HUGE charges accidentally accrued

So just took out of country vacation and had my Droid X on most of the time as my alarm clock, and to use the free wi-fi from the hotel. I get to the states and having never made a single call or text from out of country my line is suspended for a 500-1000 roming charge. Is this right? I never used the phone for voice or test services but email was used (i thought gmail was employed through the hotel wi-fi). Please advise anyone who has experience and also let me know how to go about getting these charges dismissed. Thanks.

I am facing a similar kind of issue - misscommunication on change of rule while initiating roaming services. Initially while traveling to Canada - I used to get unlimited data roaming services for couple of $ more. But this rule recently got changed, which I was not aware and got few alrerts but treated those as false alert. Even, first time I had those alert when I had unlimited plan - I used to ignored. But the last trip rule got changed to limited roaming data now my bill is more than $ 1100. I have requested customer support but all in vain!! NO HELP AS OF NONE.
As a matter of fact - I should have been properly warned that its a limited data plan before activating my services - when plan got changed rather than sending SMS ALERT. And factoring that as mode of communication. During the unlimited data plan on prior visit I got those SMS ALERT and they were just FASLSE ALERT.
HOW I AM SUPPOSE TO KNOW IF THIS IS RIGHT OR FALSE ALERT?? IS ANY ONE AT VERIZON LISTENING!!!

  • Connected to wifi but at midnight I am charged for "mobile data" on 3G (iPhone 4s)

I am on the Vodafone network and housebound. My iPhone 4s is connected to internet via wifi.
I have been incurring huge charges from Vodafone as a result of "mobile data downloads" ...which always occur at midnight when I am connected by wifi
I have had my phone looked at in a Vodafone store and they indicate that there doesn't appear to be any untoward apps on my phone.
I suspected the culprit to be the "Songpop" app and posted a message on their forum.
"Songpop" said this was a problem with my ISP but this has been ruled out as there aren't any drops in internet connection from by my ISP (they have looked at connection logs).
The official response from "Songpop" on their forum is that this an "Apple Support" issue. See here: http://support.songpop.fm/songpop/topics/playing_songpop_on_phone_via_wifi_but_i ncurring_download_data_charges_for_3g_useage?utm_content=topic_link&utm_medium=e mail&utm_source=reply_notification
Can anyone throw any light on this issue  as I have a very expensive bill to pay from Vodafone and I have not downloaded anything to my phone by 3G ...  and I rarely use 3G when away from home ... and if I do use away from home then I do not stream videos etc.
    Please help

Without looking at specific parts of your issue, here's how to turn cellular access off completely but keep your WiFi active:
Go to Settings > Airplane Mode and turn it on.
After doing that, go to Settings > WiFi and turn that on.
Then you will have WiFi and no cellular access.

