How-To: Restart the Database Server (SQL Server) in SharePoint Farm safely ?

Hello,
My farm has 4 SharePoint servers: 2 Application-Servers, and 2 WFE-Servers.
Each WFE-Server is running Distributed Cache service which means, I have 2 Distributed Cache service.
I must restart my SQL Server, But, How can I do that without losing the Cached data?
I can use Stop-SPDistributedCacheServiceInstance -Graceful which will move the cache from one server to another, But, what to do with the other one then?
I am really concerned because TechNet says: "Stopping the cache results in partial data loss. The Feed Cache depends on the Distributed Cache service.
Tags and document activities are saved only to the Feed Cache.
Tags and document activities are not persisted to content databases."

In my opinion you do not need to stop the distributed cache service.
You are correct the graceful shutdown will work if you want to stop a cache host. it is graceful because it should move the cache data to the other host(s).
I believe that the SQL is not hosted on SharePoint server?
My opinion is that no data should be lost if the SQL is not available for a limited period of time. The Distributed Cache is in memory cache.
You will however have downtime in case you are not using any High Availability solution for your SQL.
In case the period of maintenance on your SQL is longer you should plan it better and maybe stop the SharePoint Farm as described here

If it is restart, then you need to stop it first and then stat it again.
cd $PS_HOME/webserv
ls
(then you find your domain directory)
cd <your domain directory>
cd bin
./stopPIA.sh
(wait for conclusion)

startsap and stopsap have the folllowing syntax :
startsap [db|r3|j2ee|all|check] [<instance>]
you could use startsap/stopsap to start/stop any of the db or r3 or j2ee or any particular instance.
e.g.
startup db
startsap r3
startsap j2ee (just j2ee part)
similarly for stopsap
if you have multiple instance you could use the instance ABC as
startsap ABC
If you just want to restart any particular process of j2ee engine, you could use jcmon.

I created my entities and I give Save Changes. (Ok)
Then, I Tried to Connect with the database through Server Explorer, if I use the instance of the SQL Server Management Studio 2012(PC-PAULO\INSTANCIAPJ) as Server Name, the database doesn't appears but, if I use the the instance (localdb)\v11.0 the dabase
appears.
How to change the save to the SQL Server Management Studio 2012, I don't know where this (localDB)\v11.0 saves.

The code should be ok and it is really strange that the database is only created into the local database in your machine. I am wondering if it is related with the machine environment, could you please have a try with below demo on your machine which works

How to deal with Short dump that restarts the index server?

Hi ,
I have been experiencing this problem whenever any exception occurs in my SQL SCRIPT procedure. For instance when there is a situation when I try to insert a value of 50 characters in length to a column with max size of 40 it throws a short dump and restarts the index server. I tried to insert the exception handling code as well but still the problem persists. Is there a way to solve this issue?

crashes are rather generic reactions of the system to virtually any kind of problem that may occur.
Memory shortage is one of the more common issues in current SAP HANA setups and SAP HANA development is heavily working on handling memory shortage situations more gracefully.
Massive over allocation of memory, for example by very large intermediate result sets or join result sets typically can be addressed by correcting the query or model that leads to the issue.
Anyhow, the initial post was not about a memory shortage but about a crash that seemed to have occurred with wrong data type handling.
These are two very different kinds of problems, so I am not really sure how your comment relates here.

I assume you store JavaScript to web server folder and browser caches your file.
Use query string end of file name like
/my.js?v=0.0.1
And when you change file, change query string value
Templates JavaScript help says:
File reference using a query string in the URL referencing the application version, such that when the application is upgraded
(and the version is incremented), the browser will be instructed to always load the new file and ignore any previously cached files.

How do I get it to restart automatically on failure.
How do I receive failure notification messages.
How do I diagnose the cause of the failure.
We were looking at using apex in a production environment but the prospect of unplanned restarts of production databases every week is a little daunting.

3) When you check the status of the database listener, does it show services running for this specific port (default 8080, I guess)?
4) If you normally go to http://server:port/apex, when this situation occurs, what happens when you try and go to http://server:port?

I'm a new entry in this forum and I'm a beginner with database oracle.
I used always SQL Server as database and it was easy to use after installation.
With SQL Server configuration management program I could to launch the SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) service and the database server start up!!
With SQL Server management studio I could to launch the client application, then was establishing a connection to the server and all was working fine!
Now, how to work with oracle database?
I installed oracle server and client version 11g R2 on windows 8, but how can I start the server database? .. and how can I start the client application for querying?

Conflict resolution manager having which spid at the database server.

Folks,
I've come across a situation where in one of the
1.SID was generating high redo SID - 1098 .
2.when i checked what this sid was doing - i figure out that it belongs to a report set, still having the sid at the database server.
3.The client process id(12041) of thie SID(1098) is shown as the spid shown in the system column at system administrator --> concurrent manager --> Administer --> Highlight conflict resolution manager --> click processes.
4. I understand that we need to grep for the osporcess "ps" using spid and not using "client process id" (process from v$session). Please clarify.
5.when I grep for 10241 it is indeed pointing to CRM process. but when I query for spid (12055) associated with sid (1098) it points to a Reports set which completed error and generating some kind of redo ( which triggered all the above questions).
6.Now the question is should we be checking for SPID (120550) associated with SID(1098) which says (LOCAL=NO) and safe to kill. as the status of the SID says inactive, though the last_call_et is just showing 1.

I used the in built Package UTL_SMTP(pp_to,pp_from,pp_subject,pp_hostname) but i didn't got the success. Actually i dont know how and what parameters has to pass to this package .

As suggested above no such procedure to be followed unless it is a DAG.
If you are running exchange and DC in one OS. Stop exchange services first then restart server. (commands below to stop exchange related services)
net stop msexchangeadtopology /y
net stop msexchangefba /y
net stop msftesql-exchange /y
net stop msexchangeis /y
net stop msexchangesa /y
net stop iisadmin /y
net stop w3svc /y
This is bcz DC stops quicker than Exchange, therefore Exchange is unable to write to the domain controller and has to be be "killed" by the operating system.
This continual "killing" of the Exchange services, instead of allowing them to shutdown gracefully is not good for the database and is one of the prime reasons for recommending that Exchange is not installed on a domain controller.
A better option is to stop the services before you begin to shutdown the server. This will also cause the server to shutdown more quickly because it isn't waiting for the services to timeout. This can significantly decrease the shutdown/reboot time of Server.

It depends on the operating system you are using. If you are using *nix then sendmail needs to be configured.
