Http URL.openConnection() - URLConnection, not HttpURLConnection

Is there any way of calling openConnection on an http URL object, and not getting a HttpURLConnection?
HttpURLConnection extends the URLConnection class in frequently-useful ways, for example by defaulting the Accept and Content-Type headers on requests (plus the frequently baffling getOutputStream/getErrorStream behaviour). However in some contexts, these extensions are profoundly unhelpful.
In particular, if I'm writing test code, I want to be able to make HTTP requests with missing Content-Type or Accept headers -- that is, without the default values which HttpURLConnection adds -- and there appears to be no way to do that, short of writing my own HTTP protocol handler.
Failing that, is there any way of deleting request headers from a HttpURLConnection? The obvious connect.setRequestProperty("header", null) doesn't do it (and isn't documented to).
Best wishes,
Norman

Thanks for that. The apache.commons.net classes look useful, but I think they end up being a little too low-level. The URLConnection class does usefully abstract the boring details of the HTTP transaction -- the only problem is that HttpURLConnection tries a little too hard.
I think my question really boils down to the following: is there a way of switching off the extra functionality/defaults in HttpURLConnection? (if so, it's insufficiently clearly documented).
I remember submitting an RFE to this effect a while ago, but can't find the entry in the bugs database (I apparently can't search for 'submitter').

  • The https URL hostname does not match the Common Name (CN) on the server.

    Hi,
    I am getting the following error while trying to use https with our self-signed certificates.
    javax.xml.ws.soap.SOAPFaultException: Marshalling Error: The https URL hostname does not match the Common Name (CN) on the server certificate. To disable this check (NOT recommended for production) set the CXF client TLS configuration property "disableCNCheck" to true.
    The above error is the error I get, when I try to use the Web Services using https.
    I have added the following lines in cxf.xml but it still doesn't seem to work correctly.
    <http-conf:conduit name="*.http-conduit">
    <!-- deactivate HTTPS url hostname verification (localhost, etc)

    Kindly let me know on what would be the issue here?.

    I had P2V'd a SQL 2008 server and was having this issue.  I tried everything I could find to get the affinity corrected; setting the Lock Pages security policy, trying the affinity commands in Single User mode, etc.
    Then wrighbar's response got me headed in the right direction, but I ran into an issue where the previous engineer had set the Physical SQL server to have affinity on procs 9-16 of a 16 proc box, I could only set up to 8 procs on my VM.  After searching
    for a while for registry keys or config files that might be editable to change the affinity I couldn't find where SQL got that information from.  Finally it hit me, maybe it's stored in the master or msdb datatbases.
    SOLUTION: I was able to go back to the original Physical machine, change the affinity settings there, Stop SQL on both boxes, then copied MASTER, MODEL, MSDB, TEMPDB from the original Physical machine to the new virtual machine.  All services started
    OK on the virtual machine now and affinity was set the way I needed it.

  • URL.openConnection() odes not work

    I am trying to make a applet talk to a servlet.
    i am using the foll code snippet:
    URL url = new URL(TARGET_URL);
    URLConnection con = url.openConnection();
    con.setDoOutput(true);
    con.setDoInput(true);
    OutputStream out = con.getOutputStream();
    out.writeObject(obj);
    out.flush();
    out.close();
    I am not getting any error msg. However, i find the servlet is not invoked properly. I am nt getting the SOP printed on the weblogic server console.
    If i try opening the servlet thru the applet in a new browser window, it works fine.
    wht could the problem be?

    You need to access the input stream
    otherwise the data from the output stream
    is not send to the server.

  • "https" url with URLConnection

    If I use URLConnection to connect to a servlet with a https url, and supposed I have the required CA public key loaded in my keystore, would that turn on ssl connection?
    Thanks in advance.
    =yu

    after more reading... yes, it will work (Notice that for previous version of JSK1.4.2, the protocol handler should be set correctly), the URL/URLStreamHandler class will do the runtime binding for a specific protocol.

  • Post data to https URL not working!!

    I currently have an issue with tunnelling through a 1.1 proxy with JSSE.
    I used the SSLTunnelSocketFactory class (as defined in http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/javatips/jw-javatip111-p2.html) and
    tried to use it in my code.
    Unfortunately, it doesn't work.
    I'm trying to connect to a secure (https) website and post some xml to
    it then read the response.
    I write the xml to the output stream and then try to open the input
    stream for reading back the response.
    I get the following error:
    Connection aborted by peer: socket write error
    Does anyone have an example of code that will do a post of xml (or any
    data) to a secure URL and read the results? Whether it's using apache's
    httpclient, JSSE or something else?
    Thanks for any help you can give.

