Concerning the last lines: I removed esound and audiofile because pacman reported that it isn't used by any package any more. Maybe also interesting: I still have kernel 2.6.39 installed since I had some issues with 3.0. Maybe something has been changed to work with 3.0 and is broken with 2.6 now?
I don't really know how to start troubleshooting.  speaker-test -c 2 doesn't produce any sound. Restarting alsa seems succesfull but doesn't make the sound appear, too. The loaded modules seem fine, too:
    $ lsmod |grep snd
    snd_mpu401 3824 0
    snd_cs4236 22423 0

Concerning the hardware: The motherboard has an integrated sound chip but it isn't used (or it shouldn't be), the speakers are connected to an Audigy 2ZS PCI card, whose module (snd_emu10k1 as reported by alsaconf) seems to be loaded. Btw, running alsaconf didn't solve the problem, too.
Thanks in advance for any advice,
    PhotonX
Solved: Problem disappeared by itself after another update (though no sound related packages were touched this time).

Okay, my sound is working again.  I fixed the problem by changing two settings in the pulse audio volume control.  The first was to turn off the RV710/730 Digital Stereo (HDMI) output device and the second was to change the Internal Audio profile to Analog Surround 5.1 Output.  I don't know if the settings will remain after a reboot or some other change, but they work for now.

  • X230 Type 2306 Lost Audio

I have an X230 Type 2306-CTO (Windows 7 64) that has recently lost audio.
No program has working audio, nor do working headphones produce sound.
I have installed and ran Lenovo system update version 5.03.0005.
I have also installed and ran the "Troubleshoot Audio Playback" troubleshooter for Windows 7.  It asks if I want to troubleshoot "Speaker/HP - Realtek High Definition Audio" or "Headphones - Bluetooth Hands-free Audio".  If I choose "Speaker/HP"  it "couldn't identify the problem", and if I choose "Headphones" it prompts me to "plug in the speaker, headset or headphone" even when headphones are already plugged in (it does not recognize plugged in headphones, and the troubleshooter stops there).
If I click on the speaker icon in my lower right hand tray, I can adjust the volume to 100%.  If I open the mixer, both Device and Applications are at 100% and not muted.  If I open Speaker/HP properties, device usage is listed as "Use this device (enable)".  If I choose the advanced tab and try to play a test tone, "Failed to play test tone" message is given.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Mithun,
When I went into my “Manage Audio Devices” (at work) I noticed three devices:
    Headphones (Bluetooth Hands-free Audio, Disconnected)
S271HL (Intel(R) Display Audio, Default Device)
Speaker/HP (Realtek High Definition Audio, Default Multimedia Device)
I disabled the S271HL device, which then made Speaker/HP my default device.  I then double clicked on that device, chose the enhancements tab, and made sure the “Disable all sound effects” option was chosen.
    This did not restore audio.
Then, under “services.msc” was listed “Windows Audio” and “Windows Audio Endpoint Builder”.  I right clicked both of them and chose “restart”.
    This did not restore audio.
I then went to my “Manage Audio Devices” (at home), and the S271HL device was no longer listed.
I retried resetting the two items under “services.msc” (at home) and audio was not restored.
I then went to my “Manage Audio Devices” (at work, next day) and the S271HL device was listed again, and still disabled.
I then used CCleaner to run the uninstaller for Intel(R) WiDi.  After restarting my computer, I then returned to “Manage Audio Devices” (at work) and the S271HL device was still listed, and still disabled. However, audio still did not work.
I would appreciate any additional suggestions.
    Kevin.

