How to use FileVault on second internal drive with user-folder?!

I've a problem that has not solved yet.
My MBP early 2011 with OS X Lion 10.7.5 has instead the SuperDrive two internal harddiskdrives:
The "System"-Drive (128 GB SSD) for nothing else than the MacOSX installation/applications, and the "User"-Drive (500 GB classic HDD) for all my data and my user-folder. (Yes, I moved it via Terminal commands from "System" to "User").
All works fine, but I am only allowed to encrypt the "System"-Drive via FileVault2. The "User"-Drive is not supported by FileVault2.
I tried to encrypt it with the Terminal commands:
diskutil cs convert /Volumes/WD-Blue -passphrase
(Note: "WD-Blue" is the name of the "User"-Drive)
After confirming the new passphrase, it should be encrypting my "User"-Drive. In the HardDiskDrive-Utility is this hdd converted into a "Mac OS Extended (Journaled, encrypted)". So far, so good
But, now the big problem:
After rebooting the MBP, it is not possible to login.
"An error has occured with this user" (or similar)
I have to reboot, hold CMD+R, and deselect in the HDD-Utility the HDD-Protection, and decrypt this drive with the known passphrase.
After this "correction", all works fine, but without the encryption...
So... any ideas, how to protect the second hdd with my user-folder, without losing my data, because I think, when the second one has been deleted and the new format is "Mac OS Extended (Journaled, encrypted)", it won't solve my problem, because my user-folder is not on the "System"-Drive.

I solved my problem by inform myself...
Here is the solution to encrypt the second internal drive, without losing data, if your user-folder is on the second one (and not on SYSTEM). I will type "WD-Blue" in this example. You have to type in your drivename, that you want to encrypt.
Please note, that modifying your system this way is at your own risk!
Add new user in the ucp with admin-permissions
logout your user
login as new user (admin)
be sure, that no file on the second drive is in use
open terminal
type diskutil list to see your drives
type diskutil cs convert /Volumes/WD-Blue -passphrase YOURPASSWORD
Terminal should encrypt your drive. To check the status type diskutil cs list
If the amount of bytes the same, the drive has been encrypted
So, now still use terminal and type (after encryption has been accomplished):
curl https://raw.github.com/jridgewell/Unlock/master/install.sh | bash
Follow the promts and enter your given password for the encrypted drive (i.e. for "WD-Blue")
Exit terminal and reboot
Done
This way works fine. My user-folder is still on WD-Blue (2nd Drive) and the hdd is encrypted without losing my files.

How can I make the second internal drive bootable drive bootable for trouble shooting?

I suspect that a newly installed SSD boot drive may be causing instability in my new 2012 Mac Mini Server. The logic board and RAM have been replaced and boot drive wiped and partitioned and 10.10.2 reinstalled. A quick addendum: your Mac will have a default boot drive set, and if not then it will choose the first one it identifies on the disk (usually the first partition on the first disk, followed by subsequent partitions on this disk, and then moving to the second identified disk, etc.). As a result, if you have to hold Option to select your second boot drive, the next time you restart, your Mac will boot back to the first drive. To make the second boot drive the default one, you will need to select it in the Startup Disk system preferences. This will update the hardware to use this as the default boot drive.

Proper "Formatting" of second internal drive with Disc Utility??

Using a second internal HD for data storage, was formated 4 months ago with default settings from Disc Utility. When I called the drive manufacturer today about corrupted Photoshop files (10 in 4 months) occuring on this drive, they recommended that I backup, Erase and Format as MAC OS Extended "NOT" Journaled.
Before I start - any comments, recommendations??
Would "Journaled" or "Not Journaled" actually cause corruption in 150mb Photoshop files??

I'd run Disk Utility and have a look at the disks; I'd look to verify the volume structures.
Journaled HFS+ is the default for installations, too.
Formatting usually doesn't help with disk hardware that is going wonky. Bad blocks are bad blocks, and failing disks tend to have increasing numbers of bad blocks. Reformatting a failing disk "papers over" the bad blocks, at least until the next crop of bad blocks arises and corrupts something else.
Formatting does help if there's a corruption in the volume structure.
Would also look to off-load everything and either replace the disk with a new one (wonky disks aren't worth bothering with), and/or run a write-comparison test and pound on the drive some.
Journaling can be shut off on the fly; see the diskutil man page for details on the disableJournal knob.
I'd also try to determine if this is something specific to Photoshop, or if this is a more generic problem. Look also for patches for Photoshop, and do look to update whatever version of Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server is in use here.
There's no obvious mention of HFS+ and Journaling and Photoshop over at Adobe, either.

I ejected second internal drive accidentally - how do I find it?

I am on a mac pro running osx.5.8 and have a second internal drive that is set up as my time machine backup. I accidentally ejected it, and can't find it. Doesn't show up in Disk doctor either. Do I reboot a certain way?

