How to test if FTP Proxy is working?

My goal is to enable a colleague to use my machine via an FTP proxy. But first I want to make sure I've got the setup working locally before I attempt an outside connection.
Machine 1: Mac laptop running 10.6.6, IP 192.168.1.10, connected wirelessly
Machine 2: Mac mini running 10.6.4, IP 192.168.1.11, connected wirelessly
Step 1:
On Machine 1, run ssh -ND 8080 [email protected]; type in password and it seems fine
Step 2:
On Machine 1, in System Preferences | Network | Advanced | Proxies check FTP Proxy. Enter 192.168.1.11 and port 8080. Leave PASV mode turned on. Click ok, then click Apply.
Then I fire up YummyFTP, connect to a site and begin downloading a file. I have MenuMeters installed so I can see the large file coming down on Machine 1 via the network meter. On Machine 2, however, which also has MenuMeters installed, I see no similar activity.
This makes me think that what I've done isn't working — at all. That wouldn't surprise me, since I've never done this before and I'm not entirely sure that what I've done is going to pass through port 21 traffic.
Am I approaching this the correct way? Does anyone have any hints as to where to go from here?

Ok, resolved this another way. Instead of using OS X's built in proxy, I used the proxy of the FTP client. After connecting to the remote server, I see transfers show up in the meters of Machine 1 and Machine 2.
Also, I moved to SFTP instead of FTP. One blog post indicated that FTP for some reason cannot be proxied.

    iCal Server email invitations - how to test and get this feature working
    Thanks Apple for introducing this nice little feature into iCal but then completely neglecting to write any sort of useful manual that can explain what to do when it doesn't work after you set it up for the first time.
    At long, long last we have finally got there after about 6 months of fiddling on and off, so I thought I had better post up the process since many have similar issues and it is hard to ascertain what is going on.
    Using an external email server was just a waste of time and it still wouldn't handle the replies properly even though it was supposed to handle '+addressing'. In the end I set up a special gmail account for the iCal server and finally got it working. I list here the process of configuring and testing the system to check that each little stage is working.
    Set up a Gmail account in Apple Mail to access and test in the usual way for any email account (e.g. [email protected].);
    Set the iCal server email to access the same email using the following settings:
    IMAP
    SMTP
    [email protected]
    smtp.gmail.com
    Port: 993 [x] Use SSL
    Port: 587 [x] Use SSL
    User & Pwd
    Login
    User & Pwd
    To test the settings:
    send out a test email from Apple Mail to a non-server email address that you can access to check it has been received;
    send out a test email from your non-server email account to [email protected] and check that it is received;
    this tells you that the GMail account is setup correctly and working
    Testing iCal:
    I noted that iCal was deleting any emails that arrive in the inBox in Apple Mail as soon as they arrived (this is to be expected);
    test that the invites are being sent from iCal by setting an event in iCal and inviting your non-server address (you may not see any sign of this in Apple Mail but you should catch it in the iCal server log and possibly in the Gmail sent mail box);
    check that the invite is received at your non-server account and Accept it in iCal on another machine - the reply is automatically sent back;
    the replies appear in Apple Mail but are quickly deleted by iCal. But their record for you to see is left in Gmail under 'All Mail';
    Accepted invites appear as a notification button on the top left hand bar on iCal where you click to acknowledge them and then the attendee is shown as a green circled tick instead of a grey circled ?.
    this shows that iCal invitations are working correctly. Whenever an event is updated, all invitees should be updated by email automatically.
    I hope this helps anyone - I could certainly have done with something similar when I started with looking at this.

    The Error and Access logfile in the Server app under iCal server are very useful in determining any errors. I got lots of imip errors when I didn't quite have the settings right. The port is critical and it won't tell you this is the problem if it fails.

  • How to get the FTP clients to work?

