HT1338 Macbook pro mac os 10.6.8 software update segment fault
I recently tried to update a few software on my macbook pro, but apparently software update crashed while it ran in the process.
So I cannot update any softwares since it won't work at all. I even tried to run softwareupdate on command line and it gave me
"segement fault". Any idea how to fix this problem?

Download the combo update (don't install it yet): http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1400
SafeBoot your computer: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1455
While in SafeBoot install the combo update
Restart the computer to come out of SafeBoot
Try running software update again and see if it works.

Ok, back to the issue at hand, the Prof. is right. In none of the OP's participation, nor in any of his choir of followers save mommy power is there the least hint of what Apple product is failing. While y'all get a move on and disgorge the details, may want to try a Safe Boot. Hold down the Shift key prior to the startup chime and wait awhile. IF it starts, then it means you have some third-party software that's causing the problem. Else there's a strong probability a complete reinstall will occur in your near future.
In the future and in spite of what some purists may say, be sure to service the system disk BEFORE patching. By "service" I mean booting up the Mac using your Install DVD (Snow Leopard or priors) or booting in Recovery Mode (Command R, in the Lions and successors), running the Disk Utility found in that mode and doing a Repair Disk and Repair Disk Permissions. Until NO errors show up. Cause patching up an already damaged system will only make things worse. -

hi guys my macbook pro with retina display wont restart after i try to do software update to 10.7.5 it goes to a grey software update screen but wont do anything. i can use drop down menues but nothing is active and i cant bring up the dock. im new to mac and not great with technical terms. please guys really need your help to restart or even shutdown my computer to perform software updates.

It says it cant connect because of a network problem, but when I run a network diagnostic it says there is no problem. Please help meNo specific update. Macbook pro cooling fan runs continuously after software update
I updated Mountain Lion last night (Mar 15, 2013). I forgot the version number, but it was 10.8.? I think.
After restarting the computer this morning, the cooling fan suddenly shot up, making crazy noise. It didn't come back, so I had to turn the computer off with physical switch. While the fan was running, battery was draining so fast. I began with 100%, but went to 65% in 45 minutes. Such thing never happened before. I did not run the computer with complicated Apps when it happened. I was using Safari and Logos Bible software. Does it have anything to do with the new software?
It is quiet right now, after restarting. I paid more than $2k for this computer last fall. Didn't have any problems yet. But it happened all of a sudden. Anyone has any idea??Next time this should happen try a SMC reset:

i had a problem similar to yours and better yet, i have the fix for it. i downloaded maverick 4 months ago and was without itunes ever since. all itunes icon did was bounce. itunes would never open and whats more, is when i would try to update it, i would get a "thank you for downloading itunes!" page , but the download would never work. so i scoured the net for solves. nothing that worked. <4 months later> then last night i took a new approach. i decided even though maverick would not allow me to uninstall itunes, i would find a way to uninstall itunes. then i would reinstall back to 11.1.5 i was successful and heres what i did.
step one-
Back up your iTunes Library.itl file, found under ~/Music/iTunes
(even tho i didnt, i only had 3 artists in there at the time. and they didnt get erased but i advise you back up just in case.)
step two-
download itunes 10.7 from apple. i used this link Download it from Apple here
(i pulled the link from Aarons website (awesometast.com). you download 10.7 however you want but i used the link above and have had no issues).
although im not sure you need to do this step ( you may be able to download 11.1.5 itunes without 10.7, i did because i was following intructions from http://awesometoast.com/downgrading-to-itunes-10-7-from-itunes-11-on-osx/
step 3-
open Terminal
step 4-
enter in these 3 commands hitting return after each line. 1st line nothing seems to happen, 2nd line nothing seems to happen and 3rd line gives you a warning and requires password to continue. when i did it, my password didnt appear as i entered it and i hit return without looking, so i entered it in again, although im not sure i had to the 2nd time.
killall iTunes
killall "iTunes Helper"
sudo rm -rf /Applications/iTunes.app/
step 5-
drag off and dump the itunes icon (which now has the ? shadow in it) off your dock.
step 6-
install 10.7 itunes you downloaded earlier. (not sure if this part is neccesary. you may be able to just download 11.1.5 but i downloaded 10.7 because i was following Aarons steps.) itunes now works.
step 7-
go to apple and update to 11.1.5 itunes. install it. open it and you have itunes 11.1.5 in perfect working order. assuming you have a decent internet speed for the downloads, the whole process takes very little time.
with those steps above, you can solve itunes just bouncing and not launching issues and also the "thank you for downloading" and nothing downloads issue. enjoy. also i would like to give a shout out to http://awesometoast.com and thank Aaron for the knowledge that enabled me to get itunes back into my life. -
I bought a new MacBook Pro (Mac Os 10.8.4) when conecting my mobile broadband dongle (Huawei E122) the computer does not read it at all. I do not have problems when connecting it to my former computer (PC) and a Mac from last year. Any suggestions?

