Huawei E220 HSDPA modem (Vodafone Vodem) stopped working

Hi there,
My faithful Powerbook is having issues with a company issued Vodafone Vodem (Huawei E220 wireless HSDPA 3G USB modem).
It worked well at first, but then after restarting, waking from sleep or rebooting from off, the Vodem would cease to connect to Vodafone, with the Vodafone Modem Software giving me a cryptic message "No modem or data card attached".
Yesterday, I tried reinstalling and uninstalling the software, and after several installation/uninstallations, it finally reconnected. It has since stopped working again since shutting down the Powerbook overnight. Reinstalling has not yet worked.
I read somewhere on the net that leaving the modem plugged in for a minute before attempting to connect might work - alas no such luck.
Has anyone else out there had problems with their Vodafone/Huawei E220 USB wireless modem, and how did you resolve the problem?
I have tried both the New Zealand 2.07 version, plus the European 2.08 version of the Vodafone connectivity software.
I am running a Powerbook 15", 1.67ghz, MacOS 10.4.11, 512MB, no other peripherals connected.

hi
I'm using a vodem on my Intel mac book and never even use the software vodafone provide as it is clunky, slow and unreliable.
i used it once to set up the connection and from then on have simply connected through system preferences:network: and connect the huawei modem from there. it even gives you the option of having an icon in your top tool bar.
hope this helps
cheers

  • Huawei E220 HSDPA USB modem on MacBook Pro

    Hello
    I'm trying to get the Huawei E220 usb modem to work on my MacBook Pro, but without luck so far. When I plug it in, nothing happens (except for a green LED blinking on the modem), but it doesn't appear anywhere in the system preferences / networking settings.
    I tried to find some software for macos for this modem, without luck ... there is a dashboard application from Vodafone (Mobile Connect), but it is available for PPC only.
    On the other hand, I found quite a few resources on the internet that mentioned that this modem should work on a MacBook Pro, which is why I got it in the first place.
    Does anyone have a hint.. maybe? Please?

    Plug in the modem when computer is on WAIT klick on the installt the software screen to run the software from the modem,(mine Huawei E220 from ,3.dk)install the software WAIT, type in the phone number when requered(if required), my standard password when i start the modem is 1234 you can change that(or use old ), and then connect to the internet manuelly(automatic if it is set up for that), dont connect the modem to the internet, if you want to adjust the modem so it vill start connecting automatic or to make other adjustments my computer L40-18R

    Hi Karol.
    I've read that article and i've used mkwvconf to configure my ISP before postting here, but i thought that user and pasword were not necessaries and i was wrong. I've need set Username and Password to empty string.
    My configuration is:
    [Dialer Jazztel]
    Modem Type = Analog Modem
    Phone = *99***1#
    ISDN = 0
    Baud = 460800
    Username = ''
    Password = ''
    Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
    Init1 = AT+CPIN=MyPIN
    Init2 = ATZ
    Init3 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
    Init4 = at+cgdcont=1,"ip","jazzinternet"
    Stupid Mode = 1
    Now works.
    Thanks and best regards.

  • Struggling to connect by Huawei E220 3G modem

    Hey there!
    I got one of those 3G modems that are quite common still where I live. Now I had it up and running perfectly fine in Ubuntu thanks to the sorcery of NetworkManager Applet 0.7.0.
    I followed the instructions in the Arch wiki, but as connect I get the following output:
    thoht@wind: huawei-e220> sudo wvdial hsdpa
    --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.60
    --> Cannot get information for serial port.
    --> Initializing modem.
    --> Sending: ATZ
    ATZ
    OK
    --> Sending: ATZ
    ATZ
    OK
    --> Sending: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
    ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
    OK
    --> Modem initialized.
    --> Sending: ATDT*99#
    --> Waiting for carrier.
    ATDT*99#
    CONNECT
    --> Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately.
    --> Starting pppd at Mon Jan 19 04:54:31 2009
    --> Pid of pppd: 2836
    --> Using interface ppp0

    --> primary DNS address 80.251.192.244
    --> secondary DNS address 80.251.192.245
    ...but if I try to ping anything or visit a website in my browser, nada.
    This is the ifconfig output while "connected":