  • I'm accruing data usage when I'm connected to wifi

I'm positive that Verizon is committing Fraud.
10 days ago my husband and I switched from Sprint to Verizon and got new Galaxy S5 phones.  While with Sprint, my husband used about 1.5GB of data a month and I used .5GB a month.  The reason my usage was less was because I use my phone less (duh) but also because my phone very often wouldn't connect to their service, 3G or their so called 4G at all.  My husband didn't have this problem, but I got so fed up with the connectivity that we switched to Verizon.  We thought that since I would be able to use my phone a little more and the data would be faster and more reliable, it would be prudent to buy 3GB of data a month even though we were only averaging 2GB before.
Well, after having Verizon for 10 days, we have used 2.3GB between the two of us; .5GB for me and 1.8GB for my husband.  In other words, our data usage has MORE THAN TRIPLED with Verizon.  This is absolutely wrong, so I did some investigating.  I looked at the data usage details spreadsheet that Verizon posts online with the date, time and amount of each occurrence of data usage.  Be aware that we have wifi at home (where we are basically every night from 7pm-7am) and my husband has wifi at work (weekdays 8am-5pm).  I was SHOCKED to see that the vast majority of my husbands outrageous usage was being incurred specifically during times when he was at work or home, even significant amounts at 2 and 3 o'clock in the morning.  Only a little usage was being accrued during the about 3 hours a day when he might not be connected to wifi.
I spent over an hour on the phone today (including 40 minutes on hold) with tech support.  They must have thought I was an idiot because they kept telling me about how our phones are using a lot of RAM.  I'm no IT expert, but RAM is internal memory and not equivalent to data usage.  Then they tried to tell me that the time stamps on our spreadsheets were delayed and that the data was really being used when not on wifi but not showing up on my account until some unknown period of time later. This is ******** and I debunked that theory by turning off my data (when there actually was no usage accrued) and then turned my data back on momentarily at 10:15am.  A usage charge popped up a little while later on my account time stamped 10:16am.  Pretty accurate, which tells me that the other time stamps are also accurate to within a minute or two; not off by many hours.
Then tech support told me to try a test to see if I can show that data is being accrued when I'm definitely not using it.  They told me to turn off my data for an extended period of time, use wifi only, and then check my account to see if data charges are accruing.  Well, of course data isn't accruing when data is off.  That proves nothing.  That does not have any bearing whatsoever on the fact that data usage is accruing when data service is ON but I'm CONNECTED to a reliable, strong, functioning WIFI signal like the one at my home and the one in my husband's office.  There are only two explanations left.  Either my husband and I are severely psyciatrically disabled and are imagining having working wifi signals and are somehow watching youtube videos in our sleep; OR VERIZON IS COMMITTING FRAUD.  Its one or the other, the way I see it.
IS THERE A REASONABLE SOLUTION TO THIS???  Resolving this issue by telling me to manually turn my data service on and off each time I come and go from my house is unacceptable.  Verizon, you need to fix your practices and remove the fraudulent usage from my account immediately.  Since I'm sure you won't, I'll be switching to AT&T since I still have 3 days to cancel my contract.  Third time is a charm, I hope.

I took it off WiFi and complained on their Facebook page.  I think their
salespeople telling folks to always stay on WiFi is their way of making
money!  Take your phones OFF of WiFi, put Task Killer Advanced (google play
store - FREE) on your phone and hit that repeatedly during the day.  It
will shut down the junk running in the background that loves to nom on your
data.  The other thing I do is to constantly dump cached data from my
phone.  We did all three of these things and we have only burned up .7 of
our 3GB limit since June 1st!  Not even a whole GB in 19 days!  Also,
remove all updates from every app that your phone came with (bloatware)
every so often. And shut the phone down every night after you run the task
killer and empty your data cache. Somewhere along the line I will learn how
to completely uninstall that darned bloatware and I will pass it on!
Let me know if this makes a difference for you!

  • Charge off being DELETED!!! Advice needed!

Hi all! So, I successfully received a EARLY DELETION as a Good Will from a student loan (private) that charged off in 2010 -- the lender finally agreed to remove this completely from my report today and submitted the electronic request to the bureaus today to delete it from my report and cosigners. This was a huge charge off and absolutely destroyed our credit 5 years ago ($25,000 charge off) - it docked us 75 points or so. Each! It was awful and my father wouldn't speak to me for months, as I defaulted and didn't tell him (young and dumb).
My question is -- once this comes off, even though it's 5 years old now, will it have any impact on my FICO or report as a whole ? My oldest account is from 2001 (13 years) and this account was opened in 2006, but I have many other accounts opened in 2003-2004 so I'm not too worried about AAofA. I do know eveytime a lender pulls my report for a manual review they note the massive charge off and it often hinders my approvals.
So any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, the account was PIF after he charge off in 2010 by my father ($27,000) but they refused then to PFD or change status. Any advice would be appreciated ! My father is very happy to see it go, as his AAofA is 35-40 years !! Thank you all!

It doesn't make sense to me. I bought Essentials and it automatically upgraded Scorewatch to Fico 8. I called customer service and they couldn't even tell me how often my Fico score updates! It's not daily because it still reads 7-27. I am needing to look at score updates every couple days. I certainly don't see the value in $20 a month if it's not even updated? Or there's a big lag. What's the point? I asked for clarification but they couldn't explain. They said it's all "random." That MyFico Fico Scores only update once a week, they don't know what day, and it's random. I don't see the value of the product. Scorewatch seemed way better.

