How to repair volume

I am using Onyx to fix up my Mac. It is running slow. When I installed Onyx, it stopped and gave me a box that said something about needing to repair volume.  It told me to get my Mac install CD, go to Utilities and then to Repair Disc. But when I inserted my install CD all I can do is install.  How else can I do this. And oddly, when I inserted the CD, the Onyx box appeared offering my Onyx choices. So I'm not sure what I should be doing at this point. It also instructed me to back up.  So not sure how to proceed.  Thanks
Running OSX 10.6.8

Insert the Install DVD and boot from it by holding down the C key prior to the startup chime. Then, in the menu options you will find lots of goodies like password reset and the much desired Disk Repair. Run that so you can do a Repair Disk instead of just a Verify Disk. If errors are found, as will probably be the case given OnyX's warnings, repeat the Repair Disk activity until no more are found.  Should also do a Repair Disk Permissions for good measure, although you only need to do this once.
The reason you need to restart with the DVD's mini-OS is that the hard disk has to be modified to do the repairs. And this can't be done if the Mac is using it as the boot source. Note that booting from an optical disk takes LOTS of time. Be patient.

  • Help with disk repair: "Volume Structure" failed

    Hello all:
For the sake of full disclosure let me state right off that I am new to the world of MAC and my not have all the "MAC language" correct - so, if I misspeak (or miss-write) something I apologize.
I have recently purchased an iMac (21.5" - 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo - 4 GB 1067 MHz RAM - 1 TB harddrive) with OS X 10.6.2 installed. I have to say that after over 20 years with MicroSoft I am enjoying the stability and quality of the MAC.
Anyway, as part of my education in the care and feeding of a MAC I ran the TechTool app yesterday. I had no indication that anything was wrong with the computer - but, I would like to become familiar with the various utilities for the care of the machine "before" a problem occurs.
As the app ran I was pleased to see that all the tests passed (Processor, RAM, Video RAM, etc...). However the computer failed the last test: Volume Structure.
Here are the directions I was given at the end of the test:
    Volume Structure
    Failed
TechTool Deluxe can scan volumes for problems related to the numerous structures that are necessary for the volumes to operate correctly. If problems are found, TechTool Deluxe can attempt to repair the damage to help reduce the chance of future problems.
If TechTool Deluxe has discovered problems with the structure of a volume, allow the program to repair the problem. Quite often these issues are minor, but sometimes they can be indicative of a more serious problem. If the problem persists, consider backing up the device, reformatting the media, replacing the data, and then testing again.
I was also instructed to access the Apple site and download the most recent version of TechTool Deluxe that can perform repairs.
I downloaded the software and followed the instructions to open the file in the Disk Utility app and burn a CD. Following the directions I then booted up on the CD by restarting the computer while holding the "C" key.
The computer booted up on the CD and loaded TechTool Deluxe. I ran the same tests as above and once again the Volume Structure failed. When I clicked on repair it seemed as though the program was trying to fix the problem - then it abruptly stopped and stated that the Volume Structure could not be repaired.
I removed the TechTool CD, rebooted the computer, installed the TechTool Deluxe that I downloaded from Apple, and ran the Disk Utility. When I tried to "Verify" the disk this is what appeared:
Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD"
This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk.
Following these instructions I rebooted the computer using the Mac OS X installation disk - and the only option I found was for an installation of the OS.
OK.... I give up. Where do I go from here? Is this a serious problem? What the £$%& is going on??!!
Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

Don't worry - volume structure issues are not serious at all. Follow These Apple Instructions on how to repair your HD using Disk Utility on your installation discs.
You might also consider acquiring a good 3rd party Utility app as there are many things they can do that Apple's DU cannot. DiskWarrior and Drive Genius are my favourites. I use them as part of my routine maintenance schedule. Prevention is better than cure. I believe one should be in every Mac user's arsenal.

  • How to repair disk permissions inside Time Machine?