    This is my /etc/resolv.conf:
    thoht@wind: ~> cat /etc/resolv.conf
    # Generated by dhcpcd from eth0
    # /etc/resolv.conf.head can replace this line
    search serva.net
    nameserver 192.168.0.1
    # /etc/resolv.conf.tail can replace this line
    I tried putting this here instead but without success, however I think it's crucial that I put this somewhere:
    search bredband.tre.se
    nameserver 80.251.201.177
    nameserver 80.251.201.178
    In Ubuntu NetworkManager automagically put this stuf in /etc/resolv.conf for me, but it doesn't seem to make a difference here?
    Well then there's of course the /etc/wvdial.conf file:
    thoht@ratatosk: ~> cat /etc/wvdial.conf
    [Dialer hsdpa]
    Phone = *99#
    Username = foo
    Password = blargh
    Stupid Mode = 1
    Dial Command = ATDT
    Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0
    Baud = 460800
    Init2 = ATZ
    Init3 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
    ISDN = 0
    Modem Type = Analog Modem
    If I leave username and password empty the program gets pissed, but I don't actually have a username, nor PIN (activated).
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    About your resolv.conf copy/pasting - /etc/ppp/resolv.conf and ip-up:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=62520
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=62004
    I think its time for me to add that to the wiki... if its not already there.
    Thou I don't know if it solves your problem in this case, since you said you edited the resolv.conf.
    EDIT: Posted too fast again. I just saw this
    --> primary DNS address 80.251.192.244
    --> secondary DNS address 80.251.192.245
    search bredband.tre.se
    nameserver 80.251.201.177
    nameserver 80.251.201.178
    Same? Purposely put different DNS? /etc/ppp/resolv.conf

  • Vodafone premium stopped working after contract renewal

    I have just renewed my vodafone contract for another 12 months and opted for another 12 months spotify premium. I used the link that vodafone text to me and logged in with the facebook option and all seemed fine. I then tried to use spotify on my iphone or laptop its saying that im on a free account and not a premium. However when I log onto the spotify website it shows that I am a premium user ? Whats the problem. I have spoken to vodafone and they said its all looking fine at their end and have referred me to spoify. PLEASE HELP...

    More details
    The software Design and Web Premium CS6 was purchased / installed / and activated just over 30 days ago
    All components worked fine after install
    30 days after install Acrobat X just stopped working - it will not startup - no error message seen - just does not starup (not even the hour glass). All other components still work fine.
    Beta CS6 Software and prerelease CS6 Software had previously been deactivated and uninstalled prior to install.
    System is 64 bit Windows 7, CS6 64 bit - 8GB RAM, Duo Core 3GHZ Intel, AMD 6870 1GB GPU.
    Google the same issue and you'll find there are numerous people who have the same problem - current recommendation from Adobe is to deactivate and activate again. This sounds like another 30 day workaround

  • Time Capsule used as router attached to Comcast Modem. wireless stops working. All I have to do is unplug the TC and plug it back in and TC cycles up and have green light as well as the Comcast modem operates correctly. TC 4 yrs old. How do I correct?

    Time Capsule used as router attached to Comcast Modem. Wireless stops working with no light showing and Link indicator on modem off.
    All I have to do is unplug the TC and plug it back in.
    TC cycles up and green light appears as well as the Comcast modem operates correctly.
    TC 4 yrs old. How do I correct?

    I have the latest and greatest Time Capsule and Comcast. Here is the weird thing. If I have one network set up, then occasionally that network will wedge. If I set up a 5GHz and a 2.4GHz network, then one of them (usually the 5GHz) will wedge. I saw this with a previous Time Capsule, Apple said call Comcast. They checked it out and said it was Apple's problem. Apple said maybe you Time Capsule is bad, so I bought a new one. The problem persists.
    Tonight it's not complely wedged, but super slow. The 5GHz network is getting 0.45Mb/s while the 2.4GHz network is getting 17Mb/s. Both are coming in from the same Comcast cable modem. Apparently the Time Capsule treats them as separate.
    Is it the cable modem or the Time Capsule. I am betting on the Time Capsule, since rebooting it fixes the problem. Resetting the cable modem does not.
    Apple is NO HELP at all. They say reset the Time Capsule. Did that fix it? Yes. Problem solved! No, problem not solved. It will happen again in a few hours.

