HTML Help window placement problem

Hi -
We just upgraded to R7 from X5. It seems that now, for our
newly generated Help, the HTML Help viewer will not right-align.
Even if I specify the maximum width in the Window Properties
dialog, when generated, the window only extends about 4/5 of the
available screen width and is LEFT aligned.
Our screens are 1024 x 768 and RoboHelp seems to understand
this because if I max out the window size in the Window Properties
dialog, the height shown = 767 and width = 1019.
Is anyone else experiencing this placement problem?
TIA

Hi, Jack,
> ... the HTML Help window properties dialog only accepts
hard coordinates (i.e. pixels).
> ...
> Unless someone knows differently, for HTML Help,
apparently you can't get the HTML
> Help viewer to appear right-aligned for all
screen/display configurations
Yes, this is correct on both counts. Because of limitations
in Microsoft's design of HTML Help, you cannot specify the
dimensions of the help window in anything other than pixels, and
you can only set the initial position of the window relative to the
left and top edges of the screen.
On the other hand, if you are calling the help file
programmatically from an application, there may be some scope for
controlling the position of the help window by using standard
Windows functions. This article provides a small amount of extra
information:

  • Cannot Compile CHM -- Message says to close all HTML Help windows

Running TCS 1.3 with latest patches.
Single source project - output to HTML Help (.chm).
When I try to compile, I receive the following message:
"Cannot create compiled file. It may be open in another window. Please close all HTML Help windows and try again."
I don't have any HTML Help windows open. Shutting down RH and restarting does not resolve the problem. I have to shut down the computer, which is a serious hassle, before I can compile again. I do work from a network directory, which may be causing it, but I'd like to know if there is a process I can kill from the Windows Task Manager that would allow me to compile without having to restart my computer. I don't see any process that identifies itself as something I can kill to resolve this issue.
    Anyone?

    Hi there
That message normally indicates you have launched the .CHM file that you are trying to create. The first step of the process is to destroy the existing .CHM in preparation for building the new one. Just as you would need to destroy a house on a lot where you wish to build a new one.
If your .CHM is on a network drive, another user may have it open. (yet another good reason for working locally)
If your .CHM is on your local drive, RoboHelp believes you have it open. If you press Alt+Tab, you may see a blue up arrow. That will indicate the running CHM file.

  • Searching for a term using the Search tab in HTML Help doesn't find all relevant topics.

I'm using the Search tab in the HTML Help window to search for a few words.  But those words are not being located within the topics.  For example, one of the words for which I am searching is Australian.  I can find the topic that contains that word using the Contents tab.  But the Search tab doesn't find it.  I have even tried copying the word from that topic into the Search box but it is not found.
Is there a known bug in HTML Help search capabilities?

Is this a stand alone CHM file or is it merged? If it is merged, does the word appear in the search in the CHM containing the topic is searched? I assume you've checked that your Stop List doesn't contain the word being searched?

  • Pressing F1 does not expand the TOC in MS HTML Help

I'm using version 6 of RoboHelp.
When my users click F1 in my software application, I want the
TOC to expand on the left-hand side of the Microsoft HTML Help
window so they can see the page that is displayed to them. I've
checked the "Always Show Selection" box in the HTML Help - Advanced
Settings - TOC Styles window. However, when I compile, it doesn't
    work.

I've been doing some experimenting with the options in that
Windows Properties dialog box found under Edit-Windows.
I created a brand new test project, which contains only one
topic. I added that one topic to the TOC. Then, I performed 2 tests
    as follows:
Test 1: I selected Windows from the Edit menu to open the
Windows Properties dialog box. I looked at the Search checkbox to
make sure it was checked on. I generated my primary layout. In the
Microsoft HTML Help window, there was, indeed, a Search tab.
Test 2: I re-opened the Windows Properties dialog box and
removed the checkmark from the Search box. I generated my primary
layout again. However, the Search tab still appeared in the
Microsoft HTML Help window, even though I unchecked the box.
Test 3: I changed the content of one page of my project.
Then, I re-generated my primary layout again. This time, the Search
tab disappeared from the Microsoft HTML Help window.
In summary, it appears that the options in the Windows
Properties dialog box do not affect the primary layout unless some
content in the project is changed.

