How to monitor DFS login prompt problem? (share corruption)

Twice we have experienced problems with our DFS shares, both times we discovered that there was one server with a share problem. If we tried to open a share from that server we got a logon prompt. The fastest fix was to rename the DFS folder and the new
one was replicated in minutes.
There was about a year between the first and the second time we had this problem.
The problem is that our Citrix environment is built on DFS shares.  Both times when we got this DFS problem we couldn’t find the cause straight away, it took some hours to discover it was DFS. This problem got a big impact on our production environment.
Lately I create a lot of Powershell scripts that checks the status of something. If we got a problem with something (like Exchange) then I search for the symptoms of how I can recognize it with Powershell. The output of those scripts is returned to the monitoring
tool Nagios.
I want to create a check for this DFS problem, so when it occurs we get an alarm from Nagios and we can fix it right away with less impact for our users. The problem is that I don’t have a lot of information about recognizing the symptoms of this DFS problem.
The only thing I know that there is a login prompt of accessing the share on per server.
The second problem is that I can’t test it, because I can’t and don’t to force a corruption on the DFS share.
I found someone that created a check based on writing a file to a DFS share and checked that date stamp of the file. For now it is my best option.
I’m wondering if there is someone that got a better idea or if somebody does know more symptoms about recognising this specific DFS problem. (Events (we couldn’t find them), errors in a log file)

Hi,
Please try to access the DFS file shares not the dfs path but the UNC path the DFS members to check if you still get a logon prompt.
You could also refer to the article below to see if it helps:
You cannot access a DFS share by using a valid user account in Windows Server 2008 R2, in Windows 7, in Windows Vista or in Windows Server 2008

    Hello!
I'm writing an applet which reads 2 files on the server. The files are
"above" .htaccess, and I don't have to enter username/password to read them.
However, I DO get promptet for u/p when the applet loads. How can I possibly find out what generates the login?
    I have tried:
    1. modifying the .htaccess
    2. chmod 777 every file
    3. different approaches to reading the urls
    4. System.out.println("problem fired") on every possible location.
to no use. I can't correct the problem when I don't know where it is.
Can someone give me a hint to how I can find the event that fires the login-prompt.

  • How to avoid login prompt when viewing reports

    Hello,
I am trying to access a report that I have put in the shared reports folder
I have copied the URL, see below, from the copy shortcut link.
However I am being prompted for a User name and password
    http://server:port/OracleBAM/12345/reportserver/default.jsp?Event=viewReport&ReportDef=6&Buttons=False&ReportParameters=()
    Can you please advise
    a) If I can bypass or default a username and password in the URL
    b) If the above is not achievable then do I need to set up each person, viewing the report, with a username and password and somehow pass these credentials in with the URL.
    Thanks in advance,
    Kevin

    Hi Kevin,
I am sure its too late to post a reply for this question but it will be useful for others.
Yes, you can bypass the login prompt by implementing SSO to the BAM with a default username/password.
You can write a simple java code to simulate the process of submitting a login form, thus allowing users to access weblogic protected resources, like BAM report URL, without re-entering the username and password in the login page.
You can use HTTP client API to simulate Form Based HTTP Authentication. It will have to first post HTTP request to authenticate default user 'weblogic' and then from HTTP response get the cookie and pass it to the subsequent HTTP request (with the report URL) to access protected resource.
I had the same requirement and it worked for me :).
    Thanks

Honestly, I have no idea. This has been an on again/off again problem for some people going back to the original version. DVD and Blu Ray haven't been much of a priority for Apple for a very long time.