    Here's the code where it tries to connect:
    String proxyHost = "212.120.142.235";
    String proxyPort = "8088";
    String response = "";

    System.setProperty("https.proxyHost",proxyHost);
    System.setProperty("https.proxyPort",proxyPort);
    url = "https://website/remote.cgi";
    URL remoteURL = new URL(url);
    HttpsURLConnection connection = (HttpsURLConnection)remoteURL.openConnection();
    if(connection instanceof com.sun.net.ssl.HttpsURLConnection){
    ((com.sun.net.ssl.HttpsURLConnection)connection).setSSLSocketFactory
    (new SSLTunnelSocketFactory(proxyHost,proxyPort));

    System.out.println( "Error writing xml"+ioe.getMessage());
    return;
    String inputLine = null;
    try {
    InputStream is = connection.getInputStream();
    InputStreamReader isr = new InputStreamReader(is);
    BufferedReader bufferedreader = new BufferedReader(isr);
    while ((inputLine = bufferedreader.readLine()) != null) {
    response += inputLine;
    bufferedreader.close();

    Hi, the problem is to do with the HTTP 1.1 proxy, not SSL itself.
    Basically, if you connect through a proxy that is a 1.1 proxy, the
    JSSE classes check for HTTP/1.0 in the status of the connection to
    the proxy. This will fail due to the fact that HTTP/1.1 is returned
    as part of the string (see javaworld url above for description of problem).
    Anyway, my problem is trying to implement a workaround. My post
    to the SSL site isn't working correctly.

  • Call http url in Abap - Should not open Browser

    Hi Friends,
       I have a requirement where i need to check whether a perticular http service is running or not. For that i need a some code to call http url from abap and it should not open the browser. If that perticular url is not found or time out then i should know that in program...

    http://<abaphost>.<domain>.com:<port>/sap/public/ping
    to get the values for http://<abaphost>.<domain>.com:<port> just go to transaction se80 and choose bsp application option and choose any existing bsp application and then doubl click on a page. on the right side click on the attributes tab and at the end you can find the url

  • GRMG RFC Configuration "HTTP method GET is not supported by this URL"

    Hi All,
    when i create the RFC Destinaton for SLD  with regards to GRMG Configuration and test the rfc i get the Reason code 400 with error "HTTP method GET is not supported by this URL".
    Even if i call  http://hostname:port/sld/rtc in the browser i get the same error.
    RFC Details:
    Target machine:Host
    Service No: port no
    path prefix: /sld/rtc
    My other RFC destinations for rwb,IR,ID,Adapter Engine works well.
    I would appreciate your suggestions on this
    Aravind

    Hi David,
    I feel sorry to wake this thread up after long time.
    It's the same situation, connection testing for SLD returns 400 "HTTP method GET is not supported by this URL".
    However, CCMS hearbeat seems to work fine with SLD. It returns green.
    I have a question here. Is it OK if we leave it that way without changing GRMG?
    Is there any potential problem, or side effect when the RFC destination returns 400?
    Thank you very much,

  • WSRP Provider reg not working with https url

    Our portal is configured with https, listening to a virtual host (https://portalpilot:4443)
    In order to consume WSRP / JSR168 java portlets we
    - created a new OC4J container (wsrp_dev)
    - installed the portlet-container ( $MIDTIERHOME/j2ee/wsrp_dev/ java -jar wsrp-install.jar)
    - started the container & deployed the samples
    all OK
    but when trying to register the (tested & OK ) url https://portalpilot:4443/portalapp?WSDL
    in the Provider Registration we got an error (error in provider url)
    changing the url to the non-ssl host (http://gogol:7777) was the (pseudo) solution.
    is this behavior by design? we would like to use SSL throughout

    OOS,
    Did the info in the release notes solve your problem?
    It seems to me that the release notes address a similar but different issue. You want to run under https. The release notes are instructing you to change all references to https to http in the WSDL file. I don't see how this would fix the problem of trying to register a WSRP provider with a WSDL URL that uses https.
    The reason I ask is because I am encountering the same problem.
    Thanks.

