How to rebuild partition table

Hi, everyone
Two months ago I broke my partition table by trying to install windows 8. I had it repaired with "test-disk" , but the problem is that gparted now sees my disk as a whole 300Gb unpartitioned space, fdisk however recognizes the partition table. I was wondering what will happen if I press 'w' in fdisk will this format the partitions and erase everything, or will it just try to do something similar to what test-disk did? I want to do this because now I have a 50 gig partition left for windows and I want to add this to my / partition. Before the problems I used to do this kind of operations with gparted.
Thanks

That's why you zerox of the map (dd ... bs=440 count=1 or at least fdisk -l /dev/... >somefile) before you rip it up.  The latter is all I needed to save my butt when I borked a PT.  As long as you use your head, there is no reason dicking with the partition table particularly warrants a full data backup.
That said, you can bet your @$$ I'd backup even "reaquirable" data in this situation, unless doing so was more trouble than reaquiring it would be.  "An ounce of prevention" and such.  Unique data, fugeddaboudit.  I have at least three copies of stuff I can't replace and don't want to lose.

    Web = /srv

    DHCP = /var
Mail = Depends which package you use. I use postfix and told it to use /srv
I would half your swap, reduce /var and put the extra space into /srv
Also create a separate /tmp and /home to prevent accidental or deliberate DoS attacks by filling your / partition

  • How to import partitioned tables in different tablespace

    Hi everyone,
I try to import the partitioned tables in different tablespace.
    Consider the following situation:
I have a dump file which is created by using "Export" utility. Some data are in partitioned tables, some of them are in non-partitioned tables. Also, all tables are located in "MYTBS" tablesapce. I try to import all data from this dump file to another database. I didn't get error messages when importing the data from non-partitioned tables. However, I got error message when importing the data from partitioned tables. The error message is: tablespace 'MYTBS' does not exist.
I just want to how I can solve this problem other than create 'MYTBS' tablespace for my new database.
    Thanks in advance.

  • How to import partition table in 10 express edition database

    Hi all,
I have 10g express edition installed on my laptop, I have a table with partition now I am unable to import that table in my oracle 10 express edition database.Anybody help me in this regard that how could I able to import this table in my database, even I dont want its partitions I want only data.
    Regards

The phrase "awfully small table" was not intended as criticism. It merely notes that tables smaller than 2 GB would normally be too small to partition. Since you didn't specify the amount of data initially, it was reasonable to suspect that you might exceed the express edition data size limits.
If you pre-create the table as a non-partitioned table (i.e. do a CREATE TABLE manually) before importing, I would expect that would allow the import to succeed (of course, you'd have to ignore the warning that the object already existed when it was time to import).

I've looked in the BIOS setup but cant see anything in there about partitions......

    Christian333, welcome to the forum,
I personally have never heard of your problem, others may have, but I would start by running Drive Fitness Test from Hitachi to check the hard drive. Even if you don't have an Hitachi drive it will say whether or not the drive is OK. I always run it from CD.
If the drive is OK I would then run Secure Data Disposal at it's lowest level in order to eliminate anything in the boot sectors and then afterwards the recovery discs. If problems are then experienced it's time to call service.
    Hope this helps

  • How to record partitioned tables in Data Modeler ?

    Hi,
I have discovered the options for partitioned tables. Some questions remain, however.
    1) Static partitions
For one table, a set of predefined partitions is set up in the data model. In certain situations, a new partition is added. Is it possible to generate alter table DDL from the model that will add this partition ?
    2) Dynamic partitions
For another table, partitions are added and deleted on the fly (exhange partition). For this tabel, I would like to record just 1 partition, which is added when the tabels are created initially. It is not important to include the actual partitions when synchronizing with the database. Is it possible to skip this for a certain table (i.e. record this preference with the table, since it does not apply for all partitioned tables... ) ?
    Thanks,
    Richard.

    Hi Richard,
For one table, a set of predefined partitions is set up in the data model. In certain situations, a new partition is added. Is it possible to generate alter table DDL from the model that will add this partition ?
In Data Modeler version 4.1, ALTER TABLE ... ADD PARTITION statements are generated for new LIST partitions, but not for other types of partitions.
For another table, partitions are added and deleted on the fly (exhange partition). For this tabel, I would like to record just 1 partition, which is added when the tabels are created initially. It is not important to include the actual partitions when synchronizing with the database. Is it possible to skip this for a certain table (i.e. record this preference with the table, since it does not apply for all partitioned tables... ) ?
I've logged an enhancement request on this.

