HTML Newsletters

Hi,
I was just thinking about the best way to go about
redesigning an HTML newsletter that a client of mine has been
sending out via email while also hosting an archived version of all
past newsletters on the main web site. The site I'm redesigning
right now is currently using php to include header and footer
content and one CSS file throughout the entire site for easy
updating, but from what I understand, I'm going to need to create
each newsletter as a separate HTML document with tables (instead of
divs) and CSS included right in the <head>.
My question is: What might be a good way to go about creating
a series of HTML Newsletters (without using mailchimp) that would
be easiest to manage content and update styles? Also, can an
emailed HTML Newsletter have a link to an external style sheet, or
is it better to include the CSS right in the head of each document?
I'm trying to come up with a way to NOT have to create two
separate versions of each newsletter (one for the web site and one
for emailing) but I'm just not sure there's any way around that.
Anybody out there have any expert advice?
Thanks,
~Greg

Why no mailchimp?

You mean for the archives? For the email, you wouldn't use
CSS in the
head - it would be in the body (even inline). But your use of
CSS in the
email should be minimal, if you are wanting the broadest
email client
support.

No.

It would have to be in the body of the page, not the head.

  • Cant view html newsletters in mail

I can seem to be able to view html newsletters in Mail. It strips all the images and formatting only shows links and text. I usually have to click the link found in the text where you can view it online to see the proper formatted document.
Funny thing is that i used to be able to view them and it seems that all of a sudden i cant view them any more. I havent changed any settings (i dont remember if mail has updated recently but i usually do the updates as soon as i am prompted). The only thing i can see in Mail Preferences that may relate to this is under Viewing where is says "Display remote images in HTML messages" which is already checked.
I am on Leopard with Mail 3.2
    Any clues anyone?

I experience the same problem. Mail.app indicates that it can not display html and refers to a url. Strange enough, this also happens with messages sent by Apple.
I am using Leopard with Mail 3.3

  • Designing HTML Newsletters

I'm looking for an app that will allow me to easily create HTML newsletters. I know I can do it in Dreamweaver, but I'm looking for something quick and easy. Ideally, it would be along the lines of PrintShop and include templates and the ability to import my own graphics and such. Anyone know of such a beast?

    Hi Jeppe,
This is what I do to send HTML newletters:
    1) Create the page using Dreamweaver;
    2) Open the HTML file using Safari;
    3) Under "File", I click on "Mail Contents Of This Page", which takes me to a new message in Mail;
    4) I choose the addresses and whatever text I need, then send.
Here's the catch: when designing the page (whether you use Dreamweaver or some other software), make sure you use absolute URL's in your code and upload your images, CSS, etc., to your server for your website. This way, the person receiving your newsletter has access to the files needed to correctly compile the HTML code. Hope this helps.

  • Anchor links in HTML newsletters not working in iOS8 and above

I used to receive daily HTML email newsletters with links anchor down to detailed content. The links were working fine in all the previous versions. After upgrading to iOS 8, the internal hyperlinks (anchor links - both named as well as id) are not working. It takes me to nowhere and shows an error message id. This seems to be very specific with iOS 8 and there is no HTML code support to overcome this issue.
Can Apple fix this issue at the earliest as it is very difficult to scroll up and down every time to read the contents of the email newletters?

  • Html newsletters displayed in Email

This seems like an easy topic but it is not to be found in
these forums. I contantly get emails that display an html page when
opened. They are linked to the sender's site to get the images. I'm
on a Mac, how do I make my email newsletter display in emails my
clients get? I have the newsletter up on a server now ready to
download but how do I get the viewers email program to download and
display it automatically? I'd rather they don't have to click on a
    link to see it.

    1. Upload all of your cotent to the site.
    2. navigate to that page.
    3. click ctrl +A to select the entire page.
    4. now click ctrl + c to copy the page.
    5. now paste it into your email and your done.
Note: Make sure your images have the full url reference to
them. You can do this quickly with the find/replace function.
So your images should go from:
    /images/imagename.jpg
    to
    http://www.yoursitename.com/images/imagename.jpg

  • Why does my custom HTML newsletters absolute image urls get changed into imap: urls

I made a custom newsletter email in which all my images are absolute URLS. I use Thunderbird to send it out through my imapped google email account. Once I send it the URLs get changed and for some reason brings my tracking URL into the image URL as well from the bottom of the page.

