How to setup a RAID-0 disk over 2TB on VxVM.

I am running a 3510FC and VxVM 4.1 on V490 with Solaris 10.
I got a problem when I try to add a RAID-5 LUN to rootdg. I always got a error message "Error V5-2-213".
It said " It is not possible to encapsulate c1t40d1, for the following reason:
<VxVM vxslicer ERROR v-5-1-6922 Unsupported disk layout.
Encapsulation requires at least 0 sectors of unused space either at the beginning or end of the disk drive.>"

  • "Create" button dim when attempting to setup mirrored RAID in Disk Utility.

I'm trying to setup a mirrored RAID in Disk Utility (v10.5.6) in MacOS 10.4.11 on a PowerMac G5. I've got the System and all of my files on a 500 GB Seagate internal drive and I've added a blank 500 GB Western Digital internal drive to be the mirror. When I boot from the Seagate drive and run Disk Utility, I can follow all of the instructions for setting up a mirrored RAID (except the last instruction):
    1) Launch disk utility.
    2) Select my boot drive.
    3) Click on the RAID tab.
    4) Enter a RAID Set Name and select a Volume Format (Mac OS Extended Journaled).
    5) Drag a drive or volume to the set. Okay, I actually have a problem here, because if I drag the boot volume or drive to the set, nothing happens (it doesn't appear in the selection box). So I drag the blank volume to the set and it shows up in the selection box.
    6) Select RAID type (RAID Slice).
    7) Click the "Create" button.
That's the step that I can't complete; the "Create" button is dimmed (grayed out, disabled). My boot drive isn't partitioned (it has just one volume), I've run Disk Utility to repair Disk Permissions before I attempted to set up the RAID, and both drives are formatted as "Mac OS Extended Journaled." The only potential cause I can think of is that the two drives I'm using, though they're both 500 GB drives, are from different manufacturers. I can't imagine that would make a difference though.
Why is the "Create" button dimmed?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Hi there,
    Thanks for your help!
Your explanation makes sense. I've just recovered from a hard drive failure and although I'd backed up most of the files the night before, I still lost a day's worth of email and several days worth of other files. Mirroring appealed to me because then I'd always have a completely up-to-date copy of everything, but your bad experiences with it give me pause.
Is there another backup strategy you can recommend that would give me really up-to-date backups of my entire boot volume?
    Thanks again!

How easy is it too setup an external 500GB Hard disk drive (HDD) in enclosure? HDD is a brand new Western Digital 500GB HDD in an enclosure which has FireWire ports. The drive is not formatted.

Plug it in and use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to format it as a Mac OS Extended (Journaled) disk.

  • I need help on how to setup hardware raid for ASM.

In the « Recommendations for Storage Preparation” section in the following documentation: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b31107/asmprepare.htm
    It mentions:
--Use the storage array hardware RAID 1 mirroring protection when possible to reduce the mirroring overhead on the server.
Which is a good raid 1 configuration considering my machine setup?
“I put my Machine info below.”
Should I go for something like:
5 * raid 1 of 2 disks in each raid: disk group DATA
5 * raid 1 of 2 disks in each raid: disk group FRA
Then ASM will take care of all the striping between the 5 raids inside a disk group right?
    OR, I go for:
1 * raid 1 of 10 disks: disk group DATA
1 * raid 1 of 10 disks: disk group FRA
In the second configuration, does ASM recognize that there are 10 disks in my raid configuration and stripes on those disks? Or to use ASM striping, I need to have lots of raid in a disks group?
    Here is my Machine Characteristics:
O/s is Oracle Enterprise Linux 4.5 64 bit
Single instance on Enterprise Edition 10g r2
    200 GIG database size.
    High "oltp" environment.
Estimated growth of 60 to 80GIG per year
    50-70GIG archivelogs generation per Day
Flashback time is 24 hours: 120GIG of flashback space in avg
I keep a Local backup. Then push to another disk storage, then on tape.
    General Hardware Info:
    Dell PowerEdge 2950
    16 GIG RAM
    2 * 64 bit dual core CPU's
    6 * local 300G/15rpm disks
    Additional Storage:
    Dell PowerVault MD1000
    15 * 300G/15rpm Disks
So I have 21 Disks in total.

