How to trap F1 (help) when "Tools - Options" is active

Hi there. I already posted this question previously with no appropriate response. I wouldn't normally post it again but I'm justifiably losing my patience. I can find no way to trap F1 (help) when someone activates my program's options via "Tools
-> Options". This is supported in add-ins via "EnvDTE.IDTToolsOptionsPage.OnHelp()" but after spending countless hours hunting for how to do this in a VSPackage (spinning my wheels for days now), I have yet to find an answer. Would someone
from MSFT care to enlighten me on how to pull this off. I simply need to intercept F1 so I can launch a ".chm" file when my options are showing under "Tools -> Options". Thank you.

Hi Ed,
Thanks very much for your response. I'll look into this and hopefully there's something that can be done. Am anxiously looking forward to your own results as well. I have looked into other possibilities however, like overriding "DialogPage.OnActivate()"
and trying to set the focus to my options page, where I then have control (so trapping F1 would be easy). This isn't doable either though based on my testing. Changing the bindings to intercept "Help.F1Help" is also fraught with problems. Both these
ideas are hacks though, as would be trying to get underneath Visual Studio to trap F1 before it even gets control. Integrating my help into MSHelp isn't something I want to do either, not just because of the work involved, but because of the nature of my app.
My ".chm" file contains the help for my add-in (now VSPackage) as well as a standalone ".exe" that goes with it (which is run independently of VS). A single ".chm" file therefore serves both programs so two help systems isn't
viable. Note that even though add-ins will soon be obsolete, I honestly find it bewildering that MSFT would force developers to use their help system given that add-ins supported "EnvDTE.IDTToolsOptionsPage.OnHelp()". There should be an analogue
for this in a VSPackage since it's so basic. There's enough work involved having to convert an add-in to a VSPackage while still supporting older versions of VS (many programmers now have to deal with both depending on the version), but the fact that a VSPackage
doesn't even seem to support everything an add-in did (F1 in this case), means that MSFT has created difficult and expensive problems for many developers. This isn't directed at you of course (your help is certainly welcome and greatly appreciated), but I'm
at a loss to understand the business rationale for this. It may be easier for MSFT to deal with one system only now (VSPackages instead of add-ins), but it hurts many of its existing customers who have to deal with the fallout of this decision And honestly,
I see no immediate advantage to VSPackages over add-ins. Like so many other technologies before it, it's just a different way to do the same thing (both have their pros and cons). I'm not here to rant though, but it's just the frustration of having to spend
weeks on this one issue alone, in addition to all the other work required to convert an add-in to a VSPackage. I've had a stable, working add-in for years now and am being forced to convert it to a VSPackage with all the ensuing problems (time, expense, need
to support both technologies now, add-ins and VSPackages, as well as unknown future problems, etc). At the end of the day though, my customers will see no difference in the program. So what was the point of going through this exercise. I (and many others no
doubt) are going through this grief only because MSFT has given us no choice.

    Dear support,
Now, my office use Firefox as default browser to access WebServer. And there are some policy that users must use ProxyServer. I do not want user change proxy setting in Firefox. How to disable Setting button in Tools - Options - Advanced - Network from windows registry?
    Thank you.

You can not use the Windows registry to disable items in Firefox. This link shows how to lock down Firefox proxy settings, change the values to suit your needs:
    http://www.stbernard.com/ip5kb/iPrism/WhatsNew/50SupportFiles/SupportFiles/IP0460.htm
One minor variation, in step 4 instead of adding that line to all-js, you can create a file called ''local-settings.js'' containing the line shown and save the file in the same folder as all.js

You can disable or remove that button, but that won't prevent users from making the changes on the about:config page directly.<br />
You can lock the related network.proxy prefs if you do not want users to change the connection settings.

  • My home pages do not load as saved. When I close Firefox what ever is up in the tabs comes up again when I reopen Firefox. I know how to set it up in tools/options but it is not working properly....Bug???

This is not my first time using Firefox...It has always worked on previous versions. I have just downloaded 4.0. Is this a known bug with Firefox 4.0 ??

In case you use "Clear history when Firefox closes" or otherwise clear history:
*do not clear the Browsing History
*Tools > Options > Privacy > Firefox will: "Use custom settings for history": [X] "Clear history when Firefox closes" > Settings
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/remove-recent-browsing-search-and-download-history
Clearing "Site Preferences" clears all exceptions for cookies, images, pop-up windows, software installation, passwords, and other website specific data.

