Howto: Autostart in KDE4

Hello,
My script  ~/.kde4/Autostart/autostart.sh is not run in my Arch box (and the user has permissions to execute it). Is this a known problem? How can I debug/solve it?
Thank you.

I found it out. Things have changed from KDE3. Here I copy a mail from the KDE mail list:
~/.kde4/Autostart is a container for .desktop files, not shell scripts.
You'll need to write a .desktop file that has your shell script on the Exec
line if you want to use Autostart.
You might want to use ~/.kde4/env instead.  It is a container for files that
are sourced (run in the current shell environment) during kde session
startup.
IIRC, anything done from .kde4/env should not expect kded-type services
running, where as ~/.kde4/Autostart can depend on those services.
I use both for my purposes.  A script in env to start ssh/gpg agents and set
environment variables.  A script in Autostart to load my keys, asking for
passwords with graphical dialogs.

  • [SOLVED] cannot run Conky on KDE4

    I cannot start Conky on KDE4.
    Arch Linux Conky Manual says FEH must be installed and ~/.kde/share/autostart/fehconky must be created as follows:
    #!/bin/bash
    feh --bg-scale `dcop kdesktop KBackgroundIface currentWallpaper 1`
    I have installed FEH. Then I have created the links into .kde4 directory, because KDE4 supports this one. However Arch Linux installation with KDE4 does not include dcop but dbus. And there is no web link / information I could find, which states that how dbus must be started accordingly.
    I have also created a symlink (as stated in the page above):
    ln -s /usr/bin/conky ~/.kde4/share/autostart/conkylink
    , however when I reboot or relogin, KDE does not seem to start these programs. As a root I have not found any log file in /var/log containing why these programs cannot be started.
    For experiment, I have copied both files into ~/.kde4/Autostart, but in this case KDE4 cannot find dcop and Desktop Environment aborts to login prompt again.
    How can I start feh? Do I need it in KDE4? DBUS daemons seem to be running
    [arutku@hostarchlinux ~]$ ps -ef | grep dbus
    dbus 2999 1 0 Sep05 ? 00:00:01 /usr/bin/dbus-daemon --system

    arutku 4104 3870 0 00:29 pts/1 00:00:00 grep dbus
    [arutku@hostarchlinux ~]$
    Do I really need to start FEH then?
    Any help appreciated because there is no information in web I could find.
    dbus is not in DAEMONS list in /etc/rc.conf. And, maybe it helps:

    I have solved the problem by running
    update-desktop-database
    both for the user and the root. I don't know for which user solved this utility the problem but it solved. I think it corrected MIME settings of the operating system. Before I had run this utility, icons for the files could not be shown, files could not be associated and KDE complained inode/* MIME types in /usr/share/packages/kde.xml.
    However this utility solved the problems. Without any FEH installation/scripting stated in Conky Wiki of Arch Linux, Conky runs automatically now.
    ~/.kde4/Autostart for KDE4 is the correct directory now to autostart Conky or any other application.
    HTH.

    Uhhhh... it went away with just re-enabling (disable -> enable) _GNOME_ autostart programs with 'gnome-session-properties'... This is like the crazyest thing.

  • Is there a way to force kmix to use pulseaudio? [SOLVED]

    I am using pulseaudio and the phonon-vlc backend, most of the time Kmix will use pulseaudio, but on some occasions I will reboot and kmix will be using alsa (it will show up as Master instead of Internal Audio Analog Stereo) and I have to kill kmix and restart kmix in order for Kmix to control pulseaudio again.
    I was wondering if maybe there is something I can put into kmixs config file to always force pulseaudio in kmix