  • Huawei E220

    OK, I have this modem and I cannot make it work unless I remove the usb_storage module. I suppose that I have a problem with usb_modeswitch, but I do not know what it might be.
    $ lsusb
    Bus 002 Device 011: ID 12d1:1003 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E220 HSDPA Modem / E230/E270/E870 HSDPA/HSUPA Modem
    Seems to show that it is set up as a modem, so I am not sure what is wrong and how to proceed.
    I notice that when I plug the modem in the module usb_storage is reloaded.
    Any help would be appreciated
    Andrew

    I removed usb_modeswitch and there is no change to the device vendor/product id shown in lsusb, modemmanager in networkmanager now shows the Mobile Broadband tab with the modem connection (which I created when the usb_storage module was removed before) but there is no Mobile Broadband listed under Interfaces. The module usb_storage is still installed. wvdialconf does NOT find the modem although /dev/ttyUSB0 and /dev/ttyUSB1 have been created. Removing usb_storage allows wvdialconf to find the modem at /dev/ttyUSB0 and shows Mobile Broadband in the Interfaces list.
    After reinstalling usb_modeswitch, the findings are exactly the same.
    Here is all the information I have:
    I have installed networkmanager 0.9.4.0-4 modemmanager 0.5.2.0-2 usb_modeswitch 1.2.3-1 and wvdial 1.61-4
    If I plug in the modem I see:
    $ lsusb
    Bus 002 Device 009: ID 12d1:1003 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E220 HSDPA Modem / E230/E270/E870 HSDPA/HSUPA Modem
    which, to me, says that it has been recognised and switched to a modem.
    In network manager the Mobile Broadband tab remained greyed out until I rmmod'ed usb_storage and filled inthe details, now it exists but the Modem is not listed under Interfaces.
    For wvdial I get, variously:
    $ wvdial vodafone
    --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.61
    --> Cannot open /dev/ttyUSB0: No such device
    --> Cannot open /dev/ttyUSB0: No such file or directory

  • Huawei ETS2288 USB modem

    Hi,
    My girlfriend and I work out in Tanzania most of the year. We recently acquired a Huawei ETS2288 USB modem and want to work on our MacBook Pro. Unfortunately the disk only had drivers for windows on it.
    Does anyone know either;
    1. Is there a driver for OS X so that we can use it
    or
    2. Does any tech type person out there know anyway we can get it up and running.
    Thanks
    James

    This is one of the very few problems I MIGHT be able to help you with. I'm new at owning a MAC, so bare with me. I'm stationed in Germany and had originally got Vodaphone for my internet provider which gave me a Huawei USB modem and the same problem, no software for MAC's. I had to go to Vodaphone's website (all German, that was fun) and find the software available for MAC computers. Try contacting your ISP that you got the modem from and see if they offer the same thing.

  • Using Huawei E220 and Airport at the same time?

    I use a Huawei E220 USB-modem to connect to internet. I also have a Time Capsule with a wireless network, but it's not connected to internet.
    When I acivate Airport to connect to Time Capsule, Internet Connection decides to overlook my Huawei connection and dub the AirPort network as my internet connection. Even if there is no internet there. How can I convince Internet Connection to use the Huawei for internet if it is connected?
    I don't have this problem on my 10.5 MacBook. Thanks! Joachim

    Use the options in System Preferences -> Network to set the service order (via the buttons in the lower left corner) such that the USB modem is above the AirPort interface. That way the OS will use that interface first while still using the AirPort to talk to the Time Capsule on its separate network.

  • Problems with Vodafone/Huawei E220 wireless usb Modem

    Hi there,
    My faithful Powerbook is having issues with a company issued Vodafone Vodem (Huawei E220 wireless HSDPA 3G USB modem).

    No experience, but what happens if you log out then back in?
    Does a New User have that problem?

