finds spaces. Not the invisible that I was looking for.
This was a major feature for me, folks. Much better than Word's approach. Now it is gone (I fear), and the Find & Replace is worse than Word's.
How can I recover/attain this feature?

I have struggled to find this "feature" for a while.
It CANNOT be that Apple stripped out a core capability of even a basic text editor.
Apple, a reply here because this is a F%$#$%^ joke if true.

if your editor is a jtextarea, i would suggest something like that:
String textTyped = textarea.getText();
String lookForText = new JOptionPane.showInputDialog("text you look for?");
int indexOfTheText = textTyped.indexOf(lookForText);
textArea.moveCaretPosition(indexOfTheText);maybe the instruction to focus on the caret after the caret move is missing here

How do I find & replace a single character?

Am using Adobe Acrobat Pro....
The find/replace box pull down has "Whole Words Only" checked and I cannot uncheck it. How can I find and replace a single character throughout a document?

That's just how it works. You can "find" anything, but you can only "replace" whole words. As soon as you click to open the "replace" section of the dialog the search settings are locked into their basic states, even if you don't enter a replacement string (but that part's a bug).
The simple answer is that you cannot replace all instances of one character using Acrobat's inbuilt tools. You're expected to edit the document outside of PDF and recreate it.

How do I find/replace italics in a PDF?

I would like to change all the italics in a PDF to a different font so they will be recognized when I convert the PDF to an InDesign file. Right now they're fake italics of an embedded font so when I convert the file they disappear and turn into regular text. I will be changing the fonts after I convert so I don't necessarily have to keep them an italic font, just something different so I'll be able to change them to italics later. I tried a couple sentences and made them Times New Roman instead of Janson Text 55 Roman and when I converted they stayed as Times New Roman and I was able to make them an italic font. Just wondering if there's a way to search the whole PDF and do a mass find/replace instead of scrolling through the whole novel and changing them manually?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

How to implement find methods in CMP?

As OC4J does not support EJB-QL, we need to implement the find methods by ourselves. But how? Here is my thought.
1) Still declare the find methods in EJB home, such as
public Collection findBySponsor(String sponsorGuid);
2) Do not add query part to ejb-jar.xml file;
3) In the bean class, implement the find method using JDBC code.
Does CMP allows explicit-implementation of finder methds?
Does CMP allows explicit-call to JDBC code?

Henry -- Why go to that trouble? For the near term I would suggest that you just modify the generated
orion-ejb-jar.xml descriptors which will include tags to allow you to either 1) enter a partial criteria or
2) enter a complete SQL statement. This is much less work and when EJB-QL is available with the product,
then you have to only add the EJB-QL to the ejb-jar.xml.

How can I Find/Replace a word on all cast members together rather than one at a time?

I currently use Director 11.5.9 with Windows 7 64 bit
I have some director movies I programmed years ago. I included the file extension .dir when I used "go to movie" statements (I didn't know any better at that time). For example, I would write, go to movie "alpha.dir". I have now updated those movies to Director 11.5.9 and want to protect them by updating them to .dxr movies. Obviously, the code "go to movie name.dir" won't work any more. I need to take out the .dir extensions from every occurance in those movies. Most all of them are cast scripts on buttons. A few of them appear in score scripts.
In searching this forum, I did find some tips for search/replace on ALL cast scripts, but when I attempted to follow them I did not find the options they suggested on the drop down menus.
Can someone tell me the steps for going into a Director movie and telling the Find and Replace function to replace ALL occurences of ".dir" in Cast Scripts with ""?
Currently, I am having to find them manually and replace them one at a time. There are a LOT movies with a LOT of occcurences of .dir, so this is far too slow. I'm sure it can be done more efficiently.
Any help than anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated. I have a project that is coming due very soon and I don't want to delay it if possible.

When you open any script in this movie and press CTRL+F it should open a search-and-replace text dialog with a "Replace all" button/option that does exactly what you are asking for - unless I've misunderstood.

i asked for assistance the other day with time machine
now i have worked out this is the reason i can not back up with TM, due to no disk image in my portable hard drive
I saw a post on youtube where it explains you can copy a your HD disk imag from your time machine back ups enabeling, time machine to back up
But i can not find where the TM Back up driver is situated in my TM Back up's
Some advice would be greatly appreceate as i am rather new to Mackintosh

Hi again.
Just re-reading your first post, I wonder if you're confusing a disk image backup with Time Machine?
It's certainly possible to create a disc image of your Macintosh HD and copy it to an external drive.
However, as a backup that method has a drawback; you can't boot from a disc image directly. It needs to be mounted on a bootable system before it can be used. So it's not really much use if the internal HD fails, at least as far as allowing you to carry on working while the repair is carried out.
Much better (and simpler) is to clone the whole drive to the external using CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper (there are plenty of others, but those appear to be the most popular).
That will give you a bootable backup which can be kept up to date by incremental backups using the same applications.
In the event of total internal HD failure all you need to do is replace the drive then boot from the clone and reverse clone to the internal to get up and running again.
Many of us use both a bootable clone and Time Machine (on seperate drives) as each has it's different uses.

How can I remove all content between two tags using Find/Replace regular expressions?

This one is driving me bonkers... I'm relatively new to regular expressions, but I'm trying to get Dreamweaver to remove all content between two tags in an XML document. For example, let's say I have the following XML:

<![CDATA[<p>Some text</p>
<p>Some more text</p>]]>
</custom>
I'd like to do a Find/Replace that produces:
<custom>
</custom>
In essence, I'd like to strip all of the content between two tags. Ideally, I'd like to know how to strip the CDATA content as well, to return the following:
<custom>
<![CDATA[]]>
</custom>
I'd much appreciate any suggestions on accomplishing this.

I found David's article to be a little thin with respect to examples using quantifiers in coordination with the wildcard metacharacters; however, I was able to cobble together a working expression through trial and error using the information he presented. For posterity, here’s the solution:
Find:
<custom>[\d\D]*?</custom>
Replace:
<custom>
<![CDATA[]]>
</custom>
I believe this literally translates to:
[] = find anything in this range/character class
\d = find any digit character (i.e. any number)
\D = find any non-digit character (i.e. anything except numbers)
*? = match zero or more times, but as few times as possible (i.e. match multiple characters per instance, but only match one instance at a time, or none at all)
I’m still not sure how to effectively utilize the . wildcard. For example, the following expression will not find content that ends with a number:
<custom>.*?[\D]*?</ custom >
I'm presuming this is because numbers aren't included in the \D metacharacter; however, shouldn't numbers be picked up by the .*? expression?
