HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g Devices and Printers Page Is Slow to Open

Hello, I have HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus, model N911g, installed as a wireless printer.  I have Windows 7 64-bit.  My Devices and Printers page takes over two minutes to open.  While I am waiting, if I go to Print Spooler Services and click Restart, the page opens right away.  Once the page is open, in the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus device, I ran Troubleshooter and it took about 1/2 hour to finish, and it reported and supposedly fixed a problem in the Print Spooler service.  The assigned Port looks like a recovered port.  However, if I restart the PC and try to open Devices and Printers again, the delay is still present.  I had trouble installing the HP program including the Scan to PC functionality, because response time was so slow.  Now it's installed and working, but the HP program is quite slow to open.  The spinning circle spins and then stops, almost like it has given up opening the program. Then several minutes later the program opens or the requested action begins.

Check the document I linked below. Step 6 might be the solution you are looking for but it will not hurt to start from the top.

  • Configuring "Scan To E-mail" on HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g

This is the same issue reported by several other users in this forum to which no solution has been provided.
I have been unsuccessful in setting up the scan to e-mail option for a HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g purchased on August 12th 2012 and using the firmware CLP1CN1150CR.
I am trying to do this through the Embedded Web Server interface to the printer from an iMac running Mac OS X 10.6.8 and HP Utility 5.8.0.  More specifically the page under "Scan -> Scan to E-mail -> Outgoing E-mail Profiles".
I have tried 2 different SMTP outgoing servers, each of which works well to send e-mail from the computer: Apple iCloud e-mail service (formerly known as Mobile Me, formerly known as .Mac) and AT&T Net e-mail service.  I verified that the server name, port number and authentication login/password values were all correct.
When scan to e-mail is used from the printer, I get an error message:  Cannot connect to server.  Check server name and address.
When tested from the computer during the setup of an outgoing e-mail profile, I get an error message:  The device could not send the test e-mail message. (EmailAccounts-timeout).
When I try to configure the page under "Settings -> E-mail Alerts -> E-mail Server" and use exactly the same values as the ones in the outgoing e-mail profile above, the Save and Test option fails with an error message:  The device could not send the test e-mail message.
Interestingly enough, I am able to use the computer's e-mail client with the option Scan To Computer -> E-mail as PDF or E-mail as JPEG.  With this option, the file is scanned and added as an attachment to a mail message from the Mail client under Mac OS X.  When I press the Send button, the e-mail is sent successfully through the same SMTP server.
All the error messages seem to indicate that the printer's e-mail client software is unable to establish a connection to the SMTP server.  However, it is not clear what configuration parameter is the one that could be causing the problem.
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

After further research, I noticed that there are other possible default Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) port values:
Port 25 is the standard SMTP port number.
Port 465 is the port number for SMTP over SSL, Secure SMTP (SSMTP).
Port 587 is the dedicated port number for a Mail Submission Agent (MSA) that uses a variant of the SMTP, as specified in RFC 6409, which requires that clients are authorized and authenticated to use the mail submission service.
I had been using port  number 25 as this is the standard one.  However, all tests were failing.  Hence, I decided to try the tests with ports numbers 465 and 587.
Port number 465 failed with the same errors listed above.  However, the tests passed with port number 587.  After saving the successful configuration with port number 587, I tried the scan to e-mail option from the printer and it worked.
A mail submission agent (MSA) is a computer program or software agent that receives electronic mail messages from a mail user agent (MUA) and cooperates with a mail transfer agent (MTA) for delivery of the mail.
Historically in Internet mail, both MTA and MSA functions use port number 25.  However, many Internet Service Providers (ISPs)  and enterprise or institutional networks restrict the ability to connect to remote MTAs on port 25.
With a dedicated port 587, it is always possible for users to connect to their domain to submit new mail.  Availability of a MSA on port 587 enables nomadic users to continue to send mail via their preferred submission servers even from within others' networks.  Using a specific submission server is a requirement when sender policies or signing practices are enforced.
I know that many users may find the technical details boring or confusing, but I just wanted to include some background to those who actually care about this level of detail.  I also wanted to provide a possible solution to other users who are experiencing the same problem.
So, in a nutshell, if the Scan To E-mail option is not working for you using port number 25, then try one of the other SMTP port numbers listed above.  If none of them work, check your mail provider for other possible outgoing server port numbers.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g - scanning stalls part way through

I have a HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g. When I try to scan a large number of documents from the printer to my computer, the printer stalls part way through. Today I had a stack of 45 pages that needed to be scanned. I loaded them into the document feeder on the top of the printer, hit "Scan", "To Computer", chose my computer from the list, "Save as pdf" and start scan.
The printer started scanning, got through about 30 pages and then just froze up. The display screen showed "Now Scanning". I let it sit for over a half an hour, but it did not resume. The only way to get out of the stalled scanning was to turn off the printer and restart it.
This has happened multiple times. Is there a limit on the number of documents that can be scanned at a time?