  • Re: Extortionate Line Repair Charge Taken from my ...

My parents, one of which is an OAP have reached the end of their limit in trying to resolve this issue with BT, therefore I am posting this here on their behalf to see if this issue can be resolved before writing to the Communications Ombudsman and Local/National Papers.
Earlier this year there was a fault on the line and a tree blown over on my parents road, none of which was their fault. After some time a BT engineer arrived and spoke to them for approximately 10 minutes and then went to fix the exchange at the end of the road. Which didn't appear to take him very long at all. After this the problem was resolved.
Except my parents noticed in their next bill a charge of almost £500 for a line repair. After spending hours trying to get hold of someone at BT that would be able to help them with this issue, they were assured that this money would not be taken from their account until it had been reviewed. To have £500 removed from their account would of course have a huge financial impact on them.
This money was then taken with the next payment, despite BT's assurance that it would not be, leaving them £500 short for that month.
Countless hours later of phone calls of being on hold and palmed off between different departments who appear to be staffed by employees who have no concern for this issue, there is still no one even attempting a resolution. My parent's have requested documents that detail what this huge charge was for, and each time they are promised this, every time of course they receive nothing.
We have all had enough of spending hours of our time phoning BT trying to find a resolution to this problem.
This is our last attempt to provide BT with an opportunity to resolve this issue before we take this to the Ombudsman and all other relevant institutions.
    Solved!

  • REFUND DISPUTE - CLASH OF CLANS UNAUTHORIZED PURCHASES RESULTING IN HUGE DEBITS WHICH I CANNOT AFFORD!

There are at least 40 charges relating to Clash of Clans gems which are a clear duplication which have been charged to my credit card resulting in huge charges which I cannot afford.  I have lodged disputes via every channel possible, reported a problem with every order/purchase all day yesterday but no response from Itunes on when they intend to refund me my money. I am so utterly dissapointed and at my witts end, I cannot have these charges, very worried stressed!

My son had a bill of over $450.00 that I cannot pay, he took my credit card so he could upgrade? I just about had a heart attack. Each purchase of these so called gems was $10-18.00 , when I looked at their app they show $4.99 being the most.  This is such a scam! I had to cancel my credit card to avoid more charges and forbid him to play this anymore.  We parents are getting ripped off. How can an 11 year old be expected to have this bill? I just sent an email as well.
Wish you luck as I cannot pay this either!

  • Serious Issue with "third party subscriptions" through text messages.

Forgive me for perhaps sounding dramatic. After having this experience I nearly paid the fee to break my contract and quit on cell phones all together. If apple gets the iPhone to a point where no cellular carrier is neccessary I will be the first to join the party. I'm going to start trying this skype thing this weekend. Anyway, I digress, here's what happened. I get my bill from AT&T and there is a charge for download activity for $3.99. Not the end of the world but I call the number to find out what the charge is all about because I thought I had an unlimited data plan. Turns out AT&T calls it a third party subscription fee. I argued that if AT&T is charging it on my bill as far as I'm concerned I'm not concerned about the details, I hold AT&T responsable for what they put on my bill. According to AT&T's rep I recieved a text message asking me if I wished to subscribe to their service. I don't do the text thing so I never read any message like this. HERE'S THE KICKER - BECAUSE I DID NOT RESPOND TO THE TEXT TO SAY NO THANKS I WAS AUTOMATICLY ENTERED INTO AN ILLEGAL CONTRACT TO PAY $3.99 MONTHLY FOR A SERVICE I'M NOT EVEN AWARE OF. I was absolutly irate. The ramifications are astronomical. This means I could get a limitless unexpected bill. I look at it this way: If I had to write a letter, address an envelope, and lick a stamp every time I got an advertisement in my snailmailbox, I would never get out of the house and I would have to get on welfare to afford the stamps. To me there is an obvious legal precidence here. I realize that this has more to do with AT&T than Apple. I simply want to emplore Apple to save us from a world of disintigrating business ethic. Cellular providers have gotten completely out of control. When I feel like I need a lawyer just to call AT&T to discuss the inconsistency of my bill there is a serious problem. I feel like entering into a contract with a cellular provider endangers my financial stability in a fragile era. It just seems rediculous for a business to become so arogant that they can speak nonsense to a customer and we are put in a position to defend against such nonsense. Several of my friends have run into the same issue with text third party subscriptions. Last night at a dinner party three indicated that they finally had all the cellular provider crap they could take and they canceled their iPhone service and put it up on ebay. I love my iPhone, it is the most useful piece of technology I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy. That being said, I cannot justify, as a household provider with a family depending on me, taking the risk of financial ruin (a $3000+ cell phone bill could do just that) initiated by arogant buisiness practaces that resemble the oppression I have witnessed through 12 years of military service in places with an excess of sand. I think it is apauling. I believe the FCC and FTC need to be brought into this. I intend to submit formal complaints to both and would encourage others that feel like I do to do the same.

