HP Laserjet 5MP - help to set up via USB please

I have my trusty workhouse, the HP Laserjet 5MP that I want to continue to use with 10.6
Have just bought a parallel to USB cable, my system sees the cable, but I cannot get the printer to work - any idea on how to get it working.
I have seen recommendations to connect via ethernet, but for some reason I haven't clue how to find or set up an IP address for the printer.

See Mac OS X- About printing with a USB-to-parallel cable for potential problems using these cables with some printers and drivers.
To use an Ethernet setup the printer must have a TCP/IP card installed - Jet Direct for that model. If there is such a card installed then there will be an active Ethernet port on the rear of the printer, and the card installed in one of the inside slots.
Using an Ethernet port setup on the printer should be explained in the printer's user manual. if you don't have one you can download manuals from the HP web site.

  • IPod touch failed set-up via USB - please help?

NB - this is not related to my Mac computer. I am connecting an iPod touch 4th generation to a Windows machine running XP (SP3).
The iPod is new and I can't get it to set up via USB connection to computer running iTunes (I have mobile broadband, and it isn't a wireless connection). I have tried the minimum, older version of iTunes and the most up-to-date version.
On connection, both the iPod and iTunes acknowledge each other and the iPod charges. It says "connected to iTunes", but does nothing further. Once the screen saver blanks the screen, it simply shows "connect to iTunes" again, clearly part of the set-up process, when I re-activate the screen.
In iTunes, the iPod Touch comes up under "Devices" at the left-hand side of the iTunes display, but I can't click on it to reveal anything about the iPod - nothing happens. At the same time, a progress bar appears at the tope of hte window saying, "accessing iTunes store" (I'm assuming this must be part of the set-up process?!), but it never completes. Sometimes, I get an error message telling me I have no active internet connection (the connection IS active, but I have also emailed my service provider in case this is relevent), but mostly it just hangs - in short, I can't do anything.
I can't tell you which version of the iOS the iPod is running, because - you've guessed it - it will only run its set-up procedure, and that's not completing, so I can't find out anything about it...
So disappointed, and very dispirited after spending days on this and getting nowhere. Apple has not responded to a service request thus far.
Desperate to get this sorted out, because the whole point of finally getting an iPod (which everyone told me would be so simple to set up and use) is because I'm doing a really big charity walk in a couple of weeks - that, and the training walks, are really long (next one, tomorrow, is seven hours), and doing them without music is soul-destroying.
If you can help, I'd be grateful beyond words.
    Thanks for reading,
    Sheri.

Why do Apple not respond to correctly initiated support requests?
This is taking weeks to fix on my own - that is *crazy* in this day and age. Here is an update. Sorry it's long, but it's in case it helps anyone else. I tried *everything*.
What did it in the end was a tiny - REALLY tiny - thing, but I suspect it wouldn't have worked if not in combination with several other things.
It's a setting in internet explorer, which I use rarely if ever, but a friend (i.e. a stroke of luck that he was around) pointed out that iTunes uses it in the background to work properly, and it's a security setting in the "Advanced" tab of the "Internet options" bit of IE. You need to UNtick the box for "Check server's certificate revocation". Which suggests that, before doing this, iTunes was going into an endless loop of checking. Not sure about that, but anyway - it worked in terms of getting the oPod recognised and set up (but see later in the post for the current situation). BUT... before that, I'd had to:-
    1. via my firewall, open two ports (80 and 443) needed by iTunes (I think this was key as well, actually - why on earth doesn't this sort of support come with the kit?)
    2. uninstall latest iTunes and revert to a previous version (may or may not have been necessary, but seemed logical especially as the iPod's iOS wouldn't be up-to-date) - that needed doing twice, as the first version I tried was *too* early for a 4th generation touch
    3. flush the resolver cache several times, and various other command-line actions
    4. try all connecting and communicating in different orders (e.g. trying to authenticate iTunes *first*, before connecting iPod) - but now I've seen the set-up process once through in its entirety, it's become *so* obvious that none of that was working, so it's partly my inexperience with iPods which made it take so long to find the solution
    5. try to set it up via the iTunes website instead (fail!)
    6. test secure site (https) access and inputting various server addresses to see if my firewall or mobile broadband provider was blocking them
    7. attempt connection with various parts of virus protection and firewall disabled, and even disable the entire firewall
Not to mention endless emails and discussion forum contributions, reading and tweaking, all the re-boots...
    CURRENT SITUATION
Lots of aspects working, but as soon as I ask the iPod to do anything internet related (use Safari, access App Store, etc - or even just sign in), it returns the message, "Cannot connect to iTunes store" - despite being connected by a cable to a computer which IS connected to the internet and IS running iTunes, IS accessing the store, HAS synced with and updated the iPod...
Absolutely NOTHING in Apple "support" discussions/documents makes any difference, and is almost exclusively aimed at those connecting wirelessly anyway (so lots of stuff about routers, DNS settings, etc.); wireless is not an option oopen to me.
    Unbelievable.
Any suggestions which don't just point me to an Apple support document would be very welcome, because I think I have read them all...

