Hum Remover

What is the best way to remove a humming sound in the background of audio? Are there a specific set of frequencies you guys recommend I limit? What about more than one filter?

I'd use the noise reducer in SoundTrack Pro. Get a clear section of it, set that as the noise print, then reduce noise.

How do use the hum remover in final cut pro 5? Help!!

Simply drop the effect onto the appropriate audio track. Set the frequency for the hum frequency (50Hz or 60Hz depending on your power supply). Include whichever harmonics you think might be present eg. 100, 150, 200Hz.
Note that I have generally had more success by using Soundtrack Pro's noise removal tool.

  • Hum Remover turns into reverb effect

I noticed that on all the clips I have turned the Hum Remover audio analysis feature on, days later, the sound of those clips has become like a reverb effect, like a medium room effect. It's very noticeable. Turning it off fixes the issue. I'm using Adobe Audition for noise removal now.
This feature, Hum Removal, worked fine when I first turned it on. But days later, after restarting FCP X, restarting system, etc., it now sounds like a reverb effect and very strange.
    Weird.

    You are welcome, Al.
    I don't know. 44100Hz worked well.
Below is part of the email i received from Audacity. As you can see, they say "may be expecting" which surprised me a little; one would think that they would know. Still, noise removal is a small part of Audacity. I was grateful that they wrote to me. Very kind.
For your interest, I am printing part of their response to me when I told them of my difficulties.
I suppose that when I have a moment, I could check using a 48100 rate.
If you have additional comments after reading the exceprt below, I would be interested.
    Best,

"Assuming "FCE" is Final Cut Express, it may be expecting a standard
44100 Hz, 16-bit AIFF file. Therefore make sure that is what you are
    exporting from Audacity.
"Set 44100 Hz for exports by setting the project rate bottom left of the
    Audacity window to 44100 Hz.
"The specific option to export AIFF signed 16-bit PCM will be in the File
Formats preferences in Audacity 1.2.6, or in Audacity Beta, choose it in
the "Save as type" list in the "Export File" window when you export."

  • Hum Remover in FCE 4.0 -- where is it?

In trying to remove hum from an audio track, Help sends me to Effects -- Audio Filter -- and then branches in to Apple and Final Cut Express. Each shows a bunch of choices, including hum remover, but they are a light gray color and nothing happens when I click on them. Is it possible my version does not have these choices? Or am I not accessing them properly? Any help greatly appreciate.

Aha! No, now it's NOT grayed out... Thanks... Now I'll have to figure out how to use it, but I'll work on that ... thanks!

  • Audio Tools - Hum Remover

Just wondering if anyone can suggest the best settings (Frequency, Q, etc.) for getting rid of annoying hum using the Hum Remover or other tool. Thanks.

There's a real good way to do this using Soundtrack Pro.
"AppleShakeGuru" has a really good and easy to follow tutorial on YouTube:

  • Audio hum removal

Anyone know how to get rid of a hum from a sound board recording of a wedding. The speaker sounds fine but there is a constant hum running through in the background. Tried hum remover but can't understand how that works.
    Thanks in advance.

You're going to need Sound Soap, hopefully its 'learn noise' function can reduce the hum to an acceptable level. Nothing will totally eliminate it. The hum you got from the sound board randomly crosses a broad range of frequencies.

  • What for is HUM REMOVAL?

I found some presets in waves and other plug-ins that are called Hum Removal and some 50Hz or 60hz, but logic plug-ins hasn't got them so maybe it has nothing to do with music freaquences? Thanks.

You can use Logic eq's with good result for hum removal too. Use a parametric and set the Q-factor as narrow as possible at the wanted frequency. Don't remember which of those plugs that has the smallest setting - you have to check out. But of course dedicated filters for this type of use (you mentioned Waves) just notch out (almost) the specified freq, leaving the rest of the spectrum unaltered. Personally I use iZotope RX which are excellent.

  • How to remove Aircndition hum?

Is there a filter to remove AC hum, without removig voice, or make it too flat??
    THX

When you select the clip, you can go to the inspector, click on audio, then click on audio enhancements and there's 3 variables.... Loudness, Background Noise and Hum Removal. I've tried Hum Removal, and fiddled with the frequency, but sometimes it does degrade the voices..... other times it's great.

