  • [SOLVED]How to disable USB autosuspend?

    Hello!
    A long time ago I installed Arch on my notebook and configured it's power saving using laptop-mode-tools. I also installed pm-utils for suspend/hibernate. USB autosuspend worked correctly - on battery every device (including mouse) was suspending and no autosuspend at all on AC. Some time ago, I don't remember when exactly, it stopped working. Now, no matter what, my mouse turns off after 2 seconds.
    Here is what I did:
    1. Checked my laptop-mode-tools configuration (removed comments for brevity):
    cat /etc/laptop-mode/conf.d/usb-autosuspend.conf
    DEBUG=0
    CONTROL_USB_AUTOSUSPEND="auto"
    AUTOSUSPEND_USE_WHITELIST=0
    AUTOSUSPEND_USBID_BLACKLIST=""
    AUTOSUSPEND_USBTYPE_BLACKLIST=""
    AUTOSUSPEND_USBID_WHITELIST=""
    AUTOSUSPEND_USBTYPE_WHITELIST=""
    BATT_SUSPEND_USB=1
    LM_AC_SUSPEND_USB=0
    NOLM_AC_SUSPEND_USB=0
    AUTOSUSPEND_TIMEOUT=2
    So far looks good.
    2. According to wiki, pm-utils might conflict with laptop-mode-tools. So I created a dummy file in /etc/pm/power.d for each of the scripts from /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d . For the moment I don't care if I disabled too much. I just hope laptop-mode-tools covers all powersaving features.
    ls -l /etc/pm/power.d
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 08-08 19:58 hal-cd-polling
    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 08-08 19:58 intel-audio-powersave

    -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 0 08-08 19:59 xfs_buffer
    ls -l /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1316 2013-05-30 hal-cd-polling*
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 870 2013-05-30 intel-audio-powersave*

    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 1642 2013-05-30 xfs_buffer*
    Still no luck.
    3. As I found out, there is some kernel option CONFIG_PM_RUNTIME, which allows the kernel to autosuspend usb devices: source. It's on:
    cat /proc/config.gz| gunzip | grep CONFIG_USB_SU
    CONFIG_USB_SUPPORT=y
    And as I read here I can disable usb autosuspend using boot parameter. So i edited my /etc/default.grub, and now my grub.cfg looks like this:
    sudo cat /boot/grub/grub.cfg | grep usb
    linux /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=d18cd4a4-2ebf-4874-80ff-8520016b0ed4 rw quiet usbcore.autosuspend=-1
    linux /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=d18cd4a4-2ebf-4874-80ff-8520016b0ed4 rw quiet usbcore.autosuspend=-1
    linux /boot/vmlinuz-linux root=UUID=d18cd4a4-2ebf-4874-80ff-8520016b0ed4 rw quiet usbcore.autosuspend=-1
    After rebooting I checked:
    cat /sys/module/usbcore/parameters/autosuspend
    -1
    Cool! It should work! But... it doesn't. The mouse still goes to sleep after 2 seconds, and:
    kolzi@kolzi-laptop ~ % for i in /sys/bus/usb/devices/*/power/autosuspend_delay_ms; do cat $i;done
    2000
    2000
    2000
    2000
    2000
    2000
    2000
    2000
    2000
    kolzi@kolzi-laptop ~ % for i in /sys/bus/usb/devices/*/power/autosuspend; do cat $i;done
    2
    2
    2
    2
    2
    2
    2
    2
    2
    Where doesn't this 2 (or 2000) come from? How disable this suspending and let laptop-mode-tools control it? What's going on?

    For now I run
    sudo systemctl disable laptop-mode.service
    and changed in /etc/laptop-mode/laptop-mode.conf
    ENABLE_LAPTOP_MODE_TOOLS=0
    After rebooting I still have the same issues. Also, even after disabling laptop-mode-tools, the brightness changes after unplugging the laptop, so either the laptop mode wasn't disabled at all, or there is something else 'helping' me with powersaving.
    @brebs
    Thank you, but it looks for me more like a workaround than a solution. It could work, but it doesn't tell me what disables my mouse and where is the root of the problem.

  • What do you use to block/disable USB ports and CD/DVD drives?

    I have been tasked with finding software that can disable USB ports not being used for keyboards & mica and CD/DVD devices.  At a previous job we used Sophos Enterprise console and it had that ability.  I currently use VIPRE Business Premium but I don't see where their products have the same capability.  So, what do you gals and guys use?

    Most business leaders are always looking for new ways to put money back into their budgets. This is particularly true of small and midsize businesses, which have smaller budgets to begin with. For these companies, the prospect of saving on IT equipment can be especially attractive.Buying previously owned IT equipment can be a great way to achieve the savings that so many businesses are looking for, but it’s important that you take the time to learn exactly what you’re getting before you make such an investment. The terms “used” and “refurbished” are commonly used to describe previously owned IT equipment, but the two are not interchangeable. If you want to make sure the great deal you’re getting is really as great as you think it is, it’s important that you learn what the two terms mean, and how they’re different.Used Vs. • Disable USB per USER

    Hi guys,
    i really need your help to disable USB per User. I have installed Windows WMS 2012 on a server and it is connected with USB to LG monitors, my issue is i have to disable USB devices per Monitor. Can anyone help me it is very urgent !!!
    Kind Regards,

    The easiest way is to set the permissions on the
    printer utility for only the Admin account.
    Go to the Applications\Utilities\Printer Utility.
    Getinfo on the Printer Utility and set the "others"
    to No Access.
    Be sure to remove the printer(s) from the accounts
    you don't want to have printing. This is a global
    change and there won't be any printers available
    under the users account. This will prevent (Kids)
    users from adding a printer.
    I just tried this and I could not get it to work for me. I changed the access on Printer Setup Utility and removed the proxy printers (~/Library/Printers) and all .plist files having to do with printing (~/Library/Preferences) from a non-administrative user account. I was still able to print from Word without any problems.
    Also, when I Repaired Permissions, the permissions for the Printer Setup Utility returned to "factory specs" and "Others" again had Read permission.
    Did I misinterpret your instructions?
    Matt

  • Any software or tool for disable USB mass storage ?