  • Troubleshooting Surround Mixer and Speaker Settin

    Hello,
First, I am using a clean install of Windows XP (no service pack 2).
A year ago I bought an Alienware computer with a vanilla Sound Blaster Audigy 2. Yesterday, I reformatted and reinstalled the drivers and software (Surround Mixer and Speaker Settings only) from the Alienware Master CD. The Creative Surround Mixer and Speaker Settings programs will NOT open. The "Creative Volume Control" icon appears on the system tray. Right-clicking it does nothing. Double-clicking does nothing. Opening the programs from their locations does nothing. I get an hourglass for half a second -- then, nothing.
I updated the Audigy 2 drivers from the Creative website. The programs still would not open. I updated both pieces of software. They still will not open.
At the moment, I have no surround sound -- I'm using 6. Speakers, and the control panel settings allow only 5. and 7.. So I'm in a rather poor position.
I did not have this problem before I reformatted.
    Why is this suddenly happening?
I would also like to comment that not including the software bundles with your downloadable drivers is a poor business practice. Every other sound/video card manufacturer includes fully functional driver/application resources on their website. What gives? You're punishing your customers for losing the installation CDs -- and those of us who never had one (Alienware includes everything on a rather sloppy backup CD) are defenseless.

The card is OEM. Alienware offers only the earliest drivers for the card by website (the exact same from the recovery CD) and none of the software found on the CD. My 'hardware analysis' tech support period is expired with Alienware, so they aren't much further help.
When the computer first shipped to me, the Audigy 2 card was installed as "Audigy 2" under control panel, all the software functioned, and updating through www.creative.com worked fine. After the reformat, installing the drivers from the recovery CD (in the Audigy 2 folder) caused the card to be listed simply as an "Audigy" under control panel. None of the software worked. Installing the latest drivers from www.creative.com caused the card to be properly listed as "Audigy 2", but of course, the software still does not work. Surround sound is working, I just have no way to manipulate *any* of its settings.
Does this mean I need to purchase an entirely new retail card in order to use surround sound again properly...

  • Speaker appears to be dying: anything to troubleshoot?

The speaker on my iPhone (that acts as the speakerphone and plays the ringer and other alert sounds) is apparently dying. The volume now was very low and the sound is distorted. I've tried it in different applications such as iTunes, Settings, and the alarm clock, and all sound identical.
I have tried doing a hard reset. I have not yet tried doing a full restore, however, it sounds more like a hardware than a software problem. I just thought I would ask here before returning to the Apple store for a replacement.
    Thanks for your help.

I would suggest going to the apple store doing a full restore may or may not fix it but it sounds more like a hardware problem so I doubt it..

  • IPhone 4 Mic & Speaker not Working during Call

    Hello All,
I have iphone 4 and it was locked on at&t and was running ios 5.0.1, now i have unlocked my iphone and now i am using ios 5.1.1. But i have a problem, when i call someone i cant hear anything "no dial tone sound and no sound during call" & speaker mode is also not working and nor the person cant hear my voice. I also tested on my another phone but same problem.....
So can you tell me is this a hardware problem or software problem ?? and yeah i can record voice memos and i can listen my memos with speaker on and off
    Waiting for reply....

Do the basic troubleshooting steps described in the User Guide:
    1.  Reset iPhone (no data loss): Press both home and power buttons for at least 10 seconds, releasing when the Apple logo appears.
    2.  Restore in iTunes using a backup
    3.  Restore in iTunes as new, without using a backup.
If restoring as new doesn't help, there is a hardware failure.

Speaker not working on phone calls

    Ok.  That's nice.
Do you have a question you would like to ask?  What troubleshooting have you done?

  • How do I use my Mac's mic and speaker when answering a phone call?

Whenever I receive a phone call on my iPhone and answer it on my Mac, the speaker and mic on the iPhone are used for the call rather than the Mac. On an older Mac I was using, when I answered a call from my iPhone, it used the Mac's speaker and mic for the call. Is there a setting somewhere to fix this on the new Mac? When I make calls from the Mac, it uses the speaker and mic, but it doesn't when I answer them. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS RE: iCLOUD MAIL SERVER DROPOUT

