How to share raw partitions on Mac OS X Server ?

Hello,
I'm trying to build a RAC Database with 3 nodes. I have created 2 raw partitions for the OCR and CRS Voting Disk on the local hard drive of node 1.
I read the documentation concerning how to install a RAC Database on Mac OS X Server, but I don't know how to share the 2 raws partitions between my nodes.
Anyone could explain me how to share those raw partitions accross all nodes ?
Regards,
Bob

Good morning Bob,
I guess you refer the the linux firewire solution for rac. It would surprize me if that works for the mac since on linux they created special kernel modules for it to be able to run. When connecting 3 servers you would need a firewire switch. From what I have seen sofar, the mac mounts the firewire drives exclusively and the (linux)kernel modifictions change that to shared allowing multiple servers to connect.
For storage I would definately go for ASM. It makes you choice for storage hardware a bit less critical. Let oracle do what otherwise a highend SAN solution would do. Why are you building the RAC ? If it has a serious goal, get a xserve-RAID. I don't think you can get a better price/performance ratio. What other storage hardware do you have available ? (netapp would be fine ;-))
regards,
Ronald

To share your music with other accounts on the computer
    On Mac OS X
    1. Quit iTunes.
    2. Locate your iTunes Music Folder. It is stored by default in ~/Music/iTunes or ~/Documents/iTunes/.
These folders cannot be accessed by other accounts on the computer. In order for other users to be able to access your music, you must move it to a publicly accessible location.
The Public folder in your home directory (~/Public), or to another folder outside your home directory that other users have access to, such as /Users/Shared.
Tip: The tilde "~" refers to your home folder. For more information see Mac OS X: Using Your Home Directory.
    3. Drag the iTunes Music Folder to a publicly accessible location.
Important: Do not move the iTunes folder, the iTunes 4 Music Library file or the iTunes Library.xml file.
    4. Open iTunes.
    5. From the iTunes menu, choose Preferences.
    6. Click Advanced.
    7. Click the Change button.
    8. Navigate in the Change Music Folder Location dialog to the location of your iTunes Music folder.
    9. Click Choose.
Repeat these steps for each account that is sharing music with other users.
Note: If multiple users of a computer are storing music in one folder, duplicate song files are generated when a user imports music from CD that has already been imported by another user.

  • How to use RAW partition for Oracle for placing data?

    Dear all,
I have installed Oracle on a SUN machine and use database mount point /oracle which is a UFS system.
But now I would like to use RAW partition instead of a UFS system to place Oracle database data...
The installation guide mentions that database mount points have to be prepared before installation, could I just use /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s5 as database mount points after partitioning c0t0d0s5?
I am attempting to create a tablespace in the above partition... Could any experts tell me if the above works?
    Thanks a lot!

    kwan,
Raw partion is used to store Oracle data files and not Oracle software. Oracle home is going be in regular file system. More than one file can not share the same raw device.
You create the raw device at the OS level using the OS command. Then create tablespace on Oracle and use the clause DATAFILE 'Raw file Name'
    Hope this helps
    Best,
    G

  • How to create raw partition in a local zone?

I tried to search for an answer for my question, but I spent a week and still no luck.
What I am trying to do is to create raw partitions for Sybase in a local zone. I tried to add device and set match to the block and raw device.
However, when I tried to do "format", I got core dumped. When I did zpool create, I got permission denied. Any advice?
    zonecfg:z001> info
    zonename: z001
    zonepath: /export/ZONE/z001
    autoboot: true
    pool:
    limitpriv:
    fs:
    dir: /shared/tmp
    special: /tmp
    raw not specified
    type: lofs
    options: []
    net:
    address: 10.110.1.2
    physical: e1000g1
    device
    match: /dev/rdsk/c6t60060160DF2413003E2F0C2DF945DC11d0
    device
    match: /dev/dsk/c6t60060160DF2413003E2F0C2DF945DC11d0

You can't manipulate pools directly in a non-global zone. I'm not sure if you can run 'format'. You can use at least a limited amount of globbing. You might want to put a '*' at the end of your matched device name.
You can hand off a raw partition via 'match' and put it under UFS control, or with recent versions of Solaris Express, you can delegate a portion of a ZFS filesystem to the zone.
    See the ZFS administration guide:
    http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/zfs/docs/zfsadmin.pdf
Especially the section on using ZFS in a zone (page 171). Note the guide is for the most recent version of ZFS in OpenSolaris. Versions available in Solaris 10 may not have all the same features.

