Welcome to Apple Communities
If you use Snow Leopard or newer, open App Store and buy 10.8. You will see an error if the Mac isn't compatible

You haven't mentioned which version of Lightroom, but anything from 4 up should be no problem. Here's a link to the Lr5 requirements http://www.adobe.com/uk/products/photoshop-lightroom/tech-specs.html

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
OS 10.6 Snow Leopard is once again available from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard.

  • Want to update operating systems

Hello, I have a Mac Book, version 10.6.8. I'd like to purchase Mountain Lion so that I can then update to Mavericks. I'd like to confirm whether or not Mountain Lion supports my Mac. I bought it in Nov. 2007 and I'm not sure if this would be an issue.... And will Mavericks be supported by my mac after I download Mountain Lion?  Thanks for the help in advance.

You don't need to purchase Mountain Lion in order to upgrade to Mavericks if you have 10.6.8 already installed. But your computer must be able to run Mountain Lion or Mavericks. However, Mavericks will not run on your model.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • HT1338 trying to update from 10.5.8 to Mountain Lion .....

    - Geek Squad said to download and then reload from Time Machine.  However, I can't get my Mac to download.  When I check for updates, I get the message I am up to date.  Any suggestions?

Huh?  Download from Time Machine to upgrade system version???  You have to buy Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion.  That is assuming your computer can even run either of them.

  • I know if I want to update my 0S x.5 to Mountain Lion, I have to update to Snow Leopard and Lion first. Where do I find the Snow Leopard download?

I'm trying to upgrade my daughter's computer for college. She currently has OS 10.5.8. She needs to upgrade to Mountain Lion. I know I have to upgrade to Snow Leopard and Lion first. I can't find the download for either. Please help!  I was in the site the other day and thought I saw a link, but now I can't find it.
    Thanks.

There is no download for Snow Leopard and never was for the general public. Phone the Apple Store and buy it.
Purchasing Lion isn't necessary to get Mountain Lion, but you will need to run the Mac OS X 10.6.8 combo updater.

  • HT4623 Can't update Operating System

I need to update operating systems but the option is not in my General menu.  Any idea what I should do?

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 then you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11). You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes (on iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC), and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button
    Updating to iOS 5+ : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972
An iPad 1 will update to iOS 5.1.1, an iPad 2 and 3 to iOS 6.0.1

I updated operating system to OS X Yosemite, also updated pages. Now when I try to open files I am told to update pages

You have both Pages 5.5.2 and your older version of Pages on your Mac .
Pages 5.5.2 ids in your Applications folder.
Pages '08/'09 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
When you double click on a file either version may open, but usually the older, and it can not open files from the newer version.
Right click on the file instead and choose which version to open from.

  • HT4972 if i want to update my system using a new itunes library would my old data go

if i want to update my system using a new itunes library would my old data

I was concerned about this when I got my new iMac last year and had to say goodbye to my old emac (sob!) In the end I had to copy all my tunes etc onto an external hard drive and transfer to the iMac. I think I had to do that in this scenario, but now I have a new iPad when I connect to iTunes on iMac it shows that I can sync and transfer the iTunes stuff if I wanted. I would be extra safe and back up the old tunes first on an external disk, esp if you have loads. I back up my stuff even now from my iMac iTunes as I don't even want to think about how much the stuff is worth!!
