I have a netgear n300 router broadcasting my wpa secured wireless network and bought an airport express to extend the network. I did an Ethernet setup from a MacBook, got the green checkmark but no extension. help.

Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your Netgear router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).
The few non-AirPort routers that are known to work are:
Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not v5)
Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
BT Voyager 2091
Netgear WGR614 v6
Buffalo WGR-G54

I am trying to extend my network from my 500GB Time Capsule using the new Airport Express I just bought, but no matter what I try I keep getting "Unexpected Error. Try again". The Express is still flashing Amber. I cannot get it to turn green. What am I doing wrong here? Please help me.
Locate the AirPort Express in the same room as the Time Capsule for the setup.
Power off and restart the Time Capsule
Shut down and restart the Mac. Turn on the wireless on the Mac and temporarily disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Mac to the AirPort Express. In other words, you want to set up the AirPort Express using wireless, since that is the way that it will be used.
Hold in the reset button on the AirPort Express for 9-10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Express to restart.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear. Just below that, click directly on AirPort Express.
AirPort Setup will open up and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the Express will be configured to extend the Time Capsule network.
Enter a device name that you want to use and click Next
Wait a minute while AirPort Setup configures everything, and hopefully announces a message of Setup Complete. Click Done.
Now move the AirPort Express to a location that is about half way between the Time Capsule and the area that needs more wireless coverage. Avoid obstructions in the signal path between the Time Capsule and AirPort Express as much as possible.
Walls, ceilings, mirrors, heavy furniture, etc. just kill the wireless signal quality. Keep any cordless phones as far away from either router as possible.
It would be much better if you could plan to connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Express using an Ethernet cable, as best case.....you will be losing about half of the network speed trying to use wireless to extend. -
Can I use an Airport Express to extend a network using a Bwrg500 router?
Can I use my Airport Express to extend my wireless network while using a Bountiful BWRG500 wireless router? The Bountiful wireless router has the WDS abilities.

Thank you for looking.It is in fact possible to extend your network using WDS. I say this under the assumption that your statement regarding the WDS capabilities of the Bwrg router is correct. However, keep in mind that you cannot use a WPA or WPA2 password with a WDS extended network. You must either use no encryption or use WEP. Unfortunately some routers require WEP passwords that use either 10 or 26 digits ONLY while the express uses a 13 digit password.
This can be a troubling problem considering that most people need a wifi password to ensure safe and secure browsing. -
I have an Airport Extreme Base Station now and I would like to know if I can use an Airport Express to extend my wifi network or do I have to use another Airport Extreme Base Station.

Apple does not specify a model number in their product information, but it is A1392 in the U.S. I do not know if Apple uses different model numbers in other countries. -

AirPort base stations have essentially three network choices: join, create, or extend.
If you want to connect to a specific network, something must "create" that network. An Express can do that, but it must derive its connection via Ethernet since it cannot simultaneously become a client of one wireless network while creating another.

Help! Trying to use Airport Express to extend existing network
Computer Illiterate here. I have an Airport Extreme base station and am connected to the internet. I have been trying to extend my network using an Airport Extreme.
I previously had the network set up like this, but after my DSL line was cut, and going through several decades of customer service **** with Verizon to get everything back again, I can't get it all to work together (friend did it for me the first time and is now unavailable).
The problem is that when I open Airport Setup Assistant, it doesn't recognize either the Airport Express or even the Airport Extreme (which is working and I can connect to the internet). In fact there is nothing in the list at all. Reluctant to reset the Airport Extreme because I will then lose my settings I presume. Will I have to create a new network and password and all the rest of it? Barely managed to do that the first time. Anyone have any ideas about what I'm doing wrong? I have a few dead spots around the house and I am seeking a good solution without pulling ethernet cable. Reading this community it would seem best if going with Airport Express solution to replace my Netgear and pick up a couple of AXn's. Or perhaps Airport Extreme for base at cable model and AXn for extension?
I had assumed I could just configure one AXn and put it in the dead zone, but reading configuring roaming network indicates you need two. I was planning on adding Apple TV in extended zone does this change anything?There are a number of possibilities of using multiple AirPorts to extend the wireless range of your network without using wires. Since your goal is to use wireless connections between routers, you will need two or more AirPort to accomplish this. Unfortunately, extending the Netgear by wireless will not work due to WDS compatibility issues between router manufacturers. -
I did set up my Airport Express to extend my existing network. It did ok but I can't see the name assigned to the Airport Express name in my available networks. Is that normal?
If the AirPort Express is extending your network it is using the same wireless network name as your "main" router.
Your main router and the Express act like one "big" network now.
Your computer will connect to either the main router or the Express automatically....depending on where it sees the best signal. -
I hooked up new iMac to wireless network and now iPad and iPhone do not work using wireless. They did before hooking up the iMac. I am using a Netgear N300 router. Also my Netgear ethernet/homeplug for wireless TV internet no longer works. Any ideas? I have tried unplugging, restarting, and resetting. No luck! Thanks!