  • How to find partitioned tables whose loading may fail with ORA-14400 error

    Hi,
We have several partitioned tables. Sometimes, when partitions are not created for that month, we get this error
ORA-14400 inserted partition key does not map to any partition
May I know if there is any script or sql which I can use to find out tables which may fail for loading if DBA won't create partitions in next 2 weeks?
    Thank You
    Sarayu K.S.

    Sure, you can:
    1.Look in DBA_TAB_PARTITIONS by partition_name if you use a particular naming convention, where owner = <your_owner> and table_name = <your_table_name> and partition_name = <your_expected_partition_name>
    2. Without going by partition name, you could use dba_tab_partitions and instead check that there is a partition for your table with a high_value you are expecting to use. Be aware that the high_value is a long datatype, so you will likely need to convert it to a varchar2.
    3. Before your big load, you could also insert one row into the destination table with the new partition key that will be used, and trap errors with an exception handler. Roll it back if it succeeds.
    4. Many partitions could be created in advance to avoid the constant monitoring of new partitions.
    5. Or you could also look into switching to interval partitioning if you are on 11g and get out of the business of having to create partitions manually.

  • How to change partition table type

I want to change my windows 7 partition table type, but I don't know anything about computer, is there any simple ways to do that? Someone recommend me Easeus partition master, which is a free partition software, but I don't know this kind of software,
    any advice?

    Hi,
You can use diskpart command to convert partition table type.
Change a GUID Partition Table (GPT) Disk into a Master Boot Record (MBR) Disk:

  • How to dd Partition Table through First Partition

Hi; I have a flash drive which has a single NTFS partition that fills up less space than the whole drive (so there's a bunch of empty/unused space at the end of the drive). I'd like to use dd to make an image from the very beginning of the drive (to catch the partition table) through the end of the NTFS partition, ignoring the empty space after it. I tried the commands below but they didn't seem to work (a copy of the drive had partition table issues):
    dd count=1 bs=512 if=/dev/sdb of=partition_table.img
    dd bs=8M if=/dev/sdb1 of=sdb1.img
    cat sdb1.img >> partition_table.img
    rm sdb1.img
    mv partition_table.img mydrive.img
Any ideas? Am I failing to capture something between the partition table and the first partition? Or is it possible my partition table is not 512 bytes?

My suggestion is to dd the MBR (dd if=/dev/XXX of=<image file> bs=512 count=1) and use ntfsclone or fsarchiver to make the image.
But if you want to use dd for the whole image:
    $ fdisk -l /dev/sda
    Disk /dev/sda: 251.1 GB, 251059544064 bytes, 490350672 sectors
    Units = sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
    Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
    Disk label type: dos
    Disk identifier: 0x4d9ddc04
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
    /dev/sda1 2048 2099199 1048576 83 Linux
    /dev/sda2 * 2099200 2303999 102400 83 Linux
    /dev/sda3 2304000 490350671 244023336 8e Linux LVM
To image everything through the first partition, I would (dd if=/dev/sda of=image bs=512 count=2099200). I stop at 1+ the end of the partition, because the first sector is 0, rather than 1. You can also modify the bs for better performance, but you'll have to modify the count accordingly. For a 1M bs I think you divide the count by 2048 (FYI, this is completely unrelated to the fact that the partition starts on sector 2048). But I would suggest you do the math yourself.

  • How to create PARTITION table by?

I have huge table(1million records) which affect query performance. I notice it may help by partitioning it into two. One contains heavily used records and another the rest. Anyone can help? Any other advice on perf improvement? What I have done: 1>Reduced the no of EXT. 2>Created Index.

i installed vista with my os x.
each time i boot into my vista the system shows "partition tablr not recognized" and then load some loaders from vista.

    joh

You should probably purchase a legitimate retail version of Windows Vista. The error comes from the BIOS emulation hack that bypasses the Vista activation function.
It should eventually boot, however. After which, you can open the command shell, and type:
    *bootrec.exe /fixmbr*
    *bootrec.exe /fixboot*
... which ought to make the message go away (and Vista boot faster).

