HP 3055 networked multi-function device: installation issue

Our home office network has an HP 3055 multi-function printer/fax/copier/scanner. I've been unable to scan from my MacBook since installing snow leopard. Attempts to reinstall the drivers from the original HP Mac disk have failed. Now whenever I boot my Mac, the HP "all-in-one" software tries to install itself. When I click "Finish" the installation crashes. I have a copy of the crash dump, but won't post it unless someone wants to see it.
Oddly, I can print just fine. My impression from the HP website is that they have given up on the Mac. Perhaps someone at Apple could persuade them to reconsider.
FYI I can scan just fine from Windows XP and Vista computers that are connected to the same subnet. Thanks for any advice.

Ouch. I was afraid of that. Do you happen to know whether HP has, in fact, given up on the Mac platform? The answer will influence my future hardware decisions.
No, HP hasn't given up on the Mac platform at all. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669?viewlocale=en_US has a list of all HP printers supported in Snow Leopard, and the ones with an '*' indicate that there have been updates for the drivers for these models. They're still developing, but I think they are trying to phase out some of the older models.
Many thanks for the quick reply. - Tony

  • Fax via Network Multi-Function Printer

I own a HP Multi-Function device to print, scan, fax, etc. My home network is set up to PRINT wirelessly from my computer to my printer, but for some reason I am unable to FAX wirelessly. As of now I must first print the document then fax it manually, when I'd much rather skip the middle steps of printing and just fax it directly using my network. The only way I can send a fax from my computer is bypass my wireless network and plug directly into the HP printer via USB. I think if I can print wirelessly why can't I fax wirelessly too? Any suggestions?

TC (and airport extreme) peripheral support falls into universal (ethernet) and special (usb).
Anything that can be connected to the ethernet port will be translated through the wireless system and work just well (or not well) as it would if connected via ethernet. Devices plugged into the USB port (directly or through a hub) require special support by Apple. Apple writes drivers for these and adds a tab to the airport utility software. This used to be just printers. Currently, this is limited to printers and hard drives. MFCs go beyond the simple printing function Apple is trying to support via USB.
In my case, I have a Brother 7820n MFC. Its designed to operate over ethernet. Plugged into the TC, this means printing, scanning, and faxing (right out the phone jack) wirelessly - from every computer in the house.
Does your MFC offer an ethernet upgrade?

  • Microsoft Outlook Exchange / Canon Multi function Printer Email Issue

    Hi there
A client of ours has been experiencing strange issues with one particular email address on their Microsoft Outlook Exchange Server and a Canon Imagerunner 1133if
The Canon scanning feature has been registered with all the computers and email addresses on their network. Whenever one of the employees scan a page to their email address, the email is sent and received with no problem whatsoever via Outlook 2010 Exchange,
    running from the exchange server.
Only one email address on their exchange server doesn't receive any of the scans sent to it, even if it did sent successfully??
    1. The email has been set-up correctly on the Canon and Exchange server (The email address syncs new emails and sends them without any hassle, but scanning to the said email, for eg. [email protected], won't show up in their inbox).
Note: We have checked the email on the canon printer and it has been registered correctly.
    2. We have whitelisted ([email protected]) the email on the client's computer, made sure it's not a blocked sender in junk email, checked the exchange email tracking logs, and everything checks out, according to the log the email has been sent successfully,
but for some reason, the email doesn't receive on his personal exchange inbox...all other emails sent to this inbox receives perfectly.
Neither the Canon Printer techs, nor we, can find the issue. If anyone has experienced this particular problem, with this particular printer or setup, please respond, it will be MUCH appreciated.
    Kind regards

I've heard many cases that user unable to scan to Email from Canon Scanner/Printer via Exchange Server. However, in this case, only one email address doesn't receive the scan items from the device, it seems to be none of business of IP/SMTP Port/DNS
or network else, I mean the server site due to the other user is ok. This following factors might be the root:
    1. Email address itself. If necessary, please type the exact address through Canon Imagerunner 1133if and send one thing to the target email address to check the result.
    2. Permission. Check and enable the Anonymous Group on Receive Connector somewhere.
    3. The user's client. Disable all of security application in that user's computer, or logon this account in another machine to test the behavior.
If none of steps above works, please create a new user in AD and then check everything is fine for a new createing user account. Thanks.