I'm looking for some help connecting linksys IP Cameras to my home network to monitor my property when I'm travelling. I used to do this with linksys WAPS, but since I've discarded all my old linksys networking and standardized on airport, I can't get these things working. I know that I have to identify my camera through the DHCP table and set up port forwarding and there is the problem.
My network consists of 4 base stations set up in a roaming network - same network name and passwords. I need to do it this way so I don't have to switch network when I move from one side of the house to the other, go to the cabana, or my shop in the barn. The network works pretty well since I went to a roaming set up. Good performance, yata, yata, yata.
However, the roaming network requires the AEBS's to be set up in bridge mode, rather than sharing an ip address. When the AEBS is set to bridge mode, you don't see a DCHP table or have the ability to identify your IP Cam through the AEBS - and hence, no port forwarding.
I am able to identify and set up my Linksys IP Cam by locating the ip address on my FIOS router, even though, it's plugged into an AEBS. I set it up, see the video, remove the ethernet cable from the IP Cam, restart - and I can't get to it from an AEBS. In researching this, it appears, I should be setting up the AEBS to "share an IP Address", going to the DHCP table and identifying the camera's IP address and setting up port forwarding. However, you don't see any of the DHCP or port forwarding options in Airport Network Utility when configuring in bridge mode.
I'm hoping I'm missing something here and that the solution isn't to set it up at the FIOS router level, but I'm beginning to think that's my only hope. What concerns me there is that I should be able to see the IP cam on the network without port forwarding since I'm not coming from outside, and I can't even do this unless it's connected hard wire.
I'd appreciate any insight into this that anyone might have. I've hit the wall with what I know.
Thanks.In a roaming network, your "main" router is the device that would require port mapping/forwarding to be configured in order to access the IP camera from the Internet. This router is also the one that would be provide the private IP address for the camera which you will want to be a static one.
So as you described your network, the IP cameras should be getting an IP address or you assigned it a static one and this is the address that you would enter in the Private IP address (or equivalent depending on the router used) field when setting up port mapping.
If you are not able to access this camera from the local network, then this should be troubleshot first. -
Is there a way to turn the wireless capabilities off on an AirPort Express? I have an AirPort Extreme as my main router and use the express to just extend it. I only really want to you use the express for hard ethernet connections. For whatever reason when I have my express extend my wifi at home the download speed from just the express is absolutely terrible, drops to about 1.5 mb compared to when it's on the extremes part of the network the speed goes up to 50-75mb. These terrible download speed really only affects the iPhones as my MacBook Pro usually gets the good speed no matter where it is. I don't believe there is anything wrong with my phone because if I am in the part of the house that uses just the extreme the download speeds on the iphone goes up to 50-75mb. As a note I have an AirPort Extreme on the top floor of my house (second floor) that's where my modem is located. On the first floor that's where one airport express is located. I also have another airport express in the basement that is accessed by my landlord. Any thoughts on how to fix this would be helpful.

It appears that your networking goals with the AirPort Express is to use it as a wireless Ethernet bridge instead of using it to extend the wireless range of your AirPort Extreme. The latter requires that the Express Wi-Fi radios be enabled.
If you intended to use the Express as a wireless bridge, you just need to reconfigure it to "Join a wireless" network instead of "Extend a wireless network."

In an extended network, the placement of the extending base station is critical as it can only extend the wireless network at the bandwidth at which it receives it.

Is the status light green?
Your Airport device may be in Bridge Mode.
Airport Utility 6:
Open Airport Utility, select the Airport Express and click Edit. Navigate to the Network tab and change Router Mode to DHCP and NAT. Then click Update on the bottom right.
Airport Utility 5:
Open Airport Utility and click Manual Setup. Navigate to the Internet icon and change Connection Sharing to Share a Public IP Address. Then click Update on the bottom right. -
I have a dlink hooked to the cox cable and then an airport express to the dlink. I am able to password the airport but not the dlink. I;ve tried the preferences mode and it won't take. HELP

I just bought an AirPort express. Currently I have a qwest wired router plugged into the back of my computer via an ethernet cable. Can I just unplug the ethernet cable and plug it into the AirPort express, then use the setup utility? Most of the discussions involve an existing wireless network. I don't have one.