    This is something that (to me at least) should be trivial but I just can't
    get it to work at all.
    How do you get an FTP client to work?
    I've tried several GUI clients as well as the terminal FTP command and they
    all seem to get stuck entering passive mode - according to the log entries
    they send the command.... And then nothing or a timeout, the following is
    from the terminal FTP command:
    Titania:~ susan$ ftp ftp.apple.com
    Trying 17.254.16.11...
    Connected to ftp.apple.com.
    220 17.254.16.11 FTP server ready
    Name (ftp.apple.com:susan): anonymous
    331 Anonymous login ok, send your complete email address as your password.
    Password:
    230 Anonymous access granted, restrictions apply.
    Remote system type is UNIX.
    Using binary mode to transfer files.
    ftp> ls
    501 EPSV: Operation not permitted
    227 Entering Passive Mode (17,254,16,11,223,157).
    200 PORT command successful
    421 Service not available, remote server timed out. Connection closed
    ftp>
    In my System Preferences -> Network panel in the Proxies tab, I have the
    "use Passive FTP mode (PASV) checked.
    I also have checked the FTP firewall option (but I think that is only if I'm
    acting as an FTP server).
    I am connected to the internet via a Netgear wireless router.
    I also have an old Windows laptop that also uses the same wireless router
    and it can FTP quite happily!!!!!
    Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
    Susan

    ejn - thanks for your continued assistance.
    I've tried turning the firewall off but this does not appear to make any difference(*). Also, I have Parallels installed and I'm sharing the internet connection with this (even though Parallels itself is not currently running). Turning this sharing off doesn't seem to change anything either.
    I have noticed some entries in the ifpw.log file that coincide with some of the ftp actions. Given the following terminal session:
    Titania:~ susan$ ftp ftp.apple.com
    Trying 17.254.16.10...
    Connected to ftp.apple.com.
    220 17.254.16.10 FTP server ready

    200 PORT command successful
    421 Service not available, remote server timed out. Connection closed
    ftp>
    at the time the "200 PORT command successful" is displayed, the ifpw log starts showing:

    which makes sense as the system tries to go for an active transfer.
    (*) Actually, while I've been writing this, I've been playing on the terminal as well. I've found the combination of:
    1) turning off the firewall
    2) starting ftp
    3) issuing the 'passive' command to turn off passive mode
    4) issuing 'ls' etc. works
    Looks like I've not been waiting long enough for the ftp client to get sick of trying the passive transfer and switching to an active one with the firewakk turned off!
    Still doesn't answer the question - why does passive mode not work?

  • SFTP/FTP Proxy Problems - Works for DMZ but not for Internet Hosts?!

    Hi together,
    we have a strange problem with our TMG Proxy, some infrastructure informations first
    So we have the Client LAN with the IP range 192.168.11.x which is routeable to Server LAN 192.168.3.x but not to DMZ LAN 192.168.200.x.. The TMG is a 2 Node Array, 192.168.200.5 is the DMZ VIP. TMG DMZ IP Adress (192.168.200.5) and physical Adresses have
    an NAT relation to one Public IP. HTTPS Inspection is active. We dont use (and dont want to) the TMG Client component.
    When i use WinSCP, Putty or Filezilla and connect to a DMZ LAN Host (192.168.200.x) with "HTTP Proxy" (192.168.3.108:8080) everything is fine, it works like expected...
    When i connect to an Internet Host it fails regardless which protocol i use - ftp, sftp or ssh. The error i get is
    "The token supplied to the function is invalid."

    Hi Keith,
    ok i found out the problem is https inspection is enabled....
    - when i disable https inspection for source, same problem
    - when i disable https inspection for destination, problem solved
    the root cause why this worked is we had https inspection disabled for dmz destinations.
    there is no direct route relation between the lan and dmz.
    why is source exception not working in this?

  • How to test my SOAP Servicer is working?

    Hi...
    I'm developing a server and client SOAP from the saaj-simple.war example.
    I modified and it doesn't work but I can not identify which are wrong the server or client SOAP.
    I think the problem is in the urlEndpoint, in my case the client should call to:
    http://localhost:8080/indas400/servlet/con.indas.soap.SOAPReceiver
    this is the URL where the server soap is.
    Could you suggest me any idea to test the client and server independently?
    Thanks a lot.

  • Can't get FTP proxy to work

    All of my FTP traffic is proxied through a Windows server
    running Squid (on port 3128). I can connect to my server using ftp
    with explorer, WS_FTP, and Filezilla. However, when I set my proxy
    server in Contribute, I cannot connect. Any ideas folks?

    As a first step, try switching on Contribute logging to see
    if that will provide any helpful info:

  • How to call a text FTP proxy service from a Java client ?