    Hi,
    I am a trainee IT admin in a company with 300+ Mac machines.
    we have integrated all systems in a domain hosted on Windows Server for authentication.
    For disabling USB mass storage, we have manually removed .kext file from all machines. But it was quite a difficult job and need to perform every-time after  Software Update.
    Is there any alternate way or a Software/Tool which can disable USB mass storage permanently ?
    Thanks in advance.
    SP

    Sure.  This is cake.  MCX supports this.  How are the Macs configured?  Are they bound to Active Directory?  Open Directory?  JAMF?  The state of directory association/management will determine how you implement.

  • How to disable USB, Bluetooth, Web Camera in iMac

    Hi
    Hi we have 4 Apple iMac 21.5” Quad-Core i5 2.5GHz/4GB/500GB/Radeon HD 6750M 512MB. We have upgraded the OS to Mountain Lion. For company security purpose we want to disable USB, Bluetooth, Web Camera. Please help us understand if this can be done or not ?
    Thanks in advance,
    Soum

    Hello, soum_mohanty.
    There's no need to post again in the iSight (or any other) forum.  Hosts will likely delete multiples anyway.  I will just give you my thoughts here.
    Use Linc's answer above:  (Regards, Linc)
    From Hardening Tips - National Security Agency:
    ... The best way to disable an integrated iSight camera is to have an Apple-certified technician remove it. ...
    Contact your Apple-Authorized Service Provider and discuss your needs.  If anyone can safely disable the cameras in a way that meets your security requirements without damaging your Macs, it will be an AASP.
    If your AASP cannot do what you need with your current Macs, my only remaining suggestion is that you consider trading them for machines that have no inbuilt camera.  Mac minis or Mac Pros may meet your needs.

  • How do I reset or enable a disabled usb port on a macbook air 10.7.2

    Ok, tried installing a thumb drive and a message says "too much power is being drawn, usb is disabled..."  Does anyone know how to reset or enable a disabled usb on a MBA?  Thanks

    Reset PRAM & SMC several times with no luck.  Took it to the apple store and did a diagnostic...pass, but USB still does not work.  Genius says, USB hardware will need to be replaced...FREE (under warrantee).  It would have been $280 for labor and parts replacement.  Should be ready in 5-7 days.  Lessons learned, don't buy cheap USB thumb drive.

  • Disabled usb mass storage

    i accidentally disabled my ipod by right hand clicking on the icon on the bottom tool bar while it was a mass storage device b/c i was trying to make it work. now it won't communicate with my computer. it flashes green twice then green/amber then does it all over again, and again, and again... i've plugged it into another computer(and noticed it only flashes this way once, not continuously) and finally got it back to an mp3 by changing the drive letter but that doesn't help me on my computer where my music library is. i've gone into device manager but there's no disabled usb device to re-enable. i've deleted all usb controllers and re-enstalled with no luck. i've uninstalled ipod and itunes software but it makes no difference. someone else brought their flash drive over, plugged it in and it worked fine. usb drives work with my camera too. PLEASE HELP!!!!

  • Is there any way to disable USB charging on N8?

    It might be a strange question. But many time, my battery still nearly full and I just want to transfer a couple of files. When I plug the cable in, it start charging right away. This may makes battery deteriorate faster. Therefore, is there any way to disable USB charging? Thanks!

    charging by usb isn't a problem , modern batteries do not suffer 'memory effect' just do what you want to do and don't worry about it . My N97 is connected to laptop most nights for anything from 10 minutes to an hour , no battery problem in 18 months and left on charge overnight every night . Enjoy your new phone and don't worry about a problem that doesn't exist

  • Disable USB 2

    I built system using the 845GE motherboard to run our freeway sign. The USB transmitter supports USB 2.0 but the drivers do not. The company doesn't have a fix yet. Is there a way to disable USB 2.0 so that it will use 1.1 insted.
    Thanks
    OS is Windows 2000 sp3

    USB2.0 is backwards compatible with USB1.1, but if you really need to usually USB2.0 support can be disabled in the bios making the controtroler into a USB1.1 one.
    Did you install the intel USB2.0 driver ?

  • Disable USB Drives GPO

    Hello,
    I have a GPO set and linked to my AD domain to disable USB drives when they connect. The policy has the following settings enabled.
    Removable Disks: Deny read access
    Removable Disks: Deny write access
    WPD Devices: Deny read access
    WPD Devices: Deny write access
    However, when I test users are always able to connect and use the USB drives. Is there anything else that needs to be configured before the policy works correctly?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi,
    You may have a check if the group policy got applied or not just as aperelli just indicated above.
    Also you could try to configure your group policy setting like below:
    >>navigate to
    \Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\System\Removable Storage Access.
    >>enable the below setting:
    All Removable Storage Classes: Deny All Access.
    >>In the Command Prompt, type GPupdate /force
    This setting is a effective way to diasble the removable storage access.
    Best Regards,
    Elaine

    At some point yes, but for Li-Ion batteries it is recommended to 'top off" or partial charge and not allow the charge to drop fully to 10-15% of battery, because that draining does hurt the battery.