    Hello aksnell,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
In my experience the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus would be best suited to scan such a large amount using the software provided. The printer has a internal memory of 128 MB, that will fill up very fast when scanning into the computer.
I would recommend opening HP Scan on the computer, select .PDF and scan the pages this way. It will still feed from the Automatic Document Feeder and also save all pages to a single file when done.
If you need a hand scanning using the software, replay back with the Operating System installed on your computer, Windows or Mac.
    Thanks for posting.

  • OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus - N911g - refuses to print with an exhausted cartridge (yellow)

    Hi,
I owned this printer some months ago, and I have already substituted the black cartridge some times ago.
In fact, I usually use the b&w option to print my documents, and I use very little to no colors, instead.
Before deciding to buy this printer I had read the printer guide, which reports (translated from Italian):
[Printing with one or more cartridges exhausted]
The printer can work with one or more cartridges exhausted. However, printing with exhausted cartridges slows the printing process down and lowers the quality of the documents printed. If the black cartridge is exhausted, blacks are not going to be really dark. If a color cartridge is exhausted, the result is in the grey scale. As soon as possible, replace the exhausted cartridge. Don't remove the exhausted cartridge before you can replace it with a new one. [...]
    (screenshot attached)
The downloadable user-guide reports (no translation):
[Color cartridge very low on ink]
To temporarily print using black ink only, click Cancel Print and then re-send the print job. The
Use black ink only? message appears before the job prints. The empty cartridges will need to be
    replaced soon.
    (screenshot attached)
So, when I decided to go for this printer, knowing I substantially use black only for my studies and my work, I did take care of reading the entire printer guide and look for these specific official declarations by HP on the printer functionalities.
Additionally, I took care of disabling any HP protection and pages control on the cartridges before installing them, using the printer menu.
Today, instead, I've found out the printer won't print with an exhausted yellow cartridge. This is what the message window says (translated freely, again, from Italian):
    [Exhausted cartridge]
    HP 951 SETUP Yellow
Replace the cartridges in the list to be able to print.
HP advises not to remove the cartridge until you have a replacement one ready for installation.
Buttons are: [Buy online...] [Cancel printing] [?]
    (screenshot attached)
[?] leds to the words I've reported earlier.
I still have the "print just with the black cartridge" option enabled.
I tried cancelling the print and sending the print job again multiple times, as it is described in the guide, but no "Use black ink only?" message appears.
Before invoking and thinking to the "fraud", I ask, how am I going to be able to print, then?

The manual indicates the printer can temporarily use black only once a color cartridge is low.  Once the cartridge is depleted it will need to be replaced, otherwise damage to the printed may occur.
HP and other printer manufacturers have different printer technologies for different needs.
Some have printheads built into the ink cartridges.  These printers can typically print with one or more of the colors completely empty, or even with color or black (but not both) cartridges removed. The Deskjet 6980 series is an example.
Other printers have separate ink supplies and replaceable printheads.  An example would be the Officejet 8600. The printhead in these printers can be replaced if they are damaged by running the printhead with colors out.  Some of these printers will allow printing with a color out, other will not.  If the printer is run without ink in one or more colors the printer may be damaged, but the user may be able to recover without having to send the printer for service.
Other printers have permanent printheads.  To run these without some ink in all the colors would risk causing damage to the printhead due to clogs, air ingested in the printheadvor burned out printhead firing resistors. The Photosmart 3310 series is an example of this type of printer. For printers with fixed printheads this could require service to get the printer to print properly again when the ink is finally replaced.
The document here describes how ink is used.  While the document is written for HP Inkjet printers the same principles apply to inkjet printers from other manufacturers.