I would personally prefer the first configuration and let ASM stripe the disks. Generally speaking, many RAID controllers will stripe then mirror (0+1) when you tell it to build a striped and mirrored RAID set on 10 disks. Some will mirror then stripe (1+0) which is what most people prefer. That's because when a 1+0 configuration has a disk failure, only a single RAID 1 set needs to be resync'd. The other members of the stripe won't have to be resynchronized.
So, I'd prefer to have ASM manage 5 luns and let ASM stripe across those 5 luns in each disk group. It also increases your ability to reorganize your storage if you need 20% more info in DATA and can afford 20% less in FRA, you can move one of your RAID 1 luns from FRA to DATA easily.
    That's my 0.02.

  • How to: Setup AAE for Remote Disk Access & Serve PS3

    Hi there,
I've read so many tutorials, and tried so many combinations, but haven't found anything for my specific purpose.
I was wondering if someone might have the insight to do a quick run-through (including specific settings) on how I would setup my Airport Extreme for the following scenario/purpose.
    Setup:
    1. Netgear DGN2000 ADSL Modem + Router in one
    2. Airport Extreme = Model #A1354
    3. Western Digital Studio 1TB (mac os extended journaled formatting - not used as time machine)
    4. PS3 80gb
    *To accomplish:*
    1. Access the Western Digital HDD remotely. So I can access my files from work.
    2. Use the Western Digital HDD to serve media to the PS3 when I'm at home, so I can watch movies without having my computer turned on.
    Caveat:
    1. I don't want to use/pay for MobileMe.
    Many thanks,
    Glen

Hello nelga. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Since most of your questions are not really AirPort networking related, I will do the best I can to provide assistance.
    1. Access the Western Digital HDD remotely. So I can access my files from work.
I know you don't want to use BTMM, but to best understand the hurdles you will be up against, it might be worth taking a quick look at how BTMM works "behind the scenes" to allow you to access a HDD remotely.
    BTMM - Basic Communication Flow
o For a computer connected to the Internet via a router, BTMM "asks" the router for its configuration information. For a router, like your AEBSn, that uses NAT-PMP, BTMM will ask the router to assign arbitrary public ports. In turn, the router will provide these port assignments (& the router's Public IP address) back to BTMM.
o BTMM then sends this information to the MobileMe account. In background MobileMe updates a special set of DNS entries to be used by BTMM. These entries are then made available to all BTMM clients using your MobileMe account. When a computer, with BTMM enabled, uses your MobileMe credentials, it automatically retrieves a list of all other computers/routers that are registered with the same account. All these devices should then appear under the SHARED section of the Finder.
o When attempting to connect to a remote computer (or router), BTMM creates a secure connection to that remote device using the information from the MobleMe account.
o Once the connection is established, the devices can then communicate with each other.
The key to all this is that you will need the following in order to be able to remotely access the HDD:
    1) Your ISP must provide you with a publicly reachable IP address.
    2) If your ISP provides you with a Dynamic (vs. a Static Pubic IP address), you will need to keep track of that IP address in order to consistently have access to the HDD. Without knowing this address, when your ISP changes it periodically, you will have to manually "retrieve" it to connect again. You can get around this by using a service, like DynDNS.
    3) You will have to configure your NAT router for port forwarding/mapping to allow the necessary file sharing communication to pass through the router to the AEBSn with the shared HDD. Specifically you want to open the appropriate ports for both the AFP (TCP: 548) & SMB (TCP: 445) file sharing protocols.
    4) Similarly you want the AEBSn to be enable for file sharing.
    2. Use the Western Digital HDD to serve media to the PS3 when I'm at home, so I can watch movies without having my computer turned on.
In order to stream video from your WD HDD, you will need a DLNA-compliant Media Server to stream that data to the PS3, which is a DLNA client. With that said, you will need at least one computer (Mac, PC, or Linux-based device) running in order to run this server. The WD HDD has no means to run this server as it has no operating system.