  • Firmware updated, now I can´t use Huawei E220 modem

    I´m at the end of my tether.
    I have an i-mac running OSX 10.4.8 if I remember correctly.
    Yesterday (2nd October 2007) my mac downloaded a firmware update.
    I let it install the firmware update and then when I tried to get on the net with my Huawei E220 modem it no longer worked.
    I deleted the vodafone mobile connect program, used my windows xp laptop (with my Huawei E220 modem) to download the mac installation software for the modem, and re-installed the modem on my mac, but I still have the same problem:
    I click on the vodafone mobile connect icon and the icon starts bouncing up and down... but it doesn´t open the programme window, and doesn´t respond - it´s the first crash I´ve ever seen on the Mac. I don´t know a lot about macs and need help with this problem - I even shut the mac down, and turned it on again holding the "on" button in, incase there had been a problem with the firmware. Can anyone tell me how to fix this? please?
    MacIgnoramos.

    doh! even a pc user probably could have told me how to do this:
    1) uninstall vodafone modem program "using the proper uninstall option of the program" - i.e. not simply dragging the icon to the trash can.
    2) re-install.
    3) sit back, and enjoy the mac again.

  • How to configure the rc.conf for a HUAWEI E220 modem

    Hello.
    I configured my HUAWEI E220 after the instructions in the wiki, and it's working well. BUT, I can't connect to the internet. I think that is because i didn't made any modifications at the network configurations in the rc.conf file. I don't know what to change. What should I write in it (i know that i can't use eth0 anymore, but what is the right interface for HUAWEI, ppp0, ttyUSB0...)? Thank you.

    I knocked together an RC script to start and stop the connection, which is ppp0
    from it:
    /usr/bin/wvdial three &> /dev/null &
    route add default gw 10.64.64.64 &> /dev/null &
    rm /etc/resolv.conf
    echo nameserver 208.67.222.222 >> /etc/resolv.conf
    perhaps this helps?

  • My Imac late 2012 running Yosemite does not recognise my Huawei 3g usb modem. itried to install Java bt still it does not although the same modem works with my MacBook pro . any help please

    My Imac late 2012 running Yosemite does not recognise my Huawei 3g usb modem. itried to install Java bt still it does not although the same modem works with my MacBook pro . any help please

    Hey there mbarikiwa,
    If your iMac still has not recognized the usb modem, I would use the troubleshooting for Yosemite USB issues in the following article:
    OS X Yosemite: If a USB device isn’t working
    If the device is connected to a USB hub:
    Make sure the device and the hub are the same speed. Connect USB 3.0 SuperSpeed devices to a USB 3.0 SuperSpeed HUB, USB 2.0 Hi-Speed devices to a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed hub, and so on.
    If the device doesn’t have a power cord and is plugged into another USB device that doesn’t have a power cord:
    Try plugging the device directly into your computer’s USB port  or into a USB device that does have a power cord. You might need to disconnect and reconnect the other device as well, if it has stopped responding.
    If you have many devices connected to your Mac:
    Disconnect all USB devices except the device you’re testing, an Apple keyboard, and an Apple mouse. Make sure that the device is connected directly to the computer, and that any hubs or extension cables are disconnected. If you can use the device now, the problem may be with one of the other USB devices or hubs you had connected to your computer. Try reconnecting them, one by one, to your computer. When you find the device causing the problem, review its documentation for further troubleshooting steps.
    Verify that the device appears in System Information:
    Choose Apple menu > About This Mac. In the window that appears, click Overview, then click the System Report button to open System Information.
    In the window that appears, see if the USB device is listed below Hardware in the Contents list. If the device appears but does not work, review the device’s documentation for further troubleshooting steps.
    Restart apps:
    Quit and restart any apps that use the device.
    Restart your Mac:
    Choose Apple menu > Restart.
    Check your device’s USB connection
    Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    First you should try logging out of your iTunes Store account (settings > iTunes Store > accounts) and then back in again.
    If that doesn't help, try resetting the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings). You should also try restarting your router.
    If both of the above don't help, you should try a restore (Settings > General > Reset > Restore).