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Plus, N911g sends faxes, but won't receive

    Hello,
My printer will send faxes, but not receive them.
Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, SP1.  The printer is connected to the computer via wireless.  The phone is Comcast Digital Voice.  The printer is the only device connected to the phone line.  Per techs at Comcast, the phone line is functional.
I ran a Fax Test via the printer, and all items read "PASS".
I completed all the steps in the following link, "Cannot Send or Receive Faxes" found on the support forums, EXCEPT resetting the printer by unplugging the power cord while the printer is on.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02891758&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_r1002_us...
As per the instructions,  I sent a fax to the HP Fax Test Service.  The outgoing fax appeared to connect properly and send, as I heard the dial tone and connection sounds, and I received a fax confirmation, result "OK", from the printer. However, the return fax never arrived.
I also confirmed that the number set in the fax header in the Basic Fax Setup, is indeed my phone line number.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you,
    Jason

    Hey Jason,
I have ran into this situation quite a few times in my experiences with fax issues,  it very well could be the digital line itself. My last suggestions for you would be to try a power reset on the printer, and also try a filter on the fax line to see if that could help the line. If you are still having issues with sending faxes, give us a call to our technical support to see if there are any more options for you.
Press the Power button to turn on the product.
With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
    Wait at least 15 seconds.
Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button to turn it on.
Here is an example of a filter:

  • Officejet Pro 8600 Plus will not print but is connected and says that the print job is 100% Complete

    Hi All,
I'm printing from a MacBook Pro using OSX Lion. It says that Officejet Pro 8600 Plus is connected and that the print jop is
100% complete except that nothing comes out of the printer. I've done all of the test prints and they've printed just fine.
I tired all of the troubleshooting steps listed on the support guide and still nothing. HELP!

Not a reply but another plea for help.
There seem to be so many people with wireless problems that a) it seems silly to start a new thread and b) which one to enter my own plea.
-Printer bought about 2~3 weeks into Sept 2012
-Installed onto Macbook Pro running Lion (full updated at that time)
-Both wireless scanning from printer to computer and initiated from computer worked fine.
-Printer, with full choice of duplex, layout etc, worked fine. (Even left 5star feedback somewhere!)
-Set up eprint. That OK, too. Fine from iPad2 and SE Arc S printing photos.
-Somewhere along the line it stopped communicating with my MBP
-Out of interest, since there seemed to be no problems with an Acer laptop running Vista, I booted the MBP from an external drive on which I'd done a backup of my 10.6 system iMac (>300Km away: can't try that). Installed HP software from disc. Seemed fully functional. Odd. Very odd.
-Restarting with Lion on MBP, tried again. Looks as if it might work, but loses connectivity. Tried manual address on printer.
-Booting from 10.6 system again, reinstalled Lion on MBP (wondering if conflict between HP and Apple updates)
    -Reinstalled HP software from disc.
    Still didn't work.
-Brought Lion up to date. Downloaded most recent dmg file from HP. Looked for updates. Have applied firmware update to printer
8600 doesn't list my MBP as available computer to scan to
[But all the test pages done whilst in HP Utility, and others, get sent through]
Am getting rather fed-up with all this; never, ever before have I had so much printer problem.
There seem to be a number of Lion users out there with the same problem. So far -but very infrequently tried- other machines/systems seem OK, therefore I am coming to the conclusion that it is an Apple<> HP conflict. If not sorted soon the printer will be returned as it is not fit for purpose. I'll revert to using my seldom problematic, non duplex A3 Brother.
    Hrumph
Please help, someone! Either with a pointer to something I've not yet tried or by analysis and rapid availablity of updated software.
    Thanks,
    Mike W

Touch the front panel and use the back arrow if needed to get to the home screen.  Next touch the four ink droplets at the top right of the screen, then touch "Print Report".    Items 12-14 will be the total pages, color pages and borderless pages printed.

I insert an SD card full of photos into the built in card reader - but have no option to send the photos to a file on my computer. Does this product only print but not send to a computer?  I need to edit the photos before printing.

    Hi @Rodney88,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer N911g wont send SD imapges to computer, and I am happy to help!
According to your printer's user guide found at this website, HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g User guides, as well as this guide, Printing From a Memory Card or USB Flash Drive. This printer only supports printing from SD cards.
In order to transfer the files to your computer, you will need an SD Card reader for your computer.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g can not define a custom size paper.

HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g can not define a custom size paper.  I would like to have a custom size to work with a card making program.