  • How do you change the default User in Windows 7 on a non-RAIDed 4 disk setup?

    Hi.
I have installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on Darling my new machine, which has a four-disk setup without RAID, like this:
    SSD OCZ -OS, Programs (C:)
    WD 2002FEAX - Media Projects (D:)
    WD 1002FAEX - Pagefile, Media Cache (E:)
    WD 1002FAEX - Previews, Exports (F:)
This setup, and because it’s unRAIDed (four separate disks), created the User file in the OS disk, right under the Programs (x86) folder, which at times causes files, which are not programs, to automatically be saved in the User file that's in the Programs disk, when in fact Programs disk is NOT meant for storage.
Further, I cannot save stuff in My Documents because that directory leads the files (that I am saving) to the User folder in the OS disk, forcing me to navigate out of there and into an alternative disk, which is time consuming, more so than if i had a directory leading to D disk.
So, I am wondering, can anyone help me change my directory to establish the default User folder in any folder other than C?
Or, if can someone refer me to Windows 7 tutorials, resourses, that are a tad more than Dummy level.
I have heard that changing around the directory as such can mess with the OS, and though not at Dummy level, I’m quite new to PC and profusely insecure about making changes to Darling at all.
    Thanks.

    Hi folks.
I would like to update you about what happened regarding my wish to move the User location to another hard disk. Heeding your warning, i did NOT attempt that, but rather, moved the location of the My Documents folder in my Library, from its default place on (SSD) disk C:/ (which is the default location because that's where i installed Windows 7,) to another disk -  D:/ called "Media Projects".
Here is how my directory looked before i made the change, my three hard disks were outside the Library directory that's on my SSD (Programs disk):
(I did that by right-clicking the My Documents folder in the left column of a browser window, to access the Location tab.)
What this did is, it put driver D:/ under Documents, which is under Library, see picture, which now enables saving documents quickly, by going from my Library directly to my D drive, however it eliminated the "My Documents" folder/possibility all together from the left-column list of folders in the Windows Explorer browser pane.
I am now trying to do the same with Music, Pictures, and Videos, i.e. to move them to D drive, but am unable to do so because right-clicking those icons in the directory does not produce the Location tab in Properties panel, and nor does right-clicking inside the files themselves.
Similarly, right-clicking Downloads, which i also want to have residing in my D drive, does NOT produce a Location tab in properties pane, though it does seem possible to change the directory manually...see picture.....but am wary....
I am still monitoring my new system, and will see if and how this change effects my system's performance.
    Thanks.

  • Got new miniMac servers with 2x750GB drives. How to setup and confirm RAID mirror?

Literally just got shiny new miniMac Server with the dual 70GB internakky hard drives/disks with
OS X 10.7.$ LION pre-installed. What a nice machine in a super cool box!
Seemed to bootup and run fine!
Now my issue (there will be more for this MAC newbie):
    A. How to setup AND more importantly (item B below) CONFIRM that a RAID MIRROR is working?
Want nothing fancier than 2-nd drive is exact duplicate of 1-st drive at all times.
That is, an 'active and full up-to -the second" backup of the main 1-st drive.
I have done nothing to 1-st drive as it came from APPLE.
When I try to setup RAID set using DISK Utility, I get message about system(1-st drive) can't be used in a RAID or such.
yet I can add 2-nd drive to what I tink is a RAID set and then 'Enable' it.
It seems to add another entry to thr left-side of drves list panel but not sure that 1-st and 2-nd drives are BOTH in the new
"RAID SET' or that the set just consists of the "single" 2-nd disk?
    B. I don't think that 1-st drive data is actually being duplicated to 2-nd drive.
For instance, how do I know that it was 'caught up' to match 1-st drive AND then is
    staying caught up?
    C. A 'RAID UTILITY' Icon brings up a not-available message, but I think that is because I don't
have HARDWARE RAID controller, just software RAID, correct?
    D. What is 'Time Machine' and how does it play into this? I do assume that somehow/someway I need to
have off-machine backups also to be truly protected? How would a 2-nd identical miniMAC server be best
deployed to back each other up, in addition to their own internal RAID-ed disks that items above address?
My whole point of buying 2x750GB disks was to have mirror RAID set and
(foolishly) assumed that factory would set it up that way.
Please help me get setup right so when the inevitable crash happens,
I have some chance of recovering from it.

