How to setup the WRT350N to use a USB NTFS Drive for backup storage?

My network consists of a WRT350N Router/AP/NAS (with a 500GB NTFS formatted USB drive), a Windows Vista Ultimate Desktop (wired connection), a Windows Pro SP2 Desktop (wired connection) and a Windows Pro SP2 Laptop (wireless connection).
Does anyone know what settings to use for the WRT350N and how to setup each of the computers to allow me to use the WRT350N for Backup file Storage?
For example: Can I/should I enable and use the ftp server functions?  Can I just use the guest user account for all logins; etc.?  Do I have to reformat the USB Drive to FAT32?
Any help would be appreciated!

Here is the clue to your question.
1.If you have formatted your Disk with the help of your computer it will be better if you reformat it with the "Erase" button
available on the Storage Tab of the Linksys
router's Setup page.
2.After that You need to make sure that you have
public IP address as your WAN IP on the status of the router to setup a FTP server.
3.You can use guest account for all your users but
please make sure that you select guest as group
while creating user.

  • How to make OSX boot disk using a USB thumb drive? The final answer?

Well guys I am getting really conflicting information about possibility to use USB thumb drive for boot up drive for OSX! Some people say yes, some say no, some - not sure.
Here is the question formulated as straight as possible:
A Mac user wants to create OSX 10.6 boot-up disk on a USB thumb drive, so it can be used to start the Mac instead of using manufacturer’s CD. Also, (thumb drive’s size permitting) the Mac user must be able to install software on it, as it is done on the internal HD.
The computer is MacBookPro , Intel based , OSX 10.6
The USB thumb drive is 16 Gb brand new .
    So,
what the EXACT steps will be, to properly Mac format the thumb drive with OSX disk utility and then install on it the OSX 10.6 from the manufacturer's grey CD that comes with the Mac?
Could someone, who has practical experience and is absolutely sure about the exact steps provide the final answer, please?
Thanks in advance to old hands & pro Mac Users willing to clarify this topic !

    Hi
The instructions to make a bootable USB are [here|http://macs.about.com/od/diyguidesprojects/ss/usbflash.htm]
I have made a bootable USB following the above instruction and also had enough space to install a few utilities. It works fine for me.
I usually like to check disk health of my MBpro intel via disk utilities off the USB after booting from it. Not that this is a recommended way or anything, just that I like to do it that way.

  • Use WRT350N and USB hard drive for backup

I intend to use a Western Digtal MY BOOK Essential Edition (500 GB USB external hard drive) with my WRT350N router for backing up my data every night.  Has anyone used this combination?  Can you tell me if there are any obstacles I should be aware of?  The backup software I will use is Genie Backup Manager.  I think I am going to need help in configuring the router to use the external hard drive.
    Thanks,
    poorolepaul

There were rumors floating around that the USB port in the 350N can not handle anything over 250Gb. Since the drive I used with the 350N was not that large I have no personal knowledge of whether that is true or not.
In any event, using the current firmware for the 350n (1.3.02) you can be assured that the USB will totally lock up about every day or two and the router and hard drive will have to be reset. Using the beta firmware that you can either request from Linksys or find available from someone on the Internet, that problem APPEARS to be fixed. The only problem is that a gigabit network connection will now lock up every day or two. That was my personal experience and what I have read by others.
My recommendation would be not to buy the 350N until they release firmware that fixes these problems otherwise you'll be as frustrated with the product as I am and others are.

  • Using an external hard drive for backup

I admit to knowing nothing about this so I need someone's advice. The wiring for the backlight in my iBook fried 2 nights ago and I have to send it back to Apple..very expensive problem add to the fact that I did not extend my apple care OUCH!! Anyway I had to buy an external hard drive to back it up in case they have to reinstall software..well that was a precautionary they suggested. Can I use my new 300 gig HD to back up both my laptop, desk top and iBook on the same drive or do I need to partition the hard drive to do this. I have close to 2500 photo's in iPhoto and about the same in iTunes. So I could use some expert opinions. I do have most already on CD's but I am hoping to solve back ups for all 3 computers on this.
    Thanks.
    Wendy

    Hello again Wendy.
For your 'for now issue' I would go down the route of starting your iBook in target mode, as described above, plug both it and your external drive (you will need to format this first - go for zero all data as this maps out any bad sectors) into your other Mac. The iBook and the hard drive should mount on the desktop. All you have to do is open a finder window and drag you files from the iBook to the external. If your files are all organised in you home folder you can just move that over and all the contents will be backed up.
In terms of using the drive to backup everything I would post a more complete question in the relevant part of the forum when you have worked out what you want to do (Dr Smokes book holds very good advice on thourough approaches). A word of caution though, most people who bother to backup never rely on just one location/medium. For instance, in the cast of the photo's of my son/family (which are once-only memories) I have them on a seprate drive on my G4, backed up to an external drive every time I add more photos and every few months (depending on how snap happy I've been) I back up the whole lot to a DVD. Some I know go a stage further and store a copy of the DVD/CD with relatives or freinds just in case. It all come down to your level of paranoia or how much you will miss your data (do you really want to have to re-write all those power point/worksheets etc.) if your house burns down or, more likely, if the external drive and your computers are fried at the same time!
Hope this helps (even if it is a bit of a essay).

  • Upgrading my intel iMac to internal SSD and running 1TB external drive from firewire 800 for mass storage while still using a second external drive for backups...my goal-speed with a SSD, to still have 1TB of room for everything i have now..possible?