Not to diss those trying to be helpful, but the do not call list has nothing to do with spam TXT messages sent from a computer, which is where the OP's problem probably began.
If a third party sent this message and then signed the OP up for a service he did not want, this violates any number of consumer laws and can be addressed that way. It's unclear whether this is really an AT&T issue at all, absent any evidence that it is their message or their service. It sounds to me like the CS reps do not understand the problem and are giving the not-helpful generic answer about spam TXTs. A much better solution is to set the SMS filters using AT&T's web site.
Similar scams work on landlines, where you can accidentally end up getting a huge charge on your phone bill for something that has nothing to do with the carrier.
I'd call the state consumer protection department.

  • Browser on 8310 SmartPhone Edge comes up with Critical Error and cannot be used, help please?

Hi, my name is Sater and I'm the lone I.T. guy for a small medical device company (about 40 ppl) based in Fremont, CA.  So...
All of a sudden my vp of marketing comes in and says that he can't use the Browser function on his BB (8310 SmartPhone Edge) anymore.  Naturally I'm intrigued, but this is a very strange error that pops up.  It doesn't matter how many settings I go in and change, there's no budging it.  Here is what it's telling me...
"Unable to connect to the selected Mobile Data Service, please try again later.  If the problem persists please contact your administrator."
So I decide after about an hour of messing with settings and getting nowhere to call AT&T support.  They said when that error comes up with "please contact your administrator", it's because it can't connect to the BES server anymore and that we would have to consult that with whomever runs that server.  To give you a little background, we went through an outsourced Exchange provider called TheMessageCenter.com. They were alright, but my VP of R&D was pretty bent by some of the lack of customer service skills they presented to him when he was in an email crisis.  Needless to say one of the very first missions I ever had at this place was to find a new email solution and integrate the migration.
So basically AT&T said they couldn't do anything and that I would have to contact our outsourced providor (TheMessageCenter.com, since we ran both Exchange and BES through them before we switched) back to get the settings cleared off the BES server hosting his phone Pin and info.  I called them up, (mind you we had been away from TheMessageCenter.com for a good couple weeks now) and they claimed they had no other active processes running for our company anywhere on their BES servers or frankly, ANYWHERE lol.  So naturally he's looking at me to fix this, and I am seriously stumped!  Should I do some kind of Factory reset?  If so, how can I load all his contacts/settings back the way he had it?  Any help on this matter, (especially if treated as urgent... I know you hate to hear that, but I said it for all you I.T. guys haha) would be GREATLY appreciated!!  Thanks

