How to update ITunes on my PC (Windows XP)?? Repeated attempts produce this messsage: "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." I have an older version of ITunes on the computer. Why can't I update it?

Repair your Apple software update.
Go to START > ALL PROGRAMS > Apple Software Update. If it offers you a newer version of Apple Software Update, do it but Deselect any other software offered at the same time. Once done, try another iTunes install
If you don't find ASU, go to Control Panel:
START > CONTROL PANEL/ > Add n Remove Programs, highlight ASU and click CHANGE then REPAIR

I have a brand new HP laptop windows 64bit that is having issues installing Itunes 10.6.3. Whenever attempting to install, I get the error message : "THERE IS A PROBLEM WITH THE WINDOWS INSTALLER PACKAGE. I have tried extracting the itunes package and installing the executables seperately, but everytime the error stil arises. I cannot repair the apple software update as it cannot install from the error mentioned above. Looking through the logs, it shows error : 1721, problem with windows installer package.Does anyone have any suggestions on what to try?

Apparently it's an itunes issue. I just tried to update and got the same issue. Called att to activate my iphone 4s and they say they can do the swap but apple is telling them itunes is down atm. So will have to wait

Follow Microsoft instructions below on how to take control of the Folder. You may apply this on your C:\Program Files(x86)\iTunes
You may take the ownership of the folder and then use the steps to grant permission to everyone–
Locate the file or folder on which you want to take ownership in windows explorer
Right click on file or folder and select “Properties” from Context Menu
Click on Security tab
Click on “Advance”
Now click on Owner tab in Advance Security Settings for User windows
Click on Edit Button and select user from given Change Owner to list if user or group is not in given list then, click on other users or groups. Enter name of user/group and click ok.
Now select User/group and click apply and ok. (Check “Replace owner on sub containers and objects” if you have files and folder within selected folder)
Click ok when Windows Security Prompt is displayed
Now Owner name must have changed.
Now click Ok to exist from Properties windows
Once you have taken the ownership of file or folder
Grant Permissions to everyone-
Go to C: and then click right click on folder and chooseproperties.
Then go to security tab and click Edit then clickAdd => Advanced.
If you click on advanced now click on Find Now and chooseeveryone and click Ok.
Then again click Ok and now click onAllow => Full control => Ok. -

I had itunes set up and working since i have had my iPhone and iPad. One day it asked to be updated, so i did. After it updated it stopped working because whenever i tried to open it it would say "this shortcut has either been deleted or moved would you like to delete this shortcut". Perhaps let's first try updating your Apple Software Update.
Launch Apple Software Update ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"). Does it launch and offer you a newer version of Apple Software Update? If so, choose to install just that update to Apple Software Update. (Deselect any other software offered at the same time.)
If the ASU update goes through okay, try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the errors this time? -

yes it should be covered using 1 year warranty. You cant get refund unless you have some customer protection program. So call applecare, I dont know the number in the UK.