I seem to kill HD's every two years...the last two i've installed were WD Caviar Black 1TB 7200rpm 3.5" drives. The speed gains over  stock drives have been remarkable. I don't blame the drives for the failures, my machines are up and running 16 hours a day, every day, year round. They die from 'mileage' so to speak...i assume...there's no viral acvtivity or questionable downloads to gunk things up...just lots of work.
I have my third new drive ready to install in my intel based iMac...but i've had a thought...I want to install a SSD in my iMac for the speed gain (and recent price drops)...for standard storage i want to use this new WD Caviar Black 1TB in an external drive bay and connect via firewire 800 for storing everything except the OS and my most commonly used software...am i crazy? will the firewire 800 external drive negate the speed gained with an internal SSD??
I have four iMacs in my office, and one at home. I buy second hand and install new drives and boost memory. I'm going to do this on my 'home' machine...if it works out well i want to upgrade the other three this way...but first i need to know if i'm just dreaming, or will it really make a difference? or even possible??
    Thanks!

The SSD gives great bootup and Application launch speed. I think it also speeds up the video rendering a bit, I do all that on the SSD and then move the finished project to the external drives. As far as the speed for the external drives they are quick enough for viewing video and the file transfer rate is good. I had initially put the SSD into an external cradle (FW800) and the system was faster than on the internal drive. I only got a 1.5GBs SATA drive, perhaps yours could benefit from the 3GBs. I know the 6GBs would be too fast and costs a lot more, even the MacPros need special hookups to make use of the 6GBs.

  • Portege R100: Solution how to restore the unit without using a CD-ROM drive

I have just re-stored my Toshiba R100 after nearly 3 years of owning it without a single format due to the complexities of getting a working bootable CD-ROM drive.
This won't help those of you who have a non booting laptop but if yours is booting I used the following method to re-store my laptop with zero problems.
    1. Put the restore CDs into another computer and extract the Ghost image files "01131000.GHO" and "01131000.CRC" from disk 1 and "01131001.GHS" from disk 2.
    2. If your laptop has a second partition then transfer these files to a directory on your non windows partition. If not you will have to use partition magic to create one.
    3. Create a Norton Ghost boot disk from a retail version of Norton ghost and a Windows 98 Boot disk.
    4. Boot the Laptop from the Windows 98 Floppy disk, then swap disks and run Ghost.
    5. Select Local>Local Disk>From Image
    And select the 01131000.GHO file.
    6. Select the only image offered to you, then select the R100?s drive, and finally select the main boot partition.
    7. Hit go!
    8. Re-boot and follow the windows configuration and you're done.

  • How do I burn an iMovie using a bus super drive for mac book pro

I have a new mac book pro using the maverick operating system.  I also have a ubs super drive.  I am trying to burn an i movie to the dvd to be shown on a dvd player. It is saving as a mp4 and will not play in the dvd player.  How do I save the movie to play it in a dvd player.
    Thanks

For that you need iDVD. If you don't have it:
Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3673
To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

  • How to setup the security based on roles in Organization.

    Hi,
How to setup the security based on roles in Organization.
For example:Few users are Manager and a few user are Non Manager .Manager should have access to all work data including Non Manager and Non Manager should access based role. How to setup this? How OBI server identify the user role?
    kindly let me know.
    Regards.,
    CHR

    Hi,
You need to have Back End support to achieve this. In Back End you need to create two groups . You need to know what joins has to be made for which group (which is more important) and also make session variable for the userrole (with SQL supporting it). In the BMM layer, we need to put the security join conditions in the 'where clause'.
And make a common report. User loggin in with the respective userid will have userrole and joins assigned in the Back end. And they will be viewing the report according to their access.
Hope this will solve your problem.

  • Use time capsule drive for mass storage instead of time machine

I'm considering buying a new Airport Extreme with the time capsule drive.  I'd interested to know if I can use the built in drive as an additional HD verses using it for a back up drive with time machine?  I'm aware I can plug in a USB external drive for network storage, but would like to use the built one for storage as well.  Anyone know if this is possible?

I just got a 2TB time capsule a few days ago to use as a "poor man's file server" for my iTunes library. Bob makes valid points, and I am aware of the limitations, but I think it will meet my needs for awhile. I am in the process of ripping a large DVD collection and my iTunes library is over 350gb which was starting to feel crowded on my MBA's 512gb SSD.
I have plenty of external USB and thunderbolt drives, but I wanted wireless access to the libary anywhere in the house. With the AC wireless on my 2013 MBA, I wouldn't really classify the time capsule as "quite slow", I'm seeing about 30MB/s for FInder file copies. I have a 1TB USB2 WD Passport drive and the speed is very comparable - about 35MB/s. Sure, it's not as fast as my thunderbolt drive at 190MB/s or SSD at 700MB/s, but it seems to work well for my content (I don't use HD video in iTunes).
The only noticeable issue is that the TC disk spins down almost immediately if it isn't in use, so you get a lag of a few seconds if you pause a movie for a minute. And it takes longer to start iTunes of course. For me, these were acceptable trade-offs to allow my library to grow to 2TB without any directly connected external storage.
I wanted an AC router regardless and the TC gives me a wireless disk for $100 more. In the future I can always add a "real" media server and let the TC do backups. But for now I'm happy with the way it works.

    Hi Will,
Thanks for reply... Actually, I've tried that before(putting comma after the flag "all," presuming the 71st step shows that I should have 3 members in the memberset under the ICDatasrc dimension. But it also did not work.
Nope, step 71 did not tell us to use piping and consequently expanding the col key range.
