HP Z820 Workstation

In HP Z820 Workstation, the no. of Ports/Slots can be configured to Minimum so as to reduce system ?If so what is the minumum no. of slots/ports required .?
What is the role of PCl graphics slot ?

Hi,
Please do not post same question many times.
  http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Hardware/hpz820-workstation/m-p/1597209#M74031
The role of PCI graphics slot is for adding a video card to it. What are you going to do with this machine ?
Regards.

  • Dilemma as to HP Z820 Workstation System BIOS version 3.88 Update

On HP Drivers & software Support page, URL: http://h20566.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=5225043&swItemId=wk_149650_1&swEnvOid=4059#tab2 it is stated that the latest v. 3.88 BIOS update for Z820 will display an error message and fail to boot if Management Engine firmware is not the right version for the processor. This statement poses a real dilemma in my case: My Z820 is one of the first of its kind, dating back to mid 2012. It incorporates the original version of Intel Xeon processors E5-2670. It arrived originally installed with Intel ME firmware version 7.1.21.1134 and Boot Block Date 12/28/2011. After 2 years of relatively safe operation, the Z820 failed, and HP On-Site support replaced its motherboard with a brand new one: Its Boot Block Date is 03/06/2013 with Intel ME firmware version 8.1.52.1496. However, the same original pair of Intel Xeon processors E5-2670 remained and are still running safely in position on the new motherboard. They did not fail so they were not replaced. So now, if I update BIOS to v. 3.88, it may detect the "unsupported combination of processor and Management Engine firmware" and prevent system boot... Should I update BIOS? At present it is v.3.87. Please advise.

You had an original type motherboard and original type processors. The newer (HP calles them Revision 1) type motherboards with the later boot block date did not lose their ability to run the original type processors, as you have experienced. Those can run all the older approved processors and also the newer listed processors in the QuickSpecs. The "unsupported configuration" is running the newer type processors with the older type IME firmware in place. I have updated all of our Z620s to the 3.88 version of BIOS, and we have both original and revision 1 type motherboards (with both the original and newer type of processors in our revision 1 type motherboards) with zero problems. Update of the IME firmware, if you wish, requires fiddling, but has never failed me either. That, of course, is different from updating the IME software. I always update BIOS from within BIOS now... unpack the 3.88 SP for the BIOS updater and harvest the .bin file from the DOS folder that gets placed on the root level of C drive along with the other parts. You only need that .bin file. Place that on a thumb drive, top level, and boot into F10 with that inserted ahead of power up... then you can navigate to the USB stick for the BIOS update. It is safer to do these BIOS updates when not booted into Windows, in my opinion.

  • Z820 slow video rendering

    Hi,
I work in a video production studio that is primarily Mac-oriented. We have two z820 workstations we want to incorporate into our workflows, and have upgraded them with 32gb RAM, Zturbo SSDs and Nvidia Quadro 5000 GPUs. We are hoping to get these stations to render as quickly or more quickly than the standard 2014 iMacs we have in the studio, but so far the machines are rendering a 4.5 minute 5K video sequence in about 12 minutes, as opposed to the Mac's 3 minutes.
I was wondering if anyone on this forum had famliarity with video editing (we use Adobe Premiere Pro) and GPU maximization. We're trying to get the z820s to at least match their Mac counterparts.
Currently the windows machines beat the Macs in transcoding and ingesting footage, going about 5x faster while transcoding Quicktime or R3D files into 1920 x 1080 HD quicktime, so I'm pretty sure they have the processing power to get the renders we want, i'm just not sure what video card/computer settings I might need to mess with to get there.
Any and all help is much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Zach

    @ZFinch
    Hi,
I have had some more time to think about your rendering issue.  Please post your hardware configuration and Product Number.
How large are the data objects?
Think of your rendering process like a single transaction much like when you do an online query to a server. If just one of your transactions are slow then you may have a data object problem. Just for now temporarily assume that the hardware platform is stable but you can test that assumption by running some diagnostics if you so desire.
If all of the transactions are slow then think of the time line for the transaction. Typically the time line looking at the transaction linearly, is made up of three major queuing components: CPU, memory and I/O. You can start the Windows resource monitor before doing the rendering process and then look at the recorded results to determine where the bottlenecks reside.  Are all of the expected number of processors and threads running at 100%? Is the memory utilization at maximum for the 32 GB?  Are you seeking a lot of hard faults? Look at the disk queue length and I/O activity.  What do you see? Historically with transactions, I/O is the biggest bottleneck.
What are your biggest performance bottlenecks with your rendering process?  Once you give me some more information then I can make some more suggestions.  The above graphics that I had referenced may not solve your issue.

