How to manage hard drive space

I'm running out of space on my macbook air.  too many TV purchase downloads on Itunes.  If I delete them, can I re-download them in the future if I want to watch them again?

You should still be in the habit of backing up your purchases locally.
Let's say you purchased a TV show last season and the audio track is in stereo. If the copyright holder decides it wants that TV Show to have a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio track they will provide new files to Apple and the original ones you purchased will be removed. Well, if you have not backed up your purchases you have just lost that TV Show in your purchase history. It is gone and you can't download or stream it again.
So backup your purchases.

  • Managing Hard Drive space

My computer's hard drive space had been constantly shifting. For a few weeks, after removing files from my computers, I had been slowly losing hard drive space anytime I use an app, later to recovery bits of space. However, during this week, i went through a collapse of losing almost 300 MB of HD space. Then today, I lost 1 GB. I figure it might be from updating steam (although that was done the day before), but I am really freaking out from this. Can anyone suggest how I can manage my HD space?

your hard drive space will constantly chage in size depending on what you're doing.
if you have 2GB or 4GB of memory - part of your hard drive is being used as a swap file.
check your activity monitor and see how much swap file is being used by your hard drive.
mine show's zero because I have 16GB of RAM

  • How to Reclaim Hard Drive Space

    Hi there,
I have deleted several GB of messages, folder by folder from Entourage as I have the complete set in Mail. However, I had restarted my iMac and there seems to be too small amount of hard drive space available after this delete has been completed. I don't see anything left in the Entourage folders, nor in the Trash on the dock. So, where else can I check to reclaim the hard drive space? I'm currently showing 140 GB and there should be around 155 GB free.
    Advice much appreciated. Thank you!
    Lynn

Have a look at this article* I wrote:

  • Is there any application or plug in that anyone knows of that could tell me how much free hard drive space i have left on my mac? Thanks so much. . .

I'm looking for an application or plug in that can tell me how much free space I have available on my hard drive left for my MacBook Air, thanks so much!

The other way to do this is to choose About this Mac under the Apple menu.  When the window appears, click on More Info, and then choose Storage from the selection of tabs at the top.

  • How to clear hard drive space?

my hard drive is "full" i need a way to clear space or compress files, without taking them off of my computer, Ive already put all my photos and movies on an external hard drive all thats left is 25 gigs of music and applications really. hard drive is 80g. I cant have my external hard drive all the time and i need space on the laptop in general, thanks for any help

i said right there, that i didnt want to move any more stuff off of the computer, ill dump trash or compress files, but i need to make room.
Not being a smartass, but somtimes it doesn't matter what you want.
If you can't clear enough space you may have to move more files off, or buy a larger internal drive.

This is not tested on Tiger, but there may be an equivilent.

  • How to check Hard Drive space?

    Hey...
I am new here...bought a MacBook last July and I am loving it. Just one question though...I bought a MacBook with 120 GB RAM but when I check the computer it says that it's capacity is 74.21 GB which I am thinking is actually the 80 GB RAM. Also, when investigating further, I realized that the serial number on the box was in fact different than the serial number listed on the computer directory. Is this common or did I get ripped off?
    Thanks

i have a fealing you waited to long to go about trying to fix this, if you paid for the 80 and wanted the 120 then the guy that sold it to you is either dumb or just made a mistake. if you paid for the 120 and got and 80 you probably got ripped off, but this late in the game you can't really go back.
hope that it works out for you

  • Memory and hard drive space.

    Hi,
i was wandering how i can find out how much memory im using, and how much hard drive i have left, or have used. Because im thinking of buying two more movies from itunes, but i dont want to make my macbook slow or anything like that.

    Hey,
Theres numerous ways to find out how much Hard Drive space you have. A more in-depth look at your HD can be found by accessing Activity Monitor and then Clicking on Disk Usage. You can also see how much RAM you have available by looking at the System Memory panel. You can also see how much available Hard Drive space you have by opening Finder and the amount you have Free will be at the bottom of the window. Another way to show info is to use your Desktop to show how much total space your Hard Drive has and how much you've used by Right Clicking the Desktop> Click on Show Item Info> and then under Macintosh HD it should display the info.

  • How do I delete Photo Stream photos that are taking up hard drive space in my Masters folder, but not actually appearing in any event, or on the interface at all?

A couple months ago, I activated photo stream using my apple ID. I was under the impression that all the photos uploaded to my photo stream would only use server space on icloud and wouldn't actually utilize disk space, or at the most, the option was available to only download specific photos to my hard drive. My hope was that I could upload the photos to a specific drive, and view the uploaded thumbs or low-res comps on any device as a reference.
    This is not the case.
What I have found is that iphoto has been automatically downloading any and all photos uploaded to my photo stream. Not just the thumbnails, the entire thumbnail + all resolutions. I shoot RAW photos so in my case, the original averages about 15-25MB per photo.
I have been uploading directly to an iphoto library on an external hard drive specifically designated for handling all my RAW high-res images.
What has been happening is all those RAW files are also being uploaded directly to my iphoto library on my iMac and eating up memory which I cannot reclaim, even after deactivating my Photo Stream in preferences. We're talking almost 100 GB of memory is tied up right now.
I don't want to just go in and start deleting files and folders in my Masters folder, since I have heard this will break iphoto, but the photos in my photostream do not show up in any event and I need to reclaim the hard drive space.
How can I safely delete them?

