An Apple ID is free and you will be charged nothing for creating it.
To create an Apple ID without a credit card read Creating an iTunes Store, App Store, iBookstore, and Mac App Store account without a credit card

To summarize, you must first download a free app from the App Store. When you are asked to sign in with your Apple ID, select "Create new account". Accept the terms and conditions checkbox, then click Continue. After you enter all the requested personal data, click Continue.
When you are asked to select a payment method, select "None".
That's all there is to it.

To expound just a little bit more on what Ralph is saying ...if you do not set up your Apple ID in a very specific way from the start, Yoy have to enter credit card details even if you are downloading free apps. Your account details are now incompletely with the credit card, even though you don't want to use a credit card.
This explains exactly how you have to set up an Apple ID if you do not want to use a credit card. If you did not set up the account this way, you are now forced to enter the credit card - if you want to use this ID.

Did you add or change your credit card details when downloading the app ? If so then you've probably received a temporary store holding charge, which should disappear within a few days : holding charges. Or have you made any in-app purchases within the app (what app is it) ? If you log into your account on your computer's iTunes (Store > View My Account), what shows under your purchase history ?

When I activate genius I am always led to a page where my credit card information, including the three digit security code are asked.
If a transaction is attempted, please tell me: which one, of what amount?
If not, because Genius is free, why are you needing my security code (the three digit under my card)?

I just attempted to create a new account when downloading a free application, and the problem remain the same. There is no way to select no credit card and a payment mode is mantadory.
The best way would be to add the choice:
"No Payment mode yet"
on that web page, to allow all users to select their payment mode only at buying time.
This would be far more secure for all the reasons I've said:
APPLE MAY BE HACKED LIKE SONY AND SHALL NOT STORE CREDIT CARDS INFORMATION.
ESPECIALLY NOT THE SECURE CODE!!!!!

Apple forces users to find messages among the Internet to understand how they could register without a credit card,

If you have a payment source associated with your Apple ID, it needs to be a vaild form of payment. To troubleshoot issues with your payment type being declined, please follow the steps below.
In most cases, this issue is caused by a formatting error in the billing address that you have provided. You can correct the issue by verifying that the information you have provided is correct, or by changing the format of your address to match the format that your credit card company has on file.
You can verify and/or modify your billing address by following these instructions:
Open iTunes. If you are signed in to iTunes, skip to step 4.

You don't HAVE to, but it sure does make life easier if you do. You might want to buy a song. You might want to buy an App. You might want to make an In-App purchase. I've had my CC tied to my iTunes account now for years, and it's completely secure.

Just got a Mac Pro, never used it, setting up for an "Apple ID" I don't play with credit cards ATM so I got a prepay card from Apple and attempted to leave the credit card section blank and just add the "gift card" and other info. Why can't I setup my Apple ID without giving credit card info???? As I have said I just got this Mac, trying to update it it will ask to sign in to Apple ID then send me to fill out my info but will not let me do anything until I give out a credit card....won't let me use the prepaid App card unless I have a credit card to back it up....
Just want to have this book update and the updates don't cost anything. Inconvenient! I thought if at least I put in a gift card from apple it would accept it and allow me to update without adding credit cards. Their has to be away around this credit card issue

I am new to cloud and find azure good to work with clouds. But I was trying to create trial an account there and it is asking for credit card. Please tell me if this is trial then why it is necessary to give the card details? Moreover, being a trial version,

You won't be charged for a free book.
If you do get an entry on your credit card it is most likely just going to be a holding charge that is made to check that your credit card is valid and active, and also possibly that it is registered to an address in the country whose iTunes store you are using. I would not enter my credit card information unless it is to purchase an item! As Samcolee ponted out they could have a very legitimate reason for requesting this information, but I am very paranoid when it comes to things like this and I would just not provide them with this information for something that they advertise as free. When you decide to purchase something then bby all means provide this information in order to complete a transaction but other than that, no way.