Here's what I learned throughout this and I will post a discussion in a separate thread for the rest of the folk out there.
MYTHS AND FACTS RE: iCLOUD MAIL SERVER DROPOUT- WHAT I'VE LEARNED
Hopefully this troubleshooting helps everyone that has had or having issues, for now and for the future...
Firstly, the Apple system status is a bit of a myth. Because it is a global community of people using iCloud, it does not always update in real time. The Apple techs check this when there is issues, as do the public, so odds are unless every single person is having issues around the globe, then it won't reflect an issue. http://www.apple.com/au/support/systemstatus/
Apple technicians work in territories. For example, I live in Australia so I had to deal with a tech supervisor who looks after Australasia and who is based in Singapore. They don't get a notification if a group of people in Canada are having problems, even if they are identical to mine, unless as above, the whole world is having issues.
CHECK THESE FORUMS as a first step measure to work out if the problem seems to be just you and your account, or a wider community. Particularly before you make any major change to your email accounts, passwords, computers or phones.
If you get an issue in the next week or so (and keep in mind for the future) Error Message: "MY NAME" returned the error "[AUTHENTICATIONFAILED] Authentication failed." Your username/password or security settings may be incorrect. Would you like to try re-entering your password?" and this happens multiple times when you know the password is correct, then odds are that the server is down and you are best to wait it out. Try checking your mail via iCloud to test. If you can send it through there, odds are that the glitch has nothing to do with your password or issues with your account and rather than make changes, try and wait it out.
If all of your folders in your email disappear, if they are IMAP folders, then log into iCloud mail in your web browser to check that they are still there. It just means that your mail client (Mac Mail, Outlook for Mac etc) can't access the IMAP folders via the server. Don't panic until they are gone from every device you use your email on.
Be wary of deleting ANYTHING from your computer unless you are backing it up first. For example, I had a tech guy on the first day of the server drop out, who gave me the wrong advice of deleting EVERYTHING from my keychain. This resulted in me having massive security issues for web browsers and thus, I couldn't log into my iCloud mail in my browser. Not only did I have to re-install my OS Maverick to fix it (which took 10 hours) but I could have muddled through this mess by continuing to work using web mail.
If everyone seems to be having a mail server problem based on online community discussions, then you are not alone and TELL your Apple tech this. Send copies of the links to the various conversations. Push them (nicely) to investigate internally what is going on and don't let them rely on the System support status. It also helps to put in a report to Apple down the track.
Make sure that you can get a copy of Apple tech guys email address. Thankfully, even though I was on the phone to them for in excess of 7 hours over the past two days, I could update my guy via email and also send him screen shots of things that did or didn't work using my iPhone. We would keep in contact and all I would have to do is send him an email and he would call me back straight away. No holding or dealing with any call centre issues, which is probably the only reason why I didn't lose my cool too much.
If you can get into your iCloud through your web browser, you have the options under the inbox and then the little wheel thing down the bottom (preferences) to put a vacation message, like an out of office. Put that on and explain you are having email issues and give another email address or your contact number. At least the people that you need to contact will know that things could get lost in cyberspace. I wish I had of known this earlier.
You can also forward emails emails to another email address under preferences. Also very handy.
Become friends with your tech guy rather than enemies. If you don't feel like your tech guy knows what he's talking about, politely request to speak to a supervisor. I would be having a nervous breakdown right now (small business owner, lost two days of billable hours so I am financially behind) if I didn't have a good relationship with the guy that has been helping me. We are a good team, with me updating him with the information, via these forums, to find a proper solution to the issue and to rectify the wrong information I was given by the previous Apple tech guy I spoke to.
Ask them to replicate your issue on their side of the fence to troubleshoot. For example, my tech guy Levi replicated my issue with websites by intentially removing the system certificate from his computer and he realised that was what the problem was, and thus he could quickly find out how to fix it.
Back up your stuff regularly. It might be annoying but it is peace of mind if know you are only going to lose a minimum of a week's worth of stuff.
Apple has an engineering team and tech guys raise 'tickets' to them with information on what has happened to their clients. I don't know much about this but I would assume it is having the engineering team investigate to stop this happening in future. They can only work with the feedback they get I suppose. I would also suggest doing the Apple Care survey so they also get feedback. We need to explain to them that we are asking for communication first and foremost - whilst it is inconvenient, if we all knew when and where they would be doing server upgrades (which the rumours indicate that this is what happened) then I don't feel everyone would be so frustrated.
Using your computer is like raising a child - you know when something is not right, even if you are not experienced at it yet. Sure, you may not know the lingo but trust your instincts and tell your tech guy. I have learned more in the past two days about computers and Mac's than ever before and I know when I can confidentially say that strange things were happening to my Mac and where Apple went wrong in guiding me. Don't always take a blanket or easy explanation if you don't think it is right; odds are it will result in making changes to your product that do more harm than good.
Keep a record of notes of how much time you have spent on the issue (including phone calls to Apple), what they have told you to do and at what time, changes to passwords, troubleshooting tips and the contact details (and reference numbers) of who you speak to. I'm not sure if Apple provides compensation for these issues or anything along these lines, but I certainly will be informing them so they can try and better their service to me in the future.
Anyway, I hope that helps everyone a bit - these are just things that I have learned and if anyone else has any tips please feel free to add them.