  • 8.6.1 HELP and TOOLS- OPTIONS not working

Hi,  after installing 8.6.1 I'm not able to access help for any function, except on tookit functions.  The context help works, but there is no detailed help (except Toolkit functions).  If I access LabVIEW help, the window shows the tree on the right, but when I click on any of the items no help appears in the window on the right.
Also when I click on tools->options it searches for <helpdir>\_launchhelp.vi which it never finds, so I cannot change any of LabVIEW's options either.
I installed using the Developer Suite DVD's, I do not think there was an explicit option to select Help.  I installed to D:\program files, would it be an issue if you don't install to C:?
I uninstalled previous versions before installing 8.6.1.
    Any ideas?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hello,
It seems you're installation in corrupt to some extent.
You can repair you're installation by going to: Control panel->Software->National Instruments. Then you get a dialog in which you can select LabVIEW 8.6.1 and REPAIR.
If it still doesn't work, you can always contact your local sales office for support.

I was in the process of taking a course on CANS a few days ago. Today when I tried to return using the same email address and password, I was told that the password was incorrect. The password is the same as it was when I was using it previously. I tried to get help to reset the password but I did not get a response through email. So PLEASE help ASAP.

  • Firefox closes when "tools"+ "options" clicked & won`t respond to Typed URLs but ok with "bookmarked"urls

Investigating why FF was using so much memory I was advised to use "Restore Firefox" button.
Did that but now I can`t use "tools" "options" `cos it closes the browser. Other menus under "tools" work OK.
If I try to download any updates for plug-ins etc the FF browser closes down.
Can`t browse my images folders to add to interactive sites.....closes down FF
Can type a URL but nothing happens but if I enter a "bookmarked" url or a "history" url then it is OK
    Firefox is 16.0.1
    Any help appreciated please.

Thanks for your response.Unfortunately when I try to download '''anything''' my browser closes so I can`t reinstall Firefox.
Many of the fixes say "go to Tools & Options" but when I click on Options the browser again closes.
I seem to have lost access to IE some while ago and have been using Firefox OK up until recently, but then my computer started to go very slow and the Task Manager keeps showing 100% usage of the CPU.
When I start the pc with only the desktop displaying, the CPU usage is 60-70% and around 35 processes are running. Is this normal?
When I open Firefox the usage increases rapidly until the CPU shows 100%.
It was while resetting Firefox to try and sort this usage problem that I lost my download ability and the use of "tools" then "options" and also urls that are typed in.(bookmarks & history ok)
    Any advice welcome.

  • Help Authoring Tool Options & Enhancements

I have been using RoboHelp x5 since 2005. For this year's
budget meeting I have to provide options/cost comparison on other
tools that are available. One thing that is of crucial importance
is that my background is not in computer/technical (no can do code,
scripting, etc), which is why RoboHelp was chosen in the first
    place.
    1) Can anyone offer an "addon products" to use with RoboHelp
(i.e. to enhance search function, etc)
    2) Can anyone offer any advice (pros and/or cons) about any
of the following Help Author Tools?
    • AuthorIT
    • Doc-To-Help
    • chm2web
    • FAR
    • Help & Manual
    • Help Generator
    • HelpConsole 2008
    • HelpNDoc
    • HelpServer
    • HelpStudio
    • HelpTron
    • HyperText Studio
    • Macrobject Word-2-CHM
    • Macrobject Word-2-Web
    • MadCap Flare
    • Mif2Go
    • WinCHM
Any assistance will be MUCH appreciated!
    Cindi