  • EPSON Artisan 810 a Bi-Function, not Multi-Function, All-In-One

I was in a local OfficeMax, looking at an *EPSON Artisan 810* all-in-one (Print, Scan. FAX, Copy), which came in a box covered with text and imagery detailing all of the amazing features it has. To my delight, I discovered that it supported OS X, albeit, they note that "some features like sharing memory cards over a network may not be supported". You'd think that would imply that tertiary (or specialty) functions may not work. But, surely, the basic 4 functions would, right?
It would have been nice if the employees had any kind of a clue with regard to the products they sell. But they don't. So I checked some support forums and the EPSON driver download page (on my phone), and sure enough, they even have Snow Leopard drivers. So I buy the printer and take it home.
I should have suspected something may be amiss when the installer asked me to enter my administrator password, but the dialog requesting the credentials kept losing focus, making it difficult to type in my password. Yikes.
I managed to get through the 30-part install (well, it felt like 30 separate, chained installers). The installer vanished, and I had no printer in my "Print and FAX" Preference Pane. Nice.
So, I add a printer manually, and it did see the EPSON as a Bonjour device. So I jump over to try the scanner, and I get a troubleshooter. After scrounging around the web, I found some advice from a user who discovered that you have to go into the Utilities folder and run an EPSON scanner utility to find and configure the device. ugh. Once I did that, it seemed to work.
Now, on to the FAX. The preference pane did not see a FAX device anywhere, and the EPSON printer itself has no FAX capabilities. So back to the web. After an hour of searching, nada. And no one even complaining about this apparent "missing" feature. So I hit the manual, and notice that FAXing from a computer is only supported in Windows.
At this point, I'm not even going to try to get the "Copy" function working.
    OFFICEMAX Knowledgeable Sales Staff: FAIL
    EPSON Customer Support: FAIL
    EPSON Product: FAIL
    EPSON Integrity: FAIL
So, in summary, this is a bi-function, not a multi-function, device. It prints and scans. They should put this on the box so people know what they're getting (or in this case, not getting). It's a real shame too, because I went with EPSON because Hewlett Packard did something similar with a computer I bought. The machine was billed as a multimedia and entertainment computer, yet, it couldn't play a game that was 5 years old. Do any of these companies have their metaphoric poop together?
And don't get me started on Lexmark.

Epson has the (annoying to me) built-in default of numbering each scan; so whatever name you would decide to use, you would still wind up with "mypicture093.jpg" for instance. That is true if you use the Epson Scan software. In any case, if you use that, once you click on "scan", you should get a new pop up window where you can enter the name (called Prefix by Epson) and where to save it. You cannot get rid of the "start number", but you can delete the number once the icon appears on your desktop or in a folder: just click it once and then hit "return" on your keyboard and you can change part of the name or the entire name for that matter.
If you choose to use the OS built-in app (under System Preferences -> Print & Fax), simply highlight the Artisan 810 and click on Scan and then on "open scanner"; you are then presented with a new window where you can change all sorts of settings incl. the name.

  • What Multi-Functional Printers are Best?

Does anyone know of a great all in one laser printer?
I recently migrated to a Mac and my Canon MF4150 does nothing but print one page documents when connected via USB to my Mac.
I can no longer scan documents to email, print double sided prints, and my Canon will not print wirelessly when connected to my Airport Extreme. What a waste! I said such great things about Canon products before but this is a real turnoff.
    Thanks!

Thanks Bob... I kind of though that would be the answer... but now I wonder when you say 'supported' devices, does the USB port support any multi function devices or are we just talking supported printers? While I can certainly attach the printer directly to my iMac, that requires the iMac to be on all the time for everyone to access the printer! I was hoping to avoid that and allow access to all the multi-functions (Print, can and card reader) via the Airport Extreme connection for all... which at present is an iMac, 2 MacBooks, two Vista laptops and an XP Desktop! Any answers to that conundrum?