    Hi,
The browser icon uses the BES service, unless you have signed up for the BIS ONLY servcie, wherein you get access to the internet through RIM's servers.
Since your servcie is a BES servcie the access to the internet is through the BES.
The MDS is a service running on the BES to authenticate you. (and thus the error)
So, No BES = No  Internet access using the Browser icon!
So, I need a little clarificatuioin.
Did you move from one BES to another? Or did the user simply switch carriers?
It sounds as if you moved from one third company BES to another third company BES... Is that right?
If so then contact your New BES and ensure that they allow ppl to use the MDS servcie for internet access (Most companies charge extra for that feature! - Because they can!).
If your hosting the BES (Now), and it was Themessagingcentre.com before, then you need to Reactivate the Handset for the  new BES. I have a feeling that he is now getting the emails through the BIS service and the handset wasnt wiped and so it is stil trying to access the old BES....
So can you please give details such as:
BES - where was it hosted:
BES - where is it now hosted:
NEW BES: Is the MDS service enabled and can people currently use it to browse?
Have you tested with other BB handsets to ensure you/user  are clicking the same icons on both handsets (most ppl do different things to access in their own way, so simply asking them if it works doesnt help!)
The alternative is to use the expensive WAP browser. It will work but will rack up huge charges.
Let us know how it goes...

  • Disconnection problem need to find an email addres...

I'm trying to get a problem with my disconnection resolved. Basically, my husband lost his job in January and as I don't work due to ill health we were living off jobsekkers. This meant we struggled to pay the BT bill and as we needed a phone line and internet for job applications etc we wanted to keep it going. I phoned and told BT twice what our problem was and asked to set up a payment plan and was told I would get a callback to discuss how BT could help us through this situation. I did not receive a callback only bill reminders and disconnection threats. My support worker and also my mother spoke to them about this and the only help we got was our line reconnected but with full services for which we were being charged rather then incoming calls only. With the help of my support worker I was able to get most of the bill cleared, and as I had received a temrination notice and final bill with huge charges for contract cancellations etc, she phoned them to explain a cheque was arriving which would clear most of the balance and could we arrange to get reconnected as we could then manage to pay the final balance in instalments. She was told no we couldn't as the contract was cancelled. I complained about this and was told I would have to pay all of the charges for the cancellation plus a £50 deposit to enable me to set up a new contract. This would mean around £300 left to pay instead of about £80 odd. Having looked into their code of practice of how they will operate when their are financial difficulties, they did not follow this practice at all, and if they had have done so I believe I would not now be in this situation. I have tried their contact us page, to send them an email, but only get told to write to them of phone them. Only having a mobile I have no wish to call them, but want to contact them. I have drafted the following email to them: Further to my original message sent in to you, I now wish to lodge a formal complaint with yourselves regarding this matter, under your Code of Practice policy. As you should have a record of, I informed you no less than twice that I was having problems paying my bills as my husband lost his job, and since I do not work we were having to survive on his Jobseekers Allowance. You were then informed of this fact by my support worker and even by my mother in an effort to try and resolve the situation and sort out the outstanding and increasing bills. I have managed to pay an initial sum of £212.58 and the cheque should be with you now. Again you were phoned and informed of this in an attempt to stop any cancellation and disconnection on your part. Unfortunately it appears to have been too late as despite being told a large proportion of the bill was being paid off you proceeded to disconnect me and terminate my contract incurring further charges and meaning despite paying over £200 on the bill, you have now left me with more than £200 to pay off. I tried to resolve this matter by asking if the charges and contract cancellation could be waivered since a large payment had been sent and I was told that no that contract was now ended and the only way I could get service back was to pay the outstanding in full and a £50 deposit. This just is not possible at this time. My complaint is that my account has been handled wholly against your Code of Practice as despite informing you on 4 occasions that I was experiencing problems, at no time was I offered or even told of any of the services your Code of Practice states. The Code of Practice states: If you tell us that you’re having problems paying what you owe us, we’ll offer one or more of the following solutions. • A repayment plan. This will help you to pay the amount you owe over an agreed period. We may give you a BT Payment Card so you can make payments in instalments. When we agree the repayment plan, we’ll take your past payment history into account. • Restricted service. We may ask you to agree to have your service restricted to incoming calls only until the end of your repayment plan, if we believe this will help you to avoid a larger debt building up. In this case, we won’t charge for reconnecting the service. • Monthly Payment Plan. The amount you owe can be included within your Monthly Payment Plan payments, so you can spread the amount you owe. But we may ask you to make a payment upfront, depending on what’s best for you. • Call My Bill. This is our automated service on 0800 854 608 (this call is free from your landline). It allows you to check – between bills – how much you’re spending on calls. • View My Bill. It’s like Call My Bill but it’s online – go to www.bt.com • Call Barring for international and premium-rate calls. These types of calls may have added to your payment problems. • Claims for premium-rate services. We can give you advice and information about how to make a claim if unauthorised calls have been made to premium-rate services from your phone line. If you had followed your Code of Practice, I am firmly of the belief that my account would not have reached the termination stage and after sending you a payment of £212.58 my account would now be back up and running with no restrictions or disconnection. I trust you will look into my complaint, and find in my favour and I will have my account restored in the next few days. If I do not receive a satisfactory response form you in this matter, I will be reporting this to Ofcom. My question is, have they acted unfairly by not following thier code of practice and do I have a legitimate complaint or do I have to just forget it pay the bill and notch it up to experience! Also does anyone know how I can email them and it go to a manager rather than say customer services who will reply from what their manual states?