  • HTML emails show up as code only, no formatting

    Hi All,
I am trying to learn how to send out HTML Newsletters for my clients. I have no trouble creating the design and layout (in GoLive), but when I cut and paste the code into Mail, it just shows up as code. I have uploaded my graphics to a server and have resolved my URLs to that server, so that's not the issue. It just seems to be something here. I've also tried it in Netscape Mail and Entourage, no good. I receive HTML email form others just fine. Ideas?
    Thanks for your help,
    MarkE

You can't cut and paste HTML code in the body of a message since the Mail.app does not include an HTML composer.
Save your GoLive document and open the document with Safari.
At the menu bar, go to File and select Mail Contents of This Page.
The rendered GoLive document in Safari will be copied to a new Mail.app message.

  • How to HTML a Mobile Me page, via email and send as a newsletter?

What i would like to do - send HTML newsletters (as a published page on my mobile me site) and let those people view on email. However, my site being private, they cannot actually view the site or the rest of the pages.
THEREFORE - Can one PW protect the mobile me site first (yes i know it can be done) and then choose one of the pages to send out as a newsletter to select people in HTML? I do not know if this is possible and if so, how. Meaning, the page is viewed upon opening the email, as a normal HTML file without becoming an attachment? Also, since the site is PW protected, the recipient cannot actually follow the page back to the site.
Any experts seeing this, many thanks in advance if you can find a way to do so, and advise me.

The page size options are limited, but are in the crop tool. If there are no tags or other markup, you can also print to a new PDF and adjust the size in the printer interface -- sometimes the simplest method, but not normally recommended. The rotation can be done in the document menu and then saved. The rotation that is typically on the toolbar are only for the current view and does not save with the PDF. Many of these you can use a batch process to resolve (in AA8 that is under the Advanced>Document Processing). The better method is to setup your Adobe PDF printer to create the correct page size and orientation in the future. You can setup to typically expand to fit, select a paper size, and have the settings set to auto-rotate. The later is based on the text that is found on the page. The margin elimination is also part of the crop tool. Hopefully this at least gives you some things to look at. Unfortunately, the tools get moved around with every version, so you may have to search for the tools.

  • Html email rendering as attachment

I'm a developer sending out an html email. Web clients like Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail render the email inline as expected, as do desktop email clients. But for one recipient, Sun Java System Messenger Express renders the html as an attachment. There is not boundary etc. like you would use for multipart mail or attachments, so what could be triggering this? The recipient can receive other similar html newsletters just fine. The html is relatively simple tables with images and some formatted text. The mail is being sent via php's mail function (sendmail).
    Thanks,

I should also point out that Messenger Express is a deprecated client (i.e. Sun stopped providing fixes for this client a long time ago) and was replaced by UWC/Communications Express which has in turn been replaced by Convergence.

  • MSOutlook HTML newsletter issues - large gaps between large images and small gaps...

    Please can you help me!
Searched the web & found plently of advice but still getting formatting display issue when viewing HTML newsletter in MS Outlook.
Fully aware on the basics regarding the multiple issues when creating HTML newsletters but this is driving me crazy.
Apparently there is a image height limit within Outlook (can't find out what this is) so I have sliced my larger images into 5/6 parts which solves the display issue in Outlook.
But the gaps between the slices are now being displayed as small blank spaces within Hotmail.
I did use <br> between each slice as without caused the fixed 600px wide containing table to expand due to the slices stacking hoz.
Also still getting small gaps (like <br> spaces) between all images in Outlook when displaying perfectly (no gaps) in a browser.
This is my newsletter displaying correctly via a browser:

Using Dreamweaver 4 (do have the latest version via Adobe Creative Cloud Membership but not on this system).
    Hope you can help
    Many thanks

    Many thanks David
I also found this article which is currently sitting on my desk.
Pdf would make perfect sense or even a url link to view via a browser but these guys need it contained within the email.
Thanks again for your kind advice.

  • Mail not showing HTML properly in Leopard

    Hi there,
I've successfully been sending HTML newsletters out via the email application "Thunderbird" (which handles HTML well) on OSX to clients using mail. But since leopard's release, clients using Mail on said system don't seem to receive HTML properly. All the hyperlinks are discarded etc.
Can anyone suggest any work around or shed some light on this please ASAP as it is urgent.
    Cheers,
    James

Not sure if this is related to your problem, but here goes...
I had the problem that Mail 3.0 was not displaying HTML properly after first installing Leopard. Mail from various sources would display as plain text, instead of HTML. The NY Times does not look so great that way. It was messy... I found information on this forum to edit the com.apple.mail.plist file with a program called PrefSetter. The default was set to "prefer plaintext". I changed the value to false, and it works well now. Every now and then it still does it, but I can fix it by shutting down and restarting Mail.app.