Yes, I did that. They have uppgrades for the dongles, but just untill Mac Os 10.7. Their solution is to buy a new modem from them or getting one for free if I sign a contract for 24 months! So, i think from that side not very helpful.
It is just that I do not want to buy a new modem, when it works in quite recent computers and after having spent money in the new Mac.

i made a dual boot of windows 7 and mac os x lion in my macbook pro .i installed m icrosoft support software also. now, can i install windows updates? do i turn on the automatic updating of updates? does hot fix of microsoft i.e, " support.microsoft.com/kb/979491" helps in stop freezing in dual boot mechanism?
Windows has a software updater built into Windows and when you install the Boot Camp drivers then it will install an Apple software updater also. I believe Windows is set to automatically download and install your updates as does the Apple software Updater. They both will update the individual files it needs to periodically.
"Microsoft updates" and "Windows updates" are basically the same thing in Windows. Are you talking about the "Windows support software" when downloading from Boot Camp Assistant? Apple installs a software updater for it's Boot Camp drivers in Windows 7 so you can do it manually or automatically.
The "Hot Fix" your referring to is only for certain motherboards built from other Windows only computer manufacturers and does NOT pertain to any Apple computers.

i enjoy karaoke and have numerous vcd's of karaoke songs. I wanted to make a compilation vcd of my own, containing my favourite karaoke songs but I am unable to achieve this on my macbook pro (mac os 10.6.8). Can you tell me how to step by step?
I had issues in 10.4.7 as well as 10.4.8.
My problems occurred at the beginning of 10.4.8, then many users brought light to me using WEP, which was not working that great. I changed my connections to WPA2 and my problem has disappeared. If my problem didn't resolve the way it did, I would have mentioned it the next time I visited an apple store.
The bottom line is that assumptions, complaining, and self diagnostics don't get many people very far and bringing the problem to apple helps them know the incidence of this problem, and helps them develop a reliable solution.
Though some users have reported the "cold shoulder" when reporting Airport problems to apple... I hope you weren't one of them. -

If it's a Core Duo Mac, no.
If it's a Core 2 Duo or better Mac, phone the online Apple Store and order a Mac OS X DVD, and if the computer can't run 10.8, a download code for 10.7.

Why no 1080p HD video on macbook pro/mac mini from itunes store?
Why can't you play 1080p video on a macbook pro or mac mini? This means you have to sync files which are over 1GB in size one at a time to the new ipad just to view them and this takes a long time. When at home, I use itunes via a macbook pro/mac mini for all my multi media connect to my TV, now I have GB's of files I cannot watch at home.
It kind of defeats the object, there is not enough space on an ipad to hold much HD content, certainly I will not be buying anymore HD video files from itunes for this reason. I am dissapointed to have wasted money on 1080p videos that I have to sync one at a time to a new ipad just to watch them. The new ipad screen is great but surely we need the option to watch 1080p HD video on out TV too? The crazy thing is that itunes/quicktime can easily handle 1080p video which is not from the itunes store so Apple must be deliberately restricting itunes bought 1080p HD video to the new ipad. One question.... why?I use a 2010 MB to view my 1080 HD content from iTunes. It's connected to a 24" Samsung monitor. Plays back perfectly.
How old is your MBP? I have a 2008 black MB that handles 720HD content but stutters on 1080. It plays them but the picture isn't smooth as it should be.