  • L7680 Can't connect via Network works fine direct connected via USB Please Help!

    Greetings All,
I have an HP L7680 that has been having this same problem since I purchased it and the only cure that has ever worked is to completley reload Windows XP and start over which I am very tired of reloading XP to resolve a printer problem.
This has been posted by several other people but I don't see where anyone has posted a fix.
When I first install the printer everything usualy works fine and it runs fine for a few mionths. Then the first indicatrion of a problem is the scanner quits working. Then when I try to reinstall the software the printer does not show up.  I read and tried every solution and have spent nuerous hours with HP support to no avail.
The printer works fine direct connected via a USB cable and it works fine with two other computers on the same network. One of the other computers has the exact same OS and is the same HP model laptop.
I don't think the uninstall is completley removing all the files or reinstalling everything fresh when I reload. I have tried the Level 1 through 4 uninstall utility posted on HP's site and have tried all sugestions posted in this forum.
Below is a better rundown of the problem.
When the Scan function is called, a "Scanning" window appears, and hangs
I have an HP Laptop with XP32 Bit software
Once the scanning window appears it stays there forever
Only way to clear scanning page is to terminate hpoews01.exe with Task Manager
Scanner does not show up in Paint or Photoshop ect.
Web Scan Does work and printer shows up using IP address.
Scanner shows up fine on a web page
HP support in India has been no help and now my printer is out of warranty so even less help
    Thank you,
    Dave

I had a similar problem with my OfficeJet L7680 and here's how I fixed it.
    18APR10 - from Dan
I lost my L7680 network link (using CAT5 from printer to router) and could not print to it over the network.  However, I could print from a PC with a USB cable directly to the printer, but there are currently three PCs connected wireless to the network.  I think I have a viable solution for anyone with the same problem and is not related to the operating system of the PCs.
Originally, I went to the HP site and downloaded the program for the L7680, Critical Update to Enhance Reliability of Network and USB Connectivity and Improve System Responsive....  This worked wonders until my modem and/or router went down.  I could see ink levels from my PC, scan, print, and so on.  Then I somehow lost my network connection again.  When I checked the network settings on the L7680 printer panel (Setup, 5 - Network, 1 - View Network Settings, 2 - Display Wired Settings), I noticed a different IP address than the original 192.168.1.100.  Once I figured out how to reset the printer to that one, it connected and worked as it should.
Here's how to reset it:  1.  Power down all devices (wired and wireless) to the router (I even disconnected the printer power cord and CAT5 cable at the printer); 2. Power down the modem and router - wait a minute or so before powering back up;  3.  Power up the modem and give it a minute or so to go through system checks, which will normally acquire a new IP address from your ISP;  4. Power up the router and let it go through its system checks; 5.  Connect the CAT5 cable from the printer to the router and power it up before you power up and connect any other computers.  This should assign the printer the first IP address from the router, which should be 192.168.1.100.  Once the printer goes through its start-up checks, you can check its assigned IP address from its panel.  6.  Power up any other PCs or devices to the router.  They should be assigned successive IP address numbers from the router.  You can check these using a browser in the PC after typing in 192.168.1.1, logging in to the router, and checking the appropriate place in the router driver/software displayed in the browser.  I was not able to reassign IP addresses in my router's driver/software to individual devices, but this method did the trick.  I did not try to change the IP address of the printer from its panel to match what had been inadvertently reassigned to it.  That might be another option to synchronize the printer and router with the same IP address.  If the printer loses its connection again, you'll have to synchronize what the printer has with what the router shows.  This worked for me.

