i don't know how to setup FF to open in last session of windows wont let me save current sessions like it used to ask me fairly disappointing can you help m? Phil

''want FF to open in last session of windows -- won't ask me if I want to save current sessions like it before''
'''You can still have the old messages''', to make sure you get your tabs restored immediately, but with or without the messages and whichever way you respond to the message you can still get back your previous session through the History menu. (see item #31 "tabslost")

  • Received .PDF files which when opened are in "Western European Windows" and are just gibberish. I have adobe 10.0.01 installed now. Can you help please in how to correct this Thanks

I received three files in Microsoft Outlook in a PDF format. When I clicked on open I got a window showing "Opening Mail Attchment" and only open from "trusted" sources. After opening it displayed a window for File conversion with Windows as the default with Western European( Windows) as I assume the font. The file was shown but had essentially meaningless characters and numbers with maybe the occasional meaningful word. There seems no way to understand why this happened or to correct it. Can you help please

    Thanks

Pop up usually meant that icloud activation lock is still on on Apple servers. In order to deactivate you need to turn icloud back on by signing in and then sign out properly. For your sake I hope that you know the password.

  • Don't know how to setup a simple VLAN on the RVS4000

I'm sure it is my lack of knowledge of networks, but even after reading the manual (!) I don't understand how I can set-up a simple VLAN on my new RVS4000.
On my good old DrayTek it's very easy: it shows me a matrix of check boxes and all I have to do is click the ones that correspond to ports that can 'see' eachother. Something like this:
                   Port 1   Port 2   Port 3   Port 4
    VLAN 1    x                          x
    VLAN 2                      x        x
    VLAN 3             x                 x
    VLAN 4
So port 1-3 can all 'see' port 4 (the Internet router) but they can't 'see' eachother.
Can anyone please show me the steps to take to accomplish this? Thanks a lot in advance!
    Paul

OK, I will use it as a bookstand...
Since I obviously don't know enough about networks I will stay away from 'professional' products like the Cisco products.
The user interface and the documentation of these products are clearly made by nerds for nerds...

  • Don't know how to setup wireless D-Link router

    I just bought a D-Link Wireless Router WBR-1310.
It is running, connect throught Ethernet to a high speed modem,
two computers are connected to the router with Ethernet cables (iMac on Mac OS 10.5.6 - G4 on Mac OS 10.4.11).
I don't use it in wireless mode because I don't understand how to do it (the manual mentions nothing about mac computers I don't understand why).
I want to disconnect my Ethernet cables (except the one between the modem and the router)
and use just the wireless mode for the 2 macs. What do I do?
I turned on AirPort on the iMac, disconnected the Ethernet cable but nothing works
(I loose the connection to Internet). When I select Airport it gives me a list of satellite names
and what not. I don't get it.
Should be easy, what should I do exactly.
I'm afraid to play around with the settings since everything works fine now with cables.
    Thanks

I don't want to detail all the steps re wireless set up but. 1.The scheme for a Mac is different only in the interface presentation and some minor features. You can certainly get it going on a Mac.
    2. Get hold of a manual for a router that does describe a Mac set up, by download or otherwise and read it to get the general scheme.
    3. Since it is running via the ethernet cable I assume you have the basic ADSL transmission parameters set so it is just a matter of the wireless signals to and from the device and encryption, and then setting the encryption passphrase up in each client card in the computers.
    4. Note the default IP address of the router, and the default administration user name, and default admin password. These should be on the soleplate or in the literature.
    5. Use a browser to browse to said IP address. just http:// then the number set , not www.
    6. Enter admin username and password into pop up box. Do not worry about any 'certificate' warnings. It is a bit of hardware in your house you are going to not a dodgy site.
    7. A website like page will come up. Go through the tabs to get to the one on Wireless and Security. Don't worry about opening pages. It usually needs a specific action to save any change.
    8. You will need to set up probably the country of use,an SSID (station name) maybe stuff about the channel to use. The router will most likely pick suitable defaults for Canada etc if you bought it at home.
There is little good from not setting a station name or hiding it. Getting that is childs play for a Hacker. Not much use either restricting access to specific hardware (specified by the MAC codes of the device cards)
    9. Choose to set up an 'Infrastructure 'network. That is one with security. Choose to set up WPA2 personal encryption. WEP is to easy to break. 'Enterprise' security needs a dedicated password server.
    10. Now the passwording. The device both uses this as a password proper and then as an encryption key for the traffic. Some routers have a so called easy push button way of setting a password, WPS. My simple mind prefers the direct route After establishing the form of th security pick a passphrase to enter in the WPA2 passphrase box. I use a piece of poetry, stripped of all punctuation and spaces. Can contain non alphanumeric characters. Bfore entering it, write it down. Draw several parallel lines on paper then cut them with verticals number the boxes from 1 to 63. Then enter the passphrase to total 62 characters. More it wont work. Less is less secure. You can pad the end or start if your poetry does not quite fit.
    11. At the completion of the page click to save it.
    12. Now set the passphrase into the wireless sets on the computers. How will depend upon the OS used by the computer. Read the help.