  • Question about (HttpURLConnection)url.openConnection();

    Greetings Java Experts.
    I have a question about the following code snippet.
    As you can see below this snippet will establish a connection.
    Question how long will it allow for the connection to be established - for example if the web traffic is taking an unusually long period of time can I set it to a higher value ?
    connection = (HttpURLConnection)url.openConnection();
         HttpURLConnection.setFollowRedirects(true);
         connection.setInstanceFollowRedirects(true);
         connection.setUseCaches(false);

    forever, unless you set SO_TIMEOUT

  • Error: HTTP method GET is not supported by this URL

    Hey,
    I am attempting to overload the doGet method with a Wrapper class I created for HttpServletReponse that extends it of course and I receive this error: "HTTP method GET is not supported by this URL". I figure you can't change the method as I have but I am curious if there is anyway I can go about to accomplish what I am trying to do. Basically I just need to extend the HttpServletResponse so that it contains a few more variables and such.
    public class test extends HttpServlet {
        public void doGet(HttpServletRequest request,  XmlServletResponseWrapper response) throws ServletException, IOException{
            response.setContentType("text/html");
            PrintWriter out = response.getWriter();
            out.println("<html>");
            out.println("<head>");
            out.println("</head>");
            out.println("<body>test</body>");
            out.println("</html>");

    public void doGet(HttpServletRequest request, XmlServletResponseWrapper response)
    is not the same method as
    public void doGet(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response)
    The servlet container is going to call the later method and since you did not overwrite it to provide an implementation it sees the GET request as not being supported.
    what you are looking to do is something like this:
    public void doGet(HttpServletRequest request,  HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException{
            XmlServletResponseWrapper myResponse = (XmlServletResponseWrapper ) response;
            myResponse .setContentType("text/html");
            PrintWriter out = myResponse .getWriter();
            out.println("<html>");
            out.println("<head>");
            out.println("</head>");
            out.println("<body>test</body>");
            out.println("</html>");

  • Weblogic does not call the ProxySelector class for http url

    We are using weblogic server for our project. I have created a ProxySelector class and made it the default in my code. When my code tried to access the external url, the ProxySelector is called for socket url but not http url. Because of this, I am not able to return any HTTP proxy object from the ProxySelector and it fails.
    Note: The code works fine if I execute it from tomcat.

    Hi This is the method that I have for invoking webservices. It uses a Dispatch API. The myProxySelector is an instance of MyProxySelector which is already made defult in the appication startup.
    This MyProxySelector has a threadlocal variable useProxy to indicate whether the proxy should be used or not. so I am setting the variable just before reply = dispatch.invoke(sm);

  • Attaching a URL which does not start with HTTP / HTTPS in SAP TM

    Dear Experts,
    I am trying to insert a new URL to a Attachments table in FWO / FRB application.
    My URL neither start with HTTP  nor HTTPS (Ex: Z3://searchsmartstart...). while I am trying to insert such URL, I am getting an error message 'URL not valid.Check if the URL contains the protocol (HTTP/HTTPS). Message ID - /SCMTMS/UI_MESSAGES and message number 088.
    After some analysis, I have understood that WebDynpro ABAP framework does not accept such URL.
    Could you please guide, is there any other way of doing it? The URL which I am trying to access is of SMART CLIENT.
    Thanks in advance for your reply.
    Thanks,
    Bharath.K

    Hi Bharath,
    Yes, you can achieve the same via URL redirection. Please follow the below steps.
    1.Create a service in SICF e.g. sap/bc/redirect_z3 in your SAP TM system and follow following steps.
    2. Create a class with interface IF_HTTP_EXTENSION e.g. ZCL_REDIRECT_URL
    3. Maintain  class created in step 2 into the Handler List of the service created in step 1.
    4. In class ZCL_REDIRECT_URL Method IF_HTTP_EXTENSION~HANDLE_REQUEST write below code
                        Data: lv_target type string.
                           lv_target = 'Z3://searchsmartstart.......'
                          server->response->redirect( url = lv_target ).
    5. You can also read the parameter from the source URL with below program code
    CALL METHOD server->request->get_form_data
        EXPORTING
          name = 'PAR1'
        CHANGING
          data = lv_par1.
    6. Now attach the URL of your service created in step 1(Which will be http/https URL) to Attachments table in FWO / FRB application with parameter you want.
    Now once you click this URL , Mehtod IF_HTTP_EXTENSION~HANDLE_REQUEST in Handler list class will execute here you can read the parameter as mentioned above and form a target URL and redirect to you intended target .
    Thanks, Pravin