  • How to share documents between two macs,

I NEED TO SHARE documents between two macs....keynote dcts.....and I always want to be working with the last dct, what is the esiest and safer way to do it ?

Ok I have three macs sharing mobile me. One at work that´s a imac,at home my old Mack book Pro with a big monitor and now I got a beautiful Mac Book Air.
The two computers at home can be connected wireless,I have a time capsule disk that at this moment is only backing up my MBPro. I will use my MBA for everyday use, mails, navigating and for lecturing....with keynote. Basically the documents that I need to share daily will be keynote dcts. And may be some apperture projects.
All the mails calendars etc work beautiful with mobileme.
I don´t really need to conect the imac at work.
Any ideas to make things easy?
If I work only wit dcts does are about 400 KB. If I use my folder of preentations is about 42 GB, I think I just need to work with dcts....

  • How to spare my HD with Mac OS X Server v10.5 Leopard?

    Hi there,
I just got my iMac few days ago. I have install Mac OS X Server v10.5 Leopard problem.
Its any could teach me how can I spare my Hard Drive to show 2 in my desktop, one will be Application App & another will be Storage..
Its "Mac OS X Server v10.5 Leopard"(computer version) can only use on new mac??

Ohhh... Okay... You want to partition your hard drive.
    Instructions can be found here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61301
You must do this while booted from the OS X install DVD and choosing Disk Utility from the Utilties menu. Also be aware that you must back your data prior to changing the partition scheme, as it will reformat the hard drive.

  • Share DVD-RW with mac os x server 10.4.7

    Hello,
i've an iBook G3 with Mac OS X Server 10.4.7 installed and a LaCie DVD-RW attached. Is it possible to share and mount the DVD drive through internet and burn data that i've on a PowerBook G4 connected to the same network, with Toast or iTunes?
    thank you
PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   the last one PowerBook, 1 Go RAM

    Hi
Personally I do not have mush experience with netboot
The 10.4.7 DVD you purchased is possibly the Intel version of OS X Server?
I would run the combo updater to bring your 10.4.0 version up to the latest and then see if netboot works
You can download the updater from here-
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxserver10410comboupdateuniversal.htm l
    Edit-
Whoops you will need the 10.4.7 combo update first before using the above updater, get it here-

  • How to install previous version of Mac OS X Server

I had to downgrade my comp from Maverick back to Snow Leopard. Now I can not install Mac OS  X Server. App store only offering me Maverick version.
    Please advice.
    Cheers,
       Andrei

Snow Leopard and Snow Leopard Server  both predate the App Store and related software downloads.
Snow Leopard Server (OS X Server 10.6) was generally available only via DVD distribution, and there were only specific versions produced; you'd need a version that supports your particular system, or to use the streaming update to get from client Snow Leopard to Snow Leopard Server (if your system requires a later version and can't boot the server DVD directly).
Your options here are to roll in your backups, or to roll in Snow Leopard Server from either your server-specific DVD distro or from a retail Snow Leopard Server DVD distribution.
If you no longer have your distribution, you might find a Snow Leopard Server distro from the used market — you'll need a license key to activate it, and you'll want the retail distribution and not the server-specific version — or maybe directly from Apple Support folks.  If you were licensed for Snow Leopard Server and had purchased directly from Apple, then you might be able to call Apple Support and get access to what you had, too.
It used to be that the per-system DVD disks around that era were grey, and the so-called retail disks — which is what you want, if you don't have your own grey disks for your system — were black.  I don't have any retail Snow Leopard Server DVDs handy to confirm that coloration, though.

  • How to create another partition on mac and restore from time machine

I want to create another partition on my macbook running on OS X Yosemite. I want to recover a time machine back up on this partition. Basically this is a backup of my other old PC which I saved on a time machine external hard disk and now I want to create it as a new separate partition which I can log into to as opposed to continuous to connected to it via USB.
Any advise on how I can do that?

    Hi Patrick,
Thanks for the that great tip.
In that time machine back up I have some applications for e.g. MS office etc and I wanted it to be like a virtual machine as such that I launch when I want to use the applications, see my data etc....I have bought parallels as that allows you to have multiple virtual machines on your laptop whether these are multiple mac images as time machine backups or linux, Microsoft Windows 7, 8 etc....
Thats what I eventually want to do here...
This feature that you provided is also of good reference for me in future.

  • How to clone bootcamp partition on Mac?