  • [SOLVED] Login Prompt Vs Blank Screen On Startup

    Hello there,
    Problem:
      - When booting into Arch I am either presented with the Login Prompt (Yay!) or a blank back lit screen (Boo!). The pattern is completely random. I can boot up 2-3 times in a row successfully then go on a streak of blank back lit screens and am forced to constantly reboot until I get it to work (see below):
Boot Attempt => Result after selecting Arch from Grub
    1) Blank screen

Search regarding blank screen turned up this thread, https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=151240 , which seemed relevant. It led to KMS though not sure exactly what that does even after reading the Wiki so I decided to post here rather than tinker with it and risk making things 100x worse than they already are.
Any idea as to what could be causing my irregular boot behavior?

cfr wrote:Although that thread seems similar, I'm not sure how this could be the same issue as I thought KMS required a suitable video driver. Still, you could try passing nomodeset on the kernel command line as described in that thread. The worst that will happen is that it won't work. (You can edit the line from the grub menu so if it doesn't work you can just reboot and be back to the same settings you had before.) I guess you'd have to boot a few times to know if it helped.
Hmm, that seems to have fixed my problem. 9 successful reboots in a row. Figured with my erratic boot behavior as opposed to 100% blank screening that my problem was far worse when in fact the solution seems to have turned out to be quite simple.  Oopsie. My bad guys.
Followed these steps to make the changes persistent, https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Kernel_parameters , and seems to be holding up well. Will go ahead and marked as Solved and hope no more monitor boot problems arise.

    Nope. Nope. Yep.
cfr wrote:You can try examining the log files to see what is happening on successful versus unsuccessful boots. journalctl will let you do this and you can filter it with various options.
Cool, first time I've heard of this and just tested that out. Looks to be a wealth of information. Will have to remember this next time I have boot woes.

  • Solaris Appears to Hang on Boot - No Login Prompt/X Doesn't Start

    Hi,
I've using Solaris for just a few days, and I'm starting to get somewhere with it, but I've hit a problem I'm not sure how to resolve.
The system appears to boot normally up to the point of the prompt "Wait for the login screen before attempting login".
I used to be able to produce a Login prompt during this message, then X would start, but since I installed OSS, it just sits there, not responding. X seems to fail to start, but no messages are displayed.
What do I need to do exactly in order to stop OSS loading? I think this is the cause of the fault.
OSS is up to date, but Solaris 10 is a clean install (2008.05).
I'm going to need a step-by-step to fix this. I don't even know how to invoke a console based text editor right now - I've been using gedit from X.
    Best regards,
    AstroTux.

    Astro,
Have just experienced the same thing - exactly - on SXCE snv_103 (11/08)! In the past, in debugging X server issues, we could boot to safe mode and edit pertinent files from there...
NOW, we're getting no login screen at all, and can't use the keyboard to 'stop' the xserver from running, as it apparently isn't! Did you find a fix for this? Lou

  • Login prompt appears for web app when sql db is not on same server as WebAp

    Hi,
I am deploying a VS2005 web application on a server (which has crytalReportsviewer); lets call that server A. The database the crystal reports access are on a different server, server B. In this scenario, when I run the web application, and try to bring up the reports on the web page, I get login prompt. Even if I provide valid login credentials (I have set up a user for this purpose the behavior is erratic; for some reports the report is displayed and for others it errors out with 'unknown error' message.
If I put the sql db on the same server, it works fine.
I use the crystal reports application to update the database source. When I do this, I use Ole db connection and set the 'integrated security' to true. But setting the integrated security to true does not bypass the login screen on the web app.
My question is, how do I set up the report database parameters (connection string etc) so that the user of the web application does not have to go through the login screen when the web application and the sql db does not reside on the same server.
    Thanks.

That sound like a [Double-Hop|http://blogs.msdn.com/knowledgecast/archive/2007/01/31/the-double-hop-problem.aspx] issue.
You'd install and configure Kerberos to hop over the credentials - see post: SQL Server 2005 integrated security.

  • T6300 ALOM hangs at login prompt?