  • Partition tables replication

Can anyone let me know how to replicate partitioned tables using goldengate.

    Hi,
I have enabled replication for one of the partitioned table and inserted few rows which got replicated successfully.
Then i tried to update the rows at source, and i could see that this change didnt happen at target side. Similarly when i tried to delete rows my replicat process abended with an error.
Please check this link where i have posted the output and all. Let me know what can be done, we need to move to production implementation asap if this testing goes fine.

  • Can I use gpt to recreate/unerase a partition table? (Rebuild the GPT/GUID partition table?)  I don't want to do FILE recovery.

(Yes, I've  googled a bunch and read threads like this one already.)
Can I use gpt or some other app to recreate/unerase a partition table?  That is, how can I rebuild a disk's GPT/GUID partition table?)  I don't want to do FILE recovery.
What happened: Instead of erasing a single partition off a disk with many partitions, the entire partition table was erased (using Disk Utility, w/o deleting the underlying files).  Somehow the "Erasing a disk deletes all data on all its partitions." warning message was missed.
I have a copy of the output of df, with the number of blocks in each partition, from just prior to the erasure, so I should be able to recreate the GPT/GUID partition table.  Editing the GPT with a hex editor is not feasible.  Simply recreating the partitions with Disk Utility will overwrite the key filesystem tables on each partition, and I don't want to do that, plus Disk Utility doesn't allow me to specify exact partition sizes anyway.
Surely there's an app for rebuilding the partition table (other than emacs' hexl-mode!) for recreating/unerasing a partition table when the partition sizes and orders are known?  I've looked at the advertising for a bunch of recovery software and none of them clearly indicate that they will do what I want.
I guess I can try using gpt on a copy of the reformatted drive I've made with dd, and see what happens.  But perhaps someone knows of a tool that should do what I need, or knows if gpt is that tool or not.
There are answers and tools that will do FILE recovery - search for files and recover the ones that aren't fragmented or deleted.  As far as I can find, they just look for files on the disk, and don't pay much, if any attention to the filesystem info or directory heirarchy, which in this case is valuable.  Of course I could send it in to DriveSavers, or the like.  But none of that seems necessary, and the scavenging file recovery apps won't do the job well,
    E.g. some are mentioned here:
I don't want to do FILE recovery.
    Thanks for any help.
The links in this post are to pages describing the underlined term, e.g. the man pages for df and gpt.
    dd output includes:
    Filesystem
    512-blocks
    Used Available Capacity  Mounted on

Aperture has the ability to work with files in their existing location. They are called "referenced masters." When you import images, you should select the "In their current location" in the "Store Files:" drop down box. Have a read of the documentation for full specifics. Unsure how you can resolve your duplication; might be some work but next time have a read of the manual first
Information for versions is stored in the Aperture database (library file). The masters can be inside the library file itself, or they can be somewhere else.

  • How to delete the data from partition table

    Hi all,
Am very new to partition concepts in oracle..
here my question is how to delete the data from partition table.
is the below query will work ?
    delete from table1 partition (P_2008_1212)
we have define range partition ...

    874823 wrote:
delete from table1 partition (P_2008_1212)This approach is wrong - as Andre pointed, this is not how partition tables should be used.
Oracle supports different structures for data and indexes. A table can be a hash table or index organised table. It can have B+tree index. It can have bitmap indexes. It can be partitioned. Etc.
How the table implements its structure is a physical design consideration.
Application code should only deal with the logical data structure. How that data structure is physically implemented has no bearing on application. Does your application need to know what the indexes are and the names of the indexes,in order to use a table? Obviously not. So why then does your application need to know that the table is partitioned?
When your application code starts referring directly to physical partitions, it needs to know HOW the table is partitioned. It needs to know WHAT partitions to use. It needs to know the names of the partitions. Etc.
And why? All this means is increased complexity in application code as this code now needs to know and understand the physical data structure. This app code is now more complex, has more moving parts, will have more bugs, and will be more complex to maintain.
Oracle can take an app SQL and it can determine (based on the predicates of the SQL), which partitions to use and not use for executing that SQL. All done totally transparently. The app does not need to know that the table is even partitioned.
This is a crucial concept to understand and get right.
