It sounds like you may have encountered Activation Lock. Is this a used phone that you purchased? When you tried to update it and activate it, it is looking for the Apple ID and password of the previous owner? You need to contact the place where you purchased it and have them try to contact the previous owner. If that cannot be done, then return the device for a refund, it will be useless to you. You will not be able to activate it without that information. No one here on the forum, nor Apple can assist you with this.

HT5625 Here's my story: I "signed out" of my account on my IPAD. Then I DID NOT hit "create a new ID" - I simply filled in the top information with new email and password (the ipads new owner) - this got all set up but now when it wants to update anything

I gave my second IPAD to a friend.
I also recently changed the email associated with my own account
because I will be moving and will be unable to use that address much longer...
now I am not yet sure I can update my own apps (will it ask for old email and password?)
on the given IPAD - with the new Apple ID and password it is asking for
my present but soon to be disabled email with password - but it does not
recognize the password (i dont think it will recognize it when i upgrade as well!)
QUESTION
How do I straighten this mess out to be able to update all future apps on two
iphones and two ipads each having one different their separate Apple IDs?
and how can I get it to recognize the password that was at one time associated
with that email address

Apps are forever tied to the Apple ID under which they were purchased. If your friend wants to be able to manage apps on their device using their own Apple ID, they will need to delete all the apps purchased using your Apple ID and buy their own.
Hopefully, you just updated your own Apple ID with the new email and didn't make the mistake of creating a new Apple ID. If you created a new ID, stop using it now, don't buy anything using it and go back and update the ID under which you purchased your apps.

Then there's nothing you can do. Only the previous owner can help you. They must either provide the ID and password, or erase the phone and remove it from their account as explained in the article you were reading. There's no way around this.

You just made a very expensive mistake, especially if you can't return the phone.

the icloud one will require u to have the password of the old apple id to be able to sign out

After reviewing your post, I believe your device is under Activaltion Lock. The following article will provide you with more information about the feature:
iCloud: Activation Lock
With iOS 7 or later, Find My iPhone includes a feature called Activation Lock, which is turned on automatically when you set up Find My iPhone. Activation Lock makes it harder for anyone to use or sell your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if it’s ever lost or stolen.
With Activation Lock, your Apple ID and password are required before anyone can:
Turn off Find My iPhone on your device
Sign out of iCloud on your device
Erase and reactivate your device
Important: Make sure to remember your Apple ID and password, and that your password is unique and secure—someone else shouldn’t be able to guess it. For more information, see the Apple Support article Security and your Apple ID.
If you want to give away or sell your device, be sure to erase your content and settings (in Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings). When you erase your content, Find My iPhone and Activation Lock are also turned off.

Actually, it does bring problem to couples, married or otherwise, when they spilt up. This forum is full of horror stories of splits and then one of the couples "locks" the other out of the Apple ID and in some cases rendering the phones useless (because of activation lock). IF you forget your email and password and you are stuck in the activation process, it usually gives you a clue on what is your email like w********[email protected] If you really own the phone, you already have a clue on what is that email add. Then go to appleid.apple.com, click on manage my device, enter what you think is your email addy (no harm in trying that it wont lock) then click on i forget password. This will give you an option to either sent the password to an alternate email. If you have several, then sad to say you have to open it one by one and check including your spam mails. Another option is to answer some security questions you made while creating an apple id. Your last option is to call apple support. If you know the email add and you can prove ownership, they can reset the password for you

It sounds like a phishing email. You can't "cancel" purchases. You've now given them your AppleID and password, so you should immediately change your password to something new and very secure.
Also watch out for suspicicious activity on your account.

Try logging out of your account on the phone by tapping on your id in Settings > iTunes & App Store and then log back in with the updated id so as to 'refresh' the acccount on it