    Hi, Cindi,
If you're an experienced RoboHelp user and happy with the
output that you're getting with it then I would question the
benefit of switching to another help authoring tool. This may be
necessary in some circumstances —- for example, if you need
to output your help content in a format that RoboHelp does not
support, such as Microsoft Help 2.0 -— but for the most part
the time and effort required to learn the new tool and convert your
existing content for use with it will outweigh the benefits of
    switching to it.
Here are a few notes on the tools you listed.
    > chm2web
    > Help Generator
    > HelpConsole 2008
    > HelpNDoc
    > HelpServer
    > HelpTron
    > Macrobject Word-2-CHM
    > Macrobject Word-2-Web
    > WinCHM
I see little or no mention of these tools in any of the
Help-related forums that I frequent. This isn't necessarily a bad
thing, of course, but I believe it indicates that few professional
help authors are using them. I'd expect the cheaper of these tools
to provide few or no editing facilities, and in some cases they may
be designed to perform a single, very specific function, such as
compiling a set of existing HTML files into a .chm file.
    > FAR
This is an excellent tool for performing search-and-replace
operations across a set of HTML files and compiling them into a
.chm file or Help 2.0 file. It provides no facilities for creating
and maintaining your topic content, however, so you should really
only view it as a potentially useful add-on to RoboHelp.
    > Mif2Go
This is like WebWorks Publisher (not on your list): an
application that takes source content authored with Adobe
FrameMaker and converts it into a number of different help formats.
If you've already authored a lot of content with RoboHelp then
moving it into FrameMaker and setting up the Mif2Go or WebWorks
templates appropriately could be a big undertaking.
    > HyperText Studio
This was up-and-coming five or ten years ago but, for
whatever reason, it seems to have dropped completely from view
(though I'm aware that it is still for sale).
    > HelpStudio
This is a quite heavy-duty application that appears to be
more popular with software developers than with full-time help
authors. A "lite" version is now being given away with Visual
    Studio.
    > AuthorIT
    > Doc-To-Help
    > Help & Manual
    > MadCap Flare
These are all significant players. I've used AuthorIT only
and, while it's certainly a powerful tool, the learning curve is
    quite steep.
You can read detailed reviews of many of these applications
at the Writers UA site (
    http://www.writersua.com).

  • How mak an iMacro to toggle Tools Options Content Colors Allow Pages Own Colors

Every day in Firefox I go back and forth repeatedly, enabling my own System Colors, then going back to "Allow pages to choose their own colors".
I've tried to create an iMacro to do this, but apparently I haven't leaned iMacros correctly, because none of the several times I've tried it have worked.
Can someone write the macro for me, or tell me what the steps of the iMacro should be?
The two setting I want to toggle are:
Tools > Options > Content* > Colors > Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above
    and
Tools > Options > Content* > Colors > [uncheck] Allow pages to choose their own colors, instead of my selections above
    * I always leave Content selected in the Tools > Options window, specifically so I can do the above series without having to mouse-click on Content
    Thanks!

hello, you could simply try it with an add-on like https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/toggledocumentcolors-198916/

  • Firefox crashes on start up how do I get help when I can't even load it

Please can someone help me I am running Mozilla Firefox 7 but have been unable to even get to start it up. Every time I try I get a crash report box pop up but it doesn't tell me anything, it doesn't even have a crash ID. I can't even get it to load in safe mode and I can't even get the Firefox location bar up to submit anything about my crash so I am at a loss at what to try next. I have uninstalled then re-installed but to no avail, please can somebody help me !!?. If you need me to tell you anything else please don't hesitate to ask.

Since a few days we have a lot of crashes with [http://www.trusteer.com/product/trusteer-rapport Trusteer Rapport]. If you have this program, try to disable it and see if that stops the crashing.<br>
You can stop Rapport using Start Menu > Programs > Trusteer Rapport > Stop Rapport<br>
You can ask their helpdesk when an updated version of their product will be made available or, if you don't need this software, uninstall it.<br>
    http://www.trusteer.com/support/en/report-problem<br>
If you do not have Rapport, then we need to have a crash report ID. When you send Mozilla a crash report it just puts it in a giant database. We have no way of looking it up without the Report ID. I have no idea what is wrong without looking up the crash report. Please get the Report ID of your latest crash report.<br>

  • How do I get help when no updated browser can load a particular site,"can't find server,"

In recent weeks, possibly coinciding with updates in Firefox (running 3.6.10), Safari and iTunes, I have only received the prompt, "can't find server" when attempting to connect to the site below. Others can get it on their computers in other places, and my iPhone can access when on 3G, but our network here seems affected because all the computers [All macs, some laptops and some desktops, running on OS 10.5.8] here receive this message. I used to be able to go to this site, a radio station, and stream audio or download podcasts. My ISP ran a ping test to the site's server and said that went through, but the browsers don't seem to be able to make the transformation to anything I can read. What kind of a problem is this? Apple was no help either.

Well, it's very interesting that without my doing anything else, last Friday, kcrw.com mysteriously APPEARED when I went to it. This happened in Safari, too. It loads and I can stream the audio (with the Flash update). No explanation, really.
I had checked the protocols, but everything was default. It took all week for the change; so I can't believe that my tinkering (which was really only checking and doing nothing) was the cause of the reappearance.