I need to restore my .sites file for iWeb from Time Machine, but when I try I get the following error:
"The operation can't be completed because you don't have permission to access some of the items." What IS restored are a few (10 or so) .jpg files that were part of my site that once contained thousands of pictures, dozens of movies, and three years of work. The file details inside Time Machine ("Quick View") is 972MB, but again -- what is actually restored is only about 10 pics of a mb each.
Does anyone know how to repair disk permissions for a file inside Time Machine? In Disk Utility the button to repair permissions is grayed out when I select Time Machine volume.
    Much thanks in advance!

I have the same issue (and circumvented it by copying the files with "cp" from the unix shell). The permissions on the TM disk don't really look wrong, and the fact that I can copy the files means that they aren't read protected.
There seems to be some serious bug in Time Machine here, my guess is that the TM restore operation somehow does things in the wrong order (like copying with preserved access lists to a temporary location and then try to move the files from there. This won't work since the files will be protected with access lists from accidental removal on the TM disk).

  • TechTool 3.03 Unmounted Hard Drive After Repairing Volume Structure

Hi Apple Discussions! Any help, advice or information anyone can share will be greatly appreciated. So here's what happened:
I have a 17" imac Flat Panel. *After using TechTool 3.03 to repair the Volume Structure (had gotten a 92 Error Message) Techtool would not quit.* I turned off the computer and *when I restarted I heard the foghorn sound instead of the regular start up chimes and then got a* *Kernel Panic (You have to restart your computer.)* Since the computer was a gift I didn't know if it was still under warranty but I called AppleCare anyhow. Even though the warranty has expired the rep stayed on the phone with me and tried to help. She had me eject the TechTool disk by holding down the mouse (who knew?) and insert the OSX disc....*Long story short the Hard Drive is no longer mounted.* She set me up with an appointment at a Genius Bar.
I hooked the imac up to an old ibook via Firewire and accessed the imac's hard drive (can't use my new MacBook Pro because it has a different Firewire pin.)
*I also zapped the PRAM and know it chimes on as usual but I still get the Kernel Panic.*
I was curious so I continued to research and I see *Apple warns to not use TechTool 3.03 to repair Volume Structure errors for OSX 10.4 which is what the imac is running.* Of course, if I knew ahead a time....Is this why the Apple rep helped me even though my warranty expired? *She said they just need to remount the Hard Drive. I'm wondering what that entails and can I do it myself?* I'm not looking forward to lugging my imac down to the Apple Store on 5th Ave. in NYC!
Thank you and sorry for the very long story!

Hi Dale, Thank you for your response. When I use DU to Verify or Repair I get this message:
    *Invalid b-tree node size*
That's a pretty serious error. I'm pretty sure even the updated version of TechTool could not repair it.
If I wanted to download the TechTool updater and use it on the imac how would I do that since I can't log on?
I was thinking you could use your iBook at the time. But the TechTool disk is machine specific so that may not work.
I'm taking it in today to a Genius Bar so we'll see.
Hopefully they will run DiskWarrior on it. Otherwise it's an +Erase and Install+. hope you have a backup!
Thank you for your help. I also just learned that it is an imac G5 (oops!)
You are quite welcome! Good Luck!

  • Repair volume from Disc

    Hi all...
I'm trying to repair my internal HD by using the SL disc, but my iMac will not let the computer boot with the disc in place. Is there something I'm missing? It just gets hung up on the start screen (white) with the Apple logo. I'm currently running 10.6.6, so I'm not sure if there's a bug in there that prevents this from happening. I do have another Mac but would need clearer directions on how to repair the volume on my 27" using my 24" as the host.
    Jamie

You went too long, or it is now way too severe.
When the system boots, no matter from which drive or device, it scans for other volumes with a system out there.
And in some cases the directory is too corrupt.
Might want to try Single User Mode and FSCK -fy command first and hope that helps.
Normally I'd also add: open case, disconnect the drive. Should then boot and tells you that is where the problem lies.
Of course you also want to rule out and disconnect any cables and devices.
See if you have a spare 30GB on one of your external drives you can shrink and add, and install OS X there.
Do you have a case and pull your hard drive and put in USB/FW case?
Someone should be able to walk you through Target Disk Mode if Google and Apple Search of support articles doesn't. Should be easy enough to find.
And some background on why I swear by Alsoft Disk Warrior (along with CCC or SuperDuper):

    Recovering a dead hard drive:
    http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20050302225659382&query=bootcommandline
Having that external emergency boot drive is useful, to recover, boot from, system maintenance, and so you can run Data Rescue 3 if needed.
So, do you have Disk Warrior? Drive Genius 3? TechTool Pro 5? spare backup drive space?