  • How do i remove buzz and hiss from audio track?

    I'm using Premiere Elements 13, Windows 8, 64 bit
My original film has some hiss and buzz that I would like to remove. I tried applying DeNoiser and New Blue Hum Remover, but neither seemed to make a difference. Perhaps I need to tweek the tools to make them suppress more of the unwanted sound? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

Just some quick things to check out for now.
If the Premiere Elements audio effects are not working for you, please check out the noise removal offered by the free audio editor named Audacity. Have you used that before?
    http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Here are Audacity suggested how to. Think noise reduction rather than noise removal.

  • Background Noise Removal Levels Changed to 50%

I've repeatedly encountered an unpleasant problem with the Background Noise Removal feature in Final Cut Pro X, both in 10.0.0 and 10.0.1.  If I turn Background Noise Removal on for a clip in the Timeline, and adjust the level to something other than the default of 50% (which creates squarium-like sound - I can't think when such a high setting would be appropriate), I eventually find that FCPX has thrown away all my levels and changed the level to 50% on all clips for which I have enabled Noise Removal.  I haven't yet figured out what action makes FCPX throw away my levels (simply quitting and starting again doesn't do it); but this has happened to me repeatedly over the course of the last three months.  Has anyone else seen this? - Dan Sallitt

I've not been able to get satisfactory improvements to audio using the Audio Enhancements. The Hum removal always sounds like reverb is added. The Noise Reduction leaves so much to be desired.  And, I'm not sure I understand how to use the "Loudness" effectively (it's never been an effect I've used extensively in Logic or STP — there are much better ways to "master" audio and I *prefer* Multipressor [also in FCPX]).
I use Effects > Audio > Levels > Logic > Adaptive Limiter to lower the noise floor and increase the gain for a quasi – noise reduction (there is also a "Noise Gate" effect for this -- a little trickier)  and I can notch out frequency band noises with Channel or Linear Phase EQ. But quite frankly, the very best noise reduction I've ever heard in nearly 20 years of searching is in ScreenFlow. You don't have to use it as a screen capture software, it can be used to "add in" audio/video (New Empty Document) and (phenomenal) noise reduction can be had by *just* turning on Filter: "Remove Background Noise". Any "digital artifacts" are virtually imperceptible (and that's at their default setting of 80%!!). After bringing that audio into FCPX, any "enhancements" is just flat out *for fun*.  Apple really needs to license or buy Telestream's noise reduction software. [Export options out of ScreenFlow include ProRes and AIFF/LinearPCM... among others.]
One more thing about the Audio Effects in FCPX: YOU CAN SAVE YOUR SETTINGS AS PRESETS!!!! You can't even do that with video effects!!!!! Almost every audio effect has a Presets: menu and at the very bottom is Save Preset.
For most categories, there are: the Final Cut effects; Logic effects; and Mac OS X effects (these are basically the same as you would find in Garageband) --- stay with the Logic effects!

  • Getting rid of audio hums

Well - I have a Cannon GL2, and an external mic that I used to shoot. After I captured my footage, I noticed during some of my takes there's a low sounding hum underneath the entire take. Is there a trick to get rid of that? If not...uh oh!

I had the same problem with a huge amount of hum in a recording I made. I spent most of a day working with the built-in audio filters, including the hum filter. Nothing removed it. I read other posts where they recommended SoundSoap2 from Bias. I went to their site and watched this video http://www.bias-inc.com/downloads/videos/soundsoap2/movie.php a couple of times then ordered it through Amazon.com (which saved me about $40).
I got SoundSoap2 in the mail today and in about 10 minutes I had it installed and the hum removed from the video. It's easy to use (just watch the video and you are trained) and worked like a charm for me. I highly recommend this product.