    Greetings,
    I've configured a text FTP proxy service which downloads files from a FTP server. It pols a directory on the FTP server and, as soon as a file respecting a given pattern apears it is downloaded. I tested the service in the test console and by putting some test files onto the FTP server. Now, I need to be able to test it from a Java client. How may I do that ? I need to write a Java client to connect to the OSB and to tell to it to use the FTP proxy in order to download a given file, from a given location and to put it in a given location on the client machine. Many thanks in advance for any help. A sample would be great !
    Kind regards,
    Nicolas

    Ok, I understand. The crucial question here is "what is a caller that you refer to?"
    Don't get me wrong, but the problem here is that you probably don't understand, what OSB is good for. OSB is an event-driven system. The event in your case is a new message in remote FTP server. You have to define what should happen when that event is fired. And that's all. You don't have to involve other client (or caller) for this case.
    You should define your FTP proxy to retrieve all relevant files from FTP server and then you should route them based on their name/content/encoding/whatever to different consumers. You can also have many proxies if you want - one for each name. It's up to you. But you don't have any "callers" in either case.

  • How to test server proxy in ECC 6.0 ?

    Hi,
    Please tell me how to test server proxy created in SPROXY of ECC 6.0  .
    I am following this blog XI: Debug your inbound ABAP Proxy implementation .
    When i am executing the test service provider i am getting an error with " program terminated " message  creating a dump .
    How to test it through this method ? Is there any other way to test in ECC6.0
    Thanks,
    Laawanya D

    Hi,
    I have put a breakpoint in my proxy code and when i am trying to execute only, i am getting the error "Program terminated" .
    I am using ECC6.0 , so when i am clicking on Test Interface, i am not  getting  "Application Data Entry" parameters  as given in  Stefan's blog , but I am getting something like:
    Input:
    1.Generate template Data
    2.Enforce Stylesheet generation
    (I have checked both 1 & 2 .)
    Error Handling:
    1.Don't catch Application faults
    if i check this and execute , my program gets terminated , leaving a dump and if i dont set it also My program gets terminated .
    So what to do now ?

  • How to test Java Proxy Classes in Portal

    I have created a Java Project in NWDS and have added Java Proxy classes for BAPI_EMPLOYEE_GETDADA. I have created a main class to call the Java Proxy Classes.
    I have noticed that I can not export it as .PAR file so I exported it as .JAR file. Now I logged into my Portal Server to test this new Java Proxy class but I do not see the .JAR file that I had created. Do I need to explicitly import it into Portal Server (I was thinking that similar to .PAR files, .JAR file will get transferred to the portal server automatically upon chosing Export from NWDS)
    I am also not sure if I can create JAVA iView based on the .JAR file.
    Please advise me on how can I test my Java Proxy Class.
    Thanks a lot in advance.

    Hi,
    You can try with HTTP as sender. Send a HTTP request using HTTP Client code and check out the response.
    For HTTP, sender communication channel is not required. All other steps in Configuration will be similar to any simple scenario.

    Hello there,
    I'm currently dealing with a problem regarding PI 7.40 file adapter and our proxy server. We have installed our pi system within our LAN behind two DMZ's. So we need to use the ftp-proxy function. But when I try to send a file useing this communication channel I'll geht the following error:

    Is there anyway to use this type of ftp-proxy string within the pi configuration:

    I have already found this note but I also found the note

  • How do I get my RMI Proxy to work

    Hi there
    I have created a nice RMI callback server and client - that works fine.
    The server and client has to be able to run on seperate LAN's - LAN A and LAN B. The server is on LAN A and the client is on LAN B - furthermore I have a PC with connected to both LAN A and B on two different network adapters.
    In order to make the server and client communicate - I have made a RMI proxy that implements both the server and client interface. Normally you specify that the RMI server should use LAN A or B by specifying the java.rmi.server.hostname property.
    The problem is that the proxy only works on the LAN matching the specified java.rmi.server.hostname property. It seems the client also depends on the java.rmi.server.hostname property - probably because I use a callback implementation
    Any suggestions to how I solve this ?

    A url in Bug# 4880793 led me to a solution proposed by Peter Jones - JavaSoft East.
    Well for some reason the java.rmi.server.hostname affects how all sockets are created by the RMI factories.
    In order to control which adapter to use manually you will have to your create your own socket factories:
    import java.io.*;
    import java.net.*;
    import java.rmi.server.*;
    import javax.net.*;
    public class MyClientSocketFactory implements RMIClientSocketFactory, Serializable {
    private final String aCorrectHost;
    public MyClientSocketFactory(String host) {
    aCorrectHost = host;