  • Favorite Color Laser Multi Function Printer

    Hi,
We have four computers all running OS 10.6 connected to Airport Extreme base. Currently using Brother 5440 inkjet connected via Ethernet to the Airport. It scans from all computers, albeit with an occasional restart of the printer. We're looking to replace it (bad printerhead) with a Multi Function Laser device. I've read many reviews, etc complaining about inability to scan over the network or driver problems (HP 1312) for instance. My printer tech person recommends Canon 8350 or HP 1312. Any thoughts on the best Snow Leopard compatible Color Laser MF Printer?

After long consideration and being fed up with issues with HP printers in he past (especially with limited functionalities with Mac OS), I bought me a Canon MP560 this summer.
I think it's a great value for money, to refill the ink is reasonably priced (o.k., it could always be cheaper), but my most favorite feature is that I can print and scan from anywhere in the house. So far I am very pleased with both the scanning and printing results. Installation and handling of the SW suite is a child's play.
If I had to print more I would actually look into a Laser / LED MFP... perhaps the Brother MFC-9120CN or its wireless brother MFC-9320CW, which costs actually quite a bit more.
Unfortunately, as it seems, Canon has nothing to offer in this class of printers at reasonable prices that are also rated high.
    Just my 10 cents.

  • The Ultimate Guide to Resolving Profile and Device Manager Issues

The following article also applies to issues after re-setting the severs' hostname. It also applies to situations where re-setting the Code Signing Certifictateas described by Apple has not resolved the issue.
    Hello,
I have been plagued with Profile Manager and Device Manager issues since day one.
I would like to share my experience and to suggest a way how to resolve issues such as device cannot be enrolled or Code Signing Certificate not accepted.
I shall try to be as brief as possible, just giving an overview of the steps that resolved my issues. The individual steps have been described elsewhere in this forum. For users who have purchased commercial SSL certs the following may not apply.
In my view many of these issues are caused by missing or faulty certificates. So let us first touch on the very complex matter of certificates.
Certificates come in many flavours such as CA (Certificate Authority), Code Signing Certificate, S/MIME and Server Identification.
(Mountain?) Lion Server creates a so-called Intermediate CA certificate (IntermediateCA_hostname_1") and Server Identification Certificate ("hostname") when it installs first. This is critical for the  operation of many server functionalities, including Open Direcory. These certs together with the private/public keys can be found in your Keychain. Profile  and Device Manager may need a Code Signing Certificate.
The most straightforward way to resolve the Profile Manaher issues is in my view to reset the server created certicates.
The bad news is that this procedure involves quite a few steps and at least 2 hours of your precious time because it means creating a fresh Direcory Master.
I hope that I have not forgotten to mention an important step. Readers' comments and addenda are welcome.
I shall outline a sensible strategy:
    1. Clone your dysfunctional server to an external harddrive (SuperDuper does a reliable job)
    2. Start the server fom the clone and shut down ALL services.
    3. It may be sensible to set up a root user access.
    4. Back-up all user data such as addess book, calendar and other data that you *may* need to set up your server.
    5. Open Workgroup Manager and export all user and workgroup accounts to the drive that you using to re-build your server (it may cause problems if you back-up to an external drive).
    6. Just in case you may also want to back-up the Profile Manager database and erase user profiles:
In Terminal (this applies to Lion Server - paths may be diferent in Mountain Lion !)
    Backup: sudo pg_dump -U _postgres -c device_management > $HOME/device_management.sql
    Erase database:
    sudo /usr/share/devicemgr/backend/wipeDB.sh
    7. Note your Directory (diradmin) password for later if you want to re-use it.
    8. Open Open Server Admin and demote OD Master to Standalone Directory.
    9. In Terminal delete the old Certificate Authority
    sudo rm -R /var/root/Library/Application\ Support/Certificate\ Authority/
This step is crucial because else re-building you OD Master will fail.
    9. Go back to Server Admin and promote the Standalone Directory to OD Master. You may want to use the same hostname.
    10. When the OD Master is ready click on Overview and check that the LDAP and Keberos Realm reflect your server's hostname.
    11. Go back to Workgroup Manager and re-import users and groups.
NOTE: passwords are not being exported. I do not know how to salvage user passwords. (Maybe passwords can be recovered by re-mporting an OD archive - comments welcome! ).
    12. Go to Server App and reset passwords and (not to forget) user homefolder locations, in particular if you want to login from a network account!
If the home directory has not been defined you cannot login from a network account.
    13. You may now want to restore Profile Manager user profiles in Terminal. Issue the following commands:
    sudo serveradmin stop devicemgr
    sudo serveradmin start postgres
    sudo psql -U _postgres -d device_management -f $HOME/device_management.sql
    sudo serveradmin start devicemgr
    14. You can now switch back on your services, including Profile Manager.
In Profile Manager you may have to configure Device Management. This creates a correct Code Signng Certicate.
    15. Check the certificate settings in Server App -> Hadware -> Settings-> SSL Certificates.
    16. Check that Apple Push Notifications are set.(you easily check if they are working later)
    17. You may want to re-boot OS Server from the clone now.
    18. After re-boot open Server App and check that your server is running well.
    19. Delete all profiles in System Preferences -> Profiles.
    19. Login to Profile Manager. You should have all users and profiles back. In my experience devices have to be re-enrolled before profiles can be pushed and/or devices be enrolled. You may just as well delete the displayed devices now.
    20. Grab one of your (portable) Macs that you want to enrol and go to (yourhostname)/mydevices and install the server's trust profile. The profile's name  should read "Trust Profile for...) and underneath in green font "Verified".
    21. Re-enrol that device. At this stage keep your finger's crossed and take a deep breath.
    22. If the device has been successfully enrolled you may at last want to test if pushing profiles really works. Login to Profile Manager as admin, select the newly enrolled device. Check that Automatic Push is enabled (-> Profile -> General). Create a harmless management profile such as defining the dock's position on the target machine. (Do not forget to click SAVE at the end - this is easily missed here). If all is well Profile Manager will display an active task (sending) and the dock's position on the target will have changed in a few seconds if you are on a LAN (Note: If sending seems to take forever: check on the server machine and/or on your router that the proper ports are open and that incoming data is not intercepted by Little Snitch or similar software).
Note: if you intend to enrol an Apple iPhone you may first need to install the proper Apple Configuration software.
Now enjoy Profile and Device Manager !
    Regards,
    Twistan

