    I am having the same problem.  There are 3 different apps that I have tried to make an "in app" purchase on.  One of the apps tells me "Cannot connect to itunes".  We know that this is not true as I have connected to it immediately before and after trying to make this purchase.  The other 2 purchase that I have tried to make just don't do anything when click the "Buy now" icon.
    I do not use restrictions.  I have also tried the solutions above.  This problem started on my last phone, the original iphone4 with ios4 and has persisted after an upgrade to the 4S with ios5.
    I can't believe that we are the only 2 people with this problem.

    Additonally, at this point I really want to talk to someone who cares about how a customer like I might feel in such a situation and when I call corporate would like to talk to someone who is interested in hearing my input as it really sucks to think I really don't feel like going to the store anymore and would rather just buy stuff on amazon or newegg these days instead;/  When I know how much i used to enjoy going into the store and getting friendly with kind staff who worked with me to get the best deal on the items I got--perhaps this was because it was at a more desperate time when Best Buys fate as a company was more precarious prior to price matching taking origin.  Also, on an aside, would like to add that obviously there is always the one or two people who go out of their way to make sure you have an excellent expeirenece so I am not trying to make any sweeping generalizations here.  In fact, I find the forum contributors to be among the most kind and helpful, but that might be because they don't have to deal with the now seemingly dreaded "pricematch" epidemic;D

    Try this...
    Triple click anywhere in the line below to select it and press Ctrl+C to copy it.
    cmd /k netsh winsock reset
    Press the WinLogoKey+R to open the run dialog, then Ctrl+V to paste, then press enter/return.
    You should get something similar to this:
    Reboot the computer and the problem should be resolved.
    If it doesn't work then perhaps a full tear down and rebuild of iTunes will fix things. See Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates for details.

    You might try to confirm that your messages are actually sending. I have the same problem, but my messages appear to be sending but are not actually being received.

    I redeemed the itunes voucher on the same Apple ID I want to buy the gems with?

    You will only be able to buy items in an app if you are signed into and use the same account that you originally bought that app with - is that the account that you are signed into ?

    What happens when you try to buy them, does the 'buy' button not work, do you get any error messages ... ?

    This is incorrect. "There is a billing problem with a previous purchase. Please update you payment method. " means you have made a purchase and iTunes/Apple hasn't received the finds for it yet. hence the "There is a billing problem with a previous purchase. Please update you payment method. ". This means you would need to either use an iTunes gift card to pay it off or another debit or credit card that is currently on the account.

    Installed 2.01 firmware update and I can no longer connect to the apps store or to itunes store. this is a legit phone, not unlocked, I bought it 3 days ago at apple 5th ave and I'm set to Wifi signal not 3G. Anybody else having this problem???

    I had this problem too. On further investigation I found that my phone would not connect to the internet via wifi. It showed that I was connected, but I couldn't update mail, weather, surf safari or access iTunes. I spent some time on the phone with Apple support and in the end the trick that worked was a reset of my router. Try powering it off for about 30 seconds and then plug it back in. That made everything work again on my phone. Apple support suggested also updating my router firmware.

    I am able to growse in the iTunes store to my heart's content. I find a movie I want to rent. I watch the preview. I click Rent, follow the instructions, confirm payment method, and... get a "cannot connect to iTunes store" error.
    I try again. This time I observe that there's a notification under Downloads. I click there just for the heck of it, and... the movie starts to download.
    Since I'm roughly 45 minutes away from the download being complete, I wonder whether I'll have any more luck renting the moving once it's completed downloading. or...
    was the "cannot connect" error a false negative, and in fact has the transaction gone through (I don't see an invoice from iTunes store, but then they usually take a day or so to show up anyway)?

    I wouldn't sit and worry about it...Just keep checking, and if you see that something did go wrong, the only thing that would really happen is you would have been charged twice.  However, this is why Apple doesn't charge right away, I have had similar situations and never been over charged.  But like the above post mentioned, if you are downloading the movie, the charge already went through....