    Otamay wrote:
    I've had the same problem for almost one year. The problem is that kmix starts before pulseaudio does, so kmix only have access to primary volume control.
    KDE4 startup applications are stored in /usr/share/autostart, /etc/xdg/autostart and ~/.kde4/Autostart. The first directory contains the system programs that must be loaded, and the second and third directories contains user applications. KMix, when installed, stores kmix_autostart.desktop and restore_kmix_volumes.desktop in /usr/share/autostart, and pulseaudio stores pulseaudio-kde.desktop under /etc/xdg/autostart directory.
    Moving /usr/share/autostart/kmix_autostart.desktop and /usr/share/autostart/restore_kmix_volumes.desktop to /etc/xdg/autostart seems to solve the problem, allowing to pulseaudio start before kmix.
    A delay of almost 9 months jajaja. That was a very frustrating problem.
    Ufff thank you, finally I solved my issue.
    I had done what u say but it didn't work. So, I moved too /etc/xdg/autostart/pulseaudio* to /usr/share/autostart/ and I got it.
    The files I moved are pulseaudio-kde.desktop and pulseaudio.desktop.
    Thank you !!!

  • [SOLVED] Panels don't startup with Gnome

    When I login to gnome, no panels appear (it has worked in the past).
    All I have are the few default desktop icons and the ability to right click on the desktop which leads me to believe that I unchecked "gnome-panel" from the autostart option earlier.
    I would go back into the autostart option but I don't know how to access it now that I don't have a panel.  So does anyone know how I may access this or manually edit a file or something?
    I found this, but it wasn't very helpful: http://www.captain.at/howto-autostart-p … -gnome.php
    Any help very appreciated.
    P.S. I thought of trying Alt+F2 (that's the command right?) and then entering gnome-panel, but the run dialog would not come up when I tried.
    edit: Navigating to /usr/bin and then double clicking "gnome-panel" does nothing.

    sHyLoCk wrote:Did you unselect any package while installing it or did a full install of gnome and gnome-extras? By default the panel should come.
    Dude...lol, It was installed and working 100 percent for sure until I unselected it from the autostart list and now I need get it back.  I just need to know how to put "gnome-panel" back into the autostart list.
    EDIT: SOLVED
    Ah, I figured it out and it wasn't anything to do with what I thought.
    Earlier I uninstalled Avahi with gtkpacman and I guess gnome-panel absolutely needs that.  So ok, problem solved.

  • Kde4 - firefox tabs (howto upload image to forum?)

    Hi.
    When I 'use KDE style for gtk2' the firefox tabs look mangled  ( and ugly..)
    If I choose a gk style i.e qtcurve it is fine.
    Anyone know howto make the kde style work with firefox ?
    Also how do I upload an image to the forum ?
    Cheers

    Install gtk-kde4-oxygen-theme from AUR and use that. It works better in some apps that don't like the gtk-qt-engine (what you're using) like Firefox and OpenOffice.

  • [Solved] KDE4 won´t finish loading after login-in with KDM

    I have been trying to solve this for a while but I'm still struggling to solve it. The problem is that I can't successfully start KDE4; after trying to log as a normal user with a password the loading screen that shows the KDE icons (a harddrive, some tools and a globe) it gets stuck on the desktop icon.
    I could load KDE once, but I had to start X first and then use the xterm to call startkde, nevertheless it didn't asked for a user/pass and there was no menu visible only the desktop with the computer icon. (Not to mention I had to start it manually.)
    This are the points that are currently apply to my machine:
    KDE was installed as the normal user with sudo.
    It was installed using the minimal install command:  pacman -S kdebase kde-l10n-es phonon-vlc kdebase-workspace.
    Right now I'm trying to start KDE at boot by using the inittab method. As suggested in here.
    Because of it, if I try to run startx it will load kdm which will then try to load KDE without success.
    This is the .xinitrc file in my user folder.

    I believe that the most important file here is the xsession-error, and as I have said the file is cut at last line that appeared before the KDE got stuck, in case it is not enough info just tell me how much should I let it run.
    Any suggestions?