Tried port 465 but it wouldn't work.
Went to our help desk and here's the reply I got (paraphrased slightly cuz the person at the help desk was trying hard to be helpful and I don't want to get him/her in trouble):
I presented this question to the university team and then waited for a long time to get the following reply:
we do not allow relay from non-university IP addresses.
port 25 for smtp is a standard worldwide.
For the most part, that went right over my head and didn’t answer anything, but I hope it means something to you.
I called him to get more clarification, but all I really got out of it was that, if you don’t use exchange which is secure via port 443, then your other option is to use smtp.  And then he said something about how relay, iron ports, and authenticated accounts work together to make it secure.  I know it makes me sound a lot more inept than I am, but all that made little sense to me.  What I gather, is… that by selecting SSL when configuring your client, it makes it so that your login info and mail content is safe.  Sorry, I can’t provide a more cohesive and comprehensive explanation, but I think the bottom line is that they have combined a non-secure protocol with other stuff to make it secure.
So, I'm hoping that checking SSL and using port 25 somehow solves the problem to the satisfaction of our IT professionals at the University ...
Again, thanks for taking the time to educate the rest of us!

  • Problem with speaker, I only can make calls with headphones, or with handfree speacker from my Iphonhe5, I have no devices on Bluetooth of my phone, but when i use the player and use the volum it appear like if I have a device paired

    Hi,
    I have a problem,
I use to drive costumers cars, I don't have any devices to pair to my Iphone5.. but today I drive a car and my Iphone ask me if I want to pair the phone to the car, and I chose "Cancel" ..
    since that..
every time I want to play a song the phone acts like if it is connected to a car or some other device, every time I try to make a call, I only can use the hands free speaker or the headphones, because if I use the normal speaker to listen with the phone next to my face, the person that I am calling can listen me, but I dont..
so what I think it happens is like.. the phone connects to the car, the car is with the client, so, now, I can't have the the device "on" to my phone recognise it, so I would be able to delete it..
how do I solve this situation.. how can I delete a device that my Iphone is programed to use it, even when bluetooth is off....

  • One speaker on MacBook Pro not working for certain programs?

When I either receive or place a FaceTime call on my MacBook Pro, the left speaker cuts out audio and produces high static.  The right speaker is fine.  The receiving end can also hear the static feedback, but their two speakers work fine.  I have all my iOS devices setup to receive and place FaceTime calls (iPhone 5s, iPad, and MacBook Pro 15 inch late 2011).  If I place or receive the FaceTime calls on my iPhone or iPad, there is no problem.
I've tested the speakers, youtube, iTunes audio, streaming websites, netflix, etc... and all works fine on the MacBook Pro.  Just FaceTime.  I also went into system preferences and the speaker setup is correct (audio in and out - internal speakers).
I've also restarted, reinstalled Yosemite...still FaceTime left speaker problem.
I appreciate any troubleshooting advice and/or if others have experienced this problem.
    Thanks!

The Troubleshooting FaceTime for Mac OS X:FaceTime for Mac: Troubleshooting FaceTime - Apple Support does not offer much in the way of help for the problem you are having.
Have you tried going to System Preferences, Sound, Output and playing around with the Balance to see if that makes any difference?
You might also consider going to FaceTime, Preferences and turn FaceTime OFF and then back ON.
And to have the system checked, you could take it to an Apple store genius bar and have the techs see if there is something hardware-wise interfering with FaceTime.