    If you have Soundtrack....
In FCP select your audio track while holding down the control key-send to-soundtrack audio file project. A save window will open asking where to save the file, pick a folder or create one for these files and hit -save-, Soundtrack will open- find a part of your audio without talking,(room tone if you have it) click and drag in the grid and select just that noise, go up to Process-set noise print.
Then go to Process-reduce noise, a new menu will open with sliders. push the play button so you can hear your noise and move the top slider until the noise is almost gone. (if you go to far the vocals will start to sound very digital) play with the other sliders to get the right sound, hit -Apply. Make sure you save. Good luck

  • Removing audio whistle in background

Hi, I want to remove a whitle/hum in the background of an interview and need some help. I've tried using the "Hum Remover" Filter in FCP and also the "Noise Print" Reduction in Soundtrack Pro (although its the first time I've used the software so I may not be great at it).
Could anyone recommend how to get rid of the unwanted sound?
You can download a 1mb example aiff here :
    https://rcpt.yousendit.com/736369137/16eb13161bacb3ccafe741fb544e3d67
(The first three seconds are unfiltered, then you can hear my rubbish attempt with the "Noise Print" Filter ... the interviewee is talking about software btw).
    Any help much appreciated!
    Oliver

Maybe we're talking about two different things. The example you posted does not have a hum.
A hum is a low-frequency sound, like you get from bad grounding. Double-check the example
you posted to make sure the "hum" is in that file, and when you stop playing the file,
    the hum stops.
I think it's time for a quick filter tutorial: Insert FCP's Parametric Equalizer. Now turn up the Q
and the Gain really high so that you can hear the effect. Now move the Frequency back and forth
so that you can hear the filter sweep. Now keep sweeping back and forth until you find where
the filter makes the whistle worse. Try to find the exact frequency. +Now change the Gain from+
+postive to negative.+ That should pull out the problem frequency.

  • Removing fan noise in footage using FCP

I have audio that has a low-freq fan hum. I have a long time ago read about a built-in (?) filter in FCP that analyzes the hum, and using phase-turn eliminates (or at makes it less noticeable).
But I can't find that filter? I tried the Hum remover, but to me that filter is more for removing that 50 (or 60) Hz humming you might get when using poor audio cables.
    Any tips is greatly appreciated!

You will find that if you remove the fan noise completely, you'll also damage the voice. A blower generates a full spectrum sound. THe absolute best way to fix this is at the time of the recording

  • Differences between Premiere Elements 11 and Pro CS6?

    Hello,
I would like to know the differences between Adobe Premiere Elements 11 and Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 in relation to video editing. If someone can point me to any resource on the web like a comparision chart of features, differences etc that would be perfect. I understand the Premiere Pro CS6 would have a lot of extra bell and whistles, special effects etc... but what I would like to know if there is a difference in terms of the the quality of the Final Product?
Our needs for a video editor are very simple. We need to create simple titles and text overlay to show the name of the speaker and/or topic. A few times we the audio was not recorded on the video camcera but we do have the audio recorded for the event on a separate audio recorder in .WAV format. So we would like to sync up the video with this audio. Can this be done in Adobe Premiere Elements 11?
And in cases where the audio was recorded with video, we would like to increase the gain/volume for the audio or clean up some hum or background noise. Can this be done in Adobe Premiere Elements 11?
That is it, we do not need any special effects or animations etc... Please let me know if Adobe Premiere Elements 11 can help us meet our needs. If there is any other software that would be more suitable please advise.
    Thank you!
    VS

I cannot speak for CS6.  Here are thoughts from a new APE11 user's view:

APE11 provides simplicity and good functionality for this stated need.
we would like to sync up the video with this audio. Can this be done in Adobe Premiere Elements 11?
If your video and audio contain a clap, you can manually sync by sliding the audio peak along the video.  The audio wave form will be blanked out when sliding, with a frame counter showing how many whole frames you have moved the audio at each moment, so it is a "drag, stop, compare, drag another frame or two, stop, compare" process that works.  (Finer adjustment than whole frames is not possible.)  Once the sync is achieved, select both audio and video track and link them. (The stability of the sync over time will depend on the accuracy of the recorder, and can pose a problem in long recordings. )
increase the gain/volume for the audio or clean up some hum or background noise. Can this be done in Adobe Premiere Elements 11?
APE11 allows adjusting the volume levels and also provides level normalization if desired, but more involved audio cleanup such as hiss and hum removal, compression, or auto gain are not available.
Please let me know if Adobe Premiere Elements 11 can help us meet our needs. If there is any other software that would be more suitable please advise.
You should download the APE11 trial to judge for yourself how well it will meet all your needs.