    Hi there
I have Hp z820 workstation but i made a mistake for buying a graphics card. i had to buy K2000 but i bought K2000D and HP does not give support to my card..it just gives on linux. isn t strange?
what i am going to do?

This is a consumer to consumer forum.
    I don't work for HP.
You can contact the HP Executive Team at the link below, and address the matter with them, I suppose.

  • Slow preview playback in After Effects

    Hi Folks
I just recently set up CS6 on a new z820 workstation and for some reason my after effects timeline does not playback in realtime when previewing.  Everything is green on the timeline, yet when it plays it is about half speed.  I have no doubt my system has the specs to play rendered media in real time (2x8core, Quadro 4000, 64GB Ram, Sonnet hard drive array) so obviously I have something set up wrong.  I'm running a Kona 3 with the latest drivers and I suspect this is the culprit.  I've had other issues related to the Kona, such as losing display to my external monitors sporadically.  It will be fine for a while then suddenly the output signal turns either solid green or some form of garbled junk.  Very strange, although the Kona output seems perfectly fine when I'm in Premiere.
Anyhow, any help zeroing in on the problem would be greatly appreaciated.
    Best,
    EE

    Thanks Tom
However, I do think I have playback set to computer monitor (not in front of system right now).  Definitely seems like there's something AE doesn't like about my card (it is an older version of the Kona 3).  I have a support ticket in with AJA so hopefully that will turn up something.
As far as my Quadro 4000 goes, I was kind of forced into using it on account of other software on my system.  If it was up to me, I would have put in a GTX680 or 690.  I have a GTX680 at home and it is rock solid in AE and Premiere.  Timelines that are heavily dependant on GPU accelerated FX render about twice as fast on my 6-core/GTX680 vs my z820/Quadro 4000 work system.  I'm hoping to upgrade to the Quadro 5000K when it comes out, possibly with the Tesla sidekick.  In the meantime, I have to sort out this Kona thing

  • Why is Photoshop CC 64-bit is slower than 32-bit?

I have a very powerful system.
    HP Z820 Workstation
    Intel Xeon CPU E5-2670 0 @ 2.60 GHz (2 processors)
    64 GB RAM
    64-bit OS
    Windows 7 Pro
Nvidiea GeForce GTX 690 (2 GPUs) 4 GB VRAM ea.
But here's the deal. When I'm painting or drawing down to the pixels within Photoshop CC 64-bit, it crawls, the lag is so great!  I have caching on an SSD card even.  Then I had an idea, I switched to the 32-bit version of Photoshop CC and everything is good, it's faster than the 64-bit version.
What gives?!?  Why would the 32-bit version be faster than the 64-bit version?

I know, it's VERY odd. I can actually do things faster in 32-bit mode Photoshop CC. I'm painting a very large digital painting. 180 dpi, at 40" x 24" (for print) - When I first started painting it, I was using Adobe Photoshop CS5 and it was very smooth to paint it, very fast.  But now I've upgraded to Photoshop CC and the 64-bit is VERY slow, and lags terribly.   Then just on a whim, I opened up Photoshop CC 32-bit and could paint just the way I did with the old CS5, very fast and smooth.  It's like Photoshop CC 64-bit was a major step down in performance.
    Here's my system info.

  • Z420 recovery

Since HP no longer provides the recovery D: partition or HP_TOOLS partition on their recovery media, I am out of luck.  Would anyone like to send me a copy of their partitions so I can reinstall.  I would be happy to work with anyone on this.
HP Z Series Workstations - HP is Changing the Recovery Media Solution
    Release Date: 2014-06-09
    Last Updated: 2014-06-09
DETAILS OF CHANGEEffective July 1, 2014, HP is changing the recovery media solution offered for HP Z420, Z620, and Z820 Workstations running Windows 7 Professional.
Current and past Cyberlink Recovery Media consisted of the image shipped from the factory split between multiple DVDs. The new recovery method has a specific operating system version on one DVD, and another DVD which contains hardware enabling drivers as well as certain applications that come preinstalled on the system.
    SUPPORT URLhttp://www.hp.com/go/bizsupport
REASON FOR CHANGEThis change allows the customer to select the destination drive for the operating system, as well as the hard drive partition.
IMPACT OF CHANGEThe recovery image will no longer be the same as the image shipped on the system from the factory. The operating system installation will resemble an installation from Microsoft media.
A restore to the factory image will remain available on the hard drive, via the F11 HP System Recovery process.
    DATE OF CHANGEEffective Date: 2014-07-01
Hardware Platforms Affected: HP Z420 Workstation, HP Z620 Workstation, HP Z820 Workstation
Components Affected: HP Z Series Workstation Recovery Media