  • Microsoft HTML Help Options

Where do I define the "home" page that is supposed to appear
when the user clicks the Options button at the top of the Microsoft
HTML Help window, and then selects Home?

This should be set in your Window settings dialog. In my old
version, you need to click on the "Advanced" button to get there.
Without knowing your RH version, I can't tell you exactly how to
get there. It is one of the parameters (the fifth one) of the
    Window definition in your .hhp.

  • Window Properties (HTML Help) - Placement Issues

I am compiling my online help in Robohelp 8 and have an issue with the window placement of the Help menu output.  I have a dual monitor setup so the Help window appears on the primary monitor.  Is there a setting or configuration that instructs the Help menu to open up as a child to the parent application that's calling the Help?

    Janet:
Make sure there are no carriage returns lurking inside the
JavaScript (depending on how the content was wrapped when you
selected it to Copy/Paste). One way to be sure is to copy it to
Notepad and turn off the Wrap feature; any line breaks will be
    obvious.

  • Urgent - HTML help merged projects - displaying in the same window

    Hi All,
Following some recent windows updates I'm experiencing all sorts of problems. My most urgent problems is as follows:
First off this is all in RH8 and yes I have upgraded to 8.0.2 and project is set to re-build cpd each time.
So I have a merges project as follows:
    Parent project
         child project 1
         chils project 2 etc
when I compile an html help project with TOC, and single source window settings on default if I click on a child project it is diaplyued in a separate window. If I then select a different project in the parent project TOC this is also displayed in a different window but the window still has the caption of the previously opened file.
What I need as  the end result is for my HTML help project output to al display in the same window whether I click on a parent project item, or a child project item.
Please can somebody advise mne how to do this as I am VERY close to a deadline and as usual it seems RH8 has let me down again.....
    Thanks

    Hi there
Methinks Colum needs more coffee, because the options he cited have nothing to do with other windows. They have to do with whether the displayed topic synchronizes with the TOC and whether the TOC entry is highlighted.
I'm thinking it has to do with creating a "Global" window. You change the names of the windows so they include Global.

  • Main window size for HTML Help

    Hello again
I have looked at the archives and despite thinking I had seen
this particular issue covered before, I could not find anything. I
generate a HTML Help File with RoboHelp for Word x5.0.1 and would
like to set the default window size as at the moment my Help File
opens in a rather small window. Also if a user maximises the
window, closes the Help File and re-opens it, it still opens in the
small windows, i.e. the size settings were not save upon closing
    the file.
Can anybody help? I reckon there must be some place (I
noticed the existence of the Edit > Windows menu but it only
seems to apply to WinHelp) I can set this up.
    Thank you.
    Regards,

In Project Manager, double click Windows and then the window
you use. There should be fields for setting the size. If not, check
that HTML is your primary output and then create a new window, then
    you should see the fields.

  • No Windows HTML Help shown under Win7?!

    Hello there,
I work with RoboHelp 8 and Win7. I´ve tried to generate html help, the CHM is shown but there´s no window popping up and showing the result. How can that be? Is there a serious compatibility problem with windows7 and robo8?
    thx so far

    Hi there
You were compiling a CHM file, no?
Sorry, but my guess is that there is little RoboHelp or Adobe could do to influence that behavior, because what it does is to hand things off to the Microsoft HTML Help Compiler.
As an aside, it's been known for a while that long path names may cause issues. Best practice is to create a folder near the root. I frequently recommend one named Projects. As in C:\Projects. Then for each project you create, it becomes a sub folder inside that.
In addition to what I listed above, when you name things (Projects, Files, Folders) you should avoid any special characters. Stick to the basics. a-z, A-Z and 0-9.

  • Customize window size  for HTML Help?

My .CHM file opens up in a ridiculously tiny window, and I
can't seem to change that from within Robohelp. I saw some
information on Rick Steve's site about customizing window sizes for
Webhelp and Flashhelp. I'm hoping there's a similar technique
    available for HTML help.
    Thanks!

In Project Manager, double click Windows and then the window
you use. There should be fields for setting the size. If not, check
that HTML is your primary output and then create a new window, then
    you should see the fields.

  • Hi, can anyone help with the problem I am having with pro book 4440s? I can't boot into windows 7.