    Can you help me out?
I have an HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911a
When I try to print to a custom print size (2.75" x 6" in my case), I get the same error everyone else is reporting: "Paper detected does not match paper size or type selected. Make sure the paper size or type is correct to continue the job."
I am currently trying to print using Microsoft Word for Mac 2011 version 14.4.5, but I have the same problem with printing from Adobe Reader 9.8.5 or Preview 8.0.
    I am running OS X Yosemite 10.10.
My printer's firmware is "up to date" as of 28-Aug-2014.
    This is what I did:
    1. Open System Preferences from the Apple menu.
    2. Click on the Printers & Scanners icon.
    3. Click on the + sign under the list of printers to add a printer
    4. Click on IP
    5. Enter my IP address in the Address field (verified as "valid and complete host name or address")
    6. Ignore Protocol field (default is Line Printer Daemon - LPD)
    7. Ignore Queue field (default is blank for default queue)
    8. Ignore Name field (default is IP address)
    9. Ignore Location field (default is blank)
    10. Under the Use dropdown menu, I select "Select Software"
    11. HP Deskjet 9800 is not an option.
I searched for 9800, but there is no HP printer with that number in the options.
I tried selecting "HP DeskJet 980C - Gutenprint v5.2.3" to see if that would work, but I received the same error message as above. I tried selecting other random HP printers, but so far I've had no luck.
I've been googling about for a way to manually add a printer driver to this "Select Software" list, but I've found nothing (apparently, no one else wants to do this). I did not find a driver download for the HP DeskJet 9800 for OS X Yosemite 10.10 on the Drivers & Software section of the hp.com website.
Additional details on settings for Microsoft Word for Mac 2011 version 14.4.5:
Selected File > Page Setup from menu
Under the Paper Size drop down menu, I selected manage custom size.
    - Click + to add a paper size
    - Enter "2.75" in width and "6 in" height in the paper size fields.
    - Enter "0 in" as the User Defined Non-Printable Area for top, left, right and bottom.
    - Double-clicked Untiled in the custom size list and rename the size as Receipt
    - Click OK to return to the Page Setup dialog box
    Under Settings: Page Attributes:
    - Format for "HP Officejet Pro 8600"
    - Paper size: Receipt
    - Orientation: "tall/portrait"
    - Scale: 100%
    - Click OK
Select Format > Document and set all page margins to 0.25"
    Thank you.

Hi there @Mizia , Welcome to the HP Forums!
I saw your post about your Officejet 8600 Plus disconnecting from your wireless network, and I hope to help. I have some suggestions for you to try below that could help re-establish the connection between the two!
Try power cycling the network devices:
Turn off the printer and computer and unplug the router for 1 minute (do not press any buttons on the router).
Plug the router back in and wait another minute, next turn on the printer and computer.
Try the steps in this document:

Hopefully the connection is back when you're done the steps above. If there are any issues, please let me know the details and also include with OS you're running on your computer.

It might have said something about BIOS
    4. Any changes made to your system before the issue occurred
No, all I did was install the software that came on the Officejet disc
I don't know what to do. I tried to create an adhoc network, and that didn't work. I tried to connect it via usb cable and the whole computer crashed. I tried to set up a router and then it would not connect to the internet.
Why is this design so flawed? Every wireless printer I have had does this and will not work easily or permanently. You should just be able to connect instantly to your computer and voila, you can print. But nothing seems to work. Mind you, the constant variable here is me, and I have little patience for spending days trying to get this to work. But I am a student, and this is holding back valuable study time.
    What do I do???
Any advice appreciated...can someone tell me step by step how to do this? I followed the instructions in the books, but ended up well...you know, so that's why I'm here.

I had the same issue, officejet pro 8600 plus causing blue screen of death on my new computer. After several frustrating months trying everything, I fould that my new computer has 3.1 USB ports, this printer doesnt like them, they need a 2.1 USB port.
For whatever reason USB ports are not backwards compatible, so I plugged the USB cable into the 2.1 port and no more crashes.
3.1 ports are blue, 2.1 ports are black ( the plastic inside)

My brahd-new Officejet Pro 8600 Plus prints part of page and quits.  The manual said to clean the print heads and align the printer.  I did both of those.  It made the problem worse.   I'm printing on photo paper - HP Premium Plus.  It happens about 1/2 the time.

    Hi beantowner2,
I would like to begin with a few questions,
Does this happen when you copy a photo, or only when you print form the computer?
Do you have the printer connected directly to a wall outlet or a surge protector?
What operating system and version is on the computer?
Is the printer connected to the computer with a USB cable or wirelessly?
If you have a WIndows operating system please download and install the latest firmware version for the printer. HP Officejet Pro 8600 N911g_n Firmware.

  • Have officejet pro 8600 plus and it prints photos to dark on regular or advanced photo paper?

have a officejet pro 8600 plus printer and whenever i print a photo out , either on regular or advanced photo paper it always comes out darker then the actual photo.

Belive it or not this is acctually normal.  Most photos will print a little darker than they appear on screen.  This is due to the way the picture is coded and the brightness level on your monitor.  You could try following the steps in this document to imporve the quality, but I'm pretty everything is doing what it should.  If the colors are completely distorted, let me know and I'll see what I can find.