    Compositing is needed for the desktop effects, everything from shadows under windows to things like the desktop cube. Its difficult to say whether its a nvidia or kde bug since I was just going on guesswork; I know that compositing is started at about the point you mention the freezes. I don't know how far KDE loaded when you started it manually since I don't really recognise your description of what it was like but I'd guess that some other window manager (twm perhaps if you've been following the wiki) was already running, in which case kwin (which does the compositing) would not have started.
    Since desktop effects really improve the look and feel of kde (things like shadows and improved window switchers, desktop cube and the like are pure eye-candy) you may wish to debug further. Your graphics card should be able to run desktop effects as I have a laptop with a previous generation nvidia chip which runs fine after a bit of tweaking.
    If you load the desktop effects section of system settings you should see a checkbox "Enable desktop effects" if you check that you'll be able to switch to the "All effects" tab. Try disabling the Blur effect and clicking "Apply". If kwin still can enable compositing you'll see a box with a countdown that will automatically disable desktop effects again if you don't choose to keep the new settings. You might also want to try changing the scale method from "Accurate" to "Smooth" in the advanced tab.

  • Autostart in openbox doesn't work ...

    hi guys,
    i recently set up a nice and plain system using kde4 and openbox. everything's working fine except the autostart feature in openbox. i edited the autostart.sh and .xinitrc files several times, but none of my tries were successful
    i'm trying to start conky, pypanel and feh after openbox has loaded. Login manager is slim.
    autostart.sh
    #!/bin/bash
    . $GLOBALAUTOSTART
    eval `cat $HOME/.fehbg` &
    (sleep 2 && pypanel) &
    (sleep 2 && conky) &
    .xinitrc (furthermore i don't know if this file is even relevant towards openbox, because i start openbox from slim!?)
    #!/bin/sh
    exec openbox
    /etc/slim.conf (if needed)
    default_path ./:/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin
    default_xserver /usr/bin/X
    xserver_arguments -nolisten tcp vt07
    halt_cmd /sbin/shutdown -h now
    reboot_cmd /sbin/shutdown -r now
    console_cmd /usr/bin/xterm -C -fg white -bg black +sb -T "Console login" -e /bin/sh -c "/bin/cat /etc/issue; exec /bin/login"
    xauth_path /usr/bin/xauth
    authfile /var/run/slim.auth
    numlock on
    login_cmd exec /bin/bash -login ~/.xinitrc openbox
    sessions openbox
    screenshot_cmd import -window root /slim.png
    welcome_msg Welcome to %host
    shutdown_msg The system is halting...
    reboot_msg The system is rebooting...
    default_user arch0r
    current_theme default
    lockfile /var/lock/slim.lock
    logfile /var/log/slim.log
    Thanks in advance and best regards,

    you need to use
    exec openbox-session
    to use the ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh file.

  • [Solved]conky autostart link using kdemod4.3x

    I followed the arch wiki to install conky and the config works fine.  The wiki says to autostart conky $ ln -s usr/bin/conky ~/.kde/share/autostart/conkylink. But I have .kdemod4 not .kde in my home directory.  Trying the above link with ''.kdemod4" instead of ".kde" gave  creating link /home/user/ ~/.kdemod4/share/autostart/conkylink  "no such file or directory"
       Looking at ~/.kdemod4>ls -aF shows ./ ../ Autostart/ cache-myhost@ share/ socket-myhost@ tmp-myhost@.  Autostart is an empty dir. $ cd share shows apps/ config/ and kde4/ .
       How do I create the correct conky link using kdemod4.3 to autostart conky?  Or how to do same with SystemSettings > Advanced.>Autostart in KDE . Thanx:)

    Following another thread by 'pencuse' on 2008-05-12 under Desktop Environments suggested cd to ~/kdemod4/Autostart then ln -s /usr/bin/conky conky.  Now @conky shows under ~/kdemod4/Autostart:).