  • Wireless print server that suppports multi-function?

I have a family member who has an HP multi-function USB only printer (can't remember the model offhand). They are looking to get a laptop soon. I was also gonna then hook them up with a wireless router for their home & DSL connection. The current HP printer is USB, but I would like to somehow make it wireless. I have used several wireless print server devices for USB printers, but none of them support the multi-functions (scan, copy, fax, etc) and simply allow you to do basic printing wirelessly. Short of buying a totally new wireless printer and/or network printer of some sort that can plug into the router & then handle all these functions wirelessly, is there possibly any wireless routers or wireless print server devices out there that will FULLY handle HP multi-function printers?

  • Multi-function printer compatibility

I have read in a few places that a multi-function printer (print, scan, fax, copy) will not work with all of the computers on the network plugged in to the USB port of the time capsule
to anyone that has the time capsule, is this true?
will all computers on the network be able to print?
because it is not too crucial for me to be able to scan to and fax from other computers on the network, will the scan and fax functions be usable on at least one of the computers?

  • Laser Multi-function printer recommendation

I know I'm probably not supposed to be asking for product recommendations here, but am not sure where else to go (if there are other good forums for this kind of thing, please let me know).
Anyone have any recommendations on a good laser multi-function printer? I'm interested in specific models, but am more interested in brands that are actually friendly to Macs in terms of updating software, providing support, etc. My current model is an HP Laserjet 3052, for which there is still no software update to accommodate for Leopard (which was released months ago).
    Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

  • "HP Solution Center cannot run because your device installation is not complete"

I cannot use HP Solution Center because I only get this message when I start it: "HP Solution Center cannot run because your device installation is not complete". I am running Windows XP with an HP PhotoSmart Premium. I can print just fine and the printer is recognized by the PC and the network. I get the same problem whether connected wirelessly or through USB. I have re-installed all software multiple times. Please advise on how to get Solution Center up and running.

