Passcode Locked or Disabled
If nothing else will let you unlock the device - after so many unsuccessful attempts will be locked out - You have to restore the device within iTunes. You want to use the same computer that you always sync with so that you can restore your app data and settings. You can restore with any other computer, but you will lose everything on the Device.

Attempted to Install 2.3 upgrade,installer folder installed into harddrive but application will not open or replace 2.0 as it says it "should" . I have tried too many times now. Always same response.

when I went to the library folder there was no receipts only

so I guess that means something is missing?

Have you tried rebooting for the Mac and iPod to see if that helps? To reset the iPod, press and hold both the Select/Center and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
It wouldn't hurt to also try plugging the iPod into another USB port and use a different USB sync cable.

You might be able to re-enable it via this page : http://appleid.apple.com, then 'reset your password'
You might then need to log out of your account on your phone by tapping on your id in Settings > iTunes & App Store and then log back in so as to 'refresh' the account on it.
If that doesn't fix it then you might need to contact iTunes Support : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page

Wipe it clean and restore it. You should then be able to rename the iPod and set up an account with iTunes. I hope this helps!

I have been trying to work through this problem by myself and have so far downloaded the most current version of iTunes. Frome there when it tells me I have to authorize this computer, I had to not put in the iPad information, I had to authorize with my current iTunes information, and any iPad or iPod, iPhone information. I have several people in the family that have different accounts, so I had to authorize each and every individual account because I didnt know which apps or music was purchased under which user. I've downloaded the new security patch 3 times in the last couple of weeks, put it in my applications and from there onto the dashboard, and Firefox keeps telling me that I need to download it again. This is crazy... Firefox can't recognize it's own application???

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