  • How to repair Open Directory Master after Changing Hostname

    Summary:
How to repair Open Directory after Changing your Server's Hostname (see separate post)
    Problem:
I had to change our server's hostname from a private hostname (server.name.private) to a public hostname (name.dyndns.org).
    Procedure:
    1. Precautions:
Since I was anticipating major dramas I tested the change of hostname on a clone ( I used Super Duper, and I very strongly advise everybody to heed this warning because a change of hostname will corrupt your server services, in particular Open Directory)
Second, I exported the network users from Server Admin and copied the archive to the Drop Folder of the server's local account (because the network accounts will be unavailable after demoting the OD Master.)
    2. Change hostname and demote OD Master
    a) I re-booted the server from the clone
    b) I changed the hostname in Server App and I noticed that the Open Directory Password and the Kerberos database were still stuck with the old hostname.
    c)  I then demoted to a standalone directory (Server Admin) and I tried to promote the server to an OD Master using the Server App (Manage Network Accounts). Server App always returned an error saying I should check my network settings.
    3. List of 'fixes'
I tried the following fixes to no avail (which does not mean that you can skip them)
    a) I checked the DNS entries, forward and reverse were working fine (sudo checkip -changehostname)
    b) Checked with Lookup in Network Utility, all was fine
    c) I deleted all system certificates (Keychain) which showed the name of the previous hostname
( N.B. you need not delete email certificate and private/public keys)
    d) I tried to assign a new static IP in Networking Preferences (had no visible result)
    e) I re-booted from the working drive and I re-paired permissions on the clone; I ran disk repairs.
Despite all this I could not re-create an OD Master.
I then looked for this dubious folder /var/root/Library/Application Support/Certificate Authority.
I could not find this folder when using the Finder's Go To Folder, nor did "Easy Find" see this folder.
I was about to give up when I read the posts on this page and I entered the Terminal commands
    sudo rm -R /var/root/Library/Application\ Support/Certificate\ Authority/
I had not much hope when I set about to re-create the OD Master from the Server App.
But lo and behold !!! I did not trust my eyes when Server App claimed that the OD Master had been successfully created. And indeed, Server admin showed a running OD Master, LDAP, Kerberos and Password Server all running again !
Final touch: re-import the user accounts.
    Epilogue:
I woud not have been able to fix this issue had not so many others shared their experience and the working solution.
    (Refer : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3219325?start=0&tstart=0 )
    Thank you all !
Let's hope that Apple will fix this annoying issue in the next server update.

  • How to Repair IP address on printer

I had to replace the router on my home network and now my C6180 all-in-one printer does not recognize/connect to the router.  I have a Vista operating system on the PCs, a Cisco Valet M10 router and an HP C6180.  The PCs are connected wirelessly to the network and work fine.  The Printer is connected via ethernet cable to the house cable box and the house cable box is then connected via cable to the router.  I've gone through numerous help desk and think I've identified the problem as needing to manually change the IP address on the printer itself.  I have tried to enter that manually but 1) the IP address ends in one or two digits but I can't find how to delete the other digits on the HP and 2) when I hit ok, the manual entry disappears and is not recognized.  Can anyone tell me how to repair the IP address on the printer?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi,
If the last number of the IP address you are trying to assign is for example 12, try entering 012.  So basically, if it wants three digits in each of the four fields, just enter nought(s) to make up the number.  This may also be the reason it refuses to accept the address when you click Ok.
Let me know how it goes.