Firefox cannot get to the web because the MS update conflicts with my default browser FF. I tried a system restore point before the explorer 9 update, but it didn't clear the MS update troubleshooter with the FF logo and I can not get to my browser directly.

    Hey kaliapple,
Thanks for the question. First, you can try deleting and redownloading the purchase by following along with this:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store

I am running a mac mini lio server 10.7.3 Time capsule.

Most people are going to see that message as a result of not properly closing Firefox, and then attempting to reopen Firefox. This problem is most likely to occur on Windows Operating systems, less frequently on Linux and Mac systems but not unheard of on any system.
Because you are on a Mac, I am referring you directly to an article that has been reworded for each operating system.
To properly close Firefox on your Mac use "Firefox" button -> Quit Firefox, and not with the "X" in corner of window which simply closes the window and not necessarily Firefox.
When you get stuck as you have described you must Force Firefox to terminate as described at the end of the article:
    Mac OS X
:Open Apple Menu and select "Force Quit". For Mac OS X 10.3 and later, you can also use the Activity Monitor found in your "Utilities" folder (Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor).

  • HT1178 My Time Capsule is only blinking amber. My computer tried to backup but I don't know how to tell if it did in fact back up the data. How can I tell if it backed up and why doesn't the light show green?

Just purchased a Time Capsule. Had to call Comcast to disable the WIFI and have internet connection. The time capsule though blinks amber and the Airport Utility shows blinking amber light and has a red circle with the number 1 in it. After connecting, my computer tried doing a backup for the first time and it appeared that it was backing up and finished although I don't know how to check to make sure that it did backup. How do I check and shouldn't the light on the time capsule be blinking green and the airport utility show green?

TM will show it has done a backup.. Look at the info.. when was the backup completed??
If you want more details install the widget.
    A1 here.

The time capsule though blinks amber and the Airport Utility shows blinking amber light and has a red circle with the number 1 in it.
There is an error.. probably trivial.. firmware update, default password..
Open the airport utility and find out what the error is.
Simply click the TC and see status in the summary page.. it will list all the errors and what you should do.. fix or ignore them. ie this TC has an error.. default password.. I chose to ignore.. when I "fix" the problem the LED goes green.
Here is additional TC.. it is blinking amber with faults.
Click the fault. eg default password.
You can ignore or edit .. if you click edit it will take you to the full setup where you can change the settings.
I ignored my errors and now it is green..

  • My MacBook Pro won't go beyond a white screen, after I pushed the restart button. How can I get it to a login? I have routinely backed it up, but don't know how to bring that up, nor if I have a boot file on that external disk. Help!

My MacBook Pro won't go beyond a white screen, after I pushed the restart button. How can I get it to a login? I have routinely backed it up, but don't know how to bring that up, nor if I have a boot file on that external disk. Help!

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
To restart an unresponsive computer, press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If a desktop Mac hangs at a plain gray screen with a movable cursor, the keyboard may not be recognized. Press and hold the button on the side of an Apple wireless keyboard to make it discoverable. If need be, replace or recharge the batteries. If you're using a USB keyboard connected to a hub, connect it to a built-in port.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