Clean Install / Cloning to an second internal drive?

My boot drive is full and now seems slower - is it file fragmentation which slows a full drive?
Here's my set up - I've just added a second internal 1TB drive and want to clean install the original boot drive (350gb) which is almost full and seems to have slowed down. - What is the best way to do this?
Can i clone to a second internal drive?
Can i clone drive 1 onto drive 2 then clean install drive 1?
I want to keep a back up of system set up, software preferences etc.. so nothing goes wrong
Can i then use Migration Assistant to get everything back in place on drive 1 (software preferences etc..)
Then drop the folders in from drive 2 into 1 - then erase drive 2 to start fresh
(I'm running OS 10.5.8)

Yes you can use it as a regular drive. Store Data or even install the OS.
RAID 0 = Stripe. As an example 2x1TB drives striped will give you a single volume 2TB in capacity or thereabouts. RAID 0 gives you capacity and performance with no redundancy. If one of the drives fails you lose everything. Data is 'striped' across both drives. One drive does not get 'filled' up first before data is stored on the second drive.
It's important therefore with a RAID Stripe to have a clear and well-thought out backup strategy if you want to protect your data.
RAID 1 = Mirror. As an example 2x1TB mirrored would give you a single volume 1TB or thereabouts in size. RAID 1 gives you redundancy at the cost of capacity and performance. If the primary mirror fails the data is still on the secondary mirror allowing you time to replace the failed mirror. Data would then be 'mirrored/copied' again onto the replacement drive. Depending how much data you have this can take some time. Performance does suffer whilst this happening.
Depending on your hardware and how far you want to take this there is a whole world of RAID waiting for you to explore. If you had a MacPro for example you could use 4x1TB drives and have a RAID 10. A Mirror of a Stripe or - if you like - a Stripe of a Mirror. Either way you end up with a 2TB Volume giving you some measure of performance with redundancy. Beyond what's available built-in you're really looking at hardware RAID solutions. These can offer RAID 5 and RAID 6 with variations thereof. For example RAID 5 with hot spare etc or RAID 3 or even RAID 50 and so on.
The 'general rule' leaving 10% free if anything should be expanded to 15% if you're considering RAID. Performance degrades alarmingly once you get beyond that figure even more than un-RAIDed volumes.

How do I access new second hard drive?

Hi! I am newbie, I am sorry if this a dumb question...
How do I access my second hard drive?
This is what I have:
SparcStation5 170Mhz, 192MB memory.2HDD (one 4.3GB w/ OS, second Hdd 4.3GB)
I had my sparc working with Solaris 8 just perfect!
I added the second hard drive, no problems, I formatted the HDD from withing Solaris OS, (I can probe-scsi from openBoot promt and it showes OK), everything is OK so far, I can see the send hard drive using format, I can partition it and create slices on it, everything seems to be OK, I have no problems making partitions and everything on that Hdd. But when I try 'ls', I can't see anything on that disk, any suggestions? I tried several ways from my manual/book, including mount and it reads 'no acces point on mount' or somthing like that.
this is what I see from format command:
disk 0. (seegate 4.3GB.....) this is my new hard drive (already formated and partioned, I created a new partition /usr with 3.75GB on partition 6. Partition 3 is used by the hdd with a totoal of 4GB . this shows as c0t1d0
disk 1. (SUN4.2GB) this is the hard drive with the OS Solaris 8. this is c0t3d0
Am I missing something?

At the OK prompt, type probe-scsi. This will list all scsi devices on the system. Find the new drive.
Type boot -r so the OS will see the new drive.
Login as root and type format. Pick the new drive. The drives are listed as c(controller #)t(scsi id or target #)d(disk #). Label drive is required (it will tell you if the drive is not labeled).
Next, type partition. Partition the drive as required (always leave partition 2 as the whole drive as it is informational to the OS
Type print to list the current partitions. When you are done making changes type label
To return to the OS prompt, type quit twice
newfs /dev/dsk/DRIVE-ADDRESS
(ie c0t1d0s0) (controller 0 target(ID) 1 disk 0 slice(partition) 0).
mkdir directory, where directory is the directory you want to mount the drive on

I'm new at owning Macs so I have had Windows on main drive using bootcamp but I wanted to speed up my 17" Mac so I maxed out the memory and added the SSD drives. Thinking I could put the 2 operating systems on seperate drives I bought to 2 SSD's. Is there any way to do this. So far I have drawn a blank. Any ideas?

Yes. Just install Windows onto it without using the Boot Camp Assistant to partition it.

Hi! I basically would like to know how to use one of the internal hard drives in my Mac pro as a mountable network drive to enable me to do full time machine backup and restores for my MacBook pro. Thanks in advance for the help!