  • HowTo: Use Thunar's Bulk Rename with Dolphin

    I thought I would post a quick note here on how to use Thunar's Bulk Rename tool with KDE's Dolphin file browser.
    Background
    I am aware of KRename, but frankly, I find it a bit too complex. I prefer Bulk Rename because it is simpler, and because I often use regular expressions to rename files, which I find a bit quicker to accomplish with Bulk Rename than with KRename.
    Prerequisites
    Before getting started, one should make sure that dolphin and thunar are installed. This can simply be checked with the following pacman command:
    pacman -Qs 'thunar|dolphin'
    The output on should be similar to this:
    local/kdebase-dolphin 4.14.3-1 (kde kdebase)
    File Manager
    local/kdesdk-dolphin-plugins 4.14.3-1 (kde kdesdk)
    Extra Dolphin plugins
    local/thunar 1.6.3-2 (xfce4)
    Modern file manager for Xfce
    local/thunar-volman 0.8.0-2 (xfce4)
    Automatic management of removeable devices in Thunar
    KDE Service Menu Entries
    A kde service menu entry is, in most simple terms and for the purpose of this 'HowTo', a file that defines an option that can be added to e.g. dolphin's right-click menu. These services are by default in:
    /usr/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/
    ... but one can also add a service to the local configuration, which I recommend, unless you want the Bulk Rename feature to appear system wide.
    To add a service entry locally, open a Terminal and create the 'ServiceMenus' directory if it doesn't exist yet:
    cd ~/.kde4/share/kde4/services/
    mkdir ServiceMenus
    cd ServiceMenus
    Finally create the service entry that will make 'Bulk Rename' appear as a right-click option in dolphin. To do so, use your favorite text editor and create a file called 'bulk-rename.desktop' with the following content:
    [Desktop Entry]
    Type=Service
    ServiceTypes=KonqPopupMenu/Plugin
    MimeType=all/all;
    Actions=BulkRename;
    X-KDE-StartupNotify=false
    X-KDE-Priority=TopLevel
    [Desktop Action BulkRename]
    Name=Bulk Rename
    Exec=thunar -B %U
    Save this file as 'bulk-rename.desktop' in the previously created service menus directory (~/.kde4/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus), and you're done!
    Be sure to restart dolphin if it was already running. Select a couple of files (it works with folders, too), right-click, and select 'Bulk Rename'. Thunar's Bulk Rename will pop up with the selected files, ready for your renaming actions.
    Cheers,
    DrTebi

    Thanks for wriitng that. I suggest adding it to the wiki. That way the community can help maintain it.

  • GNOME3 beside KDE4

    Does anyone else experienced that KDE4 takes endless to start until the GNOME-Terminal pops up? Does anyone know why? Autostart is clean and everything and i really have no clue why the GNOME-Terminal pops and slows down the starting process

    I'm having this issue too. After some investigation, it turns out that gnome-terminal is invokde to start orca, a screen reader and magnifier from group gnome-extra.
    The rude solution is delete /etc/xdg/autostart/orca-autostart.desktop, or just delete that package if you do not need it.
    The better way is to tweak orca.autostart.desktop to tell KDE to ignore it,  using something like `X-KDE-autostart-condition=...` but I failed miserably.
    Hmmm i dont need orca at all. Going to try if that already solves the situation

  • [SOLVED] getting KDE4.2 event log in .xsession-errors

    Hi,
    My KDE4.2 desktop started adding log entries in the .xsession-errors file. They look like this:
    knotify(6768) KNotify::event: 49 ref= 0
    kwin(6764)/kdeui (KNotification) KNotification::slotReceivedId: 0
    kwin(6764)/kdeui (KNotification) KNotification::close: 0
    kwin(6764)/kdeui (KNotification) KNotification::~KNotification: -2
    Everytime I interact with the desktop (e.g. click icons or switch window), it appends those entries in the file - which compound quite fast. Does anyone know if those are real error messages which I have to fix, or just some debug messages from one of the module?