  • How can I use my iPad and iPhone in Europe without incurring high costs?

How can I use the iPad to communicate in the Netherlands without incurring huge charges?

Depends on how you are planning on communicating. If you use Wif, then no. If you are using cellular data, you would need to discuss this with your carrier. We wouldn't know here.

  • My New Every 2 disappeared from VZW computers when they were correcting upgrade to replacement

I have been a long time Verizon customer who has had New Every 2 ever since I started about 10 years or so ago. I used to have the old Western States calling plan which I switched to Nationwide 450 min plan 2 years ago when I changed to a Smartphone.
I got my $100 New Every 2 discount fine on that phone. Now I hear it went down to $50. But mine has disappeared from Verizon records (except for notes) apparently as part of their mixup when I replaced the defective smartphone (HTC Touch Pro 2). It was approved about 8 mo into my contract, but I was having trouble deciding what to replace it with (plus I was sick for several months so my brain wasn't into thinking about that). Before the year was up, I called the VZW rep who had agreed to the replacement (it was working but the backlight wouldn't always come on--sometimes I had to keep pressing it multiple times, as well as other issues).  I asked specifically if I had to do the replacement prior to the year being up. He said no, it had been agreed to so I didn't have to actually do it before the end of the year.
So I didn't. That led to multiple problems when I finally did replace it. Every step of the way, VZW was treating it as an upgrade rather than a replacement of the defective device.  They kept wanting to start a new 2 yr contract, etc & I kept telling them, no it was a replacement.  Wasted a lot of my time having to go over that each time I talked to a person. & finally, after i had adamantly refused to agree to a new 2 yr contract they said ok, but then I got a new 2 yr contract.  Ok, another call & they backed that out.
But the upgrade date was Dec 2012 instead of 2011 as it should have been. Another call. Finally they fixed that, but in so doing, rather than restore back to the original contract, they had me on mo to mo starting at the time of the replacement. & somehow in all that, the New Every 2 discount disappeared from the contract.
So I am just now upgrading--just got my new iPhone 4S which I trust will actually be a reliable smart phone for a change--but since the New Every 2 wasn't in the computer but just in the notes, I wasn't given the discount on the price, but she did give me a credit for that amount.
OK, now i'm concerned about next time. Is New Every 2 still available for those who have had it long term?
& how can I get it back in my contract, rather than just in the notes, so next time I don't have to go through all this again?
my previous phone had been a basic flip phone which just worked so I kept it for about 5 yrs before upgrading to the smart phone. I intended to keep it for several years, not expecting to have such defective WinMob phones. The replacement was a downgrade with less features & it has freezes & the alarms (which I count on) don't work well. I know smart phones are more complicated, but still. With 2 yr contracts it would be nice to have devices that actually last & work well for 2 years rather than having to have 2 devices, both of which have had issues during the 2 yr contract.
I trust the iPhone 4S will not only be a very useful & fun phone, but also a reliable one for a change, that I will keep for a while. But I am concerned about the status of New Every 2.
& now, soon I'm off to get my new iPhone 4S set up & activated at the Apple store.

