Try this:
Open your iBooks app on your iPad
Select the Store Button at the top
Select Purchased at the bottom
You will see your AppleID on the right at the bottom, then Redeem, then Support
Click on your Apple ID, and when the AppleID window comes up with the options, Sign Out
Then Sign In again and try redownloading your book

So, I loaded the hard copy, and the instructions said that it would just overwrite the downloaded version. And again it will not recognise my serial number! start mail then:

You have apparently purchased a jailbroken phone. You can try to get it into recovery mode, then restore as new, but no guarantee it will work.

I was getting the update to the new software update and it started installing then the iphone 5s went black and has not come on since..

If you hold down shift while pressing the "restore Iphone" button on Itunes it gives you the option to restore from anywhere you want to. If you are really on iOS 5 then look in Settings > General > Software update.
Otherwise:
If you are using iOS 4 (or earlier) there is no Software Update in Settings. That feature was first added in iOS 5.
To update you will have to connect your iPad to iTunes on a computer (preferably the one you sync with and backup to).
