How to prevent unicode conversion in Java?

Hi all,
There are some existing Chinese characters stored in our RDBMS using charset=IBMPC850. The text can correctly be displayed using a window GUI developed by Visual C++ by declaring the field as DBCS. However, when I tried to retrieve the Chinese field back using JDBC and JSP. The words are distorted. I suspect that Java converts all string to unicode and no matter what encoding I tried to change when viewing my page, I still don't get the Chinese words correctly.
On the other hand, if I enter Chinese characters through my JSP, I can read them back correctly using:
resultSet.getString
Does anyone have any ideas about this?
Your help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

My guess is that you need to tell your JDBC driver which encoding to use when talking to the database server. I don't know which DBMS or driver you use so I can't help you with that. :-(
A workaround could be to manually convert the strings after they have been retrieved from the server, using some code like this:
String s = resultset.getString(...);
s = new String(s.getBytes(), "Big5");
That should do the trick if the JDBC driver reads the characters using the default (in Java) encoding, and if the database is encoded in Big5 (I don't think it's encoded in IBM code page 850 since that is an 8-bit encoding used in western Europe).
Good luck!
Jesper

  • Unicode conversion in java

is there any package in java which has some function that convert a enter key in to hindi font
    i.e.
    n==&#2344;
    thanks in advance
    With regards
    Hemjyo

No - because whatever that char is, it's not an 'n'. Also, this has nothing to do with fonts, but encoding, although not even that is an issue here. You want to do a mapping of some sorts.
(And there are no functions in Java. The things one calls are named "methods".)

  • Java Add-in or unicode conversion first?

    Hi all.
I have just performed a BW 3.5 (NW 6.40) to BI 7.0 (NW 7.0) NON-unicode upgrade. The next two things we want to do are unicode conversion and java add-in installation.
I am wondering which of these actions should come first; Java add-in or unicode conversion?
    Any thought on this?
    Regards,
    Thomas

It´s pretty straighforward using the sapinst.
Make sure you patch up the AddIn to the same patchlevel your ABAP is running on (means,if you BIND support package 13 to the upgrade, upgrade the Java engine to SP13 as well after installation).
    Personal opinion:
If we have the choice we don´t use the Java Addin but install the Java part on a separate system. The Addin adds more complexity and dependency to the system. On top of that it makes memory configuration and predictability of sizing very difficult.
This is - however - my personal opinion, this may or may not be true for your environment.

  • Unicode conversion for ERP

    Morning!
In that famous OSS note about unicode conversion, the attached guides are labeled
    as NW unicode conversion guides.
-- ERP can use the same guides?
-- how about the unicode conversion for other products such as SM, SCM, CRM, etc.?
    Thank you!

    Hi,
Answer to both the questions would be Yes. The conversion guides are as per the Netweaver base release for any of the applications (ERP, SCM, SRM, CRM etc).
Eg, If converting a CRM 2005 Non-Unicode to Unicode, the guide SCP700SP<xx> would be relevant, because the Netweaver 700 SP<xx> is the base release for CRM 2005. Similarly for all applications.

  • How to go for Unicode conversion?

    Hi All,
Presently i'm upgrading my SAP 4.7 system (6.2 WAS) in to ERP 2004 (6.40 WAS), which is an non-unicode upgrade.
Now should i first complete Unicode conversion or apply the latest SP stack.
Also please tell me how this Support pack will affect me in Unicode conversion?
Order of this steps will be really helpful for smooth flow of work
    Thanks in Advance

If you have already completed your upgrade, the best practice would be to install the SP stack first in order to have the latest updates available for the unicode migration tools.  Then proceed with the unicode migration.  There are slight differences in the process between support packages where you may have to create a migration program manually in an older support package and the very same migration program is included in the later support package.  SAP publishes separate unicode migration guides, based on the support package level, due to these updates.

  • How to estimate the time needed for unicode conversion

    Experts:
I am going to perform an upgrade from 46C (non-unicode) to ECC6/EHP4.
In the action plan , it's hard to estimate the time needed for unicode conversion.
We do not have a sandbox to benchmark that time.
Could you please help share your experience here?
    Thanks!!

    Hi,
usually it is very hard to estimate a proper time.
There are some hints to get a rough feeling (SAP note 857081 and [SMP link|http://service.sap.com/~form/sapnet?_SHORTKEY=01100035870000380759&_OBJECT=011000358700001279022010E] ).
However please note that SAP highly recommends to do a Sandbox conversion - otherwise there is a high risk that the PRD conversion will take (much) longer than expected.

But SAPInst failed to locate the java tools that I found them in the \usr\sap\<SID>\sys\globlal folder <b><u>in CI host only</u></b>.