  • Setting up HP L-7590 via usb to wireless router, help needed..!

    Hi,
I have been using my L7590 via lan to a wireless router for a few years... that was perfrect...
Recently I had to change router because of change of ISP. The new router is a Huawei B683... the  problem I have is that this router does not allow LAN connections from the router ...!! It does has a USB port that is for the printer...
I am unsure as to how I setup the printer connected via usb to the router....
Do I use the network installation setup...? Or do I use the USB setup...??
    Any help is greatly appreciated...
    Thanks

    Hi,
Connecting the printer to a router's USB port (aka. print server) will only allow you basic print functionality , it won't provide you any scan functionality, faxing from the computer, ink levels or any operation of the HP Solution Center program.
To get full functionality you must work with the provided functionality which means USB connection directly to a single PC or Ethernet connection to a router.. therefore using an Ethernet router will be the preferred solution for you.
In order to setup the printer as you described you should connect the printer to the USB port and go to Control Panel > System. click add a printer and add it through the network.. there might be a need to enter your wireless homepage to enable the printer through the USB, there might be additional setup information in there.. that veries between different print servers and you may contact Huawei support or your ISP for any assistant within the print server configuration.

  • LaserJet Pro MFP M276nw software installer not detecting printer via USB or wi-fi - Windows 7

I am trying to install a LaserJet Pro MFP M276nw on Windows 7 Home Premium x64, and I know the printer functions fine, as I have installed it on both Windows Vista Basic x32 and Windows 7 Professional x64 all on the same desktop. The operating system has been changed a couple of times, hence the multiple installs.
I downloaded the full featured software from HP.com and went through the routine of installation as per usual, except that now the software doesn't detect the printer when it requests that I connect it via USB.  Trying to install via wi-fi doesn't work because the printer still needs to be attached via USB in order to create the proper wireless handshake.  Windows 7 detects the printer, and in-fact installed the drivers for it automatically.  However, the printer installation software suite does not respond to the printer being connected, and just hangs there, waiting for it to appear.
I have tried multiple USB ports and it's the same issue.  I've installed the basic driver also available for download on HP.com, but that software does not appear to include an option for scanning files to the computer.  The printer itself will scan to email or to to a USB thumb drive, and even to a network folder, but not directly onto the computer.  If it wasn't a necessary function of an all-in-one printer, I wouldn't bother with the scanning feature and simply make do with the basic printer driver.
Anyone have some sort of idea regarding this issue?

    Hi @KP_ ,
I see that you are having issues with setting up the printer on the one computer. I would like to help you out today.
I would uninstall the software, turn off the Startup programs, Antivirus software and update the driver during the install by the post I have provided.
    Disconnect the USB cable.
    Uninstall the software.
Here are the steps to run the uninstall from the computer or the CD.
    To uninstall from program files:
Touch the Windows key and the E key to access the computer window.
    Select the C drive.
Select program files or program files x86.
Open the HP and printer name folder.
    Select uninstall.
Uninstall the software from the CD:
Touch the Windows key and the E key to access the computer window. Right click on the CD for the printer, left click open in a new window, double click on uninstall.
I would disable all the start up programs and temporarily turn off the Antivirus Software to see if there is a program interfering in the back ground. How to use MSCONFIG . Click on the start up tab and click disable all.
Download, save and then run the latest drivers. Don't Connect the USB cable until prompted during the install.
HP LaserJet Full Feature Software and Driver.
Right after connecting the USB cable, follow this document immediately. A Fatal Error Displays During Software Installation. Disregard the title. If the printer stays listed properly, don't worry about updating the driver.
    Test the printer.
Then you will have to go back and enable the Startup programs and turn the Antivirus Software back on again.
If you need further assistance, just let me know.
    Have a great day!
    Thank You.