  • .edl opening error

    hi
i've got a problem when importing an .edl file in speedgrade. (when i want to add it on the timeline)
    here is a screenshot:
    http://kepfeltoltes.hu/120712/error_www.kepfeltoltes.hu_.png

    I've got a similar problem:
    Hello,
I've got a problem with an Edl and a few questions regarding working with Speedgrade:
I'm working on the Grade for a movie trailer for a friend and wanted to use Speedgrade for the first time on an actual project. Because he used Premiere Pro to edit the Trailer he sent me all the files (including the PP project) so that I could generate all the files I need for myself. The actual movie files were all tiff sequences (actually there were just 2 tiff sequences but the cuts were all in PP-maybe they had exported the cut from AFX and made the cuts a second time in PP, but I'm not sure) so I wanted to use an EDL from Premiere and relink the tiffs to it. Because the media was on 2 video tracks in Premiere I had to export 2 EDLs*. I then jumped to Speedgrade to open the cut. The first EDL worked fine and I could open it without a problem but it didn't let me relink the tiff sequence in the reel section. I the tried the second EDL which has most of the cuts and I got the following error:
I tried to first load the tiff seq into the timeline and then drag th EDL onto it but got the following error message
What does it mean? I tried exporting with different settings but none of them worked for me. At the end I used the send to Speedgrade command to get it to work. It didn't bring in all the cuts but with a the scene analysis tool and bit of manual tweaking I got it to work. When working on a short project like this trailer it was ok to do it this way but I'm not sure how I would have done it on an actual movie.
*Question: Is EDL really the best way because it just lets me choose one video track at a time, so for a project with lets say 6 video tracks I would have to export 6 EDLs? How is the workflow with more than one EDL? Do I have to open all the different EDLs and relink the media, then grade one EDL at a time, export all the different EDLs at the End and combine them back to one video file in PP or AFX?
And now the addition question I have:
The trailer is 1920x1080 and I'm on a quiet powerful Z820 Workstation with a two monitor set up but I got a lot of spinning beach balls/freezing of the Speedgrade when playing back the Grade. It was really annoying because it slowed the work down quiet a bit. I looked into the preferences but couldn't find a lot of settings to tweak to get rid of the problem. I encreased the ram cache to around 75% and used the option to downsample the footage but the I had the same problems with the 960x540 verion of the footage. Is this normal with 1080p DPX footage? Are there any other settings I could change to make Speedgrade work a bit smoother? I had no addition software running except Acrobat so that I could look into the Manual.
    Thanks for your help :-)
As Dennis mentioned I've opened the EDl in a texteditor. I hope that'S the one the right oe because as mentioned I tried a few different ones but none of them worked and I always got a similar/the same error

I have the problem, that i can´t render a very tiny project in AME CC (adobe media converter) while the rendering in AE CC with the cue works.
My Project contains one comp (ray traced 3D) with 4 layers of which one is a light, one is a camera, and two are 3D Layers of animated graphic elements (the first contains three animated .ai-Layers and the second 3 pictures and an animated extruded Form).
I can see rendered frames in the project in AE CC in under one second but when i try to render it in the media encoder (AME CC), the rendering process is extremly slow. If Adobe would offer the h.264 (mp4) codec in AE CC, i would have no problem, but since its only available in AME, i need to render it with the AME.
My Memory Allocation in AE CC is: 21GB used for AE, MP on with 8 Cores (and 2GB for every Core), disk cache is activated with 12GB on a SSD only used for caching, which contains also the media database and the media cache.
When i try to render the project with AME, the pc uses every core, despite than using 8, causing 100% cpu usage on all 12 cores (although 2 cores are reserved for other programs).
Rendertime AE CC (Quicktime, FullHD, h.264, 5mbit): 3:16min
Rendertime AME CC (Quicktime, FullHD, h.264, 5mbit): stopped after 6 Minutes with 1/4 of the clip rendered, AME CC hangs causing 100% CPU usage
Another project, which is rendering fine in AE CS6 (the second mentioned in the start post), renders super slow in AE CC (30sec (CS6) compared to 1:44min (CC) max per frame), so that i have to come to the conclusion, that there some issues with the AME CC Rendering Engine.
I´am in motion graphics and video cutting for 15 years now, but had never such problems with rendering my projects.