If it's just for you, you can access and or all of your Mac Pro drives from your MBP just by logging onto the Mac Pro using the Mac Pro name and password. This is a very bad idea unless you are in a trusted environment but if you're on a home network and you trust yourself, it really works.
I've been using this technique for years on a gigabit LAN in my home. It also works logging on the other or both ways. Just pay attention to things like re-boots and shut-downs.

Putting OSX on Second Internal Drive Macbook Pro

I am curious and hopefully somoene who has a bit more knowledge on this can help me out,
so I have 2 internal drives on my Macbook pro a SSD in the main bay and a 750 GB HHD in the superdrive bay - so boot camp still dosen't ( to my knowledge) allow a windows partition to be put onto the second internal drive where i have a ton of space..
so,
my thought on this is - would it be possible to have a very small osx partiton on the SSD to do bootcamp and ect so that then windows bootcamp would get most of the space on the SSD which is in the main bay and then partiton or fully install OSX again on the second internal drive and use that for my main drive for apple stuff and use the SSD for boot camp ( Windows 7 )
Would this be a good idea to do? Or would it potentially cause a lot of problems later on?
I haven't read yet about anyone trying this so thought i'd see what the more experienced apple people know / thought.

It doesn't matter what you originally format it, the Boot Camp Assistant will reformat it as FAT32. When you begin to install Windows you'll need to reformat it to make it bootable, and of course, since the drive will be larger than 32gb Windows will insist on formatting it as NTFS.
You can't make a partition on the second drive if you want to go that route. Boot Camp will need to use the entire drive if you don't want to install it to the Boot Partition.
Also, the drive will need to not be part of any RAID you have installed.

Adding a second internal drive: missing cable?

I recently purchased a Quad G5, to which I want to add a second internal drive. However, when I opened up the unit, only the smaller power supply cable was present. The wider controller cable seems no where to be found. I pulled the drive from my Dual G5, so I'm aware where the cable is SUPPOSED to be located. But nada. Has anyone had a similar experience? Did they short me a cable or is the thing hidden somewhere where I can't find it?

I recently installed a second internal HD and found both cables, but you have to look for them. One of the cable/plugs is located below where the HD goes. You probably found it right away. You just need to pull it out a little to plug it into the new HD. It's kind of an awkward angle but it seemed secure. The second cable is probably the one you're having trouble with. The original HD is plugged into the last plug on the cable. Unplug it from the original HD and pull it down and out. You'll find a second plug (in series) on the cable. Plug the original HD into the plug you just discovered and use the original plug for the new HD. Hope this helps!

Time Machine: Can I use a smaller external hard drive with larger internal?

Can I use a 250G external hard drive with and 500G unfilled internal drive with time machine? Or will time machine require I a 500G? I don't plan on filling the internal drive for a long time and don't want to buy a new external drive right now.

Yes, but you are very likely to get in trouble very quickly.
The problem is that TimeMachine saves multiple versions of any file modified, and if that file happens to be large, you can quickly fill up your TimeMachine drive such that it is throwing away older versions faster than you would desire.
Also if your boot drive's storage usage gets even close to the 250GB external drive's capacity, TimeMachine is likely to stop working.
If possible, I would suggest an external drive that is twice as large as your boot drive, or at least 1.5 times larger.
I guess you could repartition your boot drive so it is smaller than your external disk so you would be less likely to use more space than could fit on the external.
Personally, my opinion about backups is that much of my data is impossible to replace (family pictures, etc...), and spending money on backup hardware is a small price to pay for securing those memories. I also try to have it backup in more than one location in more than one way.

Second internal drive missing after 10.4.11 update

After gathering dust for some time I've decided up update the OS on an old B/W GS so it is compatible with my ISP. I have 2 internal drives and one external firewire. During the install I saw the second internal drive (which was the former boot volume running 10.2.X) in the list of available drive for install. But after the OS update the second internal drive is MIA. I believe it shows up in the System Profiler report (but with the I'm not sure one is not the Firewire). Any ideas?

I checked the connection and settings are they are according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Upon opening the Mac I saw (then remembered) that the second drive was connected via a Sonnet PCI card. I believe the problem is that the firmware for that card needs updated.
To reinforce that opinion, I've discovered that the drive still appears when booting in 9 and 10.2.x. It's very likely a 10.4. thing.

Installing LaCie DVD±RW Internal Drive with LightScribe 16x E-IDE with DL

Have just bought the LaCie DVD±RW Internal Drive with LightScribe 16x E-IDE with Double Layer for an incredible price if $44.99. Geeesh, why are they so cheap these days? I did researched this with LaCie customer/tech services and they indicated once the face plate is removed it will install easily into my PM G5 Dual 2.5GHz (Rev B model).
Has anyone else installed this and if so are there any issues to be aware of as part of the install process - oh, and did it work AOK ?
Thanks for any insights and/or feedback on this. I should be getting the LaCie burner next week sometime.