    Thank you!
I actually just got off the phone with Verizon and thoroughly confused the Verizon Rep because he has never had that question asked before! He finally "tested" the new phone's activation status to see if the phone has been activated to my account, and he said it had (even though it is not actually associated with my number), and I can do what I want with the phone- store it, use it, let someone else use it, and not worry about the 30 day policy biting me in the b*tt with a huge charge of the phone's retail price!
Phew! I like it when it doesn't take weeks to get an answer (have had MANY hours on the phone with Verizon regarding diff. issues, and am always worried that problems and questions will take way too much time to answer).

  • Should I upgrade or get a new MacBook Pro?

Here are the specs for my macbook pro I have now:
    Model Name:    MacBook Pro 17"
      Model Identifier:    MacBookPro2,1
Processor Name:    Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:    2.33 GHz
      Number Of Processors:    1
      Total Number Of Cores:    2
L2 Cache (per processor):    4 MB
      Memory:    2 GB
      Bus Speed:    667 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:    MBP21.00A5.B08
      SMC Version:    1.14f5
    MacBook OS X  Version 10.4.11
We got it in February of 2007 and I'm just not sure what we should do.  Does anyone have a ballpark idea of what it may cost me to upgrade if I bring it into an Apple store?  is it worth it?  It still runs well, it's just getting annoying that the newer apps (and iTunes) won't work with this version. Luckily also have a Windows vista desktop that I can plug my iPad and iPhone into.  Is my MacBook Pro capable of an upgrade? Frankly I only half understand some of the info above.
Thanks in advance for the help/suggestions.

Yes, you have a dam fine machine still.
In your case, I would have a local Mac/PC computer support type backup your files and install Snow Leopard 10.6   $29
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A
I do not advise 10.7 for your machine, it's just a tad outdated for it. As I've have so learned myself on a similar machine.
1: You can choose to add more RAM to 4GB, $20+ plus installation.
2: You can choose to add a 7,200 RPM hard drive, that will increase the machines performance bit more, $100+ plus installation.
However either isn't necessary for 10.6 Snow Leopard and Apple won't do it, or if they do it's going to be a huge charge.
So you would have to do it yourself or hire a Mac geek locally. I advise the local Mac geek if your not familiar with computers.
With 10.6 your going to see a remarkable speed improvement over 10.4 and for $29 is the cheapest performance upgrade you can do.
Unfortunatly your going to have to get new versions of software, but you don't have to buy Office.
    https://www.libreoffice.org/
So a ballpark figure, anywhere from $29 if you self-install Snow Leopard, to $180 or so plus whatever the computer guy charges.
If you find a Mac person who's good with computers you can likely get something he needs, like more memory or another hard drive.
FYI: I was quoted $600 by a Apple Authorized Reseller to replace my hard drive and $435 by Apple to upgrade the RAM from 4GB to 8GB
I got a drive myself for $300 (at the time) and more RAM for $80 and installed both myself.
So I'd say your likely looking at about $300-$350 with present drive and RAM prices including labor with a local Mac computer type.

  • 8830 WE on verizon questions before purchase

Im starting a job monday that is going to require international travel (thus the reason im getting the 8830, im with Verizon)
    Questions:
    1. If i dont unlock my phone what do I gain/lose? Why should I do this?
    2. If i pop a sim in from another carrier, say vodaphone, will I get a new number, aka a euro specific number?
    3. What will be the best way to call back to the states? Id really like to use my cell phone to be able to be able to call home. Would a sim card from euro let me call home? Is prepaid the best way to go so I avoid some huge charges?
    4. Will the 8830WE work all over, Ive only seen people who goto europe but i know that Ill be traveling to every continent (spare antartica) will the phone work in all of these places?
    5. Im trying my best to stay with verizon as its been very reliable to me or should i switch to a GSM carrier.
Any advice is greatly appreciated, this will be my first blackberry and am looking forward to it!