    Heema wrote:
    i also have kdemod and found out that .xsession-errors was huge
    for a temp solution i made a script to delete it on startup
    Agreed, I did the same yesterday. In the /home/USER/.kde4/Autostart directory, I wrote the following simple bash script:
    #!/bin/bash
    rm /home/USER/.xsession-errors
    This deletes the file .xsession-errors at startup and avoids any potential accumulated file 'buildup' and resulting wasted partition space.
    According to the file /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc, it contains the following statement:
    # Default is ".xsession-errors"
    This indicates that kdm creates this file no matter what (default), and as far as I know, it cannot be avoided, but can be deleted upon startup.
    Cheers,
    Eugene Markow

  • OpenBox Way better then KDE4.... Better then KDE3 :) [COMPLETED]

    Well I was vary upset about the move to KDE4.1. I was a big fan of KDE3.5.9. I even started a "Mad" thread about it (that I regret doing). However, OpenBox has all the things I liked about KDE3.5.9 and more
    Stability is the main thing for me. I don't wan't to see any bugs at all and this is one of the views of the OpenBox team as well. I also like to control every aspect of my box and OpenBox is all about this too. Simpel and Light are the two other things that are a must for me and OpenBox is just that.
    Anyway, What are some cool things you could suggest I do to it/ install ? I first -Rnsc KDE then -S gnome to give it a base to run on but I boot into OpenBox not Gnome/OpenBox.

I wish I could upload screen shots to archlinux-foums. So far I have tlida and screenlets (system mon) both with a cut of my wallpaper so they look trasparent. OBmenu and set up my menu. Obconf and set up stalonetray and have Manum_openbox as my theme. All, Is looking really kool.  Owe, Also I have Vieanna3 as my curser.
    Using OpenBox as a DE seems like the way to go. I love the menu by just clicking on the desktop. I wanted to use it when I first swiched to Arch but I wanted to learn one new thing at a time.
    Thankyou for the link that has a lot of good stuff
    So many things in this post are
    But that's ok. You're new. Welcome to minimalism.
    First off, you're saying you're using the gnome suite because "It handels my wallpaper and the way butons/ scrollbars look(theme Areo with Buuf-Deuce-Icons)." Both of these aspects can be controlled WITHOUT gnome. In gnome, Nautilus handles what wallpaper is set. Nautilus is a filemanager which also can control automounting of volumes and such. The reason I bring this up is because you're saying you ALSO run Thunar as a daemon. Why? If it is in order to automount volumes, you already have a program capable of doing this running.
    But in general, using Nautilus (or Thunar if you stick with that (which I recommend)) to display the background will, if not configured correctly, disable the right click on the desktop. This is why it's usually a good idea to get a program that will only set your background and nothing more. The programs suggested by jealma are all viable, as is nitrogen, suggested by xd-0.
    Second, gnome uses gtk2 to display the scrollbars, buttons, etc. known as widgets. You don't need gnome to use gtk2. Just install gtk2, then set your theme manually via your .gtk2-rc file, or via a program such as lxappearance (as suggested by xd-0. lxappearance will also allow you to set your icon theme.
    "Using OpenBox as a DE seems like the way to go." Careful who you say this around. Most OB zealots will throw a fit. I shuddered after reading it. See jealma's post.
    "I wish I could upload screen shots to archlinux-foums." You can. Get the program "scrot" and learn how to use it (`man scrot` or just google search it). Then go to a free image hosting site, such as tinypic, imageshack, xs.to, photobucket, etc. and upload it there. Then paste the link here.
    That all being said, welcome to the minimalistic world of Openbox.

    Others windows managers works fine. Only problem is with starting kde4. I dont know, if its caused by new Xorg or new kde.
    I am going to find solution by myself, but I am quite newbie.... so I would be so happy, if somebody have showed me a direction....
    Thank you very much for answers....

    Solved!!!
    It was caused by me, and now is everythink ok...
    Firstly I have replaced /opt/kde/bin/startkde by /usr/bin/kdeinit4 (in ~/.xinitrc)
    It was wrong, but I found that somewhere...
    Now si in my ~/.xinitrc "/usr/bin/startkde" and works fine...
    I am going to explore it...