    Hello!
I currently have a 200GB bootcamp partition on my 2TB internal iMac hard drive. I want more space for my windows partition. I have a spare 500GB Hard drive laying around, and was wondering if there was a way that I could clone the bootcamp partition from my iMac onto that drive. I'd still want it to be bootable. That way I could have an extra 300GB of space without sacrificing my internal HD. Is there an easy way to do this? Thanks!
    Thomas

Mac OS Yosemite and Win8.1 on external Thunderbolt/USB 3 drive.
    How to:
Remember before you start: Make sure you have updated backups on everything involved, unmount all not necessary drives. during the different stages unmount the drive not working on i.e. if you are doing things on the  external unmount the internal. Take your time and be sure to choose the right drive and partition so you don’t mess everything up.
    1. Update all Mac OS updates from Mac App Store.
    2. Run Boot Camp on internal (original) drive, including make a USB stick drivers for Win (Can take forever on a slow USB stick, but will get there) Install Windows from DVD or similar (I did from a bought DVD, no OEM allowed)
    3. Test-run and configure and add all updates for Windows and installing an Antivirus app is also good to do.
    4. Install a new fresh Mac OS on an external USB or Thunderbolt drive (or use CarbonCopyCloner to get a copy of internal Mac OS)
    5. Check the new external Mac OS by rebooting to it. if Ok, reboot to internal again.
    6. Run WinClone 4 and make an image file from the Boot Camp to an image file to your desktop.
    7. Run Disk Utility and select your external drive, Choose the Partition tab, click the + below the main (only partition), select the space between the now two partitions and drag upp or down until lower parts size is at least a tad bigger than the original Boot Camp volume or bigger. Select the new partition and rename it and choose to format it to MS-DOS FAT. Execute.
    8. Run WinClone again and choose your new image-file, and target your new FAT-partition on the external drive.
    9. Reboot the Mac, and when screen goes black, press and hold the alt-button until the startup drives is shown, select the new Windows disk on your external drive. If all ok your computer will start on Windows on your external drive. When running Windows goto your USB-stick open the Boot Camp folder and run the setup.exe.
When all seems to work ok reboot again and this time to your internal Mac OS.
    10. When in your internal Mac OS, run the Boot Camp app again and make sure only the Remove Win8xx is checked, run and the Boot Camp will be removed on your Mac drive.
    Check-run everything agan.
Thats how I did it, might be easier way but at least I’m a happy camper now :-)
So now I have the options to run Mac OS on my internal drive, run Mac OS on my external together with Parallels Desktop and Windows 8.1 in a virtual or just run Windows only on the external drive (best for gaming etc in windows)

  • How to share apps on 2 Macs with the same Apple ID ?

    Hi,
I got a new iMac (2013 - Mavericks), and I gave my old one (2010 - Lion) to my husband. I've downloaded some new games on the Apple Store with my Apple ID for my new Mac, and it works fine. But when my husband wants to install them on his Mac, when he types the password for my Apple ID, it doesn't work, it says "wrong user/password"...
It seems that once I've activated my Apple ID on my new Mac, it prevented the old one to use it ?? The Home Sharing is turned on, but apparently it only concerns iTunes (music, etc), but not the NEW apps from the App Store. Everything new on my Mac can't be shared with the old Mac.
What can I do ? We don't want to create a new Apple ID for my husband, because we don't want to lose what there is already on his old Mac (we use the same music, games, apps, etc).
    Thanks for your help.

    Welcome to the Apple community.
If we means 2, then you are best keeping seperate accounts. What you need to do is share photo stream albums with the other.

  • How to share iTunes on a Mac with iTunes on XP

I gave my wife an iPhone for her birthday. Unfortunately she has to sync it with her Outlook on her work laptop (XP). She wants to load music and movies that we have on our Mac's at home.
Problem is that the iPhone can only be synced with one computer without wiping out the content from the other.
Before I start moving files with an external drive to her Lap-Top PC (XP).
I am wandering if its possible to share the library when she is connected to our home network.
This would make life much easier
I know its no problem to share the iTunes library among Mac's in our home network. Its this lone PC that wants to enjoy our vast iTunes library!

  • How to convert RAW files that saved in UCCX server to wav file?

    Hi all,
How we can covert the RAW files that are saved in UCCX server to wav file by using command prompt in UCCX servers. Or is there some other way? So that we should be able to hear the sound of these files.
    C:\Program Files\Cisco\Desktop_Audio
    Regards
    Ali Raza

    Hi,
I use Switch File Audio Convertor from NCH Software to do this.
It is a commercial product but there is a time limited evaluation and if you decide to keep it it is only $30.
    http://www.nch.com.au/switch/index.html
It is great for converting audio files to the correct format for music on hold as well.