  • How to connect an old HP LaserJet 5MP to a new iMac?

Having the worst trouble -- for starters, the printer isn't recognized in Printer Setup Utility, though HP's on-line notes tell me that 10.6.4 has everything it needs for this printer. If so, where on iMac should I see the driver file or whatever it's called?
The printer is connected (as before) by way of a router and Ethernet, but the connection also goes via an AsanteTalk box. That was added years ago when I had difficulty connecting my last iMac, a G5, and I'm wondering if it's the problem because it's AppleTalk related and now AppleTalk is no more.
Where to start!? Help would be most appreciated.
    Thanks . . . Fortes

It's taken me a week to get hold of the necessary cable but still no joy, though I now realise my comment above about the link is wrong -- I didn't know about USB to Parallel Printer Adapters or what they looked like. So the link above is fine. Using the new cable and discarding the AsanteTalk box, I connected directly to the iMac.
There seems to be two ways to adjust printer settings, first via Command-P where one can add a printer (I chose Protocol: HP Jetdirect-Socket, and Address: my IP address, but then, after some on-line back and forth, there's a message "Network host [my IP address] is busy." The other is the Printer Setup Utility which leads me to Printer List and "You have no printers available" plus some buttons. When I click the Add button I get the message "Printer Setup Utility quit unexpectedly", then clicking on Reopen takes me back to "You have no printers available."
What I'm not seeing is a list of printers or any mention of the HP LaserJet 5MP.

  • HP Laserjet p2035n Can't set DHCP

Hello I have a HP Laserjet p2035n connected via a switch to a LAN. The printer had a static IP address configured, and handled print jobs from connected PCs with no problem till yesterday.
The printer stopped responding to print jobs sent accross the LAN. Also, I was unable to access the web admin interface for the printer. I decided to reset it to factory settings and reconfigure it from scratch. I powered off the printer and held down both the GO button and the CANCEL button while powering the printer back on. The indicators all flashed in unison signalling that the printer had been reset.
When I printed a configuration page however, it indicated that the printer was still in manual IP configuration mode with an IP of 0.0.0.0 meaning that it would not pull a temporary IP from my DHCP server. Sure enough, I was unable to access the printer web admin interface after the factory reset.
I tried upgrading the firmware, I tried installing the HP software on my laptop to see if there was a setup programme that would reconfigure the printer ... I tried connecting directly via USB and successfully printed a few pages.
Can someone tell me if there is a way to  reset the network connection mode of the printer back to DHCP, perhaps using the buttons on the printer, or some tool that I can download.
Thank you for any help that you could offer.
    ELMKD

    Hello:
Thank you for your response. I resolved the problem.
A static IP was reserved for the printer by my DHCP server.
The printer experienced a duplicate IP error on the LAN which was not indicated on the configuration page.
The printer was returned to factory default, but could not complete the initialization process (it is unclear why).
    Network Information showed the following:
    Status = Initializing
    Host Name = ...
    IPv4 Address = 0.0.0.0
    IP Subnet Mask = 0.0.0.0
    IP Default Gateway = 0.0.0.0
    IP Configured By = Manual
    etc...
This meant that the EWS could not be accessed, and the printer would not pull a new IP via DHCP.
    Solution
    1. Return printer to factory default by powering off, and holding down both CANCEL and GO buttons while powering on.
    2. Ensure that there are no IP address conflicts on the network affecting the printer.
    3. You may have to connect the printer to a separate subnet to get it to fully initialize and pull a temporary IP via DHCP
    4.  Print a configuration page by holding down the GO button for 5 seconds and verify that you have a new IP
    5.  Access the printer web admin page via the new IP and reconfigure the printer as needed. Static IP etc.
I hope that this helps someone else who might be confounded by this problem.
    Regards,
    Elmkd

  • Help needed setting up print server

    i got 2 printer:
    1 usb inkjet epson 1290
    1 hp5100 network
    i have 1 server:
serving epson for our col proof using powerripx as driver and shared via os x print server
i have 2 network interface card on the server.
my problem is: the position of the server in the office has only one network interface port, i want to have my HP connected to the 2nd network interface of the server and the server connected to the only available network point there and thus have the server serving both printer.
have set up the en1 interface, enable NAT, dhcp, firewall, but the server itself does not recognised the hp which is connected to the 2nd ethernet interface. when i move it on top of the ethernet list in system preferences it does recegnised it but the the whole print server is not accessible on the network.
can someone with more experience help me set this up.
    thx