Thanks Deepak, I'm trying to understand how a 220GB+ system can be compressed to 7GB.  I can understand some shrinkage because of temp space and indexes, but that seems pretty extreme.  I would have expected 70-90GB.  Even 10% is 3x what I have.
The problem I am having is with sapinst.  When I run the Export steps, all I am left with is exactly what you list.  Just the LABEL, and the empty DATA and DB dir trees.  sapinst finishes, says it was sucessful, but then when I fire up MIGMON to actually start the export, it is looking for DDLORA.TPL, and the EXT and STR files.  Based on what I am reading, sapinst is supposed to create those (and I see them being generated during the PREP phase), but if I don't move things manually, export_monitor.sh just sees empty directories.
Let's do it a different way.  Once you have completed running the sapinst export steps, what files are in the <export dir> that MIGMON is supposed to pick up and use?

  • Error while database export in package SAPDODS_33 (Unicode conversion)

    Hello,
I am performing Unicode conversion on an upgraded BI 7.0 system. This is running on AIX/DB2.
When I take database export for conversion, one package fails (SAPDODS_33) with error "The file system is full". In fact, df -k doesn't show that any file system is full.
I am taking the export to the following location: /db2/BWS/sapdata/EXPORT_DIR
There are 3 system-managed temporary tablespaces: PSAPTEMP, PSATEMP16 & SYSTOOLSTMPSPACE which were residing in /db2/BWS/saptemp1/NODE0000. This was getting full during the export. Now these temp.tablespaces have been relocated to a new file system of size 15GB.
But still the package SAPDODS_33 doesn't get exported. Could you please let me know how to solve this issue?
    Thanks a lot!
    Sundar.

    Hi Sundar,
if the problem is due to a high temp space usage. The root cause is typically the
sort during export. If the table is large, the sort spills to temp.
You can avoid the sort by doing an unsorted export or tweak the DB2 optimizer to use the primary key to do the sort.
Before DB2 9, you can reduce the OVERHEAD tablespace parameter to zero. Return this value to its previous value after the successful export. This is a indirect hint to the optimizer that random IOs are cheap. This might not help.
With DB2 9, this should not happen, because the  DB2_OPT_MAX_TEMP_SIZE=10240 registry variable is set under DB2_WORKLOAD=SAP which limits the temp space usage to 10GB if possible. You can reduce this parameter further if necessary. Another problem could be that the optimizer has chosen the wrong temp space. The optimizer choses the temp space with the largest amount of pages (not size).

  • Combined Upgrade and Unicode conversion of Sap 4.6C to ECC6.0

    Hello all,
my project team intends to carry out a combined upgrade and unicode conversion of an SAP ERP 4.6C system with MDMP to ECC6.0 (no enhancement package). The system is running on Oracle 10.2.
In preparation for this upgrade, I have gone through the SAP notes 928729, 54801.
We need to get a rough estimate of the entire downtime so as to alert our end users. From the CU&UC documentation in 928729, I read up note 857081. However the program in this note cannot be used to estimate the downtime as my system is < SAP netweaver 6.20.
Is there any other SAP note or tool or program that I can use to estimate the downtime for the entire CU&UC? Thanks a lot!

    Hi,
Combined upgrade depend upon number of factors like database size, resources on the server and optimization. In order to get idea of how much downtime, it will take, I would suggest you to do combined upgrade and unicode conversion on sandbox system which should be the replica of your production system. And try to optimize it. From there you can get approx. downtime required.
Also, please read combined upgrade and unicode conversion guides on  http://service.sap.com/unicode@sap
    Thanks
    Sunny

  • How to set the conversation id programmatically in a BPM process

    Hi all,
    I am using BPM/SOA 11g PS3.
Is it possible to set the conversation id programmatically in a BPM process starting with a none start event?
I know I can set it easily if I use a BPM process starting with a message start event.
All I have to do is set it in the "wsa:MessageID" node in SOAP Header when I initiate the process instance.
However, I have no idea how to set the conversation id programmatically in a BPM process starting with a none start event.
I looked for if there is any appropriate method in the Java api for the process instance management, such as IInstanceManagementService and CompositeInstance, but no method seems to be appropriate.
Does anyone know how to do this?
    Regards,
    Kenji

    Hi fifty,
Did you get a solution to the above problem you have mentioned? I have a similar issue i am trying to fix.
I have a webservice call in a process activity and if the call does not work i get a soap fault and the fuego.lang.ComponentExecutionException . My process requires that i catch the exception infact any kind of exceptions that occur on that call and perform another activity in the process.
I have defined an exception handler at the activity level for java.lang.Exception and java.lang.RunTimeException.
i don't see anything in the catalog which would handle the SOAP fault OR the componentexception.