I had to do a total uninstall and reinstall of the driver. However, as you will see from this and other Support Forum threads there seem to be multiple stumbling blocks to the uninstall/reinstall process. Seems very glitchy. After nearly two days of unsuccessful tries I finally got it done. I did find three different official HP scenarios for the process, including one automatically sent to my desktop by HP upon one of the earlier failures. That sequence did not work work for me, but it was close--I got a partial install. But on another HP help file titled "Product Software Installation stalls or stops in Windows 7 with a USB connected product HP..." I found a six step process (with details for each), and it worked for me on the second try. Here are the six steps, plus extra things I did or discovered that could have helped make it work. I did step 5b. first: downloading and saving  the HP driver file on my computer before starting other steps, since I elected not be be on the internet as I did the installation. 1. Uninstall the HP printer software. See my note below about four ways HP lists do to this. I used two of them.2. Turn off the 'terminate and stay resident programs (has to do with system configuration). See HP details.3. Clear temporary files and folders through Windows accessories.4. Disable firewalls (see my note below about this)5a. Disconned the cable from BOTH the printer itself and from the computer, BUT TURN ON the printer.5b. Get the lastest version driver for you printer from the HP site and save it where you can find it. (I did this first, before other steps, so I could install off-line)5c. Install the driver software that you saved. (see my note below about an optional step that helped me with this, so the install will complete, and not hang up)6. Enable the start up software that was turned off with step 2. (See HP details) Notes: there are versions of HP instructions that  skip steps 2 and 6 and or 3 and 4, but that would not work in my case. I describe the steps that finally worked in case they can help someone else--this has been so frustrating. This uninstall/install process seems to be very touchy and perhaps changes depending on your printer or other configuration of your computer: Note about step 1: I found an HP document that listed four ways to uninstall. On my final and successful attempt I actually used two of the techniques. First I used the HP uninstaller program from the start menu program list on my computer stored with other HP stuff there. When I rebooted it did not appear that any HP programs were removed, but who knows, perhaps this got rid of some hidden file somewhere that had been causing all of the problems. Then I used the regular uninstall process from the control panel, and that worked. All HP programs were gone upon reboot. Note about step 3: I counld not believe this would help, but did it, and again, who knows, perhaps this is critical. Note about step 4: I assumed that step two 'terminate and stay resident programs' turned off my McAfee firewall and antivirus, so I did not turn it off. And I elected to be off the internet during install because I am always fearful about turning off those programs. However, and this may be the source of problems for many people, the HP list was very specific to turn off the Windows 7 firewall. I checked it and it was running, even though I thought McAfee was in charge. So I did turn off the Windows 7 firewall. Subsequently I learned that many people who have upgraded from earlier Windows operating systems to Windows 7 have the Windows firewall operating along with their other firewall, without knowing it. Apparently this does not happen if you did a clean install of Windows 7 rather than an upgrade install. Note about step 5c: On many of my tries the installation program would not terminate or complete, and I would get a partial install that allow some functions of the printer to work, but not Solutions Center. The only way I found to prevent this was at the step near the end, where you hook up the printer, select the box that says it's okay to connect it later. The installer program dumps an icon on you desktop that allows you to connect the printer after the installation shows complete and terminates by itself. By clicking the icon and plugging the cable into computer and the powered-on-printer when directed, the device installs perfectly. That was the only way I could get a full install, or get the installation to terminate. During the two days of trying to make this work I also reinstalled the latest version of Flash player since I read that HP Solutions Center needs it to show screens on your computer about printer functions. Of course downloading Flash onto a 64-bit version of Windows 7 is a little tricky too, but not that difficult. I do not know whether that was important, but it is one more thing to try if you can't make your Solutions Center part of the printer program work. I learned way more about the unintall/install process than I ever wanted to know. Sorry to be so wordy, but after two days of frustrating work on this I thought I should share this, in case any of these ideas could help someone else who is hung up on this. Perhaps there is an easier fix somewhere. The six-step process was on an HP help site and was not even for my specific printer, but the similar list from my model did not work. Wish I knew what the secret to success might have been.