  • Puzzler - Is there a way to detect when an external headphone or speaker is plugged in?

I have a puzzler, and my initial question is simply, is there a way to see via Windows if/when an external headphone or microphone is plugged in, or is that all an electrical circuit independent of the OS?
Background: (not necessarily the question I'm asking, but providing anyway):
The background is this:  Dozens, Hundreds, I think Thousands of owners of Toshiba Satellite owners with Conexant sound devices (including myself) the world over have this problem where the sound stops working about 1 to 2 minutes into playing non-stop
sounds/music/videos.  In spite of all the experts telling these poor people to run a system restore and wipe out the past years of files and everything on their computer, the problem prevails no matter what.  Some have even installed Linux, and the
problem persists. To me, it seems that the problem doesn't occur if the only sounds are the occasional bing or bong from a system warning, it seems to fail after 1 to 2 minutes of continuous play (but this particular observation is mine only, nobody else has
taken the time to point that out).
A few have claimed success via blowing the jacks out with compressed air, but that's not repeatable universally.  Most people end up keeping external speakers plugged in permanently. In other words, it seems a lot like a hardware problem; However,
{edit 3}, my addition of "Edit 2" below makes it seem less like hardware.
One interesting thing:  Headphones/speakers work permanently, there's no problem.  More curiously, when the sound goes out, plugging any form of headphone/microphone jack into
    EITHER the headphone
OR the microphone jack turns the sound back on too.  This includes male-to-male extension cable with nothing installed.  If nothing is on the other end, the sound will go out
again shortly, but jiggling or removing the male to male turns it back on.
EDIT 2: When the sound goes out, another way to get it back: From system tray, right click the speaker item and choose SOUNDS.  The virtual VU meter shows that audio is playing (in tandem with the song, etc.), and is still showing audio
playing.  The tabs available are Playback, Recording, Sounds, and Communications.  When the sound does stop (assuming I was watching Playback), I click the Recording tab (just the tab header), and sound starts again.
P.S. What's the difference between "High Definition Audio Controller" under System Devices, and "Conexant SmartAudio HD" under "Sound, Video, and Game Controllers", in Device Manager?  The "conexant smartaudio hd"
points to the latest Conexant driver, the "High Definition Audio Controller" points to a default windows driver.  Just curious
I've Binged this extensively:  Toshiba doesn't acknowledge the problem and nobody has fully solved the issue. I'm just curiously trying a few things myself, and I'm not sure if there's a way for the system to tell me an external mic/speaker has been
    plugged in.
So to recap:  My main question, can I detect when the computer thinks a headphone or microphone is plugged in? (My theory, if I can prove that the computer THINKS something is plugged in, it's a start).
    Only secondarily, if anyone's interested, feel free to suggest ideas (here's what dozens of other posts have disproven: System restore; windows reinstall; outdated sound driver; outdated video driver; remove and re-detect sound and device via device manager;
malware; BIOS upgrade; Flash and/or the Flash/Firefox/Hardware Acceleration issue (problem happens with MP3, Flash, WMA, HTML5, Games, everything).
    Thanks in advance!
EDIT: One person (theirs was under warranty, mine's not) ended up getting a new motherboard & speaker via Toshiba warranty, diagnosis ""machine intermittent no sound due to PCB faulty".  I'm still interested in troubleshooting,
    though.  Link:

    Hi,
If there are any headphone or speaker plugged in and detected, it will show in audio device manager console.
Type mmsys.cpl in Run, it will open Sound console.
Have you tried Hardware and Sound troubleshooter?

  • I can listen to music with my headphone on an iPhone 4s but unable to hear it on the onboard speaker. This happens recently. What's wrong with my iphone 4s?

I can listen to music on my headphone, but not on the speaker. Please help.

Basic troubleshooting steps clearly outlined in the User Guide are restart, reset, restore from backup and restore as new device.
If you have been through ALL these recommended steps and your problem persists, there's really nothing more you can do.  You'll need to bring your phone into Apple for service.
