Nope, doesn't pass verification. I get the spinner for a minute or so, then the alert about setting it up without SSL. Are you suggesting I disable Fetch and Push BEFORE I enter the account details? Because I never get past the account details screen, unless I choose "Set up without SSL" after the warning.

I did what you've told me, new account and manually copied my files from Time Machine. I had lots of permissions problems, but at the end, almost everything is in order... It seems it had to be with some of the Apple Preferences, but I can't be sure, as most of them were dumped to the trash can.
I still don't have my Mail Rules back, unfortunately, although I did goggled some. It is a pity, as I had around 30 or 40 of them, getting my mail in order to each of its mailboxes, but it is a small price as the rest doesn't show the before syntoms.

Can't set up Gmail on new iPad 2?

Hi, I just bought my wife a gently used iPad 2 for Christmas. I'm out of town on a business trip, so I thought I'd spend the week getting it all set up for her so it's ready to rock 'n roll when she unwraps it.
I can't get her Gmail account to work. I go to Settings>Mail, Contacts, and Calendars>Add Account>Gmail and enter all the information, and eventually I get an alert about not being able to set up the account using SSL, do I want to set it up without SSL? If I click "Yes," then I get a warning that I may not be able to send and receive mail from the account (and, in fact, I can neither send nor receive messages). If I click "No," then it just sends me back to the account details entry panel.
I know the account info is correct because I logged in with the same credentials on my laptop. The hotel wi-fi connection is wonky, so I went over to Staples and tried it there. I think it works, because I was able to use iCloud to sync her photos (the ones on her iPhone immediately showed up on the iPad), and the App store worked, and a couple of other things. However, the Gmail account just would not function, even after removing it and re-entering the information a few times.
Also had the same thing happen with the DirecTV for iPad app; it took my account login stuff and then gave me an endless "Retrieving account details..." spinner. I let it think for 10 minutes before just giving up and coming back to the hotel.

In principle, I agree re: the manufacturer's warranty. However, I am pretty upset that this is now my second iPod to develop a critical fault within weeks of the warranty expiring, and frankly, it is not unreasonable to expect a state-of-the-art $500 electronic device to last well beyond one year of life.
I agree talking to Apple is not likely to do me any good (the clue is in how impossible they make it to talk to them in the first place) - but that is not necessarily OK. I expect I will have to pay money to get the battery replaced - again, not OK (full stop - but especially given the cost of the device and the money I have spent with Apple). Yes, the batteries have a limited lifespan, but it should last longer than this (and surely, I should notice a gradual decline in its functionality, not an instant stop).
I will try Deggie's suggestion (see my reply post), but probably won't hold my breath (think I have already done this). I probably will have to get the new battery - and probably under my own steam. It is a principle at stake and I feel I should be able to let Apple know how I'm feeling - and am frustrated that they make this virtually impossible. It sends the very clear message that they are not interested in listening to their customers.

You could try going into settings then messages and seeing if you have it turned on. You will need to use your apple ID then, hope that helps.

I got my new iPhone 5 Last Friday. However I can not activate facetime on the new iPhone 5. All other function work well.
I used my apple ID and always get the below message " Could not sign in. Please check your network connection and try again".
My network work well. I can access internet, apple store with no issue via wi-fi or AT&T 4G. No password issue as I can use the same apple ID register other access and apple store.
I noticed that many users are complaining the facetime after upgrading to iOS6. Not sure if this is the reason?

Facetime is accessed through Contacts or Messages. The only place you will find anything else in is Settings, where you would activate it. There is no stand alone app for Facetime like on the iPod or iPad.

Next time an app update gets stuck try a reset. Press and hold both the home and power buttons for10-15 seconds till the Apple logo appears. Then release both buttons. Wait till your iPad starts on it's own. Try now. Also YouTube is still available. If you can't find it the the app store go to the bottom of the app store page and tap purchased. All your deleted apps will be listed and you can reinstall YouTube from there.