I didn't say it's impossible. I just offered an easy solution to your problem that will save you and you users some hassle in the long run (eg. when you come to troubleshoot you wn;t have to look at 2 networks and a firewall). I guess I just like easy solutions. And ,dude, 20 bucks...
If you want to go the hard(er) way you need to:
    1. set up a second network address range on the second card
    2. give the printer a fixed IP address within that range
    3. ensure firewall is not blocking packets from/to the printer
    4. config the printer on your print server & clients

  • Why is my HP LaserJet 1300n printer automatically set to "Paused"?

A couple of days ago I updated my Macbook from 10.6.6 to 10.6.8 OS.
I don't know if this caused the problem, but I just can't print anything, with no application at all.
The printer gets set to "Paused" and I just cannot change its status unless I delete the printing job, but as soon as I send any other document to the printer (via Airport Extreme) it sets again to "Paused" and nothing seems to help.
I've tried deleting the printer configuration, reinstalled driver, even tried setting the printer's IP manually but nothing seems to work.
    —Andy.

    Hey iteachosk!
On a different discussion someone suggested connecting thru USB directly. It worked!
I had to restart the printer identification, throwing away previous driver once both the printer and Macbook were connected via USB wire, thus the new driver was not the wireless kind.
This is not as comfortable as having a wireless connection, but it's ok while we find another solution.

  • Laserjet 1505 connected to AEB 802.11n via USB keeps timing out after print

I have a HP Laserjet 1505 connected on my AEB 802.11n via USB and shared on my network, on my network are two macs connected via wifi and 3 WinXP PC connected via wire. I have Bonjour and WinXP laserjet drivers installed on all Win PC. Everytime I print from any of the computers, it will print the first time, but when I try printing again from any of the machines, the macs and winxp pc's cannot detect the printer. When I go to airport utility, the printer cannot be detected anymore. I have to hard reset the AEB for it to detect the laserjet printer again. But the same thing happens again after I print out another document. Has anybody encountered this kind of problem. Can anyone help me resolve this?

Here is what I got from HP support :
The driver for the Laserjet P1006 is not available yet for Os 10.5...we are hoping it will be release in the next week or so...please click on the link below to sign up for an email update as soon as it is available..As a workaround, some people have been able to use the 10.4 driver from the cd, but this is not guaranteed to work in all applications therefore the only solution is to wait and install the 10.5 driver.
    So we wait.

  • Mac lost contact with HP color Laserjet 3700 via USB

    Hi,
Since a few days I can't get connection anymore with my HP color Laserjet 3700 via USB-cable. My Mac recognizes the printer with its name, also states when I plug in the USB that the printer is online. However, when I want to print documents, it states "wait until the printer is available" and no prints are generated.
Via an iMAC, I tried to print via the same USB cable, and that works fine. I tried rebooting, software updates, all the lot. Nothing worked. I found some technical details via About this MAC and the difference between my MacBook en iMAC is:
PPD-version = 16.4 on the iMAC and 17.3 on my MacBook
CUPS-version = 1.4.4 on the iMAC and 1.4.5 on my MacBook Pro
Who has any ideas what I can do the get printing again?
    Thx,
    Aldert

Via other threads I found the solution:
    see: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2640270&start=15&tstart=0
I had the same problem "Waiting for printer to become available... " - HP LaserJet 2500 L with iMAC 11.1 running Mac OS X Version 10.6.5. since the "HP Printer Software Update 2.5.2".
    This also helped for me:
    1) delete all of the items whose name starts with "hp_" in System/Library/Extensions
    2) Disconnect the printer and turn off the printer
    3) delete the printer if it's still there
    4) reset the printing system
    5) restart the Mac
    6) empty the trash
    7) turn on the printer and reconnect the printer to the MAC
    8) reinstall the printer