OK - so I received my LaCie - LaCie DL DVD±RW Internal Drive with LightScribe E-IDE, with Double Layer today. I thought I'd post my install experience before it all faded into the murky past. ;-)) I do this in order to help myself and for others who may wander down this install path. There are a few minor gotchas that if known ahead of time will make the install easier and less thought provoking for having to make decisions on how best to proceed.
Let me say up front, the install was successful, Apple's DVD SuperDrive device design is superb in that it allows easy removal in a dimensionally constrained space and the new LaCie device is now fully operational. I've played a DVD movie, it's compatible with the .Mac Backup 3 program after loading LaCie's software and my PM G5 Dual 2.5GHz (Rev B) now recognizes the device as a DL DVD burner (Vendor Supported). I've yet to use the LightScribe Labeler software, although I've installed it all from the supplied discs and latest updates from LaCie Support web site at http://www.lacie.com/support/drivers and select DVD from the drop down menu selection. I'm very pleased with this LaCie device at this moment.
Here's the install process step by step
1. First power off and disconnect all external devices from the PM.
2. Get your wrist strap on and ground yourself to PM casing.
3. Lay PM on its side and remove metal side panel and remove clear plastic panel.
4. Rotate both plastic latches that hold the SuperDrive in place.
5. Disconnect the SuperDrive's flat wire ribbon from Motherboard - it has a convenient handle for pulling it straight up and off. Once disconnected, push it thru the opening to where the SuperDrive casing is located. This will be more obvious when you are actually doing this.
6. Open the SuperDrive's Alu door by pressing lightly on it and sliding it down.
7. With Alu door open use a finger nail to engage a portion of the SuperDrive's tray opening and push up and towards yourself and at same time with other hand pull up the rear most portion of the SuperDrive's casing. The drive should slowly slide away from its feet slots much like for the HDs. Slowly remove the SuperDrive and before it is fully out remove its power connector and then the flat wire ribbon from rear of SuperDrive. The SuperDrive can now be completely removed. Note that on my SuperDrive the flat wire ribbon was attached to SuperDrive's casing with a grey two-sided sticky pad. Remove the ribbon carefully from this and then remove the sticky gray pad and affix it to the same place on the LaCie device. Rememeber the wire ribbon's orientation as you will need to re-install this a little later.
8. Remove the 4 black screw feet from the SuperDrive's lower surface. You will need a torx screw driver and may have to begin by losening them with pliers. Take these and screw them into the same spots on the base of the LaCie device.
9. Remove the stainless steel face plate from the SuperDrive - ply up the end wraps and it will slide and pull off easily. Place this onto the LaCie device.
10. Put the SuperDrive aside as you're all done with it now,
11. Press the tray release button on the LaCie device and pull off its plastic face plate - comes of easily.
12. This next step is a bit tricky, a bit time consuming and some care is needed. The LaCie tray eject button needs to be removed (you will notice on Apple's SuperDrive it's also missing, and there's a good reason for this). Use a small screw driver and pry up the right side (looking straight at the front surface of the LaCie device) of the button. It will come up and rotate to left some. The button is held on by a small plastic C-shape tab. Rotate the button to left until it comes off. This button cannot be left attached as when the LaCie device is installed the PM's Alu door opening mechanism will contact and interfer with the button and engage and press it down. Obviously this will make the LaCie device (and of course the removed Apple SuperDrive) think the tray needs opening.
13. Leave the jumper on the LaCie device in its default "Master" location. This should be the right-most two-pin position looking at the rear of the LaCie device.
14. Almost there - attach power connector and flat wire ribbon to rear of LaCie device and press the flat wire ribbon onto the sticky grey pad and slide the LaCie device into its holding slots by aligning those black screw feet with the slots. You may need to guide the other end of the wire ribbon thru the lower opening to the motherboard. Once the LaCie is in place connect the wire ribbon to the motherboard.
14. Relatch the plastic levers to secure the LaCie device firmly in place.
15. All done - so replace the plastic and metal side panel, reconnects things up and power on the PM. Go straight to the ASP and make sure the LaCie device is recognized and all the info is being displayed correctly. It will show Burn Supprt of Yes (Unsupported). Don't worry, once you install the included LaCie software is will show "Yes (Vendor Supported)".
Total time taken was around 2 hrs as I had to pause several times trying to figure out how to remove the SuperDrive with care and without any instructions to go by.
My LaCie - LaCie DL DVD±RW Internal Drive with LightScribe E-IDE, with Double Layer cost me $45 from Buy.com and it does come with two disc blanks - a Verbatim LightScribe 1x-52x CD-R 700MB and a Verbatim 16x SL DVD+R.
I recorded all the gory details from the LaCie device before installing it. Here's that info.