    Hi,
We have a T6300 server. I have got the ALOM details from the chassis server.
When I connect to the ALOM IP address it hangs at the ALOM login prompt:
    login as:
Copyright 2008 Sun Microsystems, Inc. All rights reserved.
Use is subject to license terms.
Sun(tm) Advanced Lights Out Manager CMT v1.6.4
    Please login:
Any ideas why it would load and then hang and not let me type at the "Please login:" prompt?
I'm guessing I need to reboot the ALOM, is this possible to do without effecting the running server? If so how?
    Thank You

That question has come up before bout that Knowledge Base article; all of the tips and suggestions in that remain valid under 10.4 (I suspect the article was retitled when Tiger first came out, in anticipitation of a never-needed Tiger version of the same article).
Would you know if anyone had been playing around with keyboard inputs in System Preferences? That's a 'gotcha' where if someone is playing around with the settings and decides to set say Dvork keyboard as the input method, normal Roman keyboard keystrokes will be putting out the wrong characters. (That happened on one lab Mac once; after figuring out the problem, I used a Dvork keyboard map to translate the desired password into Dvork-equivalant keystrokes.)

  • Occasional Database Login prompts

    Post Author: Jon Webb
    CA Forum: .NET
I'm have a problem with occasional logon info prompts when I refresh a report. I'm using Crystal Report .NET XIR2 with SQL Server Express. Normally, my reports work fine. The server and database are set dynamically at runtime. The code I use for this is:     Protected Sub SetDatabaseConnection(ByVal rd As ReportDocument)        Dim tlois As TableLogOnInfos = Me.CrystalReportViewer.LogOnInfo        Dim ci As New ConnectionInfo        ci.DatabaseName = DefaultDatabase        ci.IntegratedSecurity = False        ci.Password = Password        ci.UserID = User        ci.ServerName = DefaultInstance        For Each tloi As TableLogOnInfo In tlois            tloi.ConnectionInfo = ci        Next        If rd Is Nothing Then rd = Me.CrystalReportViewer.ReportSource        For Each table As Table In rd.Database.Tables            table.LogOnInfo.ConnectionInfo = ci            table.ApplyLogOnInfo(table.LogOnInfo)        Next        For Each subreport As ReportDocument In rd.Subreports            For Each table As Table In subreport.Database.Tables                table.LogOnInfo.ConnectionInfo = ci                table.ApplyLogOnInfo(table.LogOnInfo)            Next        Next    End SubSometimes, however, I get Database Login prompts when I refresh the reports. This happens with some reports and not others, even though I call the same method above for all reports. The Database Login prompt has the right server name, user, and password, but the database name is blank. The behavior varies over time.  Yesterday, for example, one of my reports was showing this behavior, and another wasn't. Today, without any code changes, I'm getting it in two reports. But a third report still works. All three reports use the same command for accessing the database data, and have the same subreport structure. Also, the behavior is client-dependent. I can run the report on one PC (using the same SQL Server) and the report works fine. On another client, I consistently get the login prompt with two reports but not another. I believe the problem only occurs where the server is remote. We've never seen it with a local SQL Server. All this leads me to think that something is happening behind the scenes with Crystal Reports. Perhaps the logon info is being cached somewhere and not reinitialized. I've tried rebooting my client machine and restarting the SQL Server to no avail. Does anyone have an idea what is going on here? This is a serious problem for some of our customers. • ScreenSaver prevents me from logging in, never get login prompt

My Mac Pro, Leopard 10.5.2 installed wouldn't let me login today. It was in screensaver mode, and wouldn't come out of it,
When I hit a key or moved the mouse to get the login prompt, the screensaver paused as if the login prompt was going to appear, but then the screensaver kicked back in.
I could SSH into the machine and run commands, but killing ScreenSave or Finder or anything else I could think of wouldn't fix the problem.
Finally I just had to issue the rude "reboot" command.
Any ideas what happened here, or more importantly how I might avoid having to reboot to get back in in the future?

This seems to be related to the preference pane for accounts, which will no longer let me make modifications as an adminstrator to any other accounts or login information. The little lock to authenticate just says "authenticating...." then goes back to being locked.
Probably should post a new topic, but any ideas?