  • Email Marketing & Newsletters

    Hi Guys
My client would like to send email marketing/newsletters based on their website design.
My question: what is the best/easiest way to send Dreamweaver designed html newsletters? What to avoid, what to make sure, how to avoid that it comes in the junk mailboxes, how do I make it "light" so they won't get 2MB in their mailboxes, how can I send it once it's finished?
I work on Mac, and I have Safari, Firefox and Chrome installed. I remember sending newsletters was possible via Safari but can I also try this another way?
    Thanks
    Bob

HTML email can be a bit tricky, here's some of the do's and don'ts...
    Do:
    Use tables for layout
Use absolute links to images stored on your server for any images in the email
    Use html text whenever possible
Use a limited amount of inline css when necessary
    Use a service like http://www.constantcontact.com or http://www.icontact.com
    Don't:
Use external .css files or embedded (in the <head> section) css
    Use css for layout
    Use only images
Try to embed images or attachments
    Use reletive links for anything
    Use javascripts
Expect it to function or look exactly like your website
Send thousands of emails from a personal or corporate email account
Because of the vast differences in email clients, it is pretty difficult to get "a page from your site" to function correctly via email. It's best to "dumb down" the html of the site to fit what I have above. There are other concerns to consider, but the above will cover most of the problems you'll run into and give you decent cross-client compatibility.
The services I list above go even further to keep your email from being caught as spam, I highly recommend using them for both the creation and delivery of your email.

  • Is there a way to create "real" superscript in Dreamweaver?

I know how to use the tags to superscript type, but the problem is that the type within those tags doesn't reduce in size.  I'm looking for a way to create a true superscript.  Can anyone give me a way to do this?

OK, the bottom half of the site, everything below where the navigation is would move to the right when youe made the browser window wider.  The only tow things that didn't move in that area where the 20 year graphic and the floating box on the right.
I asked my client, who does her own updating to content with Dreamweaver CS5 to re-upload the site files so you were probably looking at those files.  Here is a screen shot of what I got when I opened the site template in a browser:
I have not yet gotten the files that my client has put up.  I can paset the code for this page here so you can take a look.  It has to be coming from this file because this file runs how the site looks.  I'm just stumped.
Also the page that needed the superscript is the Events and Seminars page.  Last line of the October 15-19, 2012 listing.  No matter which of the scripting suggestions I used, I still ended up with the last line's leading being more than the rest of the paragraph and the smaller "SM" not rendering as smaller in Safari or Firefox??
Here's the page code for the template page:

  • Possible to change sidebar div from left to right?

I'm just starting to design completely using CSS...very tough to change. I have a home page roughed out with a sidbar nav on the left BUT I'm thinking it may be a bit more mobile friendly if I move it to the right and allow the content to be all the way to the left. Here is my initial design: http://www.duenorthdesign.com/pcm
Then I switched a float left for the sidebar to float right. Then deleted the large left margin of my content div so it went to the left. Here is what I have: http://www.duenorthdesign.com/pcm/index-rightnav.html
From here, I just don't know what to do! I'm sure there are other things to change, but it's just not very obvious to me. Tables seemed so much more designer-friendly   Thanks in advance.

The new HTML source code follows:

  • Gap in second level spry menu (Horizontal menu)

    Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help me?!!
I've been developing a new website for my shool, with a horizontal spry menu bar.  It all works fine, but when you select the third level menu on the spry, a gap emerges between the second and third level.  Whislt it doesn't effect the functionality, it doesn't look very good!
I've attached a picture below to illustrate the problem, as you can see when the user clicks on the "For Parents" submenu, the next level, (starting with "Heads Welcome"), is seperated.   Please, please, please, can anyone tell me how to fix this, I'm getting desperate!
Thank you so much in advance.

Hi, Thank you Gramps.  I'll have a play with a new Spry and see how it looks.  I have tried to adapt my current one, and it seems to work well in Safari, Chrome or IE8, but doesn't work on my computer running IE9?  Any ideas? Thanks again,Richard