If the files are loose inside the iPhoto library package here's one way to get them out:
1 - open your library, select all of the photos in the library and add a unique keyword, XXXX,  to all of them.
2 - Rebuild the library with  iPhoto Library Manager  as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
3 - open the library, create a smart album with the criterial "Keyword is not XXXX".
4 - the smart album will include those photos that were not visible in your original library. Select them and use the key combination of Command+Option+Delete to move them to the iPhoto Trash bin.
5 - empty the iPhoto Trash bin via the iPhoto ➙ Empty iPhoto Trash Bin menu option.
6 - empty the Trash bin in the Dock to remove the files from your hard drive completely.
Be sure to read Note 1 above.  You can use the new library without your books, slideshow, etc. and it will not  contain those errant files.  Of course delete the original library if the new one is satisfactory.

  • I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space, and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run t media from an external hard drive? If so, how do I transfer my files?

I have a new Windows tablet computer with limited hard drive space (32 GB), and cannot transfer my itunes library to the hard drive. Can I run itunes from an external hard drive? I have tried to follow some of the directions on this site, but am having no success. Thanks.

iTunes will run fine with the media on an external drive.
However, I suggest that a tablet computer with a tiny hard drive is not ideal as the primary computer for managing an iTunes library, even a small one. If you have another machine, perhaps a big, boxy, inexpensive old desktop with a decent amount of storage, that might be a better choice.

  • How do I get more hard drive space for my Macbook Pro?

I am losing hard drive space and I don't know why? Is something writing or copying on my Macbook Pro?
      Thank you...

The Hatter..This may be helpful information. I go to force suit and there is both Safari and "Safari web content not responding in red" and this may
be the problem. I delete files and I get up to 50 to 50 MB and then it goes right back down to zero with no use on my part. I made a mistake by
viewing **** on a CHatterbate site and I think that this may be the problem. How do I get rid of this virus, if that is what is happening> I ran Clam X and
it did not find anything...Thank you, again.

  • How do I find what's using my hard drive space

My wife has a 14" iBook. How do I find what's using all the hard-drive space? It only has a 40GB hard-drive (it's one of the older G3 models) but there isn't a lot loaded onto the HD. There is only 3GB space left. I've gone through every application and utility and document and every folder (document, movie, etc.) and the largest space-hogging folder is iTunes which uses 15GB because of the music. I can't find any singular folder that uses any sizeable HD space. I recently loaded Tiger so I don't know if Tiger uses the rest of the space or if it's just a combo of all the other applications.

You could download and use WhatSize to see what may be eating up the space.
With a 40 GB hard drive, you need to keep at least 6 GB free in order to avoid problems.

  • How can i tell how much hard drive space my website is taking up on my computer?

I have a website that i build through iweb and publish via mobile me.  i have about 200 podcasts on the site, and I am trying to figure out how much hard drive space this is taking up on my computer.  these files are not in itunes, and i'm not concerned about the space they are taking up in my cloud, i just want to know how much space on my computer they are taking up because i'm trying to decide if i should move my iweb site to a different computer to alleviate some space issues.  any help would be much appreciated.

Check the size of the Domain.site2 file that is in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder.  it contains all of the files used to create and publish your site.  I'm not sure if it copies the podcasts into it or not. You can open the domain package and do a search for them. Just don't move, rename or delete any files inside that package or your site is toast.

  • How do I find out what's eating up my hard drive space?

I installed Leopard quite a while back on my 1,8 GHz PowerPC G5 tower. I had to try twice and call Apple support because I was having problems installing it. I never seem to have much hard drive space, and I don't really have much on this computer. My iTunes library takes up a bit of room, but there's really not much else on the hard drive. I cleaned out some old stuff tonight and made some room, but I am wondering how much of my space is eaten up by the previous OS. Also wondering if Leopard is on here twice because of the double install attempt.
I am trying to make room to install Logic Express 8. So where are the OS's on here so I can trash anything extraneous, and is there a way -- other than individually Apple I'ing everything -- to see what's taking up so much space on my hard drive. As you can probably tell, I'm not the most computer literate person. Thanks.

Try a program such as Disk Inventory X or OmniDiskSweeper.

  • Limiting the hard drive space on a managed account

I'm setting up a managed account and want to limet the amount of hard drive space the person gets to use
mac minni solocore   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Once again, a macosxhint comes in handy. The hint describes one way of converting an existing account:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031104223355900
Setting up a new account is easier. Just create a disk image of the desired size, making sure the name of the mounted volume is the same as the user's "home" folder (the name of the disk image doesn't matter). Uncheck the "Ignore ownership..." checkbox in "Get Info", and make sure the user owns both the mounted volume, and the dmg file. Place the disk image in the top level of the user's "home" folder, then change the ownership of the user's folder to "system" (root).
Then, from an "admin" account, enter the command below in "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Terminal.app", substituting the user's short name for 'username', and the correct name of the disk image:<pre style="overflow:auto; padding: 5px; width: 500px ; font-size: 10px; border:1">sudo /usr/bin/nicl . -create /users/username home_loc '<home_dir><url>file://localhost/Users/username/diskimagename.dmg</url></home_dir>'</pre>But as I mentioned, there are drawbacks to using disk images and it isn't all that effective unless you hunt down every last place on the system where the user has the privileges to save files (including everybody else's "Drop Box" folders. I only mentioned it because it does get brought up as a strategy.

OmniDiskSweeper is a free utility that checks HD space.
FreeSpace cost $1 or is a free utility that checks HD space.
