If you connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes you can force a backup of it by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand sidebar of iTunes and selecting 'Backup' (on iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC)
Before starting the update you should copy any purchases off it to your computer via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand sidebar, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button

I have an iPad that I want to update to IOS 5.1. I have several apps that each were installed using a different iTunes ID. How can I update the IOS without losing the apps?
To update your phone requires using the latest version of iTunes, on your computer, as well as Internet access. The update to iOS 5.0 or higher is an erase/restore deal, so you not only have to make sure all of the content, currently on your phone, is on your computer and accessible, you need to update iTunes first, have Internet access, then update your phone. There is no way around this fact. You could go to an Apple store or use another computer, but you run the risk of losing all of your data it you do that.

Hello there, Learning.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great, basic troubleshooting steps for issues with Wi-Fi on an iOS device:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1398
If the issue persists after performing the initial recommended steps, then try the following:
Unable to access the Internet while connected to Wi-Fi
If you're using a public or commercial network, you may need to log in or subscribe.
Check to see if you have a self-assigned IP address:
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected and tap .
If your IP address is 169.254.xxx.xxx, you may not be able to access the Internet.
If you do not have a self-assigned IP address, see if other Wi-Fi devices on your network have Internet access.
If they do not, consult with your network administrator or ISP for further assistance.
If they do, reset network settings on your device by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including:
previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
recently used Bluetooth accessories
VPN and APN settings
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
Cheers,

Updated to iOS 6.1 and now have a framed gray screen and phone not functioning
Updated to iOS 6.1 this morning and since, my iphone 4S has had a gray sceen w vertical lines. I've reset, restored, everything I could possibly do by googling, etc... Am out of options and would appreciate any help... Thank you!
Or someone please, put me out of my misery... I've wasted most of the day trying to fix this bc I rely on it for work and don't have time to take it somewhere. SOOOO frustrating. Am I out of luck? Its a weird gray screen with a faded border. iTunes seems to think everything is fine... I guess it could be just a screen thing. Doesn't make sense why it would happen after an update. So wish I could just go back to previous version. any educated input would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to update my sons generation 4 iPod…i do know that there is a way to update his iPod to iOS 6.I do have a Mac Desktop.Could someone please help me ??!! Is there a way to hook it up to my Mac Desktop and update?
Update it from iTunes on a computer as described at the bottom of this article; there isn't a Software Update option in General on iOS versions prior to 5.0. It can only be updated directly to the newest iOS release supported by the device’s hardware, which is iOS 6.1.6 for a fourth generation iPod touch.

I have a lot of applications on Facebook that I want to delete. Friends keep sending cute litttle things., like flowers, hugs,, smiles ......you know...those hugs. com apps. and so on and so forth! When you send them back, you open them allowing them to get your info, then they uh..have you. So...now I would like to eradicate these from cluttering up my computer. I have an ipod touch and am trying to update ios to 5.1 from 4.2.1. When I connect to itunes, it says it is up to date but it is not. How do I update?
Please verify the model number from the back. If it is A1288, it is a 2nd generation unit and can not be upgraded beyond 4.2.1

I want to update from ios 4.3 on my ipad 2. When I connect to itunes(newest version is installed) on pc, and attempt the update, I get a message to backup , or l will lose items purchased on the ipad. I don't have icloud yet, because when I try to add it to my ipad, I am told I need the newest version of ios. So it's a vicious cycle! I tried to buy itunes match, and I wasn't able to do that either! I have downloaded books, and songs on ipod that aren't able to be in my itunes library from CDs. What should I do and in which order, to protect my stuff from getting lost with the update?
Backup with iTunes. If iTunes is asking you if you want to backup, say yes to that and it will backup your iPad. Have you ever synced with this computer before?
My boilerplate response for anyone that wants to update the iOS.
What you should do anytime that you update the device is to transfer purchases from the iPad into iTunes - File>Transfer Purchases - and you should backup the iPad as well. When you update the update the device, if something goes wrong, you can restore from the backup.
However, iTunes should ask if you want to backup before you update, but just in case create the backup yourself before you update. The backup contains your app data and settings - along with other items - so make sure you backup first.
If you have any other important files, you may want to transfer them to your computer as well, prior to the update.

I have an iPhone 4 with IOS 4.2.6. I recently received an iPad with IOS5.1.1. I want to update my IOS on my phone but the computer I use is no longer hooked up to the Internet. What do I need to do? Also, does my iTunes need to be updated? It is whatever was available last July. Thank you for your time and courtesy!

I have an iPhone 5 running IOS 6.1.4 and I don't want to update to IOS 7 because I don't like it. Can I download the security fix 6.1.6 or am I now going to have to go with 7.0.6 for this phone?
This was my question exactly. Thanks for getting to the answer even though it's not what I wanted to hear. When I tried calling Apple earlier today to get an answer, I was unceremoniously disconnected twice while on hold for several minutes.

i have ios 4.2.1 on my iphone4, now i want to udate it to 6.1.3 .is it possible? if yes then how?
and i don't want to update on ios 7 or later
pleaase help meNo you can't. It is iOS 7 or not at all. You need to update to the lastest software or not at all, so the choice is yours. Update to the latest software or not at all. Stick with what you have.
Also stop trolling this forum with the same stupid question to which you have had the same answer time and again. -
I have an iPad (original). I cannot complete the update to iOS 5. It gets to the "backup" stage and then finds an error (-402653081). It asks if I want to continue, with a warning that "continuing will result in the loss of all contents on this iPad." What can I do?
Thanks Bob, I don't know why but it all of a sudden worked a few days later. It's a mystery but at least problem solved.