    A. What are you adding to the RAID: a partition or a hard drive? You can only add hard drives to a RAID. RAID Utility should confirm that your RAID is working
    B. No, I don't think so
    C. It's because you haven't got RAID hardware.
    D. Time Machine is a backup system in external drives. If you want, you can do backups in a external hard drive.

  • RAID: What is it and what are the benefits and How to Setup?

I was wondering what RAID is? How do you set it up? And what are the benefits of having dual hard drives setup in RAID?
I have a powermac G5 (quad 2.5ghz/16gb RAM/80gb SSD & 1tb HD) and I want to setup my SSD and HD in RAID...would that be wise? Thanks guys!

    Hi-
One of the best ways to reduce a RAIDs performance is to mix drives.
Mixing dissimilar drive types should be a shortcut to disaster.
I would rethink the drives to use for a RAID.
The most reliable RAID will be from RAID certified hard drives of the same make and capacity.
After that, you get into software RAID vs Hardware RAID, which both have drawbacks, the latter being price due to the required controller cards and external housing needed for all the drives.
Hardware RAID will allow for better performance, and allow for use of a RAID 5 or RAID 6 to build in redundancy to protect in case of a drive failure within the set, without losing the entire set.
A SSD RAID can really offer some blistering speeds.
    I think possibly a bit much for a G5.
With software RAID, a two drive RAID 0 as scratch for video or graphics work can greatly increase render performance of those respective softwares.
A two drive boot RAID 0 with 2 WD Velociraptors can increase OS X responsiveness.
All two drive RAIDs suffer from the need for a robust backup, making a third and fourth drive needed to create a RAID 0+1.

  • How to Setup an ACL over a Command in solaris 2.6

    Hi all,
Has anyone have an idea on how to setup an ACL over a command
in solaris 2.6 . i.e: to force a user (or a group) to enter a
password to run a command (like mount and others).
    Thanks for your help.
    haed98.
    [email protected]

    Hi head98,
You can set ACL using setfacl commands. This way you can exclusively assign read/write/execute permissions on command that you wish. But ACL doesn't prompt for passwords or you can set passwords using ACL. One way of doing this will be to create wrapper for commands which will prompt for passwd, compare them with /etc/shadow and then execute the real command.
    Hope this helps, Thanks. SUN/DTS

  • How to setup DISK SPACE alert on OEM 10g Grid Control...

    Gurus,
I am trying to setup DISK SPACE notification / alert thru OEM 10g Grid Control, but so far no luck.
Can someone help/guide me on how to achieve this?
    Please advice.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Kartik

Those two links don't say anything about "DISK SPACE ALERT" I already know how to setup notification. I suppose you are talking about Filesystem Space Available (%)
If you need to setup an alert (Notification) then i suppose you need to setup an notification rule.
Yes, these notes do not have the key word "DISK SPACE ALERT" you are looking for, but if you go through the first note CLEARLY and COMPLETELY, you should find your answer.
And he has given an example for Filesystem space available in this note, which is what you are looking for.(I think so)
Say for Disk Space, you create a notification rule for target hosts and have metric "Filesystem Space Available (%)" defined in that rule.
If you aren't talking about notifications and just want to setup an filesystem space available metic, then follow this note:

How do I setup itunes playlists to listen over my Sonos system?

Drag the items in the playlist to a flash drive open in Finder.  It will copy the files to the drive.  The files will likely then play by file name order.  If you want it more structured you will have to read the documentation for your cars player on creating a playlist as this varies by each model player.  Alternatively you can manually rename the files so they are alphabetically ordered in the desired order (usually adding a number to the start of the file name [not the track name in iTunes but the file name in Finder] works best).
Not all players will play AAC format files as is standard for iTunes Store music.  If you encounter this issue you will have to convert the files to mp3.