Hi, can anyone help with the problem I am having with pro book 4440s?  I can't boot into windows 7, nor can I enter the bios cause i fogot the password. the error I am getting says "windows failed to start. a recenr hardware or software change might be the cause.   it then gives me options to boot from a disc but I can't do that cause I am unable to get into the bios to change it to boot from a disc.
The error message goes on :
    File: \Boot\BCD
    Status: oxcoooooof
info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration.
the only two options on the screen are enter=continue and ECS=exit
I just can't get pass this screen.
    Please help.
    Thanks

    Hi,
If you don't already have one, use another PC to create a Windows 7 Rescue CD.  Download the relevant ISO from the links below.
    Windows 7 32bit
    Windows 7 64bit
You should use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO to a CD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.  Once created, or if you already have this, tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Insert the Rescue CD.  Select Boot options ( usually f9 ), use the arrow keys to select the CD/DVD drive and hit enter.  You may also get a prompt to 'Press any key to continue' - do this if asked.
When loaded, select Repair Your Computer and choose the Command Prompt.  When this loads, enter the following commands and hit enter after each one - include spaces as shown.
    Bootrec.exe
    bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
    c:
    cd boot
    attrib bcd -s -h -r
    ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
    bootrec /RebuildBcd
    bootrec /fixmbr
    bootrec /fixboot
Remove the Rescue CD and try rebooting the notebook.

  • Calling Windows HTML Help

    Hello
can any one tell me how to call Windows HTML Help (.chm)?
It is possible to call .hlp file using -
    v_help:=Winhelp.Winhelp('C:\HELP_SAMPLE.HLP',
    'HELP_CONTENTS','ORA_FFI');
But same package fails to invoke HTML Help (.chm file) , is there any other pachage available to call HTML Help ?
    thanks for any replay
    Prakash K.B.

    Hi Prakash,
you must install the MS HtmlHelp (hh*.* - files) on the clients and then you can call the CHM-Files from Forms-client:
    host('C:\WINNT\system32\hh.exe C:\help.chm');
    It works fine.

  • Problem with HTML Help import lib

I am doing a project and using HTML help as the help system. I have done
this with other projects on the same PC (in a different directory) just
fine. When I try build my specific new project I get
    3 link errors
undefined symbol __imp__RegCloseKey@4 referenced in c:\supervisor
    console\htmlhelp.lib
undefined symbol __imp__RegQueryValueExA@4 referenced in c:\supervisor
    console\htmlhelp.lib
    plus one more
Could the problem be the space in the directory name "\supervisor console"?
I am at a loss to what is missing from this new project. I am including the
same htmlhelp.lib as in the other project.

    We are using designer/headstart 6i.
Within Designer we have build a Module component with
    several Sub components.
The Headstart HTML Help Generator doesn't seem to
allocate a context help ID prefix/suffix, for
(unbound-) items that are placed on the
    sub-component.
    Hello Mark,
I modified the generator so that it also generates help for items on subcomponents. Send me an email and I will send you the modified sources.
    Regards, Rob

  • Complied chm file displays 'HTML help' on the title bar instead of the window name

Complied chm file displays 'HTML help' on the title bar instead of the window name.
    I tried several ways like:
    1. Changed File>Project settings name and also set the language to English (US).
    2. Checked the Title name in .hhp file
    3. Used the window while compling.
    4. Robohelp language settings.
    5. Also uninstalled and reinstalled robophelp.
    But nothing helped
The title name is displayed correctly if the same project is compiled on another machine.

When the code in the HHP and the regional settings on a PC match, the correct title is displayed. Or other way around is also true the help title is displayed in the language specified in the help project IF (and only if) the regional settings of the PC match that language. Otherwise, "HTML Help" is displayed.
    Hope this help.
    Thanks and Regards,

  • Want HTML Help Link to Open in New Window

Using TCS V1.3 with the latest patches.
Single source project from FM to RH -- output to HTML Help.
I'd like certain links in the HTML Help to open into a separate window. Is there a way to set this up from FM? Apparently, WebWorks has a setting to accomplish this task - I don't see a similar setting in RH.

    Hi there
I don't believe either of these is may be possible with a simple tweak you perform in the Frame source. Then again, the extent of my Frame knowledge is totally laid out with this:
    Everything I know about Frame.
Click Start > Programs > Framemaker.
    The Framemaker application may open.
Something happens after that, but I can't be certain.
